The Consequences When Goals, Aims and Deeds Are Not Founded Upon Piety

Allaah [The Most High] said:

أَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَىٰ تَقْوَىٰ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانٍ خَيْرٌ أَمْ مَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَانْهَارَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Is it then he, who laid the foundation of his building on piety to Allah and His Good Pleasure, better, or he who laid the foundation of his building on an undetermined brink of a precipice ready to crumble down, so that it crumbled to pieces with him into the Fire of Hell. And Allah guides not the people who are the Zaalimoon [polytheists and wrong doers]. [Soorah At-Tawbah: Ayah: 109]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Whoever wants his building to be elevated, then it is incumbent upon him to strengthen and fortify its foundation, because the elevation of the building is based on the firmness and fortification of its foundation; deeds are a building and sound faith is their foundation. If the foundation is strong, it carries and elevates the building, and if a part of the building is damaged, it is easy for it to bear the (damage); but if the foundation is not firm, then neither will the building be elevated nor will it be firm; and if something from the foundation is damaged, the building will either collapse or close to that. Therefore, the duty of a knowledgeable person is that he makes the foundation sound and fortified. As for the ignorant person, he elevates (the building) whilst building upon other than a (strong) foundation, so his building does not remain.
The foundation of deeds is like the physical strength of a person- if the strength is vigorous, the body will be able to withstand burden and repel many harmful things; but if it is weak, the body’s ability to withstand burden is weakened and harm quickly overcomes the person. Therefore, support your building (i.e. your actions and deeds) with the foundation of sound faith, because if something from the top of your building decays and falls down, then it would be much easier to bear (the damage), rather than the destruction of the foundation. This foundation [i.e. sound faith] is based on two affairs:

Firstly, sound knowledge and awareness of Allaah, His Commandments, Names and Attributes. Secondly, complete submission to Allaah alone [i.e. by worshipping Him alone] and (unconditional obedience to) His Messenger alone. This is the firmest foundation upon which a servant of Allaah establishes his building (i.e. his actions and deeds). Therefore, one solidifies the foundation, preserves its strength and carries on being enthusiastic, and thus what is desired [i.e. success in this life and the next] will be reached [InShaaAllaah]. The Corruption Expected When One Does Not Believe In The Hereafter

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَرۡجُونَ لِقَآءَنَا وَرَضُواْ بِٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱطۡمَأَنُّواْ بِہَا وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَنۡ ءَايَـٰتِنَا غَـٰفِلُونَ
أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ مَأۡوَٮٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ بِمَا ڪَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ

Indeed, those who do not expect the meeting with Us and are satisfied with the life of this world and feel secure therein and those who are heedless of Our signs. For those their abode will be the Fire because of what they used to earn. [Surah Yunus. Aayah 7-8]

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They do not desire to meet Allaah, which is the greatest desire of those who have a desire and loftiest hope of those who hope; rather they turn away or may even belie it; satisfied with the life of this world, exchange the Afterlife for the worldly life, (completely) inclined towards the worldly life, make it the end of their aspiration and intention, seek after it, settle on its pleasures and desires through every path it can be attained and every direction they come across, and focus their willfully chosen desires, intentions and deeds to that. It is as if they were created to remain permanently in this worldly life – as if it is not a place of transition to the next life in which the travelers prepare provisions (i.e. good deeds) for the permanent abode to which the first and the last of the creation will travel – to its bliss and pleasures.

[وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ آيَاتِنَا غَافِلُونَ – and those who are heedless of Our signs]- Meaning, neither do they benefit from the Qur’anic verses nor the signs in the universe and in their own selves. Turning away from the evidence necessitates turning away from and being heedless of that of what its guides to and intends. [أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ مَأۡوَٮٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ بِمَا ڪَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ – For those their abode will be the Fire because of what they used to earn].

Technology and Military Technology In The Hands of Atheists and Those Who Do Not Fear Allaah

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Industrialization and modern inventions: Everyone has participated in it – the righteous, the wicked, the believer and the disbeliever. As for religion and (virtuous) manners, then indeed -in this era- it has greatly declined. So, when this industrial advancement is devoid of sound religion and Eemaan, it became a great harm from two angles: Firstly, it beguiled many people, who – due of their ignorance – think that worldly advancement is proof to show that its people are more worthy of achieving every good than others. They are clearly misguided, because maybe a person is one of the most skillful in affairs related to the material world whilst he is one of the most ignorant people in affairs related to the religion, virtuous manners and the (other) beneficial affairs in this life and the next. Secondly, when these inventions are devoid of sound religion, its mercy and wisdom, it becomes a great disaster for humankind due to the wars that result from them, killing, destruction and other affairs related to it. Its overseers and scholars are unable to laydown – for humankind – a stable, just and good life; rather they have not ceased moving from one miserable state to another. This is inevitable and the continuous state of affairs shows that (to be the case). Therefore all good is found in the sound religion and all evil is found in rejecting and willfully denying [Allaah, His Messengers, His Laws, Guidance, Commands, Prohibitions etc]. (2)
