Fire is Better than Clay? Benefits from Shaytān’s Refusal to Prostrate to Ādam – Shaykh Fawzān, Additional Benefits from Shaykh ibn Bāz

Shaykh Fawzān (hafidahullāh) in explaining the events surrounding Iblees’s disobedience of Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic) said,

Allah – jalla wa ‘alaa – commanded the angels to prostrate to Ādam; a prostration of greeting and not a prostration of worship, because prostration of worship is not allowed except for Allāh (t’āla). So all of the Angels prostrated together, except Iblīs, for indeed he was envious of Ādam (alayhis salām), and [Allaah said that Iblees] said,

[Iblis (Satan)] said: “I am better than him, You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.” (Sād:78)

He claimed that clay had no benefit within it, whilst claiming that fire has benefit. And this is a false analogy, because clay is better than fire; fire burns and does not bring forth (anything), whereas clay brings forth seedlings and agriculture/farming and yields goodness. Therefore clay, has goodness within it, however Iblīs was blinded of this and boasted about (being created from) fire,

You created me from fire

And he did not envision what was in clay of goodness and blessing. (1)

Al-Imām ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) in explanation of prostrating to Ādam and Yusuf (alayhimus salātu was salām) said,

This was a deed which was specified in the divine law revealed to Yoosuf [alayhis salaam], and likewise was the case when the Angels prostrated to Aadam- a specific prostration which Allaah allowed the Angels to perform and [likewise] the brothers of Yusuf.

As for the divine law that was revealed to Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], it is not permissible to prostrate to anyone elss besides Allaah alone. None is to prostrate to another person, neither to one’s father nor to a husband, nor anyone else. When some of the companions prostrated to the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], he forbade them from that. As for in the divine law that was revealed to Yusuf [alayhis salaam], that prostration was performed as an act greeting and a sign of respect, but not an act of worship. It was permissible in the divine law that was revealed to Yusuf [alayhis salaam] but forbidden in the divine law that was revealed to Muhammad.

Likewise, the prostration of the Angels to Aadam was a prostration of greeting and respect and not a prostration of worship. (2)

You are a Servant of Allāh or a Servant of Shaytān – Shaykh Fawzān

Shaykh Al-Fawzān (hafidahullāh) said,

“The most noble of actions is worshipping Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic) alone; that you are an [obedient or submissive] servant of Allāh. Whosoever is not a servant of Allāh, he becomes a servant of Shaytān. He is a servant in all situations, either he is a servant of Allāh – worshipping Allāh alone and his heart attached to (the worship of) Allāh; or he is a servant of Shaytān. There is no way out of [these two types of] servitude.”

[79] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Knowledge Should Be Implemented And Allaah Is Not to Be Worshipped Based On Ignorance Or Desires]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

It has been reported in an authentic hadeeth -[in Saheeh Al Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim]- that: “A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire, then his intestines will spill forth in the Fire and he will go around it as a donkey goes around a millstone. The people of Hell will gather around him and will say: O So and so! What is the matter with you; did you not use to enjoin good and forbid evil? He will say: Yes, I used to enjoin good, but did not do it; and I used to forbid evil and did it [i.e. commit the evil I used to forbid. [Al-Bukhaari 3267 & Muslim 2989]

After quoting this Hadeeth, Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said: Indeed, there maybe someone who is worse than this man, for he [i.e. the one worse than the man mentioned in this Hadeeth] enjoins evil and forbids good, so what will be his state of affairs, and Allaah’s Refuge is sought?! Therefore, seeking knowledge should be for the sake of Allaah and also to act [upon it], otherwise knowledge will be a cause of evil upon [the seeker] and thus he’ll remain in two situations- either in a situation where one is afflicted with the disease of ignorance or in a state where one is not benefited by knowledge, rather it becomes harmful knowledge. The knowledge Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] brought is beneficial in and of itself, but if a person does not act [i.e. after acquiring it], it will be a cause of evil and harm for him and he might [also] harm others. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

And say [O Muhammad] “Do deeds! Allaah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you of what you used to do. [Surah At-tawbah. Aayah 105]

Act based on knowledge and know Allaah by His Perfect Names and Attributes -from Allaah’s Book [i.e. the Qur’aan] and the [authentic] Sunnah of His Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]. Worship Allaah based on that which the Messenger conveyed [i.e. the authentic Sunnah] and based on the texts of the Qur’aan. Neither worship Allaah based on ignorance nor desires, rather worship Allaah based on knowledge. That which is sought after from seeking knowledge is to act upon it, and acting cannot be [fulfilled] except after acquiring knowledge, just as Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] said:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ۗ

So know [O Muhammad] that Laa ilaaha ill-Allah [none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah], and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for [the sin of] believing men and believing women. [Surah Muhammad. Aayah 19]

Imaam Al-Bukhaari wrote a chapter based on this Aayah, saying: Chapter: “Knowledge precedes speech and action”,  because it is obligated on us to act based on knowledge and we are only to worship Allaah based on knowledge. We do not worship Allaah based on ignorance or desires.

