[63] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Regarding The One Who Knows Little, Pretends to Be a Scholar And Distances The People From The Upright Scholars, And Followed By a More Detailed Clarification From Salafipublication Regarding The Term ‘Al-Asaaghir’]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

One of the obstacles that prevents people from [acquiring] knowledge is [when they] turn to the knowledge of the Asaaghir [the small ones] – and Allaah’s refuge is sought. And from the [minor] signs of the hour [i.e. the day of judgement] is that knowledge will be acquired from the young in age, who learn very little and thus considers himself an Aalim!

This person is young and a Miskeen [i.e. one lacking strength in the field of knowledge], but considers himself as one who has reached the highest level; so the ignoramuses come to him, gather around him and cut off from the scholars – and Allaah’s refuge is sought. This is one of the [minor] signs and portents of the hour, when the people abandon the senior scholars and embark upon acquiring knowledge from the ignorant young ones – those who pretend to be scholars. This is a calamity. Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] said: “The people will not cease to be upon good as long as they acquire knowledge from their elder, trustworthy ones and scholars.”

Contemplate on this statement, “And if they acquire knowledge from their young ones, they will be destroyed.”

This is one of the obstacles and barriers to acquiring knowledge. It may be that some people desire knowledge, but he [i.e. an individual] becomes deceived by that young person and considers him to be the most knowledgeable of people. And had he gone to other than that young person, he would find that it is obligated on that young person to seek knowledge together with him, and sit down in the presence of the scholars.

Obstacles In The Path of Knowledge

[62] Excepts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [A Similitude Regarding Those Who Abandoned Acting After Knowledge Came to Them]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The likeness of those who were entrusted with the [obligation of the] Taurat, but who subsequently failed in those [obligations], is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books [but understands nothing from them]. How bad is the example [or the likeness] of people who deny the Ayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are wrong-doers.

[Surah Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayah 5]

They [i.e. the corrupt scholars amongst Bani Israa’eel] abandoned acting upon the knowledge that was revealed to Moosaa [alayhis salaam], so Allaah likened them to a donkey carrying huge burdens of books. A donkey cannot distinguish whether something good or evil is on top of it – does not know whether it is carrying a living thing or books. Likewise, this is the likeness of the one who does not act.

It is incumbent upon us to establish the Salaah, give Zakaat, fast during the month of Ramadhaan and perform hajj [i.e. hajj obligated on those who can afford it] in the manner legislated by Allaah [i.e. based on the evidences found in Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam), and not based on innovations in religion].

It is incumbent upon us to [hold onto] the sound creed in the manner Allaah legislated it for us; keeping away from Shirk, Bidah and all types of disobedience to Allaah. We should act upon what Allaah has taught us [i.e. knowledge found in the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah as understood by the Sahaabah].

We should believe in the sound creed, and [we should] fight against Shirk and all types of bidah [i.e. teach Tawheed, the authentic Sunnah and the path of the Sahaabah, and refute Shirk and Bidah], enjoin good and forbid evil. This is all considered to be part of acting upon [knowledge after acquiring it].

Your knowledge decreases depending on your shortcomings in any affair, and the rebuke a person receives will depend on [how much he has] abandoned that which Allaah has taught him [i.e. the knowledge he has acquired from the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah as understood by the Sahaabah].

[61] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [How Would We Purify Our Souls From The Hidden And Visible Impure Traits In The Absence of Acting Upon What We Have Learnt?!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

One of the obstacles to [acquiring] knowledge and the [causes] of the disappearance of knowledge is when you do not act upon what you have learnt. Therefore, O students of knowledge! It is incumbent upon us to act upon what we have learnt. Sound knowledge is that which purifies the souls, [so] how would you purify the soul if you do not act?!

