In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Allaah [The Exalted] said:
Do they await but that the angels should come to them, or there should come the command of your Lord? Thus did those before them. And Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves. Then, the evil of that which they did overtook them, and that at which they used to mock surrounded them. [Surah An-Nahl. Aayaat 33-34]
Meaning: Do these people – to whom the signs have appeared but they have not believed and they have been reminded but have failed to remember and take heed- await until the angels take away their souls, or Allaah sends them a punishment that is justified and they are definitely deserving of it? [كَذَٲلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ – Thus did those before them]- Meaning, they belied and disbelieved until punishment descended on them.
[وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِن ڪَانُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُمۡ يَظۡلِمُونَ – And Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves]- Meaning, they were not wronged when punishment came, but they wronged themselves because they were created to worship Allaah alone, so that their final abode would be to receive Allaah’s Generosity, but they approached that with wrong doing, abandoned the purpose for which they were created and replaced it with permanent disgrace and wretchedness.
[فَأَصَابَهُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُواْ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَہۡزِءُون – Then, the evil of that which they did overtook them, and that at which they used to mock surrounded them]- Meaning, punishment came to them due to their deeds and its evil consequences, for indeed when their Messengers used to inform them about punishment, they used to mock at such punishment and that which they were informed, so the affair they used to mock at became justify against them.
