[1] Series: Ten Means for The One Seeking Allaah’s Protection against Magic, The Evil Eye and Envy – By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Indeed, among the deadly diseases and great evil is the illness that can be found in a person due to magic, the evil eye or envy. Magic has an extremely (evil) effect on the person afflicted by it, for it can cause illness or death. Also this is the case with the evil eye of the envier when his (or her) soul conforms to malice and evil is intended in his (or her) heart; for indeed he (or she) can harm the one who is envied, rather it may bring about illness on the envied one or bring about death (i.e. by the will of Allaah). Magic is real and has an effect, and envy is real and has an effect.

Indeed, among the blessings bestowed on a believing slave is that he (or she) has been facilitated with blessed means and beneficial things through which the evil of these ones is repelled, and their harm and the calamity that comes about as a result of (their evil) is stopped.

Indeed, Al-Allaamah Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) summarised (those means of protection) into ten great affairs; and if a (believing) servant fulfils and applies them, the evil of the envier, the (evil) of the one who afflicts with the evil eye and the (evil of the) magician will cease.

The first means (of protection):

To seek Allaah’s Refuge against their evil, and seek fortification and shelter from Allaah, just as Allaah (The Most High) said:

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ

مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ

وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak; From the evil of what He has created; And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away). And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots; And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” [Surah Al-Falaq]

Allaah (The Most High) hears the one who seeks His Refuge and knows what the person is seeking refuge against. Allaah is able to do all things and He alone is the One from Whom refuge is sought – none amongst His creation [has the right and the power to be invoked)] for refuge nor for shelter besides Him; rather He is The One Who gives refuge to those who (invoke) Him for refuge. He is the One Who protects and shelters them against the evil of that which they seek refuge against.

The reality of seeking refuge is to flee from something that terrifies a person and (seek protection) from one who can protect and give shelter. There is neither a protector for a servant nor one to grant him (or her) refuge besides Allaah. Allaah (Glorified Be He) suffices the one who relies on Him and He is enough for the one who seeks shelter from Him. Allaah is the One who provides safety against the fear of the one who is fearful and gives support to the one who seeks support. He an Excellent Protector and an Excellent Helper. [Ref 1]
