And If They Belie You (O Muhammad), Those Before Them Also Belied

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And if they belie you, those before them also belied. Their Messengers came to them with clear signs, and with the Scriptures, and the book giving light. Then I took hold of those who disbelieved, and how terrible was My disapproval! [Al-Faatir. 25-26]

Meaning, O Messenger! If these polytheists belie you, you are not the first Messenger to be belied, because [فَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ جَآءَتۡہُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ- Those before them also belied. Their Messengers came to them with clear signs] -Meaning, the clear proofs that guide to the truth and the truthfulness of that which the Messenger stated; [وَبِٱلزُّبُرِ-The scripture- Meaning, a written book that gathered many rulings], [وَبِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُنِيرِ- And a book giving light]- Meaning, giving light in relation to its truthful news and just rulings. So, their rejection of the Messengers was neither due to ambiguity nor deficiency related that which the Messengers brought, rather this rejection was due to wrong doing and obstinacy. [ثُمَّ أَخَذۡتُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْۖ – Then I took hold of those who disbelieved]- Meaning, with various types of punishment, [فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ- And how terrible was My disapproval?!] Meaning, it was the severest disapproval and greatest punishment [in this life], so be warned against belying this noble Messenger (i.e. Muhammad) and thus you are afflicted with the painful punishment and painful disgrace that befell those nations of the past. [Ref 1]

Goal Behind Stories of Previous Nations

Allaah [The Most High] said:

قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ فَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ

Many similar mishaps [troubles, problems] of life were faced by nations that have passed away before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved. [3:137]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: Indeed, there were nations like yourselves before you, so look to their evil end.  You have to know that the reason behind their evil end was due to their disbelief in the revelations of Allaah and disbelief in Allaah’s Messengers.  They were the forefathers and you are the descendants. The main affair that connects you to each other is your disbelief and the ruling on that disbelief is destruction. [Ref 2]

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said: If it is said, “What is the benefit in narrating to us the stories of the destroyed nations despite the fact that this Ummah will not be completely destroyed in a manner similar to the destruction of the previous nations before it?”

The Answer: Indeed, this has two benefits: The first benefit is a clarification of Allaah’s blessings upon us that the occurrence of a complete destruction is removed from us, and that were it not for Allaah’s Benevolence we would have been deserving of it.

Secondly: The likeness of the punishment they received may occur in the hereafter for the one who did what they did, if punishment was not received in the worldly life. And this may be understood from the statement of Allaah: “Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the population of towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe. Indeed in that (there) is a sure lesson for those who fear the torment of the Hereafter.” So what is apparent from this Aayah is that what is similar to the punishment they received will happen in the Hereafter, and Allaah knows best. [Ref 3]

The Opposites Are Not The Same, So Blessed Are Those Who Can Distinguish Between Them And Then Compete In That Which Is Obligated On Them to Compete

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Not alike are the blind and the seeing. Nor are (alike) the darkness and the light. Nor are (alike) the shade and the sun’s heat. Nor are (alike) the living and the dead. Verily, Allah makes whom He will hear, but you cannot make hear those who are in graves. You (O Muhammad) are only a warner. Verily! We have sent you with the truth, a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner. And there never was a nation but a warner had passed among them. [Surah Al-Faatir. Aayaat 19-24]

Allaah [The Exalted] informed us that the opposites are not the same based on what His Wisdom necessitates and that which is placed in the sound natural disposition of His slaves.

[وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ  – Not alike are the blind and the seeing]-Meaning, just as it established in their midst – without any doubt – that these mentioned things are not equal (or are not the same), then likewise they should know that the opposites (related to beliefs, acts of worship, deeds) are even more so not the same. Neither are the believer and the disbeliever the same nor are the guided one and the misguided one the same. Neither is the knowledgeable person the same as the ignorant one nor are the inhabitants of paradise and hell the same. Neither are those whose hearts are dead (due to disbelief) the same as those whose hearts are alive (due to Eemaan). There is a (huge) difference between these things of that which none knows besides Allaah. So, if one knows their different statuses, makes a distinction between the affairs and it becomes clear regarding the affair that is obligated on you to compete one another and attain, as opposed to its opposite, then the determined one would choose for himself that which is more worthy and has more right to be given precedence.

[  إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسْمِعُ مَن يَشَاءُ  – Verily, Allah makes whom He will hear]- Meaning, the hearing (that leads to sound) understanding and acceptance of truth, because indeed Allaah is the guide and the one who bestows guidance.

[  وَمَا أَنتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَّن فِي الْقُبُورِ- But you cannot make hear those who are in graves] – Meaning, those whose hearts are dead (due to disbelief, wicked deeds etc); or just as your supplication cannot benefit the inhabitants of the graves in anything (except by the will of Allaah), likewise it does not benefit the one who turns away – the stubborn one – in anything (except by the will of Allaah), but your job is to warn and propagate what you are sent for, whether it is accepted from you or not. This is why Allaah said:

إِنْ أَنتَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ

You [O Muhammad] are only a wamer. Verily! We have sent you with the truth).

Meaning, We only sent you with the truth, because indeed Allaah sent you after a period in which there were no Messengers when people deviated from the right path and were deprived of knowledge, and there was a great need to send you. So, Allaah sent you as a mercy to the creation. Likewise, the upright religion and the straight path with which We sent you is truth and not false, and likewise this great Qur’aan with which We have sent you – which gathers the wise reminder – is the (only) Haqq [i.e. truth that addresses the real state of affairs and there is no way of rejecting it] and it is Sidq [i.e. the only truth that passes perfect and infallible judgement on the real state of affairs].

