The Ruling On Anal Sex In Islaam

Umar [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, “The Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Be shy; indeed Allaah is not shy of (stating) the truth. Do not approach women (i.e. sexual intercourse) in their back passages”.

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah] said: The command to have shyness is a command of the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] just as it has been stated in the Hadeeth reported by Abdullah Bin Mas’ood [may Allaah be pleased wih him) that Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi wasallam] said], “Be shy of Allaah (in a manner) shyness  should be”. So they [i.e. companions of the Prophet] said, “We do feel shy of Allaah, and all praise and thanks be to Allaah”. The prophet said, “It is not like that; rather the one who is truly shy of Allaah, let him safeguard his head and what it carries; safeguard the stomach and what it carries, remember death and affliction. And he who wants the Afterlife should do away with the adornments of this life, then indeed he is truly shy of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic]”. [Ref 1]

Al-Mubaarakfooree [rahmahullaah] stated regarding the statement of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi- wasallam], “Be shy of Allaah (in a manner) shyness  should be”- Meaning: “A firm, abiding and truthful shyness”. And regarding the statement of the Messenger’s companions, “We do feel shy of Allaah”, Al-Mubaarakfooree [rahimahullaah] said, “They said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! We do feel shy of Allaah and all praise and thanks be to Allaah’ but they did not say, ‘We are truly shy of Allaah’ due to their acknowledgement of the fact that they are unable to do so. And regarding their statement, ‘And all praise and thanks be to Allaah’ – Meaning, all praise and thanks be to Allaah for granting us Tawfeeq [i.e. for guiding and enabling us to perform righteous deeds]. And regarding the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], “It is not like that”, Al-Mubaarakfooree [rahimahullaah] said, “Meaning, true shyness is not what you think, rather it is to safeguard all the limbs against what is not pleasing to Allaah”.

And regarding the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], “Rather the one who is truly shy of Allaah, let him safeguard his head and what it carries; safeguards the stomach and what it carries; remembers death and affliction. And he who wants the Aakhirah should do away with the adornments of this life, then indeed he is truly shy of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic]”. Al-Mubaarakfooree [rahimahullaah] said, “Meaning, safeguard the head by refraining from utilising it in disobedience to Allaah – that you do not make Sujood to other than Allaah; refrain from Riyaa whilst praying; do not lower your head [in humility] for other than the sake of Allaah, nor raise it out of pride. And with regards to what the head carries, such as the tongue, the eyes and the ears, do not utilise them for Haraam. Safeguard the stomach by refraining from eating Haraam as well as safeguarding what is connected to it – such as the private parts, the legs, the two hands and the heart- [from what is Haraam]”.

“Remembers death and affliction”– Meaning, remember death and your abode in the grave. “And he who wants the Aakhirah should do away with the adornments of this life”– Meaning, because the two cannot be combined in a perfect manner, even those who are strong [in Eemaan] cannot do so [i.e. perfect desire for the afterlife has to be combined with abandoning those enjoyable things of the worldly life which one can do without]. So, whoever does this [i.e. the things mentioned this hadeeth], then indeed he is truly shy of Allaah. [Ref 2]

Al-Allaamaah Zayd Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah] stated regarding the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], “Be shy; indeed Allaah is not shy of [stating] the truth. Do not approach women [i.e. do not have sexual intercourse with your wives] in their back passages”. This is shyness in the presence of Allaah – that neither are you seen committing what is forbidden and what you have been commanded to avoid, nor falling short [i.e. out of negligence, laziness, heedlessness etc] in the mandatory and obligatory duties. Likewise, one should have shyness with regards to the rights of his Lord. Also he should be shy of the people within the boundaries of the Islamic legislation and this must be established by way of deeds, so that he is shy in the presence of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] and in the presence of the people. And in relation to this shyness is that women [i.e. our wives] are not approached through their back passages [i.e. sexual intercourse in the back passage], for indeed the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Cursed is the one who approaches a woman in her back passage”. Therefore, the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] forbade this and declared it a major sin, because neither is it the place where the semen should be placed nor where offspring is sought. [Ref 3]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said: The back passage is a place of filth [i.e. the exit place of excrement]. Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] forbids [a husband] from having sexual intercourse with a menstruating woman [i.e. his wife] due to the impurity in her vulva, then how about having sexual intercourse in the place [i.e. rectum] from which [exits] heavy impurity.[Ref 4]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The Quraish and the Ansaar used approach their women from the back (i.e. sexual intercourse in the vagina whilst the wife is not lying down on her back), so the Yahood rebuked them for that. Then Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] revealed: [نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَّكُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّىٰ شِئْتُمْ  – Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth (i.e. have sexual relations with your wives in any manner as long as it is in the vagina and not in the anus), when or how you will]. [2:223]

In the Saheehayn (Bukhaari and Muslim) it has been reported from Jaabir (radiyallaahu-anhu) who said: The Yahood used to say, “If one has sexual intercourse with his wife from the back, then she will deliver a squint-eyed child.” So Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic) revealed: [نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَّكُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّىٰ شِئْتُمْ  – Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth (i.e. have sexual relations with your wives in any manner as long as it is in the vagina and not in the anus), when or how you will]. [Ref 5]