How would you be cleansed from the blameworthy, impure hidden traits [in the heart and soul] and the evil traits that are visible, such as bad manners, arrogance, [blameworthy] envy, coveteousness and showoff, [if you do not act]? All these deeds occur as a result of not applying knowledge. [If] you possess knowledge of any affair, [then] knowledge urges you towards sincerity. Your Lord [The Blessed and Exalted] said:

وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءوَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ

And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allaah, and worship none but Him Alone, and perform the prayer and give Zakat; and that is the right religion. [Surah Al-Bayyinah’ Aayah 5]

How many times has Allaah censured the [scholars of the] Yahood and Nasaaraa because they do not act? You have heard a similitude that was given about a scholar amongst the scholars of Bani Israa’eel: “The likeness of those who were entrusted with the [obligation of the] Taurat, but who subsequently failed in those [obligations], is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books [but understands nothing from them]. How bad is the example [or the likeness] of people who deny the Ayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are wrong-doers. [Surah Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayah 5]

They acquired knowledge of the Tawraat but did not act upon it, so that led them to disbelief in Allaah. Had they acted upon what is in the Tawraat which was revealed to Moosaa [alayhis salaam], they would have believed in Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], but neither did they act upon what was in the Tawraat nor what was in the Injeel, nor what Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] came with, [rather] they belied him.

Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ page 226. slightly paraphrased

[60] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [The Grave Dangers of Not Acting Upon The Knowledge We Have Acquired]- O Allaah! Protect Us From All Evil In This Life And The Next, Aameen

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Indeed, Allaah severely censured the one who does not act [upon knowledge he has acquired]. Allaah said:

And recite [O Muhammad] to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Aayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.], but he threw them away, so Shaitan [satan] followed him up, and he became of those who went astray. And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he [still] lolls his tongue out. [Surah Al-A’raaf’ Aayaat 175 – 176]

This person fell into disbelief due to not acting upon [the knowledge he acquired] and due to not honouring the divine revelation. An absence of honouring and applying this knowledge which you have gained and mastered will lead you to Bidah; it might lead you to sinful [immoral behaviour] and it might lead you to kufr. This person [mentioned in Surah Al-A’raaf Aayaat 175-176] was a prominent scholar, but he threw away the knowledge which Allaah entrusted on him due to not acting upon it. Many people do not act upon [the knowledge they have acquired], so he [i.e. the individual] is led towards sinful deeds, because he does not act upon [the knowledge he has acquired]. Allaah said:

 كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ اللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُوا مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ

Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do.[Surah As-Saff’ Aayah 3]

Allaah’s Aid is sought, [an absence of acting upon the knowledge he has acquired] might lead him to fall into Bidah and misguidance, and maybe that the Bidah he falls into is kufriyyah [Ref 1], or he might fall into kufr straight away – and Allaah’s Aid is sought. [Source: Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ page 225. Slightly paraphrased

Ref 1:  Bidah Al-Mukaffirah and Bidah al-Mufassiqah

Bidah Al-Mukaffirah: It is the Bidah that is tantamount to disbelief. Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi Al-Madkhali (may Allaah preserve him) was asked whether there is a difference between Bidah Al-Mukaffirah and Bidah Al-Mufassiqah; so Shaikh said that there is Bidah Mukaffirah, such as rejecting the Ruyah (i.e. denying that the believers will see Allaah in the afterlife); rejecting Allaah’s Uluww [i.e. denying that Allaah is above his creation –Allaah ascended over the Throne in a way that benefits his majesty)]; invoking other than Allaah; offering slaughtered sacrifice (i.e. animals) to other than Allaah etc. These are affairs of Bidah Al-Mukaffirah (the bidah that is tantamount to disbelief).

But we do not make Takfeer of the people who commit this type of Bidah until we establish the proofs against them. That is because some of them (i.e. the people who fall into these affairs) carry doubts and are far away from the era of Prophethood and its light (i.e. guidance). So they fall into the likes these innovations.

Rejecting the Ruyah is disbelief; rejecting Allaah’s Uluww is disbelief; the saying that the Qur’aan is created is disbelief-major disbelief. But this person, -[who testifies that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah, and he prays,  observes fasting, wants paradise and believes in that] -received the doubts of the people of falsehood, so he falls into the likes of these affairs (i.e. these innovations that are tantamount to disbelief). So we say to him: You have fallen into disbelief and the evidence is this and this, and we clarify for him.  So if Allaah grants him Tawfeeq and he returns to the truth, then all praise is due to Allaah. But if not, we declare him a disbeliever after establishing the proofs against him.

As for Bidah Al-Mufassiqah it is other than this (i.e. it is not at the level of that which is tantamount to disbelief)…. [Abridged and paraphrased, see www.rabee.net/ar/questions.php?cat=26&id=484 ]

On the other hand, who are those qualified to make Takfeer?