You (O Muhammad) are a warner- Meaning, you convey glad tidings of Allaah’s reward in this life and the next for the one who obeys you, and a warner to the one who disobeys you regarding Allaah’s punishment in this life and the next, and you are not a new thing amongst the Messengers, because [وَإِن مِّنْ أُمَّةٍ إِلَّا خَلَا فِيهَا نَذِيرٌ- And there never was a nation but a warner had passed among them]- Meaning, the previous nations and generations. Allaah’s proofs were established on them, [لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ- So that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the Faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence, and those who were to live (i.e. believers) might live after a clear evidence. (Surah Al-Anfaal. Aayah 42)]

Will You Then Take Him And His Offspring As Protectors And Helpers Rather Than Me?!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And (remember) when We said to the angels; “Prostrate to Adam.” So they prostrated except Iblis (Satan). He was one of the jinns; he disobeyed the Command of his Lord. Will you then take him (Iblis) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zalimun. [18:50]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] stated: Allaah says to His slaves: I ennobled your father; raised his rank and gave him preference over others. I commanded all the angels to prostrate to him as a (sign) of honour and nobility, and they obeyed Me; but my enemy and yours (i.e. Iblees) refused (to prostrate) and disobeyed my command. He refrained from obeying Me (Allaah), so how can it be fair seeming to you (sons of Aadam) that you take him and his offspring as allies besides Me (Allaah)- obeying him and disobeying Me, allying with him against what pleases Me, whilst they (Iblees and his offspring) are the severest enemies to you. So you ally with My enemy and he commands you with his enmity! Whoever allies with an enemy of a king, then he is the same as the enemy of the king, for indeed love and obedience cannot be complete except by way of having enmity towards the enemy of the one you follow and having allegiance to the friends of the one you follow. As for having allegiance to the enemy of the king and then claiming that you are the ally of the king, this is impossible.

Marriage First or Seeking Knowledge First? [Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee’s Advice]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said: If you are able to exercise patience and seek knowledge, then exercise patience- meaning, study before getting married, just as Umar [radiyallaahu-anhu] said that “Some people might be prevented from [seeking] knowledge due to marriage’’. So, when he gets married, he abandons seeking knowledge and becomes relaxed, and tires himself [i.e. it becomes difficult for him to combine  family responsibilities and seeking knowledge at the same time]. But if he has the ability to combine the Maslahatayn [i.e. the benefits of marriage and seeking knowledge], then that is good, [as long as] he does not consider himself as one who will commit wicked deeds and fornicate; [for] if this is the case, then -by Allaah- it becomes more obligatory on him to get married to protect himself and guard his chastity. http://www.rabee.net/ar/questions.php?cat=51&id=623 paraphrased. O Mankind! It You Who Stand In Need of Allaah, But Allaah is Rich (Free of All Wants and Needs)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Reflection On Surah Al-Faatir

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلنَّاسُ أَنتُمُ ٱلۡفُقَرَآءُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ وَٱللَّهُ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِىُّ ٱلۡحَمِيدُ

O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allah, but Allah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all praise. [Surah al-Faatir. Aayah 15]

Allaah addresses all the people, informs them about their state of affairs and characteristics, that they are in need of Allaah in every way- in need of Allaah to bring them into existence, because they would not have existed if He did not bring them into existence.

They are in need of Allaah to give them physical strength, organs and limbs, which if they were not facilitated by Allaah for them, they would not have been able to perform any deed.

They are in need of Allaah to provide them with nourishment and provision, apparent blessings (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, and the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.) and hidden blessings (i.e. one faith in Allah (of Islamic Monotheism) knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc). Had it not been that Allaah bestowed His bounty on them, treated them kindly and facilitated ease for them,  they would not have received any provisions and blessing.

They are in need of Allaah to avert and repel hardship from them, remove distress and extreme hardship. Had Allaah not repelled this from them, relieve distress and remove hardship, it would have continued.

They are in need of Allaah to nurture them in various ways and take care of them. They are in need of turning to Him, loving Him, worship Him alone and direct acts of worship sincerely to Him alone. And if Allaah does not grant them the ability to do so, they will be destroyed, their souls and hearts would be corrupted as well as their affairs.

They are in need of Him to teach them that which they do not know and direct them to do that which contains their welfare. Had it not been that He has taught them, they would not have learnt, and it had not been for the knowhow  and ability to act which He has granted them, their affairs would not have been upright.

They are in need of Allaah due to the very nature of their characteristics of dependence upon Him in every sense of the word and in every respect, whether they  realise some of those different types of neediness or not. However, the one amongst them who is blessed with knowledge regarding this affair and acts accordingly – the one who does not cease to witness his neediness – in every situation – in his religious and worldly affairs, humbles himself to Allaah, asks Allaah not to abandon him to himself in the twinkling of an eye, aid him in all his affairs and recalls this affair at all times, this person is more worthy of being given complete assistance by his Lord and god (Allaah), who is more merciful to the human being than his mother.

[وَٱللَّهُ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِىُّ ٱلۡحَمِيدُ – but Allah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all praise]- Meaning, the one who is absolutely self-sufficient in all ways, so neither is He in need of that which His creatures are in need of nor is He in need of that which the creation cannot do without, because of the perfection of His Attributes and due to the fact that they are all Attributes of perfection, and sublime (perfect) qualities (free from all deficiencies, faults, weaknesses).

And one of the affairs regarding Allaah’s self-sufficiency is that He suffices the creation in this worldly life and the Afterlife. He is [ٱلۡحَمِيدُ – Worthy of all praise]- Meaning, in His essence, and in His Names because they are perfect; and due to the fact that He has sublime Attributes and sublime Names (perfect and free from difficiences), because they are (Attributes, Names and Qualities) of generosity, kindness, justice, wisdom and mercy. And with regards to His commands and prohibitions, He is worthy of all praise due to that which is found in them and what results from them.

