In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:
Islam is the religion that gathers together what the soul, the heart and the body needs. Allaah commanded the believers that which He commanded the Messengers- that they worship Him (alone), perform righteous deeds that are pleasing to Him, eat from the good things (He has provided) and extract (benefits from the various things He has created), which He subjugated to His servants in this life, and those who truly established this affair were exhorted to reach every lofty achievement and sound progress.
Whoever knows any of the characteristics of this religion will know the great favor that Allaah has bestowed on humankind and Jinn, and that whoever rejects it falls into falsehood, misguidance, disappointment and loss. The religions that oppose Islam are either based on superstitions and the worship of images, or the paths of atheism and materialism, and they lead the hearts and deeds of their adherents to become like that of animals (in behaviour); rather even more astray from the path of upright conduct than animals. That is because if sound religion departs from the hearts, good morals are abandoned and replaced with evil behaviour; so, those upon this path are led to the lowest level of evil behaviour and thus their greatest concern and the extent of their knowledge is confined to the enjoyment of this present (temporary) worldly life. (see footnote a)
Commentary: The religion perfectly facilitates that which the soul, heart and body needs, and it facilitates purity, upright rectification, perfection, beauty, mercy, benevolence, other good things and sound goals. Allaah commanded the believers what He commanded the Messengers. Allaah said:
[ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُواْ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَٱعۡمَلُواْ صَـٰلِحًاۖ – O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyibat [all kinds of Halal (legal) foods which Allah has made legal (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds]. [Surah Al-Muminoon. Aayah 51] (see footnote b)
Whoever turns away from this religion falls into disappointment. Allaah said:
[وَمَن يَرۡغَبُ عَن مِّلَّةِ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمَ إِلَّا مَن سَفِهَ نَفۡسَهُ – And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim (pure Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself?] [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 130] (Ref 1)
Footnote a: Allaah said: [أَمۡ تَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ أَڪۡثَرَهُمۡ يَسۡمَعُونَ أَوۡ يَعۡقِلُونَۚ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِۖ بَلۡ هُمۡ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلاً – Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like cattle; nay, they are even farther astray from the Path. (i.e. even worst than cattle)]. [Surah Al-Furqan. Aayah 44]
Allaah said:
Certainly! Allah will admit those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), while those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their abode. [Surah Muhammad. Aayah 12]
Footnote b: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “O people! Allah is Pure and, therefore, accepts only that which is pure. Allah has commanded the believers as He has commanded His Messengers by saying: [يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُواْ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَٱعۡمَلُواْ صَـٰلِحًاۖ – O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyibat [all kinds of Halal (legal) foods which Allah has made legal (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds]. And He (Allaah) said:
[ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ڪُلُواْ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ – O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you]. Then he [the Messenger] made a mention of the person who travels for a long period of time, his hair disheveled and covered with dust; lifts his hand towards the sky and thus makes the supplication: ‘My Lord! My Lord!’ But his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful, how can, then his supplication be accepted?” [Riyaadus Saaliheen. Number 1851]
What if a person carries on sinning and does not repent, but his provision increases?
Allaah [The Most High] said:
وَالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ
Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not. And I respite them; certainly My Plan is strong.[Sural Al-A’raaf. Aayaat 182-183]
[سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم – We shall gradually seize them with punishment] – by granting them plentiful provision and respite until they think that they will neither be taken to task for their disobedience nor punished, so they increase in disbelief and transgression, and evil upon evil. And through this their punishment is increased and multiplied, so they harm themselves in ways they perceive not. This is why Allaah said: [إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ -certainly My Plan is strong]. [Ref 2]
[ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ – We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not]: Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawree [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said that this means, “Whenever they commit [major] sins, Allaah bestows a blessing on them and make them forgetful of seeking forgiveness”.