The vagina is the place of seeking after children. As for the anus, it has not been uttered on the tongue of a single Prophet among the Prophets that it is permissible (to have sexual intercourse in the anus). Imaam Abu Daawud (rahimahullaah) reported in his Sunan from Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu-anhu) that the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’Cursed is the one who has sexual intercourse with his wife in the anus.’’ [Ref 6]

If it is the case that Allaah has prohibited sexual intercourse through the vagina due to an apparent harm (i.e. at the time of menstruation or post-natal bleeding), then what about the area (i.e. the anus) which is a place for removal of harmful things (i.e. faeces) permanently. The woman has a right to be fulfilled by the husband during sexual relations; therefore to perform sexual intercourse with her through the anus is violation of this right. Anal intercourse neither fulfils her sexual desires nor does it reach its objective. Also, neither is the anus naturally prepared for this act nor was it created for that purpose; rather the vagina is the natural place prepared for sexual relations.

Sexual intercourse through the anus is harmful for the man; likewise it is greatly harmful for the woman because it is something very strange and far removed from innate natural human disposition. It is from the greatest causes of punishment and blessings being taken away because it brings about Allaah’s Anger and Curse. It also deprives the person of shyness because shyness gives life to the heart [i.e. makes it hate and stay away from evil (and) repugnant acts]. However, if the heart is deprived of this shyness, it starts beautifying repugnant acts and declaring good acts repugnant, and thus corruption becomes strengthened and dominant. [Ref 7]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: The Quraish and the Ansaar used approach their women from the back (i.e. sexual intercourse in the vigina whilst the wife is not lying down on her back), so the Yahood rebuked them for that. Then Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic) revealed: [نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَّكُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّىٰ شِئْتُمْ  – Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth (i.e. have sexual relations with your wives in any manner as long as it is in the vagina and not in the anus), when or how you will].

[Ref 8]

The vagina is the place of seeking after children. As for the anus, it has not been uttered on the tongue of a single Prophet among the Prophets that it is permissible (to have sexual intercourse in the anus). Imaam Abu Daawud (rahimahullaah) reported in his Sunan from Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu-anhu) that the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’Cursed is the one who has sexual intercourse with his wife in the anus.’’ [Ref 9]

Homophobe – A Term Concocted By The Militant Secularists –  Opponents of The Messengers of Allaah

The basis of a person’s Islaam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi- wasallam] is the Messenger of Allaah, to believe in Allaah, declare that Allaah is One without partner, obey Allaah’s commands, keep away from what Allaah has forbidden and single out Allaah in worship. And safeguarding this path [necessitates] the prohibition of every expression [term or word] that contains Shirk Billaah [i.e. ascribing partners to Allaah] or disbelif or will lead to one of the two. [Ref 10]

In the Qur’aan, there are many words that are utilised to rebut the words [or terms] that are in opposition to the call of the Messengers, the revelation that was revealed to them and the truth they brought. [Ref 11]

One of the general fundamental principles [in Islaam] is to know that words [or terms] are two types: Words that are mentioned in the Qur’aan and [authentic] Sunnah, therefore, it is obligated on every believer to affirm them – affirm what Allaah and His Messenger have affirmed, and negate what Allaah and His Messenger have negated. The words [or terms] affirmed by Allaah is truth and the ones Allaah negated are [negated] in truth, for indeed Allaah speaks the truth and guides to the straight path. The words [or terms] of the Sharee’ah are sanctified, and it is from perfection in knowledge that one seeks after the [sound meanings] which the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wassalam] intended by them, in order to affirm what he affirmed and negate the meanings he negated; for indeed it is obligated on us to believe and bear witness to everything he has stated and follow him in everything he has commanded.

As for the words [or terms] that are neither found in the Qur’an and [authentic] Sunnah, nor did the pious predecessors hold a consensus regarding whether they are negated or affirmed, then it is not incumbent on anyone to agree with the one who negates or affirms them until its intended meaning is explained. So, if its intended meaning agrees with the [revelation, commands, prohibitions etc] conveyed by the Messenger, it is affirmed; but if its intended meaning is in opposition to the [revelation, commands, prohibitions etc] conveyed by the Messenger, it is rejected. [Ref 12]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies- Shayaateen (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications.’ [6:112]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:  Allaah [Glorified be He] stated that they aid one another in opposing the command of the Prophets with what some of them inspire others of adorned speech, so that the gullible and feeble-minded people are misled by it.  He [The Most High] stated the reason behind a perpetrator’s [adorned speech] and the reason why it is accepted by the people; then He [The Most High] mentioned [in ayah 113 Al-An’aam] the effects it has on those ignorant souls.

