A Reminder to Humankind Regarding The Basis of Virtue
Allaah [The Most High] said:
O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has the most Taqwah. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayah 13]
[لِتَعَارَفُوا – that you may know one another]- Meaning, so that you may know one another and how close you all are to one another in lineage, but not out of boastfulness. Then Allaah informed us that the most elevated amongst them (i.e. the children of Aadam) are those who fear Allaah the most.
The Prophet [peace and blessengs of Allaah be upon him] said, “Learn your lineages so that you can maintain ties of kinship.” (1)
Ascription to a tribe and a nation is affirmed in Islam. The companions of the Prophet used to ascribe themselves to their tribes and their people in his presence and he never disapproved of that. (2)
The Messenger said, :”Indeed, Allaah [The Most High] has removed from you the pride of the pre-Islamic period and its boasting about ancestors. One is only a pious believer or a wretched sinner. You are sons of Adam and Adam (was created from) dust. Let the people abandon boasting about their ancestors, for they are merely fuel in Jahannam; or they will become more insignificant in (the sight of) Allah than the beetle which rolls dung with its nose. (3)
The Messenger said, “Whoever is held back by his deeds, his (nobility) of lineage will not push him forward”. Imaam Nawawi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Its meaning is that the one whose deeds are deficient and he does not catch up with the performers of (good) deeds, then it is obligatory upon him not to crown himself with nobility of lineage and the virtues of his forefathers, whilst he is lagging behind in (performing good) deeds”. (4)
Ubay Bin ka’b [may Allaah be pleased with him] said, “Two men (mentioned their) lineages during the lifetime of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]. One of them said, ‘I am so and so, the son of so and so (i.e. mentioning his name, his parents and ancestors), so who are you with no mother?’ [i.e. rebuking the other person]. So Allaah’s Messenger said, ‘Two men (mentioned their) lineages during the lifetime of Musa [peace be upon him]; one of them said (to the other), ‘I am so and so and the son of so and so’ until he counted nine (people from his lineage), so who are you with] no mother’ (i.e. rebuking the other). He said, ‘I am so and so, the son of so and so, the son of Islaam’. Allaah revealed to Musa, ‘Indeed, those two who (mentioned their) lineages, as for you ascribed or attributed to nine, (they) are in the hell fire and you are the tenth amongst them. And as for you ascribed or attributed to two, (they) are in paradise and you are the third of them'”. (5)
What is anti-Semitism?
It is said that the term anti-Semitism was coined in 1879 by the German agitator Wilhelm Marr to designate the anti-Jewish campaigns underway in central Europe at that time. Nazi anti-Semitism, which culminated in the Holocaust had a racist dimension in that it targeted Jews because of their supposed biological characteristics. (see footnote a) Others say that it refers to prejudice and/or discrimination against Jews as individuals and as a group. Anti-semites seek to racialize Jewish people and vilify them as the manipulative puppet masters behind an economic, political and social scheme to undermine white people. Manifestations might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity. However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic. (see footnote b)
Antisemitism frequently charges Jews with conspiring to harm humanity, and it is often used to blame Jews for “why things go wrong.” It is expressed in speech, writing, visual forms and action, and employs sinister stereotypes and negative character traits. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities. Anyone who forms an opinion about Jewish people based on their Jewishness rather than their individual behaviour engages in antisemitism. Jews have nothing in common with each other apart from being Jewish – each differs from the other, just as members of other religions and cultures differ from each other. This relationship between the individual and the group is crucial: antisemitism starts where the traits of individuals are treated as deriving from their membership in a group, and vice versa. Attributing characteristics to Jews as a group which go beyond the fact that they are Jewish is antisemitic. (see footnote c)
Observations
Footnote a: Targeting any nation, tribe, clan or race because of their supposed biological characteristics is a satanic deed. We have already quoted the Aayah:
O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has the most Taqwah. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. [Surah Al-Hujuraat. Aayah 13]
Footnote b: Vilifying any group of people collectively and labelling them as the manipulative puppet masters behind an economic, political and social scheme to undermine white people! This requires solid evidence and truthful witness – neither injustice nor concealment of facts. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah; even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allah is a Better Protector to both (than you). So follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you may avoid justice, and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allah is Ever Well-Acquainted with what you do. [Surah An-Nisaa. Ayah 135]
Therefore, whatever is said about any person or group of people in a dispute or disagreement must be based on clear proof and justice. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
So unto this (religion of Islam, alone and this Qur’an) then invite (people) (O Muhammad ), and Istaqim [(i.e. stand firm and straight on Islamic Monotheism by performing all that is ordained by Allah (good deeds, etc.), and by abstaining from all that is forbidden by Allah (sins and evil deeds, etc.)], as you are commanded, and follow not their desires but say: “I believe in whatsoever Allah has sent down of the Book [all the holy Books, this Qur’an and the Books of the old from the Taurat (Torah), or the Injeel (Gospel) or the Pages of Ibrahim (Abraham)] and I am commanded to do justice among you, Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us our deeds and for you your deeds. There is no dispute between us and you. Allah will assemble us (all), and to Him is the final return. [Surah Ash-Shuraa. Aayah 15]
[وَأُمِرۡتُ لِأَعۡدِلَ بَيۡنَكُمُۖ – and I am commanded to do justice among you], Meaning, when passing judgement regarding that which you have differed between yourselves. Therefore, your enmity and hatred does not prevent me from judging with justice between you. And part of justice is that when judging between people who make different statements – amongst the people of the Scripture and others – one accepts what they possess of truth and reject what they possess of falsehood.
[ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمۡۖ لَنَآ أَعۡمَـٰلُنَا وَلَكُمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُڪُمۡۖ لَا حُجَّةَ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمُۖ ٱللَّهُ يَجۡمَعُ بَيۡنَنَاۖ وَإِلَيۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ – Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us our deeds and for you your deeds. There is no dispute between us and you. Allah will assemble us (all), and to Him is the final return].
[لَا حُجَّةَ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمُۖ – There is no dispute between us and you] – Meaning, there is no dispute between us and you [i.e. after the realities have been manifested, and after the clear distinction between truth and falsehood, and after the clear distinction between guidance and misguidance, there is no room for debate, because the goal behind debate is to distinguish between right and wrong, so that the one to be guided is guided and the proofs established against the misguided one. [ٱللَّهُ يَجۡمَعُ بَيۡنَنَاۖ وَإِلَيۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ – Allah will assemble us (all), and to Him is the final return]. (6)
Footnote c: Even if an individual or group of individuals from a particular race, tribe or clan are guilty of a crime, others amongst them cannot be held accountable. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
And no bearer of burdens shall bear another’s burden, and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. You (O Muhammad SAW) can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen, and perform As-Salat. And he who purifies himself (from all kinds of sins), then he purifies only for the benefit of his ownself. And to Allah is the (final) Return (of all). [Surah Faatir. Aayah 18]
Therefore, whatever is said about an individual or group of individuals has to be based on proof and not influenced by racial hatred or a desire to oppress an entire nation, tribe, clan or family.
Allaah Mentioned Specifically The Crime of Those Who Were Guilty
Allaah [The Exalted] informed us about the unjust ones amongst the people of the Scripture, who oppressed their own people. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
And (remember) when We took your covenant (saying): Shed not the blood of your people, nor turn out your own people from their dwellings. Then, (this) you ratified and (to this) you bear witness. After this, it is you who kill one another and drive out a party of you from their homes, assist (their enemies) against them, in sin and transgression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their expulsion was forbidden to you. Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and reject the rest? Then what is the recompense of those who do so among you, except disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall be consigned to the most grievous torment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. Those are they who have bought the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter. Their torment shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Verses 84-86]
Allaah specifically informed us of the unjust behaviour of those amongst them who stole the wealth of others. Allaah [The Most High] said:
Among the people of the Scripture is he who, if entrusted with a Cantar [a great amount of wealth, etc.], will readily pay it back; and among them there is he who, if entrusted with a single silver coin, will not repay it unless you constantly stand demanding, because they say: ‘’There is no blame on us to betray and take the properties of the illiterates (Arabs).” But they tell a lie against Allah while they know it. [Surah Aal Imraan. Verse 75]
Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him]] said: They (i.e. the unjust ones amongst them) made corrupt claims and held repulsive views, and thus considered themselves to be possessors of great status and that the illiterate Arabs were extremely degraded; therefore, the rights of the illiterate Arabs could be violated. So, through these corrupt claims and repulsive views they ate haraam and considered it lawful by way of creed.
Likewise, they lied against Allaah because the scholar who declares things lawful or unlawful is considered- by the people- as one transmitting Allaah’s Judgement and not from himself; and that [ruling of theirs about the wealth of the illiterate Arabs] is a lie. Allaah said: [وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُون – But they tell a lie against Allah while they know it]. This is one of the greatest sins-speaking about Allaah without knowledge. (7)
Therefore, justice requires that one does not seek to affirm or negate any affair regarding a race, tribe or a people adhering to a religion, except based on clear proof. Neither do we give any attention to the statements of those who label everything a conspiracy theory without returning to the credible investigations of the upright scholars of Islam and the senior students of knowledge nor the claims of those who speak based on racial prejudice. Likewise, when criticism is directed at some Jewish politicians who oppress Palestinians, some people – whose forefathers participated in the murder of European Jews – are quick to point a finger at everyone with the term anti-Semite. This is nothing but a path they have chosen to atone for the crimes of their forefathers!
