Nafs Must Be Disciplined: [A Manifest Distinction Between The One Who is Grateful at all Times and The Ungrateful One!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Allaah [The Most High] said:[وَإِذَا مَسَّ الْإِنسَانَ الضُّرُّ دَعَانَا لِجَنبِهِ أَوْ قَاعِدًا أَوْ قَائِمًا فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُ ضُرَّهُ مَرَّ كَأَن لَّمْ يَدْعُنَا إِلَىٰ ضُرٍّ مَّسَّهُ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ – And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying down on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on his way as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him! Thus it seems fair to the Musrifoon [transgressors] that which they used to do. [Soorah Yoonus. Ayah:12]
Imaam Ash-Shanqeeti [rahimahullaah] said: He [i.e. Allaah (The Exalted)] mentioned in this noble Aayah that indeed in times of distress, the human being humbles himself to his Lord in supplication-in all his circumstances; but when Allaah relieves him from his distress, he turns away from the remembrance of his Lord and forgets the [situation] he was in, as if he was never in it. This [behaviour] has been clarified in another place [in the Qur’aan], such as the saying of Allaah:
وَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ضُرٌّ۬ دَعَا رَبَّهُ ۥ مُنِيبًا إِلَيۡهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلَهُ ۥ نِعۡمَةً۬ مِّنۡهُ نَسِىَ مَا كَانَ يَدۡعُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ مِن قَبۡلُ
And when some hurt touches man, he cries to his Lord (Allah Alone), turning to Him in repentance, but when He bestows a favour upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he cried for before.’’ [Soorah Az-Zumar: Ayah 8]
And the saying of Allaah:[فَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ضُرٌّ۬ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلۡنَـٰهُ نِعۡمَةً۬ مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭۚ – ‘’When harm touches man, he calls to Us (for help), then when We have (rescued him from that harm and) changed it into a favour from Us, he says: “Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it]. [Soorah Az-Zumar: Ayah 49]
And the saying of Allaah: [وَإِذَآ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِۦ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَذُو دُعَآءٍ عَرِيضٍ۬ – ‘’And when We show favour to man, he withdraws and turns away, but when evil touches him, then he has recourse to long supplications.’’ [Soorah Fussilat: Ayah 51]
And indeed Allaah excluded His believing slaves from these dispraised characteristics in His statement:
‘’But if We let him taste good (favour) after evil (poverty and harm) has touched him, he is sure to say: ‘’Ills have departed from me.’’ Surely, he is exultant, and boastful (ungrateful to Allah). Except those who show patience and do righteous good deeds, those: theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise).’’ [Soorah Hud: Aayaat 10-11]
And indeed the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affair is good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good comes to him, he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him, he is patient and that is good for him. And that is for none else except the believer.’’ [Saheeh Muslim: 2999] [An Excerpt from ‘Mukhtasar Tafseerul Qur’aan Bil-Qur’aan Min Adwaa Al-Bayaan. Pages 226-227. slightly paraphrased]
