[22] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ -[Memorise knowledge, Then Preserve it Through Action and Implementation]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

The Salaf [pious predecessors] used to say: If you want to retain the hadeeth in your memory, then act upon it, for indeed acting makes knowledge remain firm [i.e. in one’s memory as well as preserved]. If a person reads but does not act, then indeed he loses knowledge. I advise you to memorise knowledge, then preserve it through action and implementation.

Perform the prayer as if Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] is in front of you. [The Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam) said], ‘’Pray as you have seen me pray.’’ When you say Allaahu Akbar, then contemplate on the way the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] used to performed Takbeer; [contemplate] on the way he used to recite, the way he was in a state of humility whilst reciting, the state he was in whilst performing Rukoo and what he said in his Sujood etc.

[Likewise, regarding his interactions, contemplate on], how he dealt with the people, his Muslim brothers and his enemies based on this [perfect] code of conduct [i.e. his authentic Sunnah]. A person should always give consideration to the teachings of Allaah’s Messenger, his [authentic] Sunnah and deeds as if they are being carried out in his presence. This is the knowledge which Allaah praised and [likewise praised] its possessors.  [Allaah said]:

[يَرۡفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجَـٰتٍ۬‌ – Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge].  [Surah Al-Mujaadilah’ Aayah 11]

Therefore, [the affair is not about] knowledge on its own- through memorisation and that’s it; rather a person should learn, act, nurture [himself (or herself) and others], call to this knowledge and what it necessitates in relation to Aqeedah, acts of worship and manners.

The scholars -those about whom Allaah bore witness that they are the ones who truly fear Him- are the ones specifically mention as people of khashyah. [Ref 1]  [Allaah said]: [إِنَّمَا يَخۡشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِ ٱلۡعُلَمَـٰٓؤُاْۗ – It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that will truly have awe of Allaah]. [Surah Faatir’ Aayah 28]

This category of scholars -those who act upon knowledge – are the ones whom Allaah praised and raise their status, and they are the ones who truly fear Him. When Allaah praises them that they possess Eemaan or praises them through any other characteristic, then all that due to beneficial knowledge and the righteous actions [i.e. due the fact that they possess beneficial knowledge and are performers of righteous deeds].

Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ pages 78 – 80. abridged and slightly paraphrased

Ref 1: Awe [al-khashyah) is fear founded upon knowledge of the greatness of the One whom he fears, and the complete and perfect Sovereignty and Dominion that is His, since Allaah, the Most High, says, [إِنَّمَا يَخۡشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِ ٱلۡعُلَمَـٰٓؤُاْۗ  – Only those who have knowledge will truly have awe of Allaah]. Meaning those who know of His greatness and perfect Sovereignty. It is something more particular than fear, and the difference between it and fear will become clear by giving an example: If you fear someone, but you do not know whether he is able to catch you or not, then this is fear (khawf). But when you fear someone and know that he is fully able to seize hold of you then that is fear/dread (khashyah). [Source: Explanation of the three fundamental principles’ page 51. [21] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Knowledge is Preserved When Acted Upon and Implemented]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

The manners of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] have been recorded in voluminous books – regarding his patience, forbearance, leniency, sense of honour, nobility and mercy. He is an example for us in these characteristics which are obligated on us to implement. [Allaah said]:

[لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ۬ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأَخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرً۬ا  – Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah [Muhammad] you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in [the Meeting with] Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. [Surah Al-Ahzaab’ Aayah 21]

It is not for the one who makes [mere] claims, rather it is [لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأَخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرً۬ا – for him who hopes in [the Meeting with] Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much].

Therefore, O youth! Be from this lofty category of people [or adhere to this lofty type of characteristics]. The Ummah needs these qualities which the Book of Allaah has acquainted us with and transmitted its texts, [and likewise its texts have been transmitted in the authentic Sunnah] with specific objectives [or goals] related to Aqeedah, acts of worship, politics, unity, manners, economics and in every sphere of life. Therefore, neither take a single step nor proceed to perform a deed except based on clear-sightedness and [sound] knowledge, and through acting and implementation knowledge is preserved.

