Shaikh Abdus Salaam Burgess (rahimahullaah) said:

Some of the students consider themselves capable of acquiring knowledge from the books without returning to the people of knowledge to shed light on its idioms and explain its intricacies. This self-confidence is a continuous disease and we have seen its victims forsaken.

Imaam Shaafi-ee (rahimahullaah) said:

Whoever seeks understanding from what is inside the books, he will forfeit the Rulings.”

And it used to be said from a long time ago:

The one whose books are his Shaikh, then his mistakes will be more than what he gets right.’’

Shaikh Ahmad Baazmool (hafidha-hullaah) said:

Knowledge will be lost if it not acquired from the Scholars, as reported by Bayhaqee in As-Sunan Al-Kubraa from Abdullaah Bin Ubaid who said: ‘Indeed, if the teachers reach the Scholars, then the scholars will pass away and knowledge will remain with the teachers; and knowledge will depart if the teachers do not reach it (i.e. from the Scholars).’