Question: O Respected Shaykh, who is the murtadd (apostate)? We hope for you to define it in a clear manner, for sometimes the judgement of apostasy can be made upon a person while there is some doubt that he had.

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzaan: “The judgement of apostasy and expelling someone from the religion is only appropriate for the people of knowledge who are firmly grounded in knowledge, and they are the judges in the various Sharee’ah law courts, and those who are able of giving legal verdicts. And this is just like the other matters, and it is not the right of every person, or from the right of those who are learning, or those who ascribe themselves to knowledge, but who have deficiency in understanding. It is not appropriate for them to make judgements of apostasy (upon others). Since, mischief will arise from this, and sometimes a Muslim might be judged as an apostate but he is not actually so. And the takfir of a Muslim who has not committed one of the nullifications of Islaam contains great danger. Whoever says to his brother “O Kaafir” or “O Faasiq, and he is not like that, then the words will fall back upon the one who said them. Hence, the ones who actually judge with apostasy are the legislative judges and those who are able and fit for giving legal verdicts. And as for those who enforce the judgements they are the leaders of the Muslims (wullaat al-amr). As for whatever is other than this, then it is mere confusion.”

Question: Some of the students of knowledge are a bit lax towards applying the word of apostasy (riddah) to a Muslim, and this person might sometimes be asked by the Muslims to carry out the hadd punishment for apostasy – when the Sultaan does not carry it out – upon the one they consider deserves it, the one who has been judged with apostasy.

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzaan: “Meting out the punishments is only appropriate for the leader of the Muslims and it is not for every person to establish the punishment, since confusion, and corruption necessarily follows from this, and also the cutting off of the society, tribulations and provocations occur. Establishing the punishments is appropriate (i.e. befits only) to the Muslim leader. The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Pardon each other for the punishments that are between you, but when the execution of the punishment reaches the [authority of the] Sultaan, then Allaah curses both the one who seeks intercession and the one who grants the intercession [i.e. to revoke the punishment].

And from the responsibilities of the Sultaan in Islaam, and from those matters that befit him is the establishment of the punishments after they have been established legislatively, via the Sharee’ah law courts, upon the one who fell into the crime for which the legislator has designated a specific punishment, such as for stealing. So what has been said is that establishing the punishments (i.e. meting them out) is from the rights of the Sultaan, and when the Muslims do not have a Sultaan amongst them, then they should just suffice with commanding the good and forbidding the evil, and calling to Allaah, the Might and Majestic, with wisdom, good admonition and arguing with that which is best. And it is not permissible for individuals (in the society) to establish the hudood, since that, as we have mentioned, will bring about chaos, and also provocations, and tribulations will arise, and this contains greater corruption than it contains rectification. And from amongst the Sharee’ah principles that are submitted to is, “Repelling the harmful things takes precedence over bringing about the beneficial things.

[59] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Bidah, Fasaad And Fitan Are Obstacles to Acquiring Sound Knowledge]

In The Name if Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
The obstacles to [sound] knowledge are present due to ignorance, bidah and Fitan. Fitan becomes rife whenever [sound] knowledge is little. Whenever [sound] knowledge is little, the arenas of Fitan expand, Fasaad and murder becomes rife, and every type of Fasaad becomes rife, such as Tabarruj and Zinaa. These affairs are also reasons and obstacles that prevent [people] from being thirsty for [sound] knowledge. One looks for [upright] scholars, but cannot find any in his country due to the [fact that] Fasaad and ignorance is rife.

[58] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [The Fitan Are Obstacles to Seeking Knowledge]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
[The presence] of many Fitan is one of the  obstacles to seeking knowledge. Indeed,  Allaah’s Messenger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] did mention these Fitan. He said: “Time will pass [rapidly], knowledge will disappear, immorality will appear, miserliness will be [thrown] in the hearts of the people and Al-Harj [killing, murder] will increase.”
[Bukhaari 6037 and Muslim 157]
These affairs that were mentioned by the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] have occured – the disappearance of knowledge, the rapid passing of time, the appearance of Fitan and miserliness, and murder will increase. You can – at present – see the killing in the Islamic world and other than it.
This is one of the [minor] signs of the hour and it is one of the obstacles to seeking knowledge. You can see that knowledge has been taken away [i.e. from many places]. The Messenger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] stated in another hadeeth: “Indeed, Allaah does not take away knowledge after giving it, rather He takes away knowledge by the death of the [upright and rightly guided] scholars till when none of the scholars remain, [then] people will take ignorant ones as their leaders, who will give verdicts without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray.” [Bukhaari 100 and Muslim 2673]

