A Brief Rebuttal Against Jason Burke – A Journalist Based In Johannesburg- And Associate For Attaching The Term ‘Ideologue’ to the Word ‘Islaam’

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَلَا تَقۡفُ مَا لَيۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌ‌ۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡبَصَرَ وَٱلۡفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ كَانَ عَنۡهُ مَسۡـُٔولاً۬

And follow not that of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allah). [Surah Al-Israa. Aayah 36]

In an article written by Jason Burke and Zeinab Muhammad [Tuesday July 21st ], a mention was made regarding Hasan at-Turaabi, as follows:

First and foremost, we have all witnessed the evil of rebellion. Read articles on the following links:

Secondly, in the above quote, Jason and associate referred to Hasan At-Turaabi – the Ikhwaani deviant – as an ‘Islamist Ideologue’. Indeed, we have already reprimanded Jason Burke for utilising terms that defiles the word ‘Islaam’. Refer to link: https://salaficentre.com/2020/07/1-a-brief-rebuttal-against-jason-burke-a-journalist-based-in-johannesburg-for-defiling-the-word-islamic-by-attaching-the-words-militant-and-radical-to-it-whilst-repo/

Thirdly, what is an ideologue? It is an often blindly partisan advocate or adherent of a particular IDEOLOGYan adherent of an IDEOLOGY, especially one who is uncompromising and dogmatic….a person who believes very strongly in particular principles and tries to follow them carefully… someone who behaves very strictly according to an IDEOLOGY, and never doubts that it is right etc

So, if an IDEOLOGUE is an adherent of a particular IDEOLOGY, in addition to the other descriptions given to such a person, such as ‘blindly partisan advocate’, ‘uncompromising’ etc, then every rightly guided adherent to the Sunnah knows that such a term cannot be attributed to the word ‘Islaam’, because neither is Islaam an ideology nor would it be appropriate to describe a person as one who is a ‘blindly partisan advocate’, or labelling him with the word ‘uncompromising’ in a negative way if he is a follower of the authentic Sunnah and the path of the Sahaabah. Therefore, it would have been appropriate if Jason and Zeinab described the deviant Hasan At-Turaabi as an ideologue without attaching Islaam to such a description, because the man innovated and deviated, and all of that is not from Islaam, rather his methodology was UN-ISLAMIC.

However, it is very clear to everyone that Jason Burke in particular is one submerged in the deep oceans of ignorance in this subject matter, because he insists and continues attaching these terms to the word Islaam. We stated in previous articles and state once again, “O Jason! The scholars of Islaam say, ‘Silence beautifies the scholar and conceals the affair [i.e. ignorance] of the ignorant one’”, and likewise we advise Zeinab Muhammad to restrain her tongue from falsehood. The scholars of Islaam taught us sound principles regarding the usage of words and terms, as they have stated as follows: “The basis of a person’s Islaam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi- wasallam] is the Messenger of Allaah, to believe in Allaah, declare that Allaah is One without partner, obey Allaah’s commands, keep away from what Allaah has forbidden and single out Allaah in worship. And safeguarding this path [necessitates] the prohibition of every expression [term or word] that contains Shirk Billaah [i.e. ascribing partners to Allaah] or Kufr, or will lead to one of the two. [Ref 1]  In the Qur’aan, there are many words that are utilised to rebut the words [or terms] that are in opposition to the call of the Messengers, the revelation that was revealed to them and the truth they brought. [Ref 2] One of the general fundamental principles [in Islaam] is to know that words [or terms] are two types: Words that are mentioned in the Qur’aan and [authentic] Sunnah, therefore, it is obligated on every believer to affirm them – affirm what Allaah and His Messenger have affirmed, and negate what Allaah and His Messenger have negated. The words [or terms] affirmed by Allaah is truth and the ones Allaah negated are [negated] in truth, for indeed Allaah speaks the truth and guides to the straight path. The words [or terms] of the Sharee’ah are sanctified, and it is from perfection in knowledge that one seeks after the [sound meanings] which the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasalam] intended by them, in order to affirm what he affirmed and negate the meanings he negated; for indeed it is obligated on us to believe and bear witness to everything he has stated and follow him in everything he has commanded. As for the words [or terms] that are neither found in the Qur’am and [authentic] Sunnah, nor did the Salaf hold a consensus regarding whether they are negated or affirmed, then it is not incumbent on anyone to agree with the one who negates them or affirms them until its intended meaning is explained. So, if its intended meaning agrees with the [revelation, commands, prohibitions etc] conveyed by the Messenger, it is affirmed; but if its intended meaning is in opposition to the [revelation, commands, prohibitions etc] conveyed by the Messenger, it is rejected”. [Ref 3]

Fourthly, what is an ideology? It is a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy….a set of beliefs or principles, especially one on which a political system, party, or organization is based…a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy… etc

