In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Uthmaan Bin Saaleh and Ahmad Bin Saeed Ad-daarimee [rahimahumallaah] said: “Uthmaan narrated to us saying, ‘A man came to [Imaam] Maalik [rahimahullaah] and asked him about an affair of the religion, so he said to him, ‘The Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said such and such’. So the man said, ‘What is your view?’ [Imaam] Maalik said to him, And let those who oppose the Messenger’s [Muhammad] commandment [i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects)] beware; lest some Fitnah [disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.] befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them’”. [Ref 1]

Ibn Wahb [rahimahullaah] narrated that he heard Maalik [rahimahullaah] saying, “When a man praises himself, his magnificence leaves him”. [Ref 2]

Ibn Wahb [rahimahullaah] narrated from Maalik [rahimahullaah] who said, “It has reached me that no one abstains from the unnecessary pleasures of this world and is fearful of Allaah, except that he’ll speak with wisdom”. [Ref3]

Imaam Maalik [rahimahullaah] said: Indeed this knowledge is religion, so look to the one you take your religion from.  Indeed I met seventy amongst those who [narrated] saying, “The messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said”, [but] I did not take anything from them.  And if one of them was to be put in charge of the public treasury, they would have been found trustworthy, but they were not from the people of this affair [i.e. from the experts in the field of the science of hadeeth].