When those souls incline towards such adorned speech and become pleased with it, they carry out what it calls them to do -in speech and action.  Therefore, ponder upon these verses and the sublime meanings they convey, for they clarify the roots of false principles and alert a person against them. And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give [good] names to the greatest types of wicked deeds. [Ref 13]

Imaam as-Sadi [rahimahullaah] said: Allaah [The Most High] stated in consolation to His Messenger Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam], that this is the way things are. We have appointed for you enemies who reject your call, wage war against you and are envious towards you.

[يُوحِى بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ۬ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورً۬ا‌ۚ  – Inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion]- meaning: beautifying the falsehood they call one another to, and adorning it with expressions until they make it appear in the finest image, so that the foolish and stupid ones are deceived by it, and those who neither understand the reality of things nor their (real) meanings are made to comply with it; rather they are amazed by beautified statements and distorted expressions, so they believe that that which is truth is falsehood and that which is falsehood is the truth.

He [rahimahullaah] also said: And from the Wisdom of Allaah in appointing enemies for the Prophets and supporters of falsehood calling to it, is so that the slaves are faced with trials and tests in order that the truthful one is differentiated from the liar, the one of sound intellect from the ignorant one, and the one with insight from the blind one. [Ref 14]

What is a Homophobe According to Those Who Concocted This Term?

A Homophobe is a person who has an extreme fear or dislike of gay people.

Firstly, what these people should understand is that those who believe in Allaah and the final Messenger do not fear gay people, rather they fear sin and do not want to commit any deed that is forbidden by Allaah and His final Messenger Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam].

Secondly, homosexuality is not the greatest of the major sins, rather the greatest of all the major sins is Shirk [i.e. to ascribe partners with Allaah]. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ‌ۚ وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ ضَلَّ ضَلَـٰلاَۢ بَعِيدًا

Verily! Allaah does not forgive [a person the sin of setting up partners in worship with Allaah if he dies without repenting from it], but He [Allaah] forgives whom He pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah has indeed strayed far away. [Surah An-Nisaa Aayah 116]

Thirdly, just because believers in Allaah and His final Messenger hate something does not mean that they exit the confines of justice when dealing with sinners, whether homosexuals, drunkards, thieves, fornicators, adulterers, liars, peadophiles, slanderers, usurers and others. Shaikh Abdul Waahid, Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him] stated in an article of his regarding the consequences of homosexuality as stated in Qur’aan and Bible: “This is the view of all of the famous scholars and jurists of Islam in line with the punishment dealt to the people of Lūt (in the Qur’an) and the hadīth of the Prophet. A Muslim, regardless of which country he lives in, is not allowed to physically harm those he regards to be sinners, nor incite others to do so. Vigilantism goes against Islamic teachings because it creates an anarchic, unjust and disorderly society”. [See here: https://www.abukhadeejah.com/lgbtq-homosexuality-gay-muslims-and-islam/]

Finally, we say to those who concocted the term ‘Homophobe’ that they cannot twist reality by seeking to justify homosexuality and portray believers as weirdos when they reject that which has been rejected by the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all His Messengers; rather seeking to vilify believers in such a case is nothing else but an inheritance from the ancient enemies of the Messengers – those about whom Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] stated, “And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give [good] names to the greatest types of wicked deeds”. [Ref 15]

Indeed, there are those amongst the LGBT movements who – whilst seeking to justify that which the Creator of the heavens and the earth declared forbidden – concoct terms to vilify the believers and desperately seek to twist reality or they even seek to silence everyone who raise objections. This behaviour is similar to that of the people of Lut [alayhis salaam], as Allaah [The Exalted] stated:

وَمَا ڪَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓاْ أَخۡرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرۡيَتِڪُمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّهُمۡ أُنَاسٌ۬ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

And the answer of his people was only that they said: “Drive them [i.e. the believers] out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!” [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 82]

Therefore, should we concoct terms to describe the militant members of the LGBT movement?! Rather, we limit ourselves to that which our Lord has stated regarding homosexuality and all other types of sins and we do not go beyond the limits, just as Shaikh Abdul Waahid, Abu Khadeejah [hafidhahullaah] stated, “A Muslim – regardless of which country he is residing – is neither allowed to physically harm those he regards to be sinners nor incite others to do so. Vigilantism goes against Islamic teachings because it creates an anarchic, unjust and disorderly society”. A Severe Warning to Those Who Speak In The Name of Islaam Whilst Seeking to Condone Homosexuality or Deliberately Propagate Ambiguity In The Affair In order to Appease The Militant Secularists

The Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said: “A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire, then his intestines will spill forth in the Fire and he will go around it as a donkey goes around a millstone. The people of Hell will gather around him and will say: O So and so! What is the matter with you; did you not use to enjoin good and forbid evil? He will say: Yes, I used to enjoin good, but did not do it; and I used to forbid evil and did it [i.e. commit the evil I used to forbid. [Al-Bukhaari 3267 & Muslim 2989]

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said: Indeed, there maybe someone who is worse than this man [i.e. one worse than the man mentioned in this Hadeeth], because he enjoins evil and forbids good, so what will be his state of affairs?! Allaah’s Refuge is sought! [Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm. Pages 270-271]
