“What is Homophobia?” Concocting Terms to Vilify Virtue and Beautify Sin Is An Old Affair!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Son or Daughter asked, “What is Homophobia?” It was said, “Concocting Terms to Vilify Virtue and Beautify Sin Is An Old Affair!”

A Principle Regarding Terms, Words and Expressions

The basis of a person’s Islam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] is the Messenger of Allaah, to believe in Allaah, declare that Allaah is One without partner, obey Allaah’s commands, keep away from what Allaah has forbidden and single out Allaah in worship. And safeguarding this path (necessitates) the prohibition of every expression [term or word] that contains Shirk Billaah [i.e. ascribing partners to Allaah] or Kufr, or will lead to one of the two. (1)

One of the general fundamental principles (in Islam) is to know that words are two types: words that are mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah, therefore, it is obligated on every believer to affirm them – affirm what Allaah and His Messenger have affirmed, and negate what Allaah and His Messenger have negated. The words affirmed by Allaah is truth and the ones Allaah negated are (negated) in truth, because indeed Allah speaks the truth and guides to the straight path. The words of the Sharee’ah are sanctified and it is from perfection in knowledge that one seeks after the (sound meanings) which the Messenger intended by them, in order to affirm what he affirmed and negate the meanings he negated, because it is obligated on us to believe and bear witness to everything he has stated and follow him in everything he has commanded. As for the words that are neither found in the Qur’am and [authentic] Sunnah, nor did the Salaf hold a consensus regarding whether they are negated or affirmed, then it is not incumbent on anyone to agree with the one who negates them or affirms them until its intended meaning is explained. So, if its intended meaning agrees with the (revelation, commands, prohibitions etc) conveyed by the Messenger, it is affirmed; but if its intended meaning is in opposition to the (revelation, commands, prohibitions etc) conveyed by the Messenger, it is rejected. (2)

What is Homophobia? George Weinberg – one of the callers to corruption who concocted this term – said, “I coined the word homophobia to mean it was a phobia about homosexuals” or as others say, “Harmful or unfair things a person does based on a fear or dislike of gay people or queer people”.

Firstly, those who believe in Allaah and the final Messenger do not fear homosexuals, rather they fear the fact that homosexual is a great sin in the sight of Allaah. Secondly, just because believers in Allaah and His final Messenger hate sin and persistent sinners does not mean that they exit the confines of justice when dealing with sinners, whether homosexuals, drunkards, thieves, fornicators, adulterers, liars, paedophiles, slanderers, usurers and others. Shaikh Abdul Waahid- Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him] stated in an article of his regarding the consequences of homosexuality, “This is the view of all of the famous scholars and jurists of Islam in line with the punishment dealt to the people of Lūt (in the Qur’an) and the hadīth of the Prophet. A Muslim, regardless of which country he lives in, is not allowed to physically harm those he regards to be sinners, nor incite others to do so. Vigilantism goes against Islamic teachings because it creates an anarchic, unjust and disorderly society”. (3)

Therefore, those who concocted this term ‘Homophobia’ cannot twist reality by seeking to justify homosexuality and portray believers as weirdos when they reject that which has been rejected by the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all His Messengers; rather seeking to vilify believers in such a case is nothing else but an inheritance from the ancient enemies of the Messengers – those about whom Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give (good) names to the greatest types of wicked deeds”. (4)

The Imaam also stated: “Changing the images and names of forbidden things, while their true aims and realities remain, is an increase in the corruption for which they were forbidden, in addition to seeking to deceive Allah and His Messenger, and (it is tantamount) to attributing plotting, deceit, fraud and hypocrisy to Allah’s Sharee’ah and the religion He has ordained”.(5)

As for the militants amongst the LGBT movements, who – whilst seeking to justify that which the Creator of the heavens and the earth declared forbidden – concoct terms to vilify the believers and desperately seek to silence everyone who raise objections, this behaviour of theirs is similar to that of the people of Lut [peace be upon him], as Allaah [The Exalted] stated:

[وَمَا ڪَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓاْ أَخۡرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرۡيَتِڪُمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّهُمۡ أُنَاسٌ۬ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ – And the answer of his people was only that they said: “Drive them [i.e. the believers] out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!”] [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 82]

[أَخۡرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرۡيَتِڪُمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّهُمۡ أُنَاسٌ۬ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ – Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!] – Meaning, (expel) Lut and those who follow his religion because they refrain from sexual intercourse with men. Mujaahid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “(Expel them) because they want to be pure by refraining from sexual intercourse with men and anal sex with women”. Qataadah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “They blamed them for that which is not blameworthy”. (6)

Therefore, after our Lord and Creator has declared something forbidden, nothing can change such a reality even if all the sinful ones amongst humankind and Jinn gather to beautify it. No psychotherapist or psychologist can change the reality that homosexuality is against upright and sound human natural disposition, rather the only option left for the callers to falsehood is to beautify corruption to one another. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies- Shayaateen (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayah 112]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim said: Allaah [Glorified be He] stated that they aid one another in opposing the command of the Prophets with what some of them inspire others by way of adorned speech, so that the gullible and feeble-minded people are misled by it. He [The Most High] stated the reason behind a perpetrator’s (adorned speech) and the reason why it is accepted by the people, then He [The Most High] mentioned [in ayah 113 Al-An’aam] the effects it has on those ignorant souls. (7)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Allaah [The Most High] stated – in consolation to His Messenger Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] – that this is the way things are. We have appointed for you enemies who reject your call, wage war against you and are envious towards you.

[يُوحِى بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ۬ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورً۬ا‌ۚ – Inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion]- Meaning: beautifying the falsehood they call one another to, and adorning it with expressions until they make it appear in the finest image, so that the foolish and stupid ones are deceived by it, and those who neither understand the reality of things nor their (real) meanings are made to comply with it; rather they are amazed by beautified statements and distorted expressions, so they believe that that which is truth is falsehood and that which is falsehood is the truth. (8)
Therefore, the one who concocted this term ‘Homophobia’ to indicate that hating homosexuality or sodomy is blameworthy, or that those who hate such a lifestyle are unprogressive, then indeed this person has uttered a mighty sin and initiated an evil path.

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نُحۡىِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَنَڪۡتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُواْ وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمۡۚ وَكُلَّ شَىۡءٍ أَحۡصَيۡنَـٰهُ فِىٓ إِمَامٍ۬ مُّبِينٍ۬ – Verily, We give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces, and that which they leave behind], and all things We have recorded with numbers (as a record) in a Clear Book. [Surah Yaaseen. Aayah 12]

Imaam Al-Aloosee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: (It is) what they left behind of good deeds, such as the knowledge they taught people, books they wrote, land they gave as endowment or a building they built in the path of Allaah and other good deeds; or sins, such as establishment of laws [legislation, rules, regulations etc] that are tantamount to oppression and transgression, or setting up principles amongst the people that are tantamount to evil and corruption, and the evil Funoon [i.e. haraam professions, crafts etc] which they initiated and were revived after them by the corrupt people. (9)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: It is the good and evil outcomes about which they were the cause of its occurrence during their life time and after their death, and those deeds that emanated from their statements, deeds and circumstances. Every good performed by one of the people due to the knowledge of the servant, his teaching and advice, or through enjoying good and forbidding evil, or knowledge he transmitted to the learners, or in a book which is benefitted from during his life and after his death, or a good deed, such as Salaah, Zakaat, Sadaqah or kindness based on which he was followed, or built a masjid or a place which the people benefit from and what is similar, it will be from the good outcomes that are written for him, and likewise are the evil outcomes. The Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Whoever starts a good thing [i.e. something other than bidah and sin] and is followed by others, he will have his own reward and a reward equal to that of those who follow him, without it detracting from their reward in any way. Whoever starts a bad thing [i.e. a bidah, sin or something that opposes Islaam] and is followed by others, will bear the burden of his own sin and a burden equal to that of those who follow him, without it detracting from their burden in any way”. [Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no. 2675]

This subject matter makes clear to you the lofty station of calling to the path of Allaah, guidance to His path through every means and path that leads to it; and the lowly status of the caller to evil and a leader in it, and that he is the most degraded human being, one who has committed the severest crime and the greatest sin. (10)

We ask Allaah to protect us and our families from everything that will lead to destruction in this life and the next Aameen.
