What is the First Affair We Should Hold Ourselves to Account for? – Shaykh Muhammad b. Hādi:

Shaykh Muhammad (hafidahullāh) began his lecture on ‘Taking Oneself to Account’, by praising Allāh and sending salāt and salām upon the final Prophet Muhammad (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam), then he proceeded to say:

There is not a person who speaks about the topic of ‘Holding Oneself to Account’, except that he must ponder on Allāh’s statement:

{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ – كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ اللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُوا مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ}

O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do rnot do? Most hateful it is with Allāh that you say that which you do not do. (As-Saff 2-3)

My brothers in Islam, indeed Allāh (The Exalted, The Most High) did not create us except to worship Him and obey him – to single Him out with all worship, remain steadfast in fulfilling His commands and refrain from His prohibitions, actualising tawhīd and the sound creed which the Messenger of Allah came with (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam).

Therefore, it is a must that the servant begins with himself; first and foremost, he holds his soul to account because Allah said in his Tremendous Book,

أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى

Does man think that he will be left Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him]?
(Al-Qiyāmah: 36)

At the head of affairs which Allāh (Glorified and free from all imperfections) has commanded is Tawhīd and to single Him out in worship; therefore it is a must that we contemplate on this affair and hold ourselves to account regarding the actualisation of Tawhīd for Allāh alone – the Tawhīd upon which the acceptance of actions depends, those actions which (if actualised based on Tawhīd) will benefit a person when he is stands in front of his Lord on the Day of Resurrection.

Due to this, the first affair we must hold ourselves to account is the worship of Allah alone – purifying ourselves from Shirk, major and minor, that which nullifies these actions, in part or in their entirety. Therefore, actualise Tawhīd so that you will become a true servant of Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic). A servant fears for himself with regards to actualising Tawhīd and staying away from shirk. The father of the prophets, Ibrahīm (alayhis salām) supplicated to Allah saying:

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا الْبَلَدَ آمِنًا وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَن نَّعْبُدَ الْأَصْنَامَ

And (remember) when Ibrahīm (Abraham) said: “O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) one of peace and security, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. (Ibrahīm: 35)

He supplicated with this supplication, despite the fact that he was a prophet of Allāh, the Khaleel of Allāh, and Allāh had protected him from worshipping idols. If this is how Ibrahīm (alayhis salām) was, then how about us?

Paraphrased and Abridged from the Shaykh’s (Allāh preserve him) lecture entitled “محاسبة النفس” which he delivered on the 2nd of November 2015 at the Islamic University of Madīnah.
