Self-scrutiny: An Ingrate Exchanges The Blessings of His Lord With Kufr (disbelief) and Shirk (polytheism) – [A Brief Admonition By Imaam As-Sadi (rahimahullaah)] [PDF 2 Pages]
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
Allaah [The Most High] said:
And when some hurt touches man, he cries to his Lord [Allah Alone], turning to Him in repentance, but when He bestows a favour upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he cried for before, and he sets up rivals to Allah, in order to mislead others from His Path. Say: ‘’Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire!’’ [Surah Az-Zumar. Aayah 8]
Allaah [The Most High] informed [us] of His kindness, good treatment and generosity to a slave of His and the little thanks [shown by this slave in return]; and that when harm touches this slave of His, such as illness, poverty or he encounters distress at sea [i.e. due to storms, danger of downing etc], or other than that, he [i.e. the person] knows that none can save him in this situation except Allaah. So, he invokes Allaah with humility, turns to Allaah in repentance [with firm faith and obedience], seeks rescue from Allaah to remove what has afflicted him and persists in this [request].
[ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلَهُ ۥ نِعۡمَةً۬ مِّنۡهُ – but when He (Allaah) bestows a favour upon him from Himself] – Meaning: When Allaah removes the harm and extreme hardship he found himself in, [نَسِىَ مَا كَانَ يَدۡعُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ مِن قَبۡلُ – he forgets that for which he cried for before]- Meaning: He forgets the harm that led him to invoke Allaah [for help], carries on as if nothing afflicted him and persists in associating partners with Allaah; [وَجَعَلَ لِلَّهِ أَندَادً۬ا لِّيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ – and he sets up rivals to Allah, in order to mislead others from His Path]- Meaning: Misguide himself and others.
[قُلۡ – Say]-Meaning: Say (O Muhammad) to this insolent (or arrogant one) who has exchanged the blessings of Allaah with disbelief, [تَمَتَّعۡ بِكُفۡرِكَ قَلِيلاًۖ إِنَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ – Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire!]- Meaning: Your enjoyment will not benefit you when your final destination will be the fire of hell. [Allaah also said in Surah Ash-Shu’araa’ Aayaat 205-207]:
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِينَ
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡہُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُمَتَّعُونَ
Tell Me, if We do let them enjoy for years, and afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised! All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them.
