[1.1] Excerpts From Talbees Iblees [The Devil’s Deception] By Imaam Ibnul Jawzi: Introduction

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Jawzi [rahimahullaah] said:

All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, who placed the scale of justice in the hands of the Dhawil Albaab [those granted sound  wisdom, sound knowledge, righteous deeds, possessors of knowledge related to the underlying wisdom of the divine law and its rulings(1)], and He sent the Messengers as bearers of good news of reward as well as warning against punishment. He revealed the books to them to clarify right and wrong, and perfected the laws- neither  deficiency nor fault in them.

I praise Him [Allaah] with the praise of one who knows that He [Allaah] is the One who sets up the causes [i.e. based on His perfect Justice, Wisdom and Knowledge], and I bear witness to His Oneness with a sincere testimony without any doubt. And I bear witness that indeed Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and He sent him when disbelief dispelled Eemaan, so he nullified the darkness with the light of guidance and removed the barrier, explained to the people that which was revealed to them, made clear that which was difficult to understand of the book and left them upon a white plain that had no fissures nor illusions. And may Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him, all his family, all his companions and all those who follow them exactly in faith until the Day of Gathering and Recompense. To proceed:

Indeed, the greatest blessing bestowed on the human being is the intellect, for indeed it is a tool by way of which The True Deity Who Alone Has The Right to be Worshipped is known [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections], and the means to belief in the Messengers; but when it is the fact that the intellect is not enough to undertake everything that is desired from a  servant of Allaah, then Messengers were sent and books revealed. The similitude of the divine law is that of the sun and the similitude of the intellect is that of the eye; so if the eye is healthy and opens, it sees the sun. And when the intellect affirmed the truthful statements of the Prophets, which were established by way of [unmatched] miracles, it made them submit and they firmly relied on the Prophets in that which was hidden from them [i.e. affairs of the unseen revealed by Allaah to the Prophets and Messengers].

As Allaah conferred sound intellect to humankind, He appointed their father Aadam as a Prophet. He used to teach them Allaah’s revelation and they were upon guidance until Qaabeel followed his evil desire by killing his brother; then desires of the people diverged and thus shifted them into the wilderness of misguidance until they worshipped idols, differed in their beliefs and deeds, opposed the Messengers and their own sound intellects, followed their evil desires, inclined towards their bad habits, blindly followed their elders and thus what Iblees thought about them became true, and they followed him except a group amongst the believers.
