[10] Tyranny and Some Characteristics of Tyrants: [Severe Warning Against Aiding Tyrants and Oppressors]

In The Name of Allah The Beneficent The Most Merciful.

[وَلَا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ – And incline not toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allah, nor you would then be helped]. [Surah Hud. Aayah 113)

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee [may Allaah preserve him] said, “Do not incline towards the oppressors- those who oppress the people, (shedding) blood, (stealing or taking) their wealth and (violating) their honour, or they oppress the people in their religion by way of innovations, various forms of misguidance, the dissemination of dangerous propaganda and calls that oppose Islam. Do not incline towards anyone from these type of people, do not aid him and do not help him with his falsehood. The verse encompasses all of these types (of oppressors and oppression). Every follower of falsehood is an oppressor, every innovator is an oppressor and everyone who violates a Muslim’s honour is an oppressor. So, do not incline towards any of them and thus you are afflicted by the fire, because when you incline towards the sinner, the innovator, the oppressor, the criminal, the one who violates peoples’ honour and those who violate the sanctity of the divine legislation, it is as if you are pleased (with him) – as if you are aiding and supporting him. Therefore, the believer should be careful of this destructive inclination. (1)

Consequences of Persisting Upon Evil, Whilst Receiving More Provision

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ

Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not. And I respite them; certainly My Plan is strong. [Surah Al-A’raaf. Verses 182-183]

[سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم – We shall gradually seize them with punishment] – Meaning, by granting them plentiful provision and respite until they think that they will neither be taken to task for their disobedience nor punished, so they increase in disbelief and transgression, and evil upon evil. And through this their punishment is increased and multiplied, so they harm themselves in ways they perceive not. This is why Allaah said: [إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ -certainly My Plan is strong] (2)

[ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ – We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not]: Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawree [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said that this means, “Whenever they commit (major) sins, Allaah bestows a blessing on them and make them forgetful of seeking forgiveness”.