Therefore, based on this above definition of ideology, which is the basis of an ideologue’s path, we remind these two ill-informed journalists as follows: “Islaam is not a set of ideas [or thoughts], rather it is a divine revelation sent down – by the Lord of universe – in the Magnificent Qur’aan and the [authentic] Sunnah of the noble Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], the Messenger who never speaks based on his desires; rather [إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡىٌ۬ يُوحَىٰ  – It (i.e. the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah conveyed by the Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam) is nothing else but a revelation that is inspired]. As for an idea [or thought], it can be [rejected, disapproved etc] and debated [or presented for discussion], and it may be correct or incorrect. Therefore, it is not permissible to associate Islam with the term ‘Idea [or thought] because it [idea or thought] is something specifically attributed to the creation [i.e. humankind and Jinn], because it can either be correct or  wrong. As for the Sharee’ah [i.e. the sound divine law that judges on all affairs of life as conveyed by the infallible seal of the Prophets Muhammad (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam) in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah], it is infallible. Likewise, it is not to be said, “Islamic idea [or thought], because the scholar who has reached the level of Ijtihaad is restricted by the pure Sharee’ah, so he is not allowed to contemplate [outside the confines of the sound divine revelation] and then legislate; rather he searches and follows the legislated Islamic path of [sound] Ijtihaad in order to derive rulings”. [Ref 4]

Jason and associate must therefore understand that the Sharee’ah and Islaam are free from the terms IDEOLOGUE and IDEOLOGY.  The Sharee’ah and Islaam are infallible – a revelation from the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who will question them regarding that which their tongues falsely attribute to the religion ordained by their Creator, as Allaah [The Exalted] stated:

Aayah 36]

The beliefs of the IDEOLOGUES are concocted and innovated, whereas the sound beliefs in Islaam are ordained by the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [may Allaah preserve him] said: Beliefs ae two types – beliefs  ordained by Allaah and the beliefs initiated by the people. Sound belief can only be from Allaah’s Wahi [the revelation sent down by Allaah in the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah]. Allaah [The Most High] informed us about Yoosuf [alayhis-salaam] that he said to his companions in the prison:

O two companions of the prison! Are many different lords (gods) better or Allah, the One, the Irresistible? You do not worship besides Him but only names which you have named (forged), you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him (i.e. His Monotheism), that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not. [Soorah Yoosuf: Ayah: 39-40]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-‘Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs) And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? Is it for you the males and for Him the females? That indeed is a division most unfair! They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. [Soorah Najm: 19-23]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَنْ بِهِ اللَّهُ

Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed. [Soorah Ash-Shoorah: Ayah:21]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruhan (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism). [Soorah Ash-shoorah: ayah:52-53]

All these Aayaat demonstrate the fact that the sound Islamic creed can only be derived from the revelation [i.e. the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah].

Therefore, these ill-informed journalists – Jason and Zeinab- should refrain from attaching the word ideologue to the word Islaam. Likewise, when this word ‘Islamist’ is used by some of the journalists, they are often referring to those engaged in political activism- those who are well-known to us as people upon the Un-Islamic methodology and innovation of political activism – such as the Ikhwaanees, Takfeeris and their ilk, therefore ascribing their deeds to Islaam is a distortion and defilement of the word Islaam. See here regarding Ikhwaanees and their ilk:

As for Hasan At-Turaabi, there is no need to elaborate on his affair because he was a well-known Ikhwaani deviant and a philosopher – refuted by the upright Ulamaa, both Al-Allaamah Muhammad Amaan al-Jaami and Al-Allaamah Muqbil Bin Haadee Al-Waadi’ee [rahimahumallaah]. See here: https://safeyoutube.net/w/qYtO

Also in the same article written by Jason and Zeinab, the practice of FGM and Takfeer were mentioned, but with no explanation. We have already dealt with these two affairs here: A Brief Rebuttal Against Jason Burke – A Journalist Based In Johannesburg- For Defiling The Word ‘Islam’ By Attaching The Word ‘Hardline’ to It, Whilst Reporting About FGM [Female Genital Mutilation]: https://salaficentre.com/2020/07/2-a-brief-rebuttal-against-jason-burke-a-journalist-based-in-johannesburg-for-defiling-the-word-islam-by-attaching-the-word-hardline-to-it-whilst-repo/

Finally, we remind both Jason and Zeinab to abandon conjecture, for indeed it was conjecture that led them to attach the word ideologue to the word Islaam. Allaah [The Exalted] said: [إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُ‌ۖ  – They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire]. There is a tremendous benefit derived from this, because the one deprived of sound Eemaan and the sound creed sent down as revelation by Allaah- The Lord of the Aalameen, then his affair is one of two: Corruption in Knowledge or Corruption in his Intent– corruption in knowledge occurs as a result of following conjecture and corruption in one’s intent occurs as a result of following desires, or the person may combine both of them. Another benefit derived from this is that the rectification or well-being of a person cannot be attained except by way of two affairs: Upright [or sound] Knowledge and Upright [or sound] Intent. This is why Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said in Miftaah Daarus Sa’aadah that a person is in need of two things: ‘[Sound] Knowledge by way of which he is [rightly] guided and lofty aspiration by way of which he is urged towards that [sound aspiration]’, because it maybe that a person has beneficial knowledge but not [sound] intent and aspiration.  Therefore, one cannot be upright except by way of upright knowledge and intent.  Sound knowledge is corrupted through following conjecture and sound intent is corrupted through following the desires of one’s soul. [Ref 5]

May Allaah guide Jason and Zeinab to that which is correct Aameen.