[20] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Pondering Upon The Qur’aan]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

Indeed, the Qur’aan has commended – a lot – the affair of knowledge and the scholars. Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] said: [إِنَّمَا يَخۡشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِ ٱلۡعُلَمَـٰٓؤُاْۗ – It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah]. [Surah Faatir’ Aayah 28]

The scholars who act upon knowledge – those who benefit from the knowledge of [the Sharee’ah]- know Allaah by His [Perfect] Names and Attributes. They know Allaah and exalt Him due to their knowledge of Allaah’s [Perfect] Names and Attributes; therefore, whenever one reads and comes across an Aayah of the Qur’aan that [mentions] some of the [Perfect] Names and Attributes of Allaah, it should increase him [or her] in Eemaan; especially the Aayaat regarding Tawheed, and the [Perfect] Names and Attributes of Allaah. [Allaah said]:

The believers are only those who, when Allaah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses [this Qur’an] are recited unto them, they [i.e. the Verses] increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord [Alone]. They perform the prayer and spend out of that We have provided them. [Surah Al-Anfaal’ Aayaat 2-3]

Whenever the Aayaat are recited to those believers – those who achieve this great status which Allaah [mentioned and attributed] to those scholars who truly act upon knowledge; the learned people of sound understanding, who possess a firm and sound understanding of the Qur’aan – they increase in Eemaan until their Eemaan becomes like mountains.

These scholars – the ones whom Allaah [mentioned with praise] – possess a firm and sound understanding of the Qur’aan and they increase in Eemaan through recitation of its Aayaat. They ponder upon the  Aayaat that [mention] Tawheed, the Aayaat that [mention] the [Perfect] Names and Attributes of Allaah, the Aayaat that [mention] Tawheed Al-Ibaadah, the Aayaat regarding  Allaah’s promise, the Aayaat regarding Allaah’s threat-which are many in the Great Qur’aan-, the description of Paradise and its bliss- its castles, Hoor [fair females with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious)], and its gardens and rivers; and [they ponder upon the description] of the hell fire – its  Agh’laal [iron chains, iron collars], hardship and severe punishment- we seek Allaah’s Refuge from it. So, he [or she] believes in this Jannah and thus increases in desire for it; and believes in the fire and thus increases in fear of it, because he [or she] is a believer- one who knows and acts.

[19] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [One Must Have Good Thoughts About Allaah, Strive to Be Sincere And Guard His [or Her] Heart, etc]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

It is obligated on us to possess some understanding, awareness and high aspiration that will enable us to realise the [high] status of knowledge and its possessors, because “Whoever Allaah wishes good for, He gives him understanding in the religion.’’[Ref 1]

When you actually embark on the path towards seeking knowledge- seeking [a sound] understanding of it and acting upon it-, this is indeed one of the signs that Allaah wishes good for you. Therefore, receive glad tidings and have good thoughts about Allaah, and be sincere to Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] in your statements, deeds and knowledge. Neither be deceived [by yourself] – we seek Allaah’s Refuge from self-deception – nor feel safe from Allaah’s plan. [Allaah said]: [فَلَا يَأۡمَنُ مَڪۡرَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ – None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers. [ Surah Al-A’raaf’ Aayah 99]

A believer always fears that his [or her] situation will change. It has been reported from Aa’isha and Anas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] that the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] often used to [supplicate]: “O turner of the hearts [i.e. Allaah]! Keep my heart firm upon your religion.” I [i.e. Aa’isha or Anas] asked: O Messenger of Allaah! We believe in you and what has been revealed to you, so do you fear for us? He said, ‘’Yes, indeed the hearts are between two fingers among the fingers of Allaah and He turns them [i.e. the hearts] how He pleases. ‘’ [Ref 2]

By Allaah! This is [true] understanding – that a person does not feel safe about himself [or herself], for indeed ” Satan flows through the human being like blood.” [Ref 3] Therefore, a person should guard his heart, intellect and deeds ardently – more than the [way] he guards his wealth and honour. Whoever is given authority to look after his own affairs, it is obligated on him [or her] to guard his heart before everything else.

Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower]. [ Surah Aal Imraan’ Aayah 8]

[18] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [The Messenger Was Commanded to Increase in Knowledge Even Though He Is the Most knowledgeable of all The Scholars]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

Indeed, Allaah did not command the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] to seek [an increase] in worldly things [i.e. the permissible things], rather Allaah commanded him to seek an increase in knowledge. [Allaah said]:  وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِى عِلۡمً۬ا –  And say: “My Lord! Increase me in knowledge]. [Surah Taha Aayah 114]

[Allaah] did not [command to the Messenger to say]: ‘’And say: My Lord! Increase me in wealth or Dunyah [i.e. the worldly things] or authority’’; rather [Allaah commanded him to say]: [وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِى عِلۡمً۬ا – And say: “My Lord! Increase me in knowledge].