[57] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [The One Whose Haughtiness And Ignorance Led Him to Say That The Scholars Are Ignorant]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

That home of the Hereafter [i.e. Paradise], We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqoon [pious]. [Surah Al-Qasas’Aayah 83]
The home of the Hereafter is prepared for those who are humble for the sake of Allaah, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will raise him. [As for the haughty [people], Allaah hates them and their destination is the fire – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought.
Major Kufr and Bidah stops a person from [receiving] the delight [found in the] truth and guidance brought by the Prophets, and that which purifies the souls [i.e. makes the souls upright]. How many people have been deprived of seeking knowledge due to haughtiness [or pride] – this extremely despicable traite! [He says], “How can I seek knowledge from such and such person and he is not a scholar, and he is a Jaahil?”
[He says that the] scholars are ignoramuses and thinks that he is a scholar, even though he is an ignoramus, for indeed whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus, just as Ibn Mas’ood said, “Whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus.”

[56] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Protect The Youth From The Disseminators of Destructive Ideas]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Many newspapers [or journals] call to corruption. [Its authors, writers, editors etc] want to fling the Ummah into the arms of the Yahood and Nasaaraa. They constantly – day and night – disseminate destructive views that will destroy the [sound, authentic, upright etc] religion, [upright] manners, the sound methodology in every aspect of Islaam and the [sound] intellects of the people. Likewise, many internet websites in the world corrupt [the people] – corrupt even those who possess some knowledge let alone the ignorant people.
Therefore, it is obligated on the Muslims to reflect on these affairs and safeguard themselves, protect their religion, manners and their youth. They should not present to a youth except that which benefits him, and should remove and rescue the Ummah from its problematic [situation].
Perhaps there are many people who do not desire these [difficult circumstances], but there are [means] that urges the soul of the person who desires knowledge, however he [either] does not seek after it, or he seeks after it, but fails to acquire that which is necessary [obligatory] in order to convey to the people, teach and guide them.

[55] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Those Who Crave For Knowledge But Cannot Reach It Due To Hurdles And Obstacles Beyond Their Control]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestowed of Merc

Many youth are thirsty for seeking knowledge, but they face many, many obstacles that arise from their localities – either because there are no scholars from the locality or the country they live in is a barrier between them and seeking knowledge; or the country that is to accept [or welcome their applications, requests for seeking knowledge] has conditions that [make it possible for] a few to be accepted and prevents many from entering into the domain of [seeking] knowledge.
We ask Allaah to grant the Muslims and their rulers [the ability, means etc] to put an end to these obstacles that are placed in front of the students of knowledge, because at present the Ummah is in need of scholars.
At present the Ummah is in a very degraded state – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought; a state of humiliation, disrespected and [faced] with problems, which cannot cease except with the presence of erudite scholars – those who study, [convey, transmit etc] knowledge from its precise sources, spread this knowledge that will make the Ummah wide-awake from its slumber- the true knowledge brought by the Prophets [alayhimus salaatu wassalaam].
And the main affair among these affairs [of knowledge] is the subject matter of Tawheed [Islamic monotheism], because misguidance has spread in the Islamic world, ignorance, superstitious beliefs and bidah, which none can stop except Allaah, by way of scholars who [convey, transmit etc] knowledge from its precise sources – spreading it just as they acquired it from the Book of Allaah and the [authentic] Sunnah of Allaah’s Messsnger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam].
At present you find localities in which there are no scholars. It may be that a student of knowledge is poor and is unable to travel – faces obstacles that are a barrier between him and knowledge. [Therefore], it is obligated on the scholars to examine [or look into these] affairs, and [likewise] the rulers. They should fear Allaah with regards to [making an effort to] eliminate these hurdles that stand in the way of thousands of youth – those who crave for knowledge, but face these hurdles and obstacles, and they are not able [to do anything] except to submit to these [hurdles, obstacles etc] that are beyond [one’s control].