If He will, He could destroy you and bring about a new creation. And that is not hard for Allah. And no bearer of burdens shall bear another’s burden, and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. You (O Muhammad) can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat). And he who purifies himself (from all kinds of sins), then he purifies only for the benefit of his ownself. And to Allah is the (final) Return (of all). [Surah Al-Faatir. Aayaat 16-18] [Ref 1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: Allaah brought the servant out of his mother’s womb whilst he knew nothing, not able to do anything and owned nothing; neither able to give nor take; neither able to harm nor benefit. This state of neediness until he reached a more perfect state is something witnessed and tangible for everyone [to see], and i is well known that this is the very essence of the human being and he remains upon that state. He does not move from this state and enters into a state of Lordship – a state in which he becomes absolutely self-sufficient and not need of anyone and anything; rather he does not cease being a slave, a needy one to his Rabb [Allaah the Creator, All-Provider and the Only One Who Controls and Sustains Everything] and His Faatir [Allaah, The Originator and Creator of Everything].

However, after the human being was granted blessings, shown mercy, granted the means to reach a more perfect state, and Allaah -out of His Perfect Kindness and Generosity- granted him  apparent blessings [i.e. to recognize the Messengers who were sent with Islamic Monotheism, granted him the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.] and the hidden blessings [i.e. granted him the  innate disposition to recognize his Lord when the Messenger calls him to Eemaan, and granted him knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc.], granted  him hearing, sight and a heart, and taught him [i.e. gave him the means to knowledge], granted him ability, subjugated things to him, granted him [the desire and enthusiasm to pursue what is beneficial, and take action], enabled him to receive the service of those of his kind [i.e. gave him authority over other humans], subjugated to him horses and camels, gave him the ability to capture the animals in the sea, drop birds from the sky, subjugate wild animals, dig wells [irrigate water etc], plant trees, dig the earth, learn how to build, acquire the things that are of benefit to him, guard against and protect himself from that which is harmful to him; then the Miskeen [i.e. this absolutely poor, dependent human being] thinks that he has a share of authority and claims – for himself – a kingship [or authority] similar to that of Allaah [Glorified be Allaah and free is Allaah from all imperfections, partners, coequals, similarities etc], and begins to see himself in a manner other than what he was at first, forgets his [prior] state of non-existence, poverty and neediness, until he becomes as if he was not that poor and needy thing. [1] Let’s Call a Spade a Spade! So-called Peaceful Protests Are a Means to Corruption In Both Muslim and Non-Muslim lands: [Exposing a Deceitful Writer Who Seeks a Distinction In The Affair]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abdullah Bin Amr [radidallaahu-anhu] reported that the Messenger of Allaah [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Whoever would love to be delivered from Hellfire and admitted into Paradise, let him meet his end whilst believing in Allaah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would love to be treated.” [Ref 1]

Imaam An-Nawawi [rahimahullaah] said: This is from the Jawaami al-Kalim of the Prophet [i.e. precise speech with a comprehensive meaning] and his amazing wisdom. It is obligatory to pay close attention to this important principle and that a person must not deal with the people except in a way he loves to be dealt with. [Ref 2]

Indeed, there are demagogues and ideologues of some nations who encourage the so-called freedom lovers of other nations to rebel against their rulers and claim that they have a right to so-called peaceful protest, however when these demagogues and ideologues are rebelled against by a group amongst their people, they call them terrorists and do not accept the claim of anyone who calls them freedom lovers! These demagogues, ideologues and many journalists in their nations arouse the criminals and the rabble in other nations and aid them verbally to cause corruption in the land, and if anyone amongst the authorities of those countries seeks to stop them, he is labelled a freedom hater and an oppressor. However, when the rabble and rabble-rousers of their countries are guilty of the same crime, they do not expect anyone else to describe them with a description other than criminals. When property in other countries is destroyed and lives endangered in the name of so-called peaceful protest, they openly aid the perpetrators, but they never accept the same behaviour from the rabble and criminals of their nations. They would give shelter to some of those people who cause havoc in their native countries- claiming that they are defending an individual’s right to so-called peaceful protest and refuse to hand them over to face justice unless if doing so is in their interest, but they do not accept the same stance of some other nations when they refuse to hand over those who have harmed them. Alongside this blatant hypocrisy and double standards, these demagogues, ideologues and many amongst their journalists have continued to make every effort to brainwash millions of people in the world that they are the flag bearers of decency, freedom and progress, and the upholders of the rule of law, even though they have one rule for themselves and another for others. Indeed, so-called peaceful protest – whether in the west or east – is a means to corruption, chaos and insecurity. The people of Sunnah do not make a distinction in this affair. They call a spade a spade and they treat others as they would wish to be treated.

Question to Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah]: Going out to demonstrations, [initiating] revolutions and nurturing the youth upon it; is this from the methodology of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah or not, whether [carried] out within or outside the Muslim countries? Answer: This is the methodology of Marx (i.e. Carl Marx), Lenin (i.e. Vladimir Lenin) and those similar to them. It is not from the Islamic methodology. Revolutions, bloodshed, trials and troubles are Marx’s and Lenin’s school of thought. [Ref 3]

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadi Al-Madkhali [rahimahullaah] said: Protests [or demonstrations] are newly invented matters in the religion. Every newly invented matter in the religion is a bidah; every bidah is misguidance and every misguidance is in the hell fire [i.e. is a path leading to the hell fire]. Allaah’s legislation is perfect and complete-based on The Book and The Sunnah-and we do not know of anything by way of the evidences in the Book and the Sunnah that makes it permissible for a handful of people to gather for demonstrations, which causes disturbance for the people and time wasting. And greater than this [disturbance and time wasting] is abandonment of the prayers [during protests] and the loss of life [i.e. murder]. If one was to kill a Muslim in a single protest, the one [or those] who called to such protests will carry his sins-be it an individual, a group or those who participate. It has been reported in an authentic hadeeth: The termination of the world means less to Allah than the killing of a Muslim [i.e. without right].[a] These protests are nothing but bidah and acts of misguidance advocated by shaytaan; [enticed] by the urge of the evil soul and desires. And these enemies [i.e. shaytaan, the urge of the evil soul and desires] do not come together in any affair except that the religion and worldly affairs are destroyed, just as it is the case in these demonstrations [or protests].

