Alcohol Consumption, Smoking, Unhealthy Food Production, Carb-infested Processed Food etc: [Lockdown and Social Distancing Urgently Needed]
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Allaah [The Most High] said: [لَّيۡسَ عَلَى ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ حَرَجٌ۬ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَعۡرَجِ حَرَجٌ۬ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلۡمَرِيضِ حَرَجٌ۬ – There is no restriction on the blind, nor any restriction on the lame, nor any restriction on the sick…..] [24:61]
Allaah mentioned the diseases of the body when He [The Most High] spoke about Hajj, Fasting and Ablution due to a marvelous underlying reason – a reason that will reveal to you the Greatness of the Qur’aan and suffices the one who understands it. The principles of physical medicine are three: preservation of health, protection of (the body) from what might cause harm and removal of harmful substances (from the body). Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] mentioned these three principles in those three places [i.e. when He (The Most High) spoke about Hajj, Fasting and Ablution)]. [Ref 1]
There has been an established difference of opinion and heated debate between scientists and even some politicians regarding the benefits and harms of lockdowns and social distancing – whether it is necessary when treating disease, and different governments have adopted different guidelines; however none can dispute the fact that the problem of poor health due to alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet and unhealthy food production has had devastating effects on the health and wellbeing of many in society. Indeed, many of us have lived long enough – by the will of Allaah – to witness its harms in the lives of people. If the stance taken by some people through social distancing and lockdowns to deal with disease – whether one agrees or disagrees with the science behind such a stance or not – was the same stance taken when dealing with problem of alcohol consumption and smoking, as well as when dealing with unhealthy food production, then many would have be saved from their devastating effects by the will of Allaah.
Huge Global Study in the Lancet: There Is No Safe Limit in the Consumption of Alcohol (And the Prohibition of Alcohol in the Qur’an)
Allaah [The Exalted] said:
O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab , and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan‘s (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful . Shaitan (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from As-Salat (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain? And obey Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad ), and beware (of even coming near to drinking or gambling or Al-Ansab, or Al-Azlam, etc.) and fear Allah. Then if you turn away, you should know that it is Our Messenger’s duty to convey (the Message) in the clearest way. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayaat 90-92]
Abdullah Ibn Umar [may Allaah be pleased with him] said that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: “Allaah has cursed alcohol, the one who drinks it, the one who pours it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who squeezes (the grapes etc), the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who carries it and the one to whom it is carried.” [Saheeh Sunan Abee Dawud 3674]
Anas Bin Maalik [may Allaah be pleased with him] said, ”Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, ‘Allaah cursed ten with regard to alcohol: the one who squeezes (i.e. the thing used to make it], the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who pours it, the one who sells it and consumes its price, the one who buys it and the one for whom it is bought”’. [Tirmidhi 1295]
Consumption of Alcohol (And the Prohibition of Alcohol in the Qur’an):
Muslim Attitudes to Alcohol and Intoxicants: The effect upon societies and individuals:
The Dangerous Effects of Drugs & Alcohol in Society in Light of the Quran & Sunnah:
WHY DO MUSLIMS NOT DRINK ALCOHOL? A brief explanation of the wisdoms behind Islam’s prohibition of alcohol and its benefit to society:
Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:
Smoking is forbidden due to the evidences found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and based on sound opinion. Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said: [وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً – And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you] [Soorah Nisaa: Ayah: 29]
It is well-known that smoking causes harm to the body which may appear sooner or later, and this is an affair agreed upon by the doctors of today after the advancement of medicine. Smoking also disfigures the teeth, the lips etc.
Also, Allaah [the Most High] said: [وَلا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاءَ أَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِي جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قِيَاماً – And give not unto the foolish your property which Allah has made a means of support for you]. Therefore, Allaah clarified the wisdom behind wealth and that He made it a means of support through which the Religious and worldly benefits are established. And it is well known that spending wealth on cigarettes neither supports Religious nor worldly benefits, rather it does the opposite.
And from the evidences in the Sunnah concerning the impermissibility of smoking is that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] forbade the squandering of wealth, and squandering wealth is when it is spent in other than what is beneficial. It is well known that spending wealth on smoking is a spending in which there is no benefit, rather it is spending in that which is harmful.
As for sound opinion, then sound intellect necessitates that a person does not partake in that which harms him and wastes his wealth, whilst he is a believer and that he will be brought to account. Therefore, sound intellect necessitates that a person does what benefits him and leaves what harms him, and from the perfection of [one’s religion and character] is to leave that which is of no benefit.
The affairs are three: Beneficial things, Harmful things and Things in which there is neither harm nor benefit. The first affair is sought after, the second affair is blameworthy, and regarding the third affair, a person refrains from it out of seeking perfection in his affairs, but there is no blame on him if he does it. [Ref 2]
Healthy Eating and Obesity
Imaam Ibnul Jawzi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “And how many types of food are there that leads to illness due to an unrestrained desire!” [Ref 3]
First, we all know that constantly over-eating is not good, as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air”. [Ref 4]
The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The best of the people are those living in my generation, then those who will follow the latter and then those who come after them. Then there will come after them people who will be treacherous and will not be trustworthy, they will bear witness without being asked to do so, and they will vow, but will never fulfil their vows, and fatness will appear among them”. Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “And regarding the statement, ‘And fatness will appear among them’ – Meaning: These people give importance to the means of fattening themselves – food, drink and over-abundance. So, their only concern is their bodies and fattening themselves. As for being fat without choice, then one cannot be blamed for that, just as a person cannot be blamed for being tall, short, black or white'”. [Ref 5]
Third, we are all absolutely certain of the fact that unhealthy food production makes healthy eating impossible, so, why is there not a strong stance in favour of a lockdown and social distancing from everything that would lead to diabetes, obesity, hypertension etc? Why not a strong stance in favour of a lockdown and social distancing from modern, carb-infested processed food and a return to solid nutrition?!
Finally, we repeat again the fact that there has been an established difference of opinion between scientists regarding the benefits and harms of lockdowns and social distancing – whether it is necessary when treating disease, and different governments have adopted different guidelines and rules; however none can dispute the fact that the problem of poor health due to alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet and unhealthy food production has affected the lives of many people in society.
Indeed, if the stance taken by some people through social distancing and lockdowns to deal with disease – whether one agrees with the science behind such a stance or not – was the same stance taken to deal with alcohol consumption and smoking, as well as unhealthy food production, then many people would be saved from their devastating effects by the will of Allaah. So, why is smoking and alcohol not banned when it is the fact that none differs regarding its great harms?! There is difference of opinion regarding the benefits of social distancing, lockdowns and masks – even though we obey government directives whether we agree or disagree with the science behind directives, but there is neither difference of opinion nor ambiguity regarding the harms of smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet and unhealthy production of food.
And Allaah knows best.