[78] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Jahl is a Disease and Ilm Destroys The One Who Does Not Act Upon It]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadee [hafidhahullaah] said:

Knowledge has great status in the sight of Allaah. Those who are truthful in the path of seeking knowledge – those who are sincere and act upon what they know – will earn a great reward by way of which Allaah will raise their status [in this life and the next], and they are those who possess that fear of Allaah [founded upon sound knowledge regarding Allaah’s Greatness, Dominion and Perfect Sovereignty over everything], just as Allaah said: [إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ – It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah]. [Surah Faatir. Aayah 28]

The scholar who fears Allaah – the one who is [constantly conscious of the fact that Allah sees, hears and knows everything about him] – will act upon what he knows, seek after Allaah’s pleasure and keep away from what angers Allaah. He knows what pleases Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] and what angers Allaah.

Indeed, Allaah and His Messenger praised knowledge and the scholars, and the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] informed us that the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets; however, not every scholar is an inheritor of the prophets; rather one has to be sincere in the path of knowledge, implement knowledge, act upon it and spread it amongst the people. So, he rectifies himself through this knowledge and rectifies others. If he does not act, knowledge will be a tool of corruption and destruction, and Allaah’s refuge is sought. And because of this, Allaah dispraised the one who does not act upon the knowledge he has acquired and promises him the severest punishment. Allaah said:

O you who believe! Verily, there are many of the (Jewish) rabbis and the (Christian) monks who devour the wealth of mankind in falsehood, and hinder (them) from the Way of Allah (i.e. Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism). And those who hoard up gold and silver [Al-Kanz: the money, the Zakat of which has not been paid], and spend it not in the Way of Allah, -announce unto them a painful torment. [Surah at-Tawbah. Aayah 34]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُونَ

ڪَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُواْ مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُونَ

O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do. [Surah Saff. Aayah 3]

One of the most hateful [deeds] is that one speaks and gives admonition based on knowledge, but he does not act. Allaah said:

Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) to be affected by Allah’s Reminder (this Qur’an), and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before (i.e. Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Suarah Al-Hadeed. Aayah 16]

It is obligated on the Islamic Ummah to avoid the path of these misguided ones amongst the people of the scripture – those who acquired knowledge but did not act, so their hearts became corrupt and the majority of them became rebellious, disobedient. That is because not acting on knowledge leads to hardness of the heart. And when this hardness afflicts the heart, it destroys it and thus neither does the heart accept truth nor act upon knowledge. It leads to concealment of knowledge, acting contrary to knowledge, leads [the person to] follow desires and rejects truth that is a clear as the sun.

This is found in this Ummah, just as the Prophet [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] said: ‘’The best of the people are those living in my generation, then those who will follow the latter and then those who come after them. Then there will come after them people who will be treacherous and will not be trustworthy, they will bear witness without being asked to do so [Ref 1], and they will vow, but will never fulfil their vows, and fatness will appear among them.’’ [Ref 2].

They give false testimony, act treacherously and deceitfully. They behave a very sinful manner and follow evil desires, except those whom Allaah safeguards amongst the Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. the aided group of Muslims upon the straight path] – those whom Allaah’s Messenger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] praised. Therefore, it is obligated on us to acquire knowledge for the sake of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] and act upon it. Ignorance is a deadly disease and knowledge is a weapon that will destroy you if you do not act upon it, and Allaah’s refuge is sought. [Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm pages 268-270]

[Ref 1: Regarding the statement, ‘’They will bear witness without being asked to do so.’’ This can mean that they bear witness before being asked, or they bear witness based on falsehood, or they give witness without being from those who are worthy of it. (For further details see Sharh Saheeh Muslim 12/17)]. However, there is another Hadeeth in which the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] stated: ‘’Should I not inform you about the best of witnesses, they are those who bear witness before being asked.’’ The scholars say that what is intended by this hadeeth is for example: someone has a witness to give on behalf of another person based on truth, but the person does not know about it, so he [i.e. the one who should give the witness] informs the person about it; or for example, a person has already passed away and another person knows what the deceased person has left behind as inheritance, so he bears witness to that and makes it known. [For further details see Fat-hul Baari 5/260]