The end results of protests [or demonstrations]: Carnage, destruction, wastage of wealth and time and terrorising those living in peace. And how many disadvantages are there in [that]! It is enough to be considered something sinister due to the fact that the Noble Messengers and the Great Prophets who were put to trial and harmed by their people did not hold protests [or demonstrations]. Neither did they engage in plotting to cause explosions nor committing suicide; rather Islaam has forbidden all of that.

Those who call to protests [or demonstrations] and hold that there is success in it, they are mistaken and they have missed the correct path. Rectification of the affairs can only be by way of the Book and The Sunnah in accordance with the understanding of those scholars who are firmly grounded in knowledge. So whoever calls the people to this chaos, then indeed he has brought about a means to corrupting the land and the slaves, and what has occurred – in the past and at present- is a witness to that.

Therefore, we warn the students of knowledge that they are not persuaded by the speech of those who allow protests [or demonstrations]. They say that peaceful demonstrations are permissible-as they categorise it into this categorisation- without proofs and concrete evidence from the Book and the Sunnah- neither from the actions of the Messenger and the Noble Sahaabah nor from the Notable Imaams; rather the verdict on protests [or demonstrations] is only what has been stated earlier and as well as what has been written by other than myself [i.e. protests (or demonstrations) are not permissible] [Ref 4]

Some Amazing Benefits of The Seas and Rivers, The Night and Day, Sun and Moon!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Reflection On Surah Al-Faatir Aayaat 12-14

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And the two seas (kinds of water) are not alike, this fresh and pleasant to drink, and that saltish and bitter. And from them both you eat fresh tender meat, and derive the ornaments that you wear. And you see the ships cleaving, that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may give thanks. [Surah Al-Faatir. Aayah12]

This is news regarding Allaah’s Might, Wisdom and Mercy, that indeed He made the two seas as a source of welfare for all the creatures of the earth, but did not make them the same because the welfare related to them necessitates that the rivers should be fresh and pleasant to drink, so that those who drink from it and those who sow and grow crops would benefit. And sea should be salty and bitter, so that the air (or atmosphere) is not defiled by the stench of the animals that die in it, as well as the fact that it does not move in a manner similar to a river, and its saltiness stops it from changing so that its animals are in a better state and more tasty. This is why Allah said: [وَمِن كُلٍّ۬ – And from them both]- Meaning, from the salty sea and fresh river water, [تَأۡڪُلُونَ لَحۡمً۬ا طَرِيًّ۬ا – you eat fresh tender meat]- Meaning, fish which is easy to catch. [وَتَسۡتَخۡرِجُونَ حِلۡيَةً۬ تَلۡبَسُونَهَاۖ   – and derive the ornaments that you wear]- Meaning, such as pearls, coral and other than them found in the sea. These are great sources of welfare for the people.

Also among these sources of welfare and useful things in the sea is that Allaah has subjugated it to the people to carry the vessels, such as ships and other means of marine transportation, so you see them traversing the sea and cleaving – travelling from one region to another region, from one place to another place, whilst carrying passengers, their belongings and merchandise, so that by way of this they receive a lot from Allaah’s bounty and kindness. This is why Allaah stated: [لِتَبۡتَغُواْ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡڪُرُونَ  – that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may give thanks].

He merges the night into the day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night are added to the hours of the day), and He merges the day into the night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the day are added to the hours of the night). And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir (the thin membrane over the date-stone). [Surah al-Faatir. Aayah 13]

And amongst these bounties is that Allaah merges the night into the day and the day into the night- one enters the other and whenever one arrives the other disappears; one increases and the other decreases, then they become equal. So, by way of this, people attain welfare for their bodies, animals, trees and vegetations.

Also, Allaah subjugated the sun and the moon, the sun a shinning thing with heat, the moon a light, their movements and disappearance, and thus the people may disperse to seek His bounty [i.e. livelihood], as well as what they [i.e. the sun and moon] facilitate to make the fruits ripe (and plants, crops ready for harvest) and others become dry due to the sun’s heat, and other necessities whose absence would have brought harm to the people.

And the statement of Allaah [ڪُلٌّ۬ يَجۡرِى لِأَجَلٍ۬ مُّسَمًّ۬ىۚ  –  each (i.e. the sun and moon) runs its course for a term appointed]- Meaning, the sun and the moon run their course for a period by the will of Allaah, but they will cease when the end of the world arrives, the ability given to them to do what they do will stop, the moon will eclipse, the sun will wound round and lost its light and is overthrown and the stars will fall.

So, after clarifying what He (Allaah) clarified regarding these mighty things, which He created, and the lessons within them, which shows His perfection and kindness, He then stated: [ذَٲلِڪُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ لَهُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُۚ  – Such is Allah your Lord; His is the kingdom]- Meaning, He  alone is the One Who created these things that have been mentioned and subjugated them for service to humankind. He is the true deity, who alone has the right to be worshiped and to Him belongs absolute dominion. [وَٱلَّذِينَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَا يَمۡلِكُونَ مِن قِطۡمِيرٍ – And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir (the thin membrane over the date-stone)]- Meaning, the deified images and the idols do not own anything- neither a little nor a lot, and not even the thin membrane over a date stone which is a thing of the lowest value (or importance). This statement is related to the specific mention of something by way of which all other things are included, so how can you invoke these deified images and idols when it is the fact that they do not own anything found in the heavens and the earth?

