Spread Love and Not Hatred! Brief Rebuttal of This General Statement Uttered By Those Misguided Modernists – Callers to Misguidance – Hiding Amongst Muslims]
Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ – And mix not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth while you know (the truth)].
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Allaah forbade us from mixing truth with falsehood, and thus leading to concealment of the truth. Mixing truth with false is by mixing the two until one of them is confused for the other. This is forgery and deceit by way of which what is made apparent is the opposite of what it is in reality. Likewise, when truth is confounded with falsehood, the culprit manifests falsehood in the image of truth and speaks with a statement that carries two meanings- a correct meaning and false meaning, so the listener is under the illusion that the speaker intends the correct meaning, whilst he (i.e. the speaker) intends the corrupt meaning. [Badaa’i At-Tafseer Al-Jaami Limaa Fassarahu Al-Imaam Ibnul Qayyim’ Vol 1, page 124]
Indeed, when the misguided modernists hiding amongst the Muslims seek to prove that they are moderates by rebutting the khawaarij (extremists, terrorists etc), they also fall into extreme negligence until it leads them to nullify the sound Walaa Wal Baraa, so they begin to also accuse the people of Sunnah of extremism. Whoever refuses to shake the hand of a strange woman is an extremist, disrespectful and a misogynist! Whoever refutes the sinful behaviour of those who participate in so called interfaith prayers is an extremist, a bigot, an intolerant person and separatist! Whoever removes his child from a class taught by a sodomite is a hater, so called homophobe, intolerant etc. This is how some of them judge love and hate based on their desires, whilst seeking to please the militant secularists.
Firstly, Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “It is well known that the mere (act) of shunning by those who (show) aversion or the love of those who (show) agreement is neither an indication of the correctness nor corruption of a statement, except when it is based on guidance from Allaah; rather merely (using) a statement as proof (without guidance from Allaah) is tantamount to following desires. Indeed a person following what he desires is tantamount to following a statement and action he loves, and rejecting a statement and action he hates without guidance from Allaah. Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَإِنَّ كَثِيرً۬ا لَّيُضِلُّونَ بِأَهۡوَآٮِٕهِم بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٍۗ – And surely many do lead (mankind) astray by their own desires through lack of knowledge]. Allaah (The Most High) said: [فَإِن لَّمۡ يَسۡتَجِيبُواْ لَكَ فَٱعۡلَمۡ أَنَّمَا يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هَوَٮٰهُ بِغَيۡرِ هُدً۬ى مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۚ – But if they answer you not (i.e. do not believe in your doctrine of Islamic Monotheism, nor follow you), then know that they only follow their own lusts. And who is more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allah]. And Allaah (The Most High) said to Dawud: [وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۚ – And follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allah].
Allaah (The Most High) said:
[فَإِن شَهِدُواْ فَلاَ تَشْهَدْ مَعَهُمْ وَلاَ تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاء الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِآيَاتِنَا وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالآخِرَةِ وَهُم بِرَبِّهِمْ يَعْدِلُونَ – Then if they testify, testify not you (O Muhammad) with them. And you should not follow the vain desires of such as treat OurAyat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) as falsehoods, and such as believe not in the Hereafter, and they hold others as equal (in worship) with their Lord].
Allaah (The Most High) said:
Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.
Allaah (The Most High) said:
Never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him) till you follow their religion. Say: “Verily, the Guidance of Allah (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him) were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Qur’an), then you would have against Allah neither any Wali (protector or guardian) nor any helper.
So whoever follows the desires of the people after the knowledge Allaah has sent with His Messenger, and after Allaah’s guidance which He clarified for His slaves, then he (i.e. such a person) is of this likeness. And because of this, the Salaf named the people of innovation and splitting-those who oppose the Book and the Sunnah (with their innovations)-ahlul ahwaa (the people of desires) due to the fact that they accept what they love and reject what they hate based on their desires without guidance from Allaah. [Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 4/189-190]
Therefore, we remind them that the affair regarding love and hate will not be judged based on their desires, views and assumptions, rather the affair will be judged based on the infallible final divine revelation. Abu Umamah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah has perfected the faith”. (1)
Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “It is obligated on the Prophet and those who believe with him to agree with their Lord in what pleases Him and what angers Him”. (2)
The people relation to this subject matter are three categories: The first category are those given specific love and allegiance, such as the Prophets, the righteous, the martyrs etc. The second category of people are those who are not given any allegiance, such as the idolater, the hypocrite, the zindeeq, the heretic, the apostate and other than them. The third category are those given allegiance from one angle and not from another angle, such as the open sinners – those whose sins have not removed them from the fold of Islam. They are shown loyalty due to their islam and disavowal due to their sins, but this disavowal is not similar to the one directed at a disbeliever in Allaah and his final Messenger; rather the love they receive necessitates that they are advised, commanded to do good and forbidden from evil. And the disavowal shown to them necessitates that they may be boycotted them and the righteous people do not attend their funerals.
Alliance with the disbelievers is of two types:
The alliance that will remove a person from the fold of islam- becomes a disbeliever after being a Muslim. This is is called At-Tawallee. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya’ (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliya’ to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya’, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust).
Allaah [The Exalted] said:
You (O Muhammad ) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad ), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Ruh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the Party of Allah. Verily, it is the Party of Allah that will be the successful.
The precise principle regarding this loyalty and allegiance is when a person loves and supports the religion of the disbelievers and their creed. Whoever loves a disbeliever due to his religion or creed, or helps a disbeliever due to his religion or creed, then indeed he has fallen into this type of (forbidden) loyalty and allegiance, which would nullify his Islaam and by way of which his deeds are nullified.
The second type of loyalty is related to dealing with them in trade, visiting them and they visit you, giving gifts to one another etc This does not remove a person from the fold of Islam, rather at times it is permissible, such as being kind to a disbeliever who is not at war with the Muslim state, just as Allaah [The Exalted] said:
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.
And at other times, this loyalty is forbidden, such as imitating their specific traits [i.e. either their un-silamic customs or specific clothing, appearance, behaviour related to their religion]. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, ”Whoever imitates a people is from them”.
Sometimes this loyalty is recommended such as being kind to a disbeliever to draw his heart to Islaam and calling him to islam, and at other times this loyalty is obligatory, such as kind treatment to non-Muslim parents. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination. But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience. Then to Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do.
Sometimes this loyalty is disliked, such as when a Muslim employs a non-Muslim servant even though there is a Nuslim to suffice him. These two types of loyalty are found in the statement of Allaah:
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimun (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).
This Aayah includes the two types of loyalty and also bearing in mind that those who fight us in affairs of religion and expel us from our homes – those at war with us, there is no hindrance in making peace and signing a truce with them if the Muslim ruler sees the need to do so, just as the Messenger of Allaah [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] did with the Quraish disbelievers during the treaty of Hudaibiyah. Must read:
A Muslim Can Help a Disbeliever Without Intending to Aid The Disbeliever’s Religion or Creed
Here is one of the proofs to show that it is permissible to help a disbeliever and this help would not necessitate aiding the religion or creed of the disbeliever. Prophet Moosaa [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] helped the disbeliever who was from his nation against a person from the people of Firawn. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
And he entered the city at a time of unawareness of its people, and he found there two men fighting, – one of his party (his religion – from the Children of Israel), and the other of his foes. The man of his (own) party asked him for help against his foe, so Musa (Moses) struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: “This is of Shaitan‘s (Satan) doing, verily, he is a plain misleading enemy.” [Surah Al-Qasas. Aayah 15] (3)
Secondly, from the Sunnah is that none is to be assisted in disobedience to Allaah:
