Imaam Nawawi (rahimahullaah) said:
Know that the one (residing) in the worldly life is a guest and what he (possesses) in his hands is a loan-a guest is a traveller and a loan is to be repaid. The worldly life is something whose presence is visible and both the pious and evil sinner eat from it. It (i.e. blameworthy competition for the worldly things) is hateful to the friends of Allaah and beloved to the people of dunyah (i.e. those engage in blameworthy competition for it); so whoever competes them in that which is beloved to them, they will become angry with him…… up until the Imaam said: The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) directed a person to abstain from what the people possess if he wants the people to love him and that he abandons (blameworthy) love of the worldly life because there is nothing in the hands of the people that makes them hate one another and engage in (blameworthy) competition, except the worldly (things)