[إِن تَدۡعُوهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُواْ دُعَآءَكُمۡ وَلَوۡ سَمِعُواْ مَا ٱسۡتَجَابُواْ لَكُمۡۖ وَيَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ يَكۡفُرُونَ بِشِرۡڪِكُمۡۚ وَلَا يُنَبِّئُكَ مِثۡلُ خَبِيرٍ۬- If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything)]. [Surah Al-Faatir. Aayah 14]

[إِن تَدۡعُوهُمۡ – If you invoke (or call upon) them]- Meaning, on top of that if you invoke them, they cannot hear your call because indeed they are either inanimate objects, dead things or angels that are busy in obedience to their Lord (Allaah). [وَلَوۡ سَمِعُواْ  – and if (in case) they were to hear you]- Meaning, even if we were to say that this impossibility is possible (i.e. that they can hear you), [مَا ٱسۡتَجَابُواْ لَكُمۡۖ  – they could not grant it (your request) to you]- Meaning, because they do not own anything. [وَيَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ يَكۡفُرُونَ بِشِرۡڪِكُمۡۚ  – And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them]- Meaning, they will free themselves from you and say: [سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا مِن دُونِهِمۖ- Glorified be You (Allaah)! You are our Wali (Lord) instead of them (Surah Sabah, Aayah 41)]. [Ref 1] [وَلَا يُنَبِّئُكَ مِثۡلُ خَبِيرٍ  – And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything)]- Meaning, the knower of everything by Himself. [Ref 2]

[1] Some Aayaat of The Qur’aan About Fear – [Prophet Ibraaheem Questioned The Disbelievers About Safety and Prophet Hud’s People Sought to Scare Him With Their False Deities]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ibraaheem [alayhis salaam] and His People

Allaah [The Exalted] said that Prophet Ibraaheem [alayhis salaam] said to his people:

And how should I fear those whom you associate in worship with Allah (though they can neither benefit nor harm), while you fear not that you have joined in worship with Allah things for which He has not sent down to you any authority. (So) which of the two parties has more right to be in security? If you but know.” It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayaat 81-82]

Meaning: How can this be justified by way of sound intellect or to the one with sound understanding that one fears what you ascribe as partners to Allaah, even though neither can it benefit nor harm, but you do not fear that you have ascribed things as partners to Allaah for which Allaah has neither sent down any proof nor legislated it?!

The person who sets up a deity that has not created anything as a partner to Allaah, [(The Lord and owner of everything, the owner of all the means and causes of harm and benefit); rather such a deity is created, neither can it benefit nor harm itself and those who worship it, neither can it give life nor death, nor raise the dead], prostates to it, humbles himself to it and devoted to it, then this person is more worthy of fearing (evil consequences and destruction) than the one who has not ascribed another deity as a partner to Allaah, but rather he declares that Allaah is one – the only true deity, the one with absolute Lordship, the only one who possesses perfect greatness and authority, the only deity that deserves to be loved, feared and direct one’s hope to. [Ref 1]

[وَڪَيۡفَ أَخَافُ مَآ أَشۡرَڪۡتُمۡ  – Why should I fear that which you ascribe as partners to [Allaah]? – Meaning, when its state is that of inability and cannot benefit;[وَلَا تَخَافُونَ أَنَّكُمۡ أَشۡرَكۡتُم بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ يُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ عَلَيۡڪُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنً۬ا‌ۚ  – whilst you do not fear ascribing partners to Allah for which He has not sent down to you any authority], meaning, you do so solely due to following desires! [فَأَىُّ ٱلۡفَرِيقَيۡنِ أَحَقُّ بِٱلۡأَمۡنِ‌ۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ   –  (So) which of the two parties has more right to be in security? If you but know?]

Then differentiated the two parties and stated: [ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَلَمۡ يَلۡبِسُوٓاْ إِيمَـٰنَهُم بِظُلۡمٍ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡأَمۡنُ وَهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ – It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided] -Meaning, safe from fear, punishment and misery, and they will be guided to the straight path. [Ref 2]

People of Hud [alayhis salaam] Trying to Scare Him With Their Idols

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And to ‘Ad (people We sent) their brother Hud. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. Certainly, you do nothing but invent (lies)! “O my people I ask of you no reward for it (the Message). My reward is only from Him, Who created me. Will you not then understand? “And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you (from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as criminals”.  They said: “O Hud! No evidence have you brought us, and we shall not leave our gods for your (mere) saying! And we are not believers in you. “All that we say is that some of our gods (false deities) have seized you with evil (madness).” He said: “I call Allah to witness and bear you witness that I am free from that which you ascribe as partners in worship – with Him (Allah). So plot against me, all of you, and give me no respite. “I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth). “So if you turn away, still I have conveyed the Message with which I was sent to you. My Lord will make another people succeed you, and you will not harm Him in the least. Surely, my Lord is Guardian over all things.” And when Our Commandment came, We saved Hud and those who believed with him by a Mercy from Us, and We saved them from a severe torment. Such were ‘Ad (people). They rejected the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord and disobeyed His Messengers, and followed the command of every proud obstinate (oppressor of the truth, from their leaders). And they were pursued by a curse in this world and (so they will be) on the Day of Resurrection. No doubt! Verily, ‘Ad disbelieved in their Lord. So away with ‘Ad, the people of Hud. [Surah Hud. Aayaat 50-60]

Allaah [The Exalted] said that they said to Hud [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]: [إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا ٱعۡتَرَٮٰكَ بَعۡضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوٓءٍ۬‌ – All that we say is that some of our gods (false deities) have seized you with evil (madness)]- Meaning, “Our gods have afflicted you with dementia and insanity, therefore you have started mumbling that which cannot be understood”. Glorified be Allaah Who placed a covering on the hearts of the wrongdoers! How could they consider the most truthful one amongst the people who brought the most truthful of truthful affairs to be at this level, which a sensible person would have been ashamed to narrate from them had it not been that Allaah informed us of it. This is why Hud [alayhis salaam] made it very clear to them that he was absolutely certain that neither can they nor their idols harm him, as Allaah stated that Hud [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said:

“I call Allah to witness and bear you witness that I am free from that which you ascribe as partners in worship – with Him (Allah).

