In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Ed Husain – The Maftoon (captivated in trial of misguidance)- announces his misguidance, saying:
Indeed, brothers and sisters, Glorified be Allaah and free is He from all imperfections! We ask Allaah to keep our hearts firm upon this blessed Salafi Methodology. Indeed, the one who was informed about an affair is not same as the one who witnessed it. We have lived to see this man abandoning one type of extreme misguidance and hastening towards another type of extreme misguidance – from the methodology of the Khaarijites to the methodology of the heretical philosophers.
Firstly, he calls himself a think tanker and an Averroist! Therefore, we remind – as follows – about the limits of his intellect and what his Lord has commanded him in that regard. Allaah [The Most High] said:
O you who believe! Do not put (yourselves) forward before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Verily! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayaat 1-2]
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:
When it is the case that Allaah forbade [us] from giving precedence to [ourselves] over the Messenger, then which type of giving precedence to oneself over the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] can be more severe than giving precedence to one’s intellect over the revelation he was sent with? Many of the Salaf stated [that this ayah means]: ‘’Do not say anything [about the religion] until the Messenger speaks and do not act until he commands you.’’
The most disobedient person amongst the people and the worst with regards to giving precedence to himself [or herself] over the Messenger is that one who gives precedence to his [or her] intellect or the intellect of another person over the revelation the Messenger was sent with. And when it is the case that Allaah has indeed forbidden them from raising their voices above the voice of the Messenger, then how about raising their intellects above the statements of the Messenger and the revelation he came with? [Ref 1]
Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [rahimahullaah]) said:
In this great Soorah there are lofty benefits and rulings. The Muslims are greatly in need of understanding (it), being conscious of it and take benefit from it. In the first part, there is a warning against putting oneself forward before Allaah and His Messenger. And that which is obligated on the People of Eemaan is that they are to be followers and not innovators, and that they do not put themselves forward before Allaah and His Messenger.
The people of knowledge say (that this ayah means): “Do not speak until you are commanded by Allaah and His Messenger, and do not act until the Messenger acts and legislates; do not put (yourselves) forward before him with either speech or action, (but) be you followers of that which has been prescribed for you and that which has been made clear for you in the (Islamic) legislation. This is the way the people of Eemaan are to be -they do not innovate acts of worship and rulings in Allaah’s Sharee’ah.
[وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيم – And fear Allah. Verily! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing]
Allaah hears their statements and nothing is hidden from Him with regards to your state of affairs. He hears the statements of the slaves and He knows their state of affairs. He knows the truth you utter and other than it. He knows what you do, the truth you utter and other than it. The meaning of (this is that): Be mindful of Him and be warned about (disobeying Him) because nothing is hidden from Him. He hears and He knows your state of affairs. Therefore, it is obligated on you to be followers, and not innovators in Allaah’s Sharee’ah. [Ref 2]
Question to Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz:
Shaikh, are the ones who depend on their intellects in understanding many of the affairs of the religion considered to be from those who are mistaken?
Yes; it is obligated on him not to depend on his intellect, rather he studies the texts and relies on the divine texts from the speech of Allaah and that of Allaah’s Messenger [salllal laahu alayhiwa wasallam], because there is guidance in it and direction towards good. As for the intellect, it can be right or wrong. The sects that oppose Ahlus sunnah were destroyed due to their intellects. They thought that they had good intellects and that their intellects arrived at what is correct and thus they opposed the texts by way of their stagnant intellects which they thought were sound. What was that which made the Jahmiyyah negate the Perfect Names and Attributes of Allaah, except due to their corrupt intellects?!
What was it that led the Mutazilah to negate the attributes of Allaah and declared that the sinners [i.e. those who die whilst committing the major sins that are lesser that major kufr and major shirk] will remain in the fire forever, except due to their corrupt intellects?! Likewise, is the case of their followers who utter this same speech.
What led the Khawaarij to excommunicate the people due to committing sins – that the sinner is a disbeliever and that he will remain in the fire forever, except due to their corrupt intellects. Likewise. this is the case regarding other than them amongst the proponents of Bidah. The intellects which they depend upon is that which destroy them, because they think that their intellects are safe, sound, good and infallible, whereas that is not the case; rather it is not infallible – commits mistakes a lot; however they hold a good suspicion regarding their intellects and an evil suspicion regarding the texts and thus they are destroyed.
