Allaah [The Most High] said:

And when We bestow Our Grace on the human being, he turns away and becomes arrogant, far away from the Right Path. And when evil touches him he is in great despair.  Say [O Muhammad to mankind]: ‘’Each one does according to Shaakilatihee, and your Lord knows best of him whose path is right.’’ [Surah Al-Israa. Aayaat 83-84]

[وَإِذَآ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ  – And when We bestow Our Grace on the human being]:

Imaam Ibnul Jawzi [rahimahullaah] said that Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said: The One intended in this Aayah is a disbeliever and Al-Waleed Ibn Al-Mugheerah, and the scholars of Tafseer say that this bestowal [of grace] is related to abundant provision and removal of calamity. [أَعۡرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِۦ‌ۖ he turns away and becomes arrogant]– Meaning: He distances himself from fulfilling the obligations that are [tied to] those blessings. It is also said that it means [that he becomes afflicted with] self-exaltedness and haughtiness. [وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ And when evil touches him]– Meaning: When afflicted by calamity and poverty, [كَانَ يَـُٔوسً۬ا –  he is in great despair] – Meaning: He despairs and does not hope for Allaah’s bounties. [Ref 1]

As for the one whom Allaah has guided, then indeed he humbles himself to his Lord when blessings are bestowed on him and is grateful to Allaah for such blessings. And when [he finds himself in a state] of hardship, he humbles himself, hopes that Allaah will grant him wellbeing and remove that which he finds himself in, and because of this the calamity becomes lighter [or less severe] upon him. [Ref 2]

[قُلۡ ڪُلٌّ۬ يَعۡمَلُ عَلَىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِۦ Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘’Each one does according to Shaakilatihee’’]:

Ibn Zayd [rahimahullaah] said that this means: Everyone acts based on the path that agrees with his manners, so the disbeliever acts based on that which resembles his path, such as turning away from [his Lord] when granted blessings and despairing when in a state of hardship; and the believer acts upon that which resembles his path, such as being thankful when in a state of ease and exercises patience in times of calamity. [Ref 3]

[فَرَبُّكُمۡ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنۡ هُوَ أَهۡدَىٰ سَبِيلا and your Lord knows best of him whose path is right] – Meaning: He [i.e. your Lord] knows the one who is worthy of being guided, so He guides him. And [He knows] the one who is not worthy of guidance [i.e. due to his own evil deeds, obstinacy, disbelief, enmity towards his Lord and does not wish to be guided], so He [Allaah] forsakes him and does not guide him. [Ref 4]
