Words of Wisdom Regarding Sin- By Abdullaah Bin Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] and Urwah Ibn Az-Zubayr [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu anhu] said, “If there is evil in anything, it is between the two Jaws, meaning the tongue. There is nothing more in need of prolong imprisonment than the tongue”. [Ref 1]

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab [rahimahullaah] said, “The believer – at all times – busies himself with obedience to Allaah and that is a blessed time for him. And every time in which a person busies himself with disobedience to Allaah is an evil upon him. This evil in reality is disobedience to Allaah. There is no evil except that it is disobedience to Allaah and sin, because it angers Allaah and if Allaah is angry with a person, he will be wretched in this worldly life and the Hereafter, just as if Allaah is pleased with a person, he will be successful in the worldly life and the Hereafter. A  righteous person said, ‘One complains about the calamity that occurs amongst the people, but I do not see what you are upon as anything else other than the evil consequences of sins’. Abu Haazim [rahimahullaah] said, ‘Everything that busies you from obedience to Allaah, such as your family, wealth or child, then it is evil upon you’”. [Ref 2]

Urwah Ibn Az-Zubayr [rahimahullaah] said, “If you see a man performing a good deed, then know that he has some other deeds similar to it, because indeed good deeds lead to other deeds. And if you see him committing an evil deed, then know that he has some other deed similar to it, because indeed evil deeds leads to what is similar to them”. [Ref 3]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said, “A single sin can result – by the will of Allaah – in some other similar sins and defects that would lead to more a severe punishment. The greatest calamity is the sin that leads to another sin- a third one occurs from the two and becomes greater and thus a fourth one is likely to occur etc. The one who does not possess sound understanding regarding the soul in this subject matter will be destroyed from where he does not expect. Good deeds associate with and follow each other and bad deeds associate with and follow each other – one is the fruit of the other. Some of the Salaf said, ‘One of the rewards of a good deed is to be blessed with the ability to do another good deed and one of the punishments for a sin is that one commits another sin after’. This can be clearly seen amongst the people and there is no need to give examples and proofs’”.  [Ref 4]