It is obligatory to harbour a good suspicion regarding the texts and an evil suspicion regarding the intellect, and to submit the intellects to the texts. The texts are infallible if their chain of transmission are established to be authentic. As for the intellects, they are fallible. A person susceptible to mistakes, shortcoming and desires. As for the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], what he conveyed from Allaah is infallible. and likewise the Qur’aan is infallible- the speech of Allaah. Therefore, it is obligatory that the Qur’aan and Sunnah passes a judgement on your intellect and that you give precedence to the Qur’aan and Sunnah over your intellect- over the intellect of the Shaikh, the Mashaayikh, your forefathers, ancestors and all the people. The texts are given precedence over all the intellects. [Ref 3]
Everyone with a bit of [uncorrupted] intellect knows that indeed the corruption of the world and its ruin occurs due to giving precedence to opinion over the divine revelation and [evil] desires over sound intellect. These two corrupt motives [or basis] are neither entrenched in a heart, except that its destruction becomes inevitable nor in a nation, except that its affairs are completely corrupted. [Ref 4]
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:
It has been stated that the reason behind Iblees being distanced [from the mercy of Allaah] is because of false interpretation, for indeed he made an analogy with the text and gave precedence to the analogy over the text. He made a false interpretation about himself and that [his so called] rational analogy takes precedence over the command to prostrate. [Allaah informed us that Iblees said]: [أنا خير منه – I am better than him [i.e. Aadam], and that a virtuous one cannot humble himself to one who has been given virtue over him; therefore he quickly said [as Allaah informed us that Iblees said]: [خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طين – You created me from fire, and him you created from clay].
Therefore, he thought that this rational analogy that resembles truth- even though it is false – will benefit him in his false interpretation. So, that which happened him happened and he became the leader of everyone- until the day of judgement- who makes a false interpretation of the texts of the revelation. How many a person in this world are followers of this cursed leader! And if you contemplate on the majority of those doubts that are made to resemble the truth by the false interpreters of the texts and seeking to nullify them, you will find that it is similar to the doubts of Iblees which he seeks to portray as truth.
So, a person says: If the intellect and the text oppose each other, then give precedence to the intellect. This is where this principle is derived from and he [i.e. the proponent of this affair] use it as a fundamental principle through which he rejects those texts of the revelation which he claims are in opposition to the intellect, just as his leader Iblees claimed that a [so called] rational proof opposed the command to make sujood. This doubt came to him due to pride which prevented him from submitting to the clear texts of the revelation. Likewise, you find every false disputer against the texts of the revelation does so due to pride. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ ۙ إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَالِغِيهِ ۚ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ
Verily, those who dispute about the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride [to accept you (Muhammad ) as a Messenger of Allah and to obey you]. They will never have it (i.e. Prophethood which Allah has bestowed upon you). So seek refuge in Allah (O Muhammad from the arrogants). Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 56] [Ref 5]
Shaikh Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said:
And even though there is something in the paths of analogical reasoning and reflection that will lead to knowledge, however sometimes it cannot give detail explanation in a dispute between the people of the earth due to the minute details and ambiguities [in that dispute], and at other times due to the fact the people differ when prioritising necessities. Therefore, due to this Allaah [The Most High] commanded [us] to return to the revelation in times of dispute. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً۬ وَٲحِدَةً۬ فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَأَنزَلَ مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِيَحۡكُمَ بَيۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فِيمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُواْ فِيهِۚ -Mankind were one community (i.e. upon Tawheed and Allaah’s Sharee’ah) and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed]. [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 213] Therefore, Allaah [The Most High] designated the revealed Books [i.e. the Qur’aan being the final of them] as the judge between the people in matters wherein they differ. [Ref 6]
Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [hafidhahullaah] said: If you say that the intellect is to be given precedence over the revelation, then which intellect should we follow? Are the intellects of the people combined in the intellect of one man or do they differ? There are intellects of the philosophers, the atheists, the heretics, the people of evil desires and those who confound truth with falsehood; and due to this one of the Salaf said, “Had the desires been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”; therefore, we say, “Had the intellects been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”. [Ref 7]
Secondly, he calls himself, “Ergo Conservator of Enlightened Liberalism”.
Indeed, brothers and sisters, Hudhaifa [radiyallaahu-anhu] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said,
“Trials will be presented to the hearts of people like a reed mat woven stick by stick and any heart afflicted by them will have a black mark put into it, but any heart that rejects them will have a white mark put into it. Thus there will be two kinds of hearts- one is pure like a white gemstone and it will not be harmed by any tribulation as long as the heavens and earth endure, and the other is black and dusty like a worn-out vessel, neither recognizing good nor rejecting evil, but rather immersed in its desires”. [Sahih Muslim 144]
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:
The Fitan trials that will be presented to the hearts are the cause of their sickness and they are the Shahawaat [evil desires] and the Shubuhaat [those affairs that are made to resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality]- the trial of Ghay and Dalaal [i.e. being led astray in knowledge and intent and misguided in knowledge and creed], the trial of Ma’aasee and Bidah [i.e. disobedience and innovation in religion] and the trial of Dhulm and Jahl [injustice and ignorance]. The first affair [i.e. the Shahawaat] necessitates corruption in one’s intent and desire, and the second affair [i.e. Shubuhaat] necessitates corruption in one’s knowledge and creed. [Ref 8]
Abu Hurairah [radiyallaahu-anhu] narrated that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “Hasten towards good deeds, because there will be trials which would be like a part of a dark night, wherein a man wakes up as a believer and becomes a disbeliever by night or he begins the night as a believer and wakes up as a disbeliever, and a man would sell his religion for a portion of the worldly life”. [Saheeh Muslim Kitaab Al-Imaan number: 118]
Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee [hafidhahullaah] said:
Many trials have occurred and from them the trial of the khawaarij, the Rawaafid and killing. Deviation and misguidance have occurred – either fighting and trials (related) to politics or trials (related) to creed, methodology and what is similar to it. Many people who were to be destroyed were destroyed and the one whom Allaah protected was saved and (enabled) to adhere to the true methodology.
