[20] Advice for seekers of knowledge–a statement of Al’Qaasim Bin Muhammad

Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said that it reached him from Al-Qaasim Bin Muhammad (rahimahullaah) who said: “I met a people (i.e. Salaf) who were not amazed by speech, rather they were amazed by actions.”

[Quoted by Shaikh Raslaan in Fadlul Ilm. page: 597]

Beware of evil companions in this worldly life before it is too late!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Then they (i.e. the people of paradise) will turn to one another, mutually questioning. A speaker of them will say: “Verily, I had a companion (in the world), Who used to say: “Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death). (That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)? (The man) said: “Will you look down? So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. He said: “By Allah! You have nearly ruined me. Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell).” [37:50-57]

[18] Advice for seekers of knowledge–Beware of what has afflicted the Self-Proclaimed and Psedo Shaikhs of the West!

Ahmad Bin Abu Sulaymaan (rahimahullaah) said: I heard Sahnoon Bin Sa’eed (rahimahullaah) saying:

”The most daring of  the people to issue fatwaa are the ones with the least knowledge amongst them.  A man may possess a chapter of knowledge and thus thinks that all truth is contained within it.”

[17] Advice for seekers of knowledge- an example in Imaam Ahmad!

It was said to Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah): What is better; to speak or remain silent? So he said: ”Remaining silent is more beloved to me, except when (I have to speak) out of necessity.”

Quoted by Shaikh Raslaan in Fadlul Ilm. page: 543

Our Salaf: Bishr Ibn Al-Haarith described Imaam Ahmad after the Mehnah

Bishr Ibn Al-Haarith (rahimahullaah) was asked about Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) after the Mehnah, so he said: ”Ibn Hanbal was entered into the bellows (i.e. put to trial just as precious stones are exposed to fire in order to be cleaned) and he exited as red gold (i.e. firm upon his religion, upright, steadfast etc)”.

Our Salaf: Imaam Ahmad spoke about Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee’s station in knowledge

When Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) was asked about Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah), he said: ”Indeed, Allaah (The Blessed and Exalted) conferred blessings by way of him (i.e. Ash-Shaaf’ee). Indeed, we used study the statements of the people (i.e. the scholars) and wrote (from) their books until Ash-Shaafi’ee came to us. So when we heard his statements, we knew that he was more knowledgeable than others. Indeed, we sat with him day and night, and we did not see from him except complete goodness. May Allaah have mercy on him.”

Our Salaf: Ibraaheem Ibn Adham–whenever we heard a young man speaking in a gathering

Ibraaheem Ibn Adham (rahimahullaah) said:

”Whenever we used to hear a young man speaking in a gathering, we lost hope about him being upon good.”

Our Salaf: Ibraaheem Ibn Adham–How are you?

Whenever Ibraaheem Ibn Adham (rahimahullaah) was asked: “How are you?” He replied: ”I’m upon goodness as long as I am not carrying the burdens of others.”

Who are your companions and for what reason have you chosen them as companions?!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

ٱلۡأَخِلَّآءُ يَوۡمَٮِٕذِۭ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ

”Friends on that Day (i.e. Day of Judgement) will be foes one to another except Al-Muttaqun (pious)” [43:67]

[16] Advice for seekers of knowledge—Never feel shy to say I do not know!

Ash-Shabiy (rahimahullaah) was asked (about an affair of the deen), so he said: “I don’t know.” Then it was said to him, “Do you not feel shy of your statement” I don’t know” and you’re the faqeeh of the people of Basra?” So he said: “But the angels did not feel shy when they said [i.e. Allaah said that the angels said: قَالُواْ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ لَا عِلۡمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمۡتَنَآ‌ۖ-They (angels) said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. (2:32)]