Human Rights In Islam – [Excerpts From a Lecture By Shaikh Saaleh Ala Ash-Ash-Shaykh] [Introduction]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

May Allaah bless our close friend, beloved companion and colleague – [Abu Tasneem Mushaf Al-Banghaalee and grant his father abundant mercy] – for sharing the Arabic text of this lecture Aameen.

The Purpose Behind The Creation of The Heavens and The Earth

Allaah said:

And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Taiyibat (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference. [Surah Al-Israa. Aayah 70]

I praise and thank Allaah, who knows everything about what He has created and He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves), All-Aware (of everything). He is praised with all good – praised for His commands, prohibitions, divine legislation and what He has created. It is He who guided humankind and commanded them with what will lead them to perfection and wellbeing in their worldly life and afterlife. He alone is deserving of abundant (unlimited) praise just as He bestowed on us abundant (innumerable) blessings. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone and He has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is Allaah’s slave and Messenger. May Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him, his family and companions. To proceed:

O my brothers! Indeed, these are blessed hours when one learns something about his religion which he did not know or he (recalls) and consolidate what he forgot after a period of time – affairs he forgot unintentionally due to the many affairs and being preoccupied with other things.

There is no doubt that no other divine legislation came to the people that is more perfect than the Islamic legislation. Allaah gave every Prophet a law and a path, and He made Muhammad’s law a complete and perfect law, perfectly suitable until the day of judgement- suitable for every era and place. [Ref 1] [NB: Must refer to footnotes of this reference at the end of the article]

Muhammad’s law solves every problem, preserves every obligation that should be fulfilled, raises every affair that honours the human being, honours the Muslim and raises him because he carries the message of pure Islamic monotheism.  So due to this, it is obligated on everyone to be acquainted with the virtues of this divine legislation, know its rulings, its goals and underlying wisdoms, the obligations it has laid down and what inspires them to preserve and call to it, and that they do not pay attention to any caller to misguidance – those who want to hinder humankind from the truth through different terms and slogans. [i.e. Those who are eager to ridicule and make it look repugnant, in order to make people flee from it. See Tafseer as-Sadi. Surah Ibraaheem. Aayaat 1-3]

We praise and thank Allaah for including us amongst those who have accepted and submitted to this divine legislation- those who learn and strive to follow the behaviour of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah upon him].

Allaah created the heavens and the earth for the fulfilment of two obligations – His Rights and the rights of His servants. Every Messenger and the divine scriptures were sent to explain these two obligations- 1: Worship Allaah alone, disbelieve in all the rivals and false gods that are associated with Him as partners, and 2: Obey His Messenger in that particular era and place. Allaah revealed His Books and sent His Messengers to establish these two obligations.

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [لَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلَنَا بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ ٱلنَّاسُ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ – Indeed We have sent Our Messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance (justice) that mankind may keep up justice. [Surah Al-Hadeed. Aayah 25]

Allaah said: [وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ – And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” [ Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 36]

And because of this, the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: “O Mu’adh, do you know what is the right of Allah upon His servants?” I said, “Allah and his messenger know best.” The Prophet said, “To worship Him alone and to associate none in worship with Him. And do you know what is their right upon Him?” I said, “Allah and his messenger know best.” The Prophet said, “Not to punish them if they do so.” [Bukhaari 6938]

The obligations which all the divine laws brought in general and the Islamic legislation in specific are: To fulfil Allaah’s Right, fulfil the rights of the creation and the rights of the human being. There is no doubt that this will be made very clear when you contemplate on Allaah’s Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger.

Origin of The Term Human Rights In The West

Among the rights that have been mentioned – a lot – in this era is what is called Human Rights. This term, which is used as the title of this lecture, is related to many researches, whether regarding the Islamic legislation, creed, administration of justice, politics or financial matters. It is also related to what the major powers or the United Nations  call Human Rights. As you know, there is a story behind this term and it is a new term – neither found in the Qur’aan nor the Sunnah, nor have the Imaams and scholars of Islaam stipulated the issue of rights by way of this term; but rather rights (or the obligations we owe one another) can be found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.

When the second world war took place, which the allies won – America triumphed over the opponents and the United Nations was founded, they established a new world order. The term  New World Order did not come about after the Gulf War; rather it is a term that came with its principles and fundamentals after the Second World War. The major powers – amongst the countries – utter this term if they want to impose something new on nations, society and the people regardless of their countries and cultures. So, after the Second World War, they wanted to establish a new world order by way of which the major powers would be able to control all countries. At times this control is cultural, sometimes through strong opinions and the exercise of freedoms at other times, and power is exercised through interference in the affairs of the countries in which they want to interfere.

The new global organization included the declaration – in 1948 – they called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a document – from the United Nations – of thirty articles was drawn up; then amendments and additions were made to it. This document  – with the additions at present – is what they advocate and refer to as human rights.  The human rights advocated by the United Nations and the Western countries are based on two affairs, namely freedom and equality between people. Among the provisos were those that prevent various types of dealings and restricted the state’s right when dealing with the people. The Western countries and the United Nations interfered in the affairs of many countries and imposed things on them, and perhaps the media may publish things about some countries because they did not implement those rights. The interference may be greater due to interfering in their affairs, asking them about what they have done to achieve these freedoms and mentioning individual cases.