[Ref 2: And regarding the statement, ‘’And fatness will appear among them.’’ – Meaning: These people give importance to the means of fattening themselves – food, drink and over-abundance. So, their only concern is their bodies and fattening themselves. As for being fat without choice, then one cannot be blamed for that, just as a person cannot be blamed for being tall, short, black or white…[For further details, see Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 10/1056 -By Shaikh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)]

[77] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [One of The Signs of The Path Towards Failure]: O Allaah! Do Not Abandon Us To Ourselves In The Twinkling of An Eye (Aameen)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

It is with great regret that many people fall into Bidah Aqaa’idiyyah and Manhajiyyah [i.e. innovations related to beliefs and methodology], bidah related to acts of worship and other than that. Then he [i.e. the person upon such a path] is notified, but does not take notice; advised but does not accept advice. This is [tantamount to] being forsaken [by Allaah]! And from the signs that [one is following the path to happiness in this Dunyah and Aakhirah] is that he is eager to [follow] the truth, searches for it and rejoices when he is notified of his error, [saying], “May Allaah have mercy upon the person who shows me my faults” – the person who shows you your mistake, clarifies your mistake for you and that you are following the path of misguidance, that you are following other than the methodology [ordained] by Allaah and [a path other than] the Siraat Al-Mustaqeem.

Returning to the Truth is Righteousness and Continuing upon an Error is Despicable – Shaykh Rabī

Shaykh Rabī (hafidahullāh) said,

“Many people when they commit an error, or go beyond bounds (ghulū) or commit something (which is dis-praiseworthy), then (in most cases) they do not return (to the truth), and refuge is sought with Allāh.”

Al-Wasāya Al-Manhajīya pg 18 (Ath-Thabāt ala As-Sunnah)

[76] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ -[Every Hadeeth We Narrate Requires Sincere Intentions]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Sulaymaan Ibn Daawud Al-Abbaasiy [rahimahullaah] was a pious scholar and [Imaam] Ahmad [rahimahullaah] used to say about him, “He is fit for the khilaafah.” He [i.e. Sulaymaan] said, “It maybe that I narrate a single hadeeth with a sincere intention, but when I reach some of its [wording], my intention changes. Therefore, [narrating] a single hadeeth requires [sincere] intentions.”

Shaikh Rabee then said: That is because shaytaan interferes. You speak about a hadeeth and transmit it to another person, then shaytaan interferes and corrupts your intention [by] way of Riyaa and a desire to be heard, so that it is said, “Such and such is a scholar, such and such is a haafidh.” Therefore, every hadeeth [you narrate] requires a [sincere] intention. You must always [earnestly pay attention] to [sincere] intention, so that your deed is [carried out] for the sake of Allaah.

The Main Goal Behind Warning Against Error – [By Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadee]

Shaikh Bin Haadee[hafidhahullaah] said: When you refute a person, it is obligated on you to adhere to truth, honesty & sincerity, so your intention should be to clarify the truth & warn against the error that is in opposition to the truth. If this is your intention, it is a noble intention [or goal] and a great affair, [for which] all the Ummah should thank you and it is not permissible for anyone to accuse you of evil. If you harbour evil goals and – by way of examinination and study – it becomes manifest that you are a person of desires, the people have the right to speak about you.

[75] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Why Are The Scholars Beneficial to Everyone -Humankind, Animals etc]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

And indeed everyone [i.e. in the heavens and on earth], and even the fish in the sea seek forgiveness for the scholar, because he benefits the people. Even the fish in the sea benefits from him; he clarifies [and distinguishes] between the halaal animals [that can be eaten] and [that which is] haraam, the manner to utilise a riding beast and how to deal with this animal [i.e. not to oppress or overburden it], and how to slaughter an animal properly [i.e. in conformity with the Sharee’aha]. So, love is placed in the souls of everyone – in the heavens and the earth – who is beloved to Allaah, so they seek forgiveness for the scholar.

You are a Miskeen [i.e. one in complete need of Allaah, weak, deficient etc] and Allaah [favoured] you with these hosts [i.e. the righteous inhabitants of the heavens and the earth] who supplicate for you and seek forgiveness for you, and the angels humble themselves to you. So, after knowing this, you should increase in humility, love of Allaah and eagerness for knowledge.
