[4] Excerpts From Tafseer of Surah An-Nahl – Referred to As ‘Surah An-Ni’am’ By Some of The Scholars [Aayah 14]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَأۡڪُلُواْ مِنۡهُ لَحۡمً۬ا طَرِيًّ۬ا وَتَسۡتَخۡرِجُواْ مِنۡهُ حِلۡيَةً۬ تَلۡبَسُونَهَا وَتَرَى ٱلۡفُلۡكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِيهِ وَلِتَبۡتَغُواْ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّڪُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ  – nd He it is Who has subjected the sea (to you), that you eat thereof fresh tender meat, and that you bring forth out of it ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing through it, that you may seek (thus) of His Bounty and that you may be grateful]. [Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 14]

Meaning: He alone – and He has no partner- [ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ – is He Who has subjugated the sea to you], Meaning, for your various beneficial needs; [لِتَأۡڪُلُواْ مِنۡهُ لَحۡمً۬ا طَرِيًّ۬ا – that you eat thereof fresh tender meat]- Meaning, fish and marine animals that are captured from the sea. [وَتَسۡتَخۡرِجُواْ مِنۡهُ حِلۡيَةً۬ تَلۡبَسُونَهَا – and that you bring forth out of it (i.e. the sea) ornaments to wear]- Meaning, increasing beauty to your beauty.

[وَتَرَى ٱلۡفُلۡكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِيهِ وَلِتَبۡتَغُواْ مِن فَضۡلِهِ – And you see the ships ploughing through it, that you may seek (thus) of His Bounty]- Meaning, sailing through the gigantic waves with their bows when departing from one region and reaching the other, whilst carrying travellers, provisions, goods and merchandise through which people seek a livelihood and the blessings which Allaah has bestowed on them.

[وَلَعَلَّڪُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ  – and that you may be grateful]- Meaning, He is the One Who facilitated these things for you and made them available, so that you may praise Him- The One who bestowed them on you. So, to Allaah belongs all praise that should be accompanied with love, and to him belongs all thanks and exaltation, because He gave the servants that which is for their well-being and benefit above what they seek and wish; and He gave you everything that is related to what you hope for [to sustain life] and your needs, whether you ask Him by way of supplication or He has made it readily available due to the fact that you [humans] are in need of it, such as livestock, facilitated you with the sources and the know how to acquire tools, engage in crafts, make things and provide services by way of the different professions, and other than that. We cannot thank Allaah the way He truly deserves, rather He is as He as praised Himself. [An Except from Tafseer As-Sadi. Slightly paraphrased]