The Declaration of Human Rights has its own circumstances and motives, and it also has its objectives that serve the principles of the major colonial empires. This term [i.e. Human Rights] is oft-repeated, but it is obligated on a Muslim to be proud of his religion, confident that the rights a person has is great if granted by Allaah [The Almighty], because no one is more knowledgeable than Allaah regarding the affairs of the creation and what is best for them, as Allaah [The Almighty] said: [أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ – Should not He Who has created know? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves) All-Aware (of everything)]. [Surah Al-Mulk. Aayah 14]

Therefore, Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] – in what is legislated – is the one who preserves the rights of humankind. This is why many have carried out research in this subject matter  and proven that the Islamic legislation, the life story of our Prophet [may peace and blessings be upon him], the rulings in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, the actions of the four caliphs and those who came after them are the greatest early document of human rights- lofty in its pronouncement and application. It was fully implemented in the era of the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] and in the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs [may Allaah be pleased with them]. Many researchers have written on this topic, and among them are those who carried weak views and wanted to make every article of that declaration a precedent in the history of Islam or in Islamic law.  Others carried out a good and knowledge based research in various magazines and articles, and they clarified that some of the human rights declared in the West and by the United Nations has been affirmed by the Islamic legislation and some are in conflict with its very foundations.

This lecture will not be enough for us to mention everything related to this topic, but we’ll give you a closer acquaintance so that it can be understood based on the fundamental principles of the Islamic legislation – an understanding that has no ambiguity. And it will be clear to you that what the disbelievers in Allaah and their followers proclaim regarding human rights – based on what the colonialists and the enemies of Islam want – is neither good for Islam nor the Muslims; rather it leads to interference in the affairs of the Muslims, diverts them from adherence to the religion and direct them towards following the footsteps of the West in affairs such as freedom, equality, the relationship between a man and woman, financial matters, rights, political affairs and so on.

The origin of the rights of a human being is referred back to the meaning of Allaah’s statement: [ وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَم – And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam]. [Surah Al-Israa. Aayah 70]

The honour Allaah has granted the children of Adam is based on two affairs: first, human beings are honoured due to their innate disposition, physical traits and that which Allaah subjugated to them in the skies and the earth. Second, Allaah raised the children of Adam above animals and the other creations, gave them preference above many of the created things in every affair through which they achieve happiness, the beneficial affairs in their livelihood and their relationships with other humans. And due to this, the divine legislation was sent in order to clarify the rights of Allaah and the rights of Allaah’s servants. Allaah [The Almighty] said:

And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Taiyibat (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference. [Surah Al-Israa. Aayah 70]

In the beginning of the Aayah, Allaah said, [وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ- And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam], and at the end of the Aayah, Allaah said, [وَفَضَّلۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَلَىٰ ڪَثِيرٍ۬ مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَا تَفۡضِيلاً۬  – and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference].

So, this above includes a mention of the creation, revelation of the divine legislation, the basis of social organisation, and the command that they worship Allaah alone and follow the Messengers [i.e. because Allaah created them, commanded them to fulfil His rights and the rights of their fellow human beings, sent them guidance – through the Messengers – which shows them how to live as individuals and members of society, and provided them with livelihood from the skies and the earth, without which they cannot survive – neither individually nor as a society].

A Brief Analysis of Freedom And Equality

The rights that come under the term ‘Human Rights’ are two types according to Westerners, namely Freedom and Equality. Freedom: The word freedom – which they proclaim – does not exist unrestrictedly even in their own countries. The absolute and unrestricted freedom for a person to do whatever he wants – without being held accountable- does not exist anywhere on earth; rather, freedoms exist where they are found, but they have limits and the people are told that what is beyond that limit is forbidden and it is not freedom.

This gives you the understanding that the word freedom is not found in any place on the earth [i.e. human societies], except that it is restricted. As for absolute freedom in everything – in dealings related to wealth, politics, court judgements, one’s actions, sanctity of life and when dealing with one’s children, this does not exist without restriction in any place on the earth, but rather you will find that freedom is different in different countries -lacking in some countries and much more in others.

So the word freedom, which is part of human rights as they claim, is not unrestricted in their view. Therefore, when this is the case, and if they place restrictions on freedom based on the views of human beings, then we say: “Indeed, this principle indicates that placing restrictions on freedom makes the word unacceptable to every human being [due to its different interpretations in different places, situations, circumstances etc]. However, if it was possible to accept the word freedom [based on the interpretations of every individual], then you should give a person his freedom as he pleases and in that case you would be advocating absolute freedom. But if you restrict his freedom by way of man-made laws and also discreetly- taking over control of his wealth and his abilities discreetly, then indeed this freedom is not absolute.

Therefore, the basis of the freedom by way of which one advocates human rights must be looked at from the angle that absolute freedom does not exist; rather, it must be restricted, meaning that a person is not absolutely free in any place on the earth to act in the manner he wishes, instead this freedom has limits which they describe and distinguish, and due to this one finds what is called protocols and etiquettes. And there is that which is initiated to deal with those who do not adhere to what is related to official ceremonies as well as preventing a person from entering any place with any type of clothing. And in relation to one’s presence and speech, there is something that is tantamount to lack of freedom in every place [due to what is expected from a person in some situations, circumstances and places, and even how he should dress on some occasions]. This is due to what they saw that it is not appropriate to give a person the freedom he wants (unrestrictedly), because at times this freedom is incompatible with what is desired and at other times it is incompatible with one’s relationships and the rights of others. Therefore, this principle regarding absolute freedom is negated.

The equality that they proclaimed means equality between men and women in everything, and equality between all people when receiving and giving rights, such as wage equality, educational equality, the means to good health and medical treatment, equality when travelling, when determining the place in which one wishes to reside within the borders of one’s country as stipulated in their articles, the abolition of slavery etc. Some of the things in this equality are acceptable and some are unacceptable, as will be explained InShaaAllaah.

