In The Name Of Allaah The Most Merciful The Bestower Of Mercy.
Al-Allaamah Haafidh Al-Hakami [rahimahullaah] advised the student of knowledge saying: “And self-amazement, be warned against it. Indeed, self-amazement shovels away the deeds of the amazed one in its violent torrent”.
Shaikh Abdur-Razzaaq Al-Badr [hafidhahullaah] commented on the above statement of Allaamah Haafidh Al-Hakami [rahimahullaah], saying: He likened Self-amazement to the violent torrent that destroys everything in front of it. When a person is afflicted with the disease of self-amazement, all his righteous deeds are shovelled away and nothing remains of it. Al-Haafidh Al-Mundhiree reported in his book At-Targheeb Wat-Tarheeb under the chapter Tarheeb Min Ad-Dawee Fil Ilmi Wal Qur’aan that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “A people will appear who will recite the Qur’an and say, ‘Who recites (better) than us? Who knows more than us? Who has more understanding than us?’ Then the Prophet [sallal-laahu alayhi-wasallam] said to his companions, ‘Is there any good from these people?’ They said, ‘Allaah and His Messenger know best’. The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, ‘These ones are from you, from this Ummah, and they are fuel for the fire’”. [Imaam Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) Declared this hadeeth Hasan Li-Ghayrihee in Saheeh At-Targheeb Wat-Tarheeb: Number: 135]
Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr then said, “When self-amazement afflicts the student of knowledge, it drags him towards pride – exalting himself above the people, raising himself above the slaves of Allaah and exaltedness in the earth. And it has been reported in a hadeeth from the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] who said: ‘’The one who has an atom’s weight of pride in his heart will not enter Jannah’’. [Ref 1]
Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said:
Pride [ or haughtiness] is one of the obstacles in the path of seeking knowledge, and Allaah’s Refuge is sought. The Salaf – as stated by Mujaahid – said: “Neither the proud person nor the shy person will acquire knowledge.” Pride is a destructive disease – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought. An atom’s weight of pride can cast a person in the hell fire. A person should not be inattentive to [the dangerous consequences] of pride – regardless whether [one behaves in such a manner] towards the common people or the scholars, [whilst] in the path of seeking knowledge or other than that. This is a dangerous disease. [Ref 2]
Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said:
If the [desire for pride or haughtiness] comes to him, whilst he in the path of [seeking knowledge or engaged in an affair related] to knowledge, then it is obligated on him to place his nafs under the feet [i.e. humble himself]. It is obligatory to humble this arrogant haughty nafs whilst one is in the path of seeking knowledge. Allaah hates the haughty people. [Allaah (The Most High) said]: [ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ – Truly, He (Allaah) likes not the proud] [Surah An-Nahl’ Aayah 23] [Ref 3]
That home of the Hereafter [i.e. Paradise], We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqoon [pious]. [Surah Al-Qasas’Aayah 83]
The home of the Hereafter is prepared for those who are humble for the sake of Allaah, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will raise him. [As for the haughty people], Allaah hates them and their destination is the fire – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought. Major Kufr and Bidah stops a person from [receiving] the delight [found in the] truth and the guidance brought by the Prophets, and that which purifies the souls [i.e. makes the souls upright]. How many people have been deprived of seeking knowledge due to haughtiness– this extremely despicable traite! [He says], “How can I seek knowledge from such and such person and he is not a scholar, and he is a Jaahil?” [He says that the] scholars are ignoramuses and thinks that he is a scholar, even though he is an ignoramus, for indeed whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus, just as Ibn Mas’ood said, “Whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus.” [Ref 4]
