Kissing the Hand of the Elderly Person | Shaikh Abdur-Razzaaq Al-Badr

Kissing the Hand of the Elderly Person

Question to Shaikh Abdur-Razzaaq Al-Badr:

“In some countries they kiss the hand of the elderly (people) and the father; is there a prohibition in that?”

Answer:

“Kissing the hand of an elderly father: This has been transmitted in some reports (of the pious predecessors), however that which has been transmitted in the ahaadeeth of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) is the kissing of the head (i.e. the forehead) of a father or the elderly (people). This is carried out by a Muslim and he will be rewarded for it Inshaa-Allaah; and this is not an affair that is done always and repeated in every meeting, but it is from the etiquettes (carried out towards) the elders, that one kisses his head (i.e the forehead of the elderly person) as an honour and respect for him. The kissing of the hand has been narrated in some of the narrations of the pious predecessors with this meaning.

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan’s Recommendation for Shaikh Rabee’ Al-Madkhalee

Questioner: “Virtuous Shaikh, there is to be found in the bookstores the book ”Al-Intisaar Li-Kitaabil Azeezil Jabbaar Was-Sahaabatu Al-Akhyaar” and the book ”Kash Zaif At-Tasawwuf” of Dr Rabee Al-Madkhalee; do you advise us with it? (i.e. to read and benefit from it)”

Answer by Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan:

“Wallaahi, I have not read it myself. The man is good, well-known and he is a scholar. As for the book, I have not read it myself so as to make judgement on it. Na’am.”

This fatwah is especially for those who reproach Shaikh Rabee’ Al-Madkhali without Knowledge. Indeed, the speech of Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan is clear and manifest; he said about Shaikh Rabee’: ”The man is good, well-known and he is a Scholar.”

Allaah (The Most High) said:

”O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.” Surah An-Nisaa 4:59

Allaah (The Most High) said:

”And We sent not (as Our Messengers) before you (O Muhammad) any but men, whom We inspired, (to preach and invite mankind to believe in the Oneness of Allah). So ask of those who know the Scripture [learned men], if you know not.” Surah an-Nahl 16:43

The Greeting: Sabaahul Khayr-Sabaahun Noor; Masaa ul-Khayr-Masaa-in-Noor

In The Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful the Bestower of Mercy

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said:

If he [i.e. the man] is persistent upon sin, he is not to be married to, because some the pious predecessors said: ‘’He who marries his precious one [i.e. daughter] to an evil doer, then indeed he has severed her womb’’

Do Not Lend Them An Ear!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawree [rahimahullaah] said: Whoever lends an ear to a person of innovation, has left the protection of Allaah and is entrusted to it (i.e. to the innovation).

Sheikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: Whoever lends an ear to a person of innovation, has left the protection of Allaah:’   The hadith about fleeing from ahlul bidah and not to sit with them, nor to accompany them has proceeded; so, whoever accompanies them and listens to their statements and does not reject them, will be destroyed alongside them. It is not permissible for you to lend an ear to them whilst saying: ‘’I am a believer with strong Eemaan and I am well acquainted with the Aqeedah, and they [i.e. the innovators] cannot have an effect on me.’  This is self -deception [and] trial for the people; for being distant from (the innovators) and not listening to their false statements is Safety.  As for lending your ear to them, then you will become worthy of being put to trail alongside them.

And concerning the statement of Sufyaan: ‘And is entrusted to it (i.e. to the innovation)’:  Sheikh Saaleh Al Fawzaan commented: Because Allaah safeguards the one who seeks safety with Him but the one who listens to innovation is worthy of being put to trial by it. He is entrusted to it and is removed from the Protection of Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He].