This is one of the proofs regarding the nobility of knowledge and its [high] status in the Sight of Allaah. Even though the Messenger of Allaah [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] is the most knowledgeable of all the scholars, however his Lord still directed him to seek an increase in knowledge. Therefore, it is obligated on a student of knowledge to seek this knowledge [of the Sharee’ah] as the saying goes: “From the cradle to the grave [i.e. all your life]”. He should not consider himself a scholar at any time and that he has acquired his share of knowledge, rather he seeks an increase until his last breaths and moments of his life.

Imaam Ahmad [rahimahullaah] said: People are more in need of knowledge than food and drink, for indeed you can be sufficed with eating once or twice a day; but as for knowledge, you need it at every moment and with every breath you take. The people [i.e. Imaam Ahmad and others] who made this statement understood the importance of knowledge and action [i.e. acting upon knowledge].

[17] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Travelling to Seek Knowledge]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

It is obligated on us that we nurture ourselves, our children, our students and those whom our statements can reach to honour knowledge and fear Allaah based on what is found in the Qur’aan and the [authentic] Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]. Therefore, the goal behind knowledge is to obey Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] and His Messenger[sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] – affirm and believe everything Allaah and His Messenger have stated. Nothing reaches us from the Qur’aan or the authentic Sunnah, except that we must believe in it, and give it complete respect, veneration and reverence. This is what the noble companions [of the Messenger] and the pious predecessors used to do, for indeed they gave the highest regard to this knowledge [of the Sharee’ah] and the scholars. And due to the fact that they gave the highest regard to the knowledge [of the Sharee’ah], a man would travel -from the eastern regions of the earth to the western regions, and from the northern regions to the southern regions- to hear the hadeeth of the Messenger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] and seek understanding of the knowledge found in the Qur’aan; rather during the era of the Messenger  [alayhis salaatu wassalaam], a man would travel from the furthest regions of the Arabian peninsula to the Messenger of Allaah [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] to learn his religion, accompany the scholars and the callers to [the religion of] Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted].

The Taabi’een [i.e. students of the Sahaabah] travelled, rather the Sahaabah travelled [in search of knowledge]. Jaabir [radiyallaahu-anhu] travelled from Madeenah to Shaam for the sake of one hadeeth, and Abu Ayyoub Al Ansaari [radiyallaahu anhu] travelled from Madeenah to Misr for the sake of one hadeeth. Likewise, the Imaams of Hadeeth and Tafseer travelled from the eastern regions of the earth to the western regions to learn the knowledge [of the Sharee’ah]. Why was this the case? That is because they knew the status of knowledge, its nobility in the Dunyah and the Aakhirah, and that Allaah raises [high] the status of its possessors.

Where Are Those Wealthy People Who Threaten The Needy People, Saying: ”Unless You Help Me Commit Injustice, You Will Not Receive Any Financial Help From Me Again”

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Yahyaa Ibn Mu’aadh [rahimahullaah] said: The creation [i.e. mankind and Jinn] have not heard [anything] similar to two calamities [that afflicts] a person in relation to his wealth at the time of death; so it was said: What are they? He said: All of it is taken away from him [i.e. he will leave it behind for others] and he will be questioned about all of it [i.e. he will be questioned about it in the Hereafter- how he earned and spent it].

[16B] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm – [The Goal Behind Knowledge Is to Acquire Sound Understanding In Affairs of Aqeedah, Worship, Good Manners, Good Etiquettes etc]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

This [i.e. guarding one’s speech and deeds based on knowledge of the Qur’aan and Sunnah] is beneficial knowledge – praiseworthy knowledge – in the Sight of Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted]. The possessor of this knowledge is one regarded to be in a praiseworthy situation because when he utters statements, perform deeds and acts of worship, he pays close attention to the fact that Allaah [sees and hears him, and knows everything about him], and he does so sincerely for the Sake of Allaah. He worships Allaah as if he can see Allaah, but even though he cannot see Allaah [i.e. in this worldly life], he [firmly] believes that Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] sees him, knows everything in his soul and heart, and knows everything he needs. He knows this because of his strong awareness -whilst engaged in worship and in all other affairs of his life- that Allaah [sees and hears him, and knows everything about him].

Knowledge is not merely about studying and obtaining certificates, rather the goal [or aim] is to acquire sound and precise understanding – sound understanding in affairs of Aqeedah, worship, good manners, good etiquettes and everything related to the life of a believer.  It is obligated on the believers to carry out everything related to their lives based on the Book of Allaah and the [authentic] sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]. The believer performs acts of worship sincerely for the Sake of Allaah because Allaah commanded him [or her] to be sincere. [Allaah (The Blessed and Exalted) said]:

وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ‌ۚ وَذَٲلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ

And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion. [Surah Al-Bayyinah’ Aayah 5]