Finally, the subject matter of love, hate and allegiance has attracted much speculation, conjecture and desires, even though not a single one of us would deny the fact that there are things beloved to us and things we hate; however, many amongst humankind are upon confusion in this affair due to not returning to the infallible final revelation sent to humankind. Some of them fall into sinful compromise and others go into extremes and thus commit oppression. The only praiseworthy love and hate is that which is done for the sake of Allaah, and within the confines of the infallible Sharee’ah. Abu Umamah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah has perfected the faith”. [Sunan Abee Dawud 4681]
Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “The human being has that tendency to incline towards injustice and ignorance, and the initial affair regarding him is that he does not possess knowledge and his inclination is towards the evil he desires; therefore, he is constantly in need of detailed (unambiguous) knowledge by way of which his ignorance ceases and to be just in his love, hatred, pleasure, anger, actions, and abandonment, and when he gives, withholds, eats, drinks, sleep and wakes up. He is in need of knowledge to put a stop to his ignorance in everything he says and justice to put a stop to his injustice. And unless Allaah grants him detail knowledge and (detail knowledge regarding the precepts of) of justice, there would be that ignorance and injustice in him that would exit him from the straight path”. (8)
Shaikhul Islaam [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said, “It is well known that the (act) of shunning by those who (express their) aversion or the love of those who are in agreement is neither an indication of the correctness nor corruption of a statement, except when it is based on guidance from Allaah; rather merely (utilising) a statement as proof (without guidance from Allaah) is tantamount to following desires. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرً۬ا لَّيُضِلُّونَ بِأَهۡوَآٮِٕهِم بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٍۗ – And surely many do lead (mankind) astray by their own desires through lack of knowledge]. [Surah Al-An’aam. Verse 119]
Allaah [The Most High] said:
[ فَإِن لَّمۡ يَسۡتَجِيبُواْ لَكَ فَٱعۡلَمۡ أَنَّمَا يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هَوَٮٰهُ بِغَيۡرِ هُدً۬ى مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۚ – But if they answer you not (i.e. do not believe in your doctrine of Islamic Monotheism, nor follow you), then know that they only follow their own lusts. And who is more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allah?] [Surah Al-Qasas. Verse 50]
And Allaah [The Most High] said to Dawud [peace be upon him]: [وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۚ – And follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allah]. [Surah Saad. Verse 26]
Allaah [The Most High] said:
[ فَإِن شَهِدُواْ فَلاَ تَشْهَدْ مَعَهُمْ وَلاَ تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاء الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِآيَاتِنَا وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالآخِرَةِ وَهُم بِرَبِّهِمْ يَعْدِلُونَ – Then if they testify, testify not you (O Muhammad) with them. And you should not follow the vain desires of such as treat Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) as falsehoods, and such as believe not in the Hereafter, and they hold others as equal (in worship) with their Lord]. [Surah Al-An’aam. Verse 150]
Allaah [The Most High] said:
Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path)”. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Verse 77]
So whoever follows the desires of the people after (clarification of) the knowledge Allaah has revealed to His Messenger and the guidance He clarified for His slaves, then he (i.e. such a person) has a resemblance (to those regarded as followers of desires). (9)
Loyalty and Allegience
The first type of loyalty: Whoever loves a disbeliever due to his religion or creed, or helps a disbeliever due to his religion or creed, then indeed he has fallen into a type of loyalty that expels a person from the fold of Islam (after the proofs are established and the barriers of ignorance removed).
The second type of loyalty: This is with regards to dealing with them in trade, visiting them and they visit you, giving gifts to one another etc This does not remove a person from the fold of Islam, rather at times it is permissible, such as being kind to a disbeliever who is not at war with the Muslim state, just as Allaah [The Exalted] said:
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. [Surah Al-Mumtahina. Verse 8]
And at other times, this loyalty is forbidden, such as imitating their specific traits [i.e. either their un-Islamic customs and habits, whether clothing, appearance, behaviour or religious practices]. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever imitates a people is from them”.

Sometimes this loyalty is recommended such as being kind to a disbeliever to draw his heart to Islaam and calling him to Islam, and at other times this loyalty is obligatory, such as kind treatment to non-Muslim parents. Allaah [The Exalted] said:
And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination. But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience. Then to Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do. [Surah Luqmaan. Verses 14-15]

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated regarding the relationship between between a Muslim and a Non-Muslim: “He [i.e. the Muslim] must not oppress him – neither physically nor with regards to his wealth and honour. If the Non-Muslim is citizen in the Islamic state, a Mustamin or Mu’aahid, then his rights must be given. He must not be oppressed with regards to his wealth, such a theft, treachery nor deception”. Loyalty to Believers
The Prophets and the righteous are given full loyalty. There are believers who are given loyalty in one way but not the other, such as the open sinners – those whose sins have not removed them from the fold of Islam. The loyalty they receive necessitates that they are advised, commanded to do good and forbidden from evil. And the disavowal shown to them necessitates that they may be boycotted and the distinguished people of piety refrain from attending their funerals. (i.e. as a rebuke, so that others do not follow their footsteps, but not because they are disbelievers, rather their funeral is attended by other Muslims). (11)
Therefore, one should differentiate the corrupt loyalty championed by the callers to misguidance and the one ordained in the sound divine texts. Islaam is free from the extremism of the khawaarij (ISIS and ilk) and the destructive negligence promoted by the callers to the unity of religions.
There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in everything worshipped besides Allaah and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower. Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are Taghut [false deities and false leaders, etc.], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Verses 256-257]
The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: “By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire”.
