The Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:
”I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right…..”[Reported by Imaam Abu Dawud (rahimahullaah). Hadeeth Number 4800. Declared Hasan By Imaam Albaani (rahimahullaah) in his checking of Abu Daawud. Publisher Maktabah Al-Ma’aarif]
In Sharh Hilyah Taalib Al-Ilm page 245 Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) stated that it may be that a person is in the right whilst arguing with another person about something that is not related to the religion, for example he says: “I saw such and such person in the market” and the other person says, “Rather I saw him in the Masjid”, and thus an argument occurs between them. This is the type of argument mentioned in the hadeeth (i.e. the one that should be abandoned by a person even if he is in the right). [Paraphrased] See Arabic text starting from:
[لكن قد يكون محقا إذا كان تخاصمه هو وصاحبه بشيء ليس له علاقة بالدين أصلا]
[End of Arabic text]
Therefore, we should never prolong these types of discussions mentioned by Shaikh Uthaymeen and what is similar to them, especially if it is going to lead to rancour or time wasting, rather we should be greedy with our time and utilise it in that which will busy the heart and the mind in that which is more beneficial and productive. If a good brother or sister is oblivious of this, then one does his (or her) best to divert the topic to something else in order to prevent and eradicate all that will lead to rancour and time wasting. This is what I remind and advise myself, and likewise it is what I remind my Salafi brothers and sisters at Al-Markazus Salafi (may Allaah preserve them and all the Salafiyoon in the other Maraakiz, centres, cities and towns). All praise is due to Allaah, we are all united in Aqeedah and Manhaj, so we strive to implement that in our dealings between one another- with love and compassion for one another. May Allaah bless you all.
Finally, there is a lot of benefit mentioned by Shaikh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) related to the affair of discussion without blameworthy debate in the religion -which we are free from and all praise is due to Allaah- but it is presented here only as a reminder because reminder benefits the believers.