Indeed, all praises and thanks be to Allaah, many were saved due to the clarity and establishment of this methodology (of the Salaf), just as the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam] promised- that “There will not cease to be a group from my Ummah manifest and upon the truth –neither being harmed by those who forsake them nor by those who oppose them until the hour is established”.
So, Allaah’s proof has been established against the people from the time Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam] was sent until the establishment of the hour. A time will not come except that His proofs are established by the inheritors of the prophets [i.e. the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah]- the people of sound knowledge, the ‘Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. victorious group] that adheres to the truth and will not depart from it until the establishment of the hour. Allaah’s proof has been established against (the people) and through them (i.e. the inheritors of the prophets) Allaah saves many people, and all the praises and thanks be to Allaah.
Therefore, during every trial, they [i.e. the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] must openly proclaim the truth and clarify it for the people. They should distinguish – for them – between guidance and misguidance, between truth and falsehood, the manner in which the people will be safeguarded from these trials, the path through which they will be saved from entering into trials and other affairs (by way of which) Allaah guides this (victorious) group when (they) face every trial. And indeed the author [i.e. Imaam Al-Aajurree (rahimahullaah) reiterated this hadeeth, “A man will wake up in the morning as a Muslim and by evening he becomes a disbeliever”.
Yes, a man may be upon truth and then you do not see him thereafter except that he has become a disbeliever or a misguided innovator! This is nothing else but humiliation! He used to claim that he is upon good, a possessor of knowledge and upon the truth, but then he falls into disbelief-either Kufr Akbar or kufr Asghar. This is ignominy and Allaah’s Protection is sought. How many people have been humiliated and exposed by a trial! [Suddenly] you come to know of them and their false claims are unveiled, and their reality is clarified for you. [Ref 9]
Finally, brothers and sisters, let us pay attention to these words of Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee [hafidhahullaah] when he stated:
I warn my brothers against the trials and that they turn to Allaah to keep them steadfast upon the Religion. They should supplicate a lot [just as Allaah taught the believers that they say]:
رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغۡ قُلُوبَنَا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَيۡتَنَا وَهَبۡ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحۡمَةًۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ
Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate [from the truth] after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower. [Surah Aal Imraan’ Aayah 8]
They should always make this tremendous supplication and (also) the supplication which Allaah’s Messenger always used to make. Anas [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, “Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] used to say a lot, “O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon your religion’. So the companions said, ‘O Allaah’s Messenger! Do you fear for us? He said, ‘Yes. Indeed the hearts are between two fingers from the fingers of Allaah, and He turns them however He wills’”.
Therefore, the believer does not feel secure from Allaah’s plan [i.e. he is careful of persisting upon wrong, turning away from truth and becoming complacent lest he becomes misguided]. [Allaah said]: None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers. [Surah Al-A’raaf, Aayah 99]
The believer always fears Allaah. He fears that Allaah might not accept his deeds and he is not deceived by hope [i.e. hoping whilst not striving sincerely]. The spending carried out in the path of Allaah and the strenuous effort made through acts of obedience to Allaah is nothing in the eyes of the truthful believer, for they are not equal to the smallest blessing amongst the [uncountable] blessings of Allaah. [Allaah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam said)]: “Glorified be You [O Allaah] and free are You from all imperfections! I cannot fully praise you, for you are as you have praised yourself. [Saheeh Muslim 486]
This was Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] – the one whose past and future sins were forgiven, but he feared Allaah the most. He said: “I swear by Allaah that I am the most fearful of Allaah and the most conscious of Him [based on knowledge regarding His Greatness etc] than you.”
He used to stand for so long that his feet became swollen. ‘Aishah said: O Allaah’s Messenger! Why are you doing this when Allaah has forgiven your past and future sins? He said: “Should I not be a thankful slave?” [Ref 10]
We ask Allaah to guide Ed Husain and protect us from the disease that has afflicted his heart, soul and mind Aameen.