We are not here to refute that documentary declaration (of human rights), its corrections and the additions that followed; but rather we are clarifying that the perfect and lofty human rights are those which the Lord of humankind has given to the human being. When a human being wants to give rights to another person, he will not be free from desires, because the one who codifies laws, regardless of what that may be, will include his desires in it. And because of this, you will find that Western man made laws, such as French man made law, American man made law and other man made laws are subject to change from time to time – either because the law was first initiated for the sake of the country’s interests when it was established, or due to the influence of the [influential personalities or leaders etc] in that country in some matters, or because the time changed and thus the circumstances changed. And due to this, Allaah clarified that the pre-Islamic judgement is tantamount to a judgement based on desires. Allaah [Glorified be He] said: [وَأَنِ احْكُم بَيْنَهُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ – And so judge (you O Muhammad) between them by what Allah has revealed and follow not their vain desires]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 49]

Every ruling that contradicts the ruling of the divine Islamic legislation must have been dominated by desires and thus it is prevented from been correct (or upright). And there is no doubt that desires divert people from fulfilling rights in the manner it should be fulfilled. Therefore, those principles [regarding equality and human rights] were based on the opinions of human beings, so desires did interfere as well as the interests of the major powers and their desire to control weak countries or countries in which there is much good (or welfare).

A Robust Islamic Principle That Ended Class Struggle And Established Brotherhood Based On Taqwaa

After this presentation,  if you look at what the people were upon before the advent of the Prophet Muhammad [may peace and blessings be upon him]- whether the Arabs of Makkah and those who resided in its surrounding areas, or those in the Arabian peninsula, or those who lived in Syria and Iraq, or the people of Egypt, the Persians and the Romans, you will find that deprivation of liberties was rife and people were denied equality; rather, it was the law of the jungle, so the strong devoured the weak and the people subjugated one another. This is why when the Persian leader asked Rabee [may Allaah have mercy upon him], “What brought you?” Meaning, “You are Arabs, so what brought you to the land of Persia?” He replied, “Indeed, Allaah sent us to remove the one He wishes to be removed from the worship of the servants [i.e. people] and direct them towards the worship of the Lord [i.e. Allaah] of the servants, and remove them from the distress of the worldly life to the wellbeing [relief, security, ease, peace] of the worldly life and the Hereafter”.

The Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] was sent, the Islamic legislation was revealed to him, Allaah commanded him to proclaim the truth, warn his closest family and then all the people. Allaah made his message a mercy for the entire creation. Allaah said:

And We have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)]. [Surah Al-Anbiyaa. Aayah 107]

When the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] came to that society, it was a society in which class struggle occurred and class distinction was rife – this tribe is better than this tribe, these are superior, those are dominant over others…!!!  And the other similar tribal norms, which differentiated and gave preference to some over others. So the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] came to them with a mighty principle and that is the statement of Allaah [The Exalted]: [يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوباً وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ – O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has more fear of Allaah]. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayah 13]

So nobility, virtuousness and distinction was attributed to the one who has more fear of Allaah, and not because of one’s gender, skin complexation, tribe or country; rather Allaah attributed virtuousness based on a person’s piety.

[إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ – Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has more fear of Allaah]. Our Prophet [may blessings and peace be upon him] said, “There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, except based on piety.”

People are equal in a manner similar to the teeth of a comb. This is well-known in relation to the obligations that are obligated on everyone who has reached the age of responsibility. Allaah [The Exalted] made everyone equal, meaning His speech is directed at all people – male, female, the free person, the slave, the rich and the poor regardless their different social statuses. All people are commanded to single out Allaah in worship, obey His commands and fear Him as much as they are able. This is a type of equality in that which everyone is commanded and held responsible.

Likewise, when Islam came, splitting and discord between the people ended; rather, the affair alternated into close brotherhood. The Prophet [may Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him] nurtured and established brotherhood between the Muhaajoroon [migrants from Makkah] and the Ansaar [the indigenous inhabitants of Madeenah].  This – without a doubt – shows the absence of differentiation and extends beyond fulfilling the rights of a person or giving a person something, because of the fact that he (or she) is a child of Adam and that all humans are equal in their rights in the sight of Allaah- equal in fulfilling rights and obligations between themselves.

Islam Laid The Solid Foundation of Equal Opportunities And Uprooted Structural Inequality

When the Muslims conquered the different regions of the earth and Islam spread, the affair became as if it started from the non-Arabs, until the people of Persia and other non-Arabs became the scholars and the Imams of the mosques, and people acquired knowledge from them. It is recorded in Islamic history that many non-Arabs led the Muslims in knowledge, in issuing religious verdicts and many affairs. Take for example Abu Haneefah [may Allaah have mercy on him] who was not an Arab, and Imam Al-Bukhaari [may Allaah have mercy on him] and how his book became an upright example, and there’s none amongst the Muslims except that he (or she) knows Imam Abu Abdillaah Muhammad Bin Ismaa’eel Al-Bukhaari. And consider other examples – besides Al-Bukhaari and Abu Haneefah – amongst the Imaams of Islaam. So when Islam came with its implementation, it abolished the differences that were initiated by the people and those non-Arabs became the leaders and Imaams of the Arabs; why? Because they carried the religion, raised the banner of pure Islamic monotheism – there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, and because there is no distinction in virtue between a non-Arab and an Arab, except through fear of Allaah. When the Muslims disciplined themselves with Islaam, there was no dispute between them regarding social class by way of that pre-Islamic dispute and distinction, because indeed neither did they accept leadership nor give precedence to anyone based on this; rather they accepted everyone because people are equal in this affair.

Quraish’s rulership, the Umayyad rulership and the Abbasid rulership ended; then the rulership of the Mamluks arose and thereafter the rulership of Banee Uthman – meaning in the beginning when it was upright; so the Muslims obeyed them and they became the leaders and rulers, because the Muslims saw that there was welfare for the people in doing so (based on the texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and understanding of the Sahaabah). Therefore, class differentiation and its practice was abolished from the beginning; rather no one had any reservation in implementing Islam. So, Islamic history attests to the implementation of this great principle [i.e. sound equality]. [End of quote: https://video.link/w/j4azb paraphrased]

Finally: Ref 1: The implementation of Sharee’ah Law is the responsibility of Muslim governments and not the insurgents, such as ISIS and their ilk. Likewise, the call to Islaam does not begin with the call to establish an Islamic State nor the implementation of Sharee’ah Law on the people, rather it begins with the call to pure Islamic Monotheism.
