Bringing About Reconciliation Is Good, But Make Sure You Approach Affair With Firm Resolve and Experience – Neither Illusion and Speculation Nor Weakness Disguised as Wisdom!


In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

وَإِن طَآٮِٕفَتَانِ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٱقۡتَتَلُواْ فَأَصۡلِحُواْ بَيۡنَہُمَا‌ۖ فَإِنۢ بَغَتۡ إِحۡدَٮٰهُمَا عَلَى ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ فَقَـٰتِلُواْ ٱلَّتِى تَبۡغِى حَتَّىٰ تَفِىٓءَ إِلَىٰٓ أَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ فَإِن فَآءَتۡ فَأَصۡلِحُواْ بَيۡنَہُمَا بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ وَأَقۡسِطُوٓاْ‌ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُقۡسِطِينَ
إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ إِخۡوَةٌ۬ فَأَصۡلِحُواْ بَيۡنَ أَخَوَيۡكُمۡ‌ۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ

And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them both, but if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it complies with the Command of Allah; then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allah loves those who are equitable. The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayaat 9-10]

This is a prohibition on the believers from transgressing and fighting one another; and that if two groups of believers fall to fighting, then it is obligated on others amongst the believers to prevent this great evil by bringing about reconciliation between them, mediating in the best manner that will bring about reconciliation and employing the means that will lead to that. So, if they achieve reconciliation that is wonderful; (1) but [فَإِنۢ بَغَتۡ إِحۡدَٮٰهُمَا عَلَى ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ – but if one of them transgresses against the other]- Meaning, when they seek after what they are not entitled to and refuse to return to reconciliation (2); [فَقَـٰتِلُواْ ٱلَّتِى تَبۡغِى حَتَّىٰ تَفِىٓءَ إِلَىٰٓ أَمۡرِ – then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it complies with the Command of Allah] – Meaning, return to that which Allah and His Messenger have decided to be acted upon- good deeds, and to abandon evil, one of severest of which is fighting. [فَإِن فَآءَتۡ فَأَصۡلِحُواْ بَيۡنَہُمَا بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ – then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable]. This is a command to bring about reconciliation and be just in bringing about reconciliation, because indeed reconciliation may exist, but not based on justice, rather it maybe based on injustice and unfair treatment towards one of the two disputing groups. This is not the type of reconciliation that is stipulated. It is incumbent that one should not show favour to one of the two groups due to close blood relations, shared homeland or other goals and aims that would necessitate refraining from justice. [إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُقۡسِطِينَ – Verily! Allah loves those who are equitable]- Meaning, those who are just in all their rulings between people and in all those affairs entrusted to them, even including a man’s fair dealing with his wife, family and dependents by fulfilling their rights. (3)

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: “A person should not leave the people in dispute; rather it is incumbent upon him to be eager to bring about conciliation between disputing parties, especially relatives. As for some people-and Allaah’s Protection is sought-they only bring into disputes that which will increase it. This type of person is a shaytaan. Also the one who seeks to bring about conciliation between the people should do that with justice; he should not oppress any of them or judge based on desires”. (4) Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi Al-Mad’khali [may Allaah preserve him] said, “There is one who comes to two disputing parties, misguides them and does not give greater weight to the truth. He has a new doctrine which he considers to be balanced, but it is falsehood and sophistry”. (5)

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: This noble Aayah shows that just as a person takes from the people what he is entitled to, it is also obligated on him to give them everything they are entitled to – whether related to wealth or mutual dealings; rather included in the generality of this Aayah are proofs and statements, because indeed what usually takes place between those engaged in argumentation and discussion is that each of them is eager to establish his proofs, therefore, it is obligated on a person also to make known the proofs possessed by the other person and examine the proofs of the other person just as he examines his own proofs. In relation to this affair, the justice of a person is known as opposed to whether he is afflicted with bigotry, his humility as opposed to being haughty, his common sense as opposed to foolish behaviour. We ask Allah bestow on us every good. (6)

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Fujoor Fil Khusoomah (Iniquity when disputing) is of types: rejecting what is obligatory upon you (to fulfil, give etc) and claiming what one is not entitled to”. https://youtu.be/FGtZtOBbif4

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ – Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa [virtue, righteousness and piety]; but do not help one another in sin and transgression]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 2]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “This Ayah contains all the Masaalih [beneficial affairs] for the slaves in their worldly affairs and affairs related to the Hereafter- be it between themselves or between them and their Lord; for indeed every servant [of Allaah] finds himself within two circumstances and obligations – either [required] to fulfil the obligations owed to Allaah or the obligations owed to Allaah’s creation. As for the obligations owed to the creation, they include [righteous] association, companionship, aiding one another upon what Allaah loves and obedience to Allaah, and that is the goal behind one’s search for happiness and success in the afterlife. There can be no happiness in the afterlife except through Bir [virtue] and Taqwaa [piety], for it is basis of all affairs of the religion. As for Taqwa, its reality is to act in obedience to Allaah based on Eemaan in Allaah and hoping for Allaah’s Reward; fulfil what Allaah has commanded based on having Eemaan in that which Allaah has commanded and affirming the reward Allaah has promised; abandoning what Allaah has forbidden based on one’s belief that what Allaah has forbidden is forbidden and fearing Allaah’s punishment, just as Talq Bin Habeeb [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: ”When Fitna occurs, extinguish it with Taqwa”. So the people said: ”What is Taqwa?” He said: You act in obedience to Allaah upon a light from Allaah [i.e. Eemaan, sincerity etc] and hoping for reward from Allah. And you abandon disobedience to Allaah upon a light from Allah and fearing the punishment of Allah.” This is the best of that which has been stated regarding Taqwa, for indeed there has to be an aim and a goal behind every deed. A deed cannot be considered an act of obedience to Allaah and an act that gets one close to Allaah until it is based on Eemaan, so that which leads to the performance of that deed is solely due to Eemaan – neither [Un-Islamic] customs nor [evil] desires, neither seeking praise nor status and other than it; rather it should be solely based on Eemaan and the aim behind it should be to attain Allaah’s reward and seeking after Allaah’s Pleasure. Therefore, be warned against parroting the word Sulf (conciliation), guessing and voicing opinions whilst you are unaware of the minute details in a specific affair.
