[8] Advice for the seekers of knowledge--when you seek permission to enter...


It is disliked for the student of knowledge that when he seeks permission to (enter the dwelling place of his Shaikh) and thus it is said, ”Who is that? So he says, ”I’ without mentioning his name. (1)

Narrated Jabir Bin Abdillaah (radiyallaahu-anhuma): I came to the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) in order to consult him regarding my father’s debt. When I knocked at the door, he asked, ”Who is that?” I replied, ”I.” He said, ”I”, ”I?” He repeated it as if he disliked it. (2)
