In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Brief Response to a Claim of Some Secularists – Disguised As Journalists – Regarding The Attitude of Post-colonial Muslim Societies Towards Homosexuality

Indeed, one of the absurd claims of some of the foolish secularists is that “Some post-colonial societies continue to outlaw homosexuality due to British colonial-era laws!”

Firstly, this statement is an absurd lie and a vile insult because it implies that there were no laws that strongly disapprove of homosexuality before arrival of the oppressive and greedy colonialists in African, Asian and Arab Muslim societies. Indeed, the religion of Islam strongly prohibits anal sex even between a married couple let alone between two men. Abu Hurairah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Cursed is the one who has sexual intercourse with his wife in the anus”. (1)

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “The anus is a place of filth. Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] forbids (a husband) from having sexual intercourse with a menstruating woman due to the impurity in her vigina, then how about having sexual intercourse in the place [i.e. anus] from which (exits) heavy impurity”. (2)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “The vagina is the place of seeking after children. As for the anus, it has not been uttered on the tongue of a single Prophet among the Prophets that it is permissible. If it is the case that Allaah has prohibited sexual intercourse through the vagina due to an apparent harm (i.e. at the time of menstruation or post-natal bleeding), then what about the area (i.e. the anus) which is a place for removal of harmful things (i.e. faeces) permanently. The woman has a right to be fulfilled by the husband during sexual relations; therefore to perform sexual intercourse with her through the anus is violation of this right. Anal intercourse neither fulfils her sexual desires nor does it reach its objective. Also, neither is the anus naturally prepared for this act nor was it created for that purpose; rather the vagina is the natural place prepared for sexual relations. Sexual intercourse through the anus is harmful for the man; likewise it is greatly harmful for the woman because it is something very strange and far removed from innate natural human disposition. It is from the greatest causes of punishment and blessings being taken away because it brings about Allaah’s Anger and Curse. It also deprives the person of shyness because shyness gives life to the heart [i.e. makes it hate and stay away from evil (and) repugnant acts]. However, if the heart is deprived of this shyness, it starts beautifying repugnant acts and declaring good acts repugnant, and thus corruption becomes strengthened and dominant”. (3)

The above is well known in Muslim societies and only sinful married couples would engage in such an act, then how about when committed or desired by two men?! Read here by Shaikh Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him]

Secondly, the foolish secularists hurl another vile abuse at Muslim societies whenever they boldly suggest that there has to be a change due to the fact that the descendants of the oppressive colonialists have now changed their laws! Indeed, what these fools do not realise or refuse to accept is the fact that the true followers of the Messengers do not follow the desires, views or ideas of anyone; rather they return to the final revelation that was given to the seal of the Prophets. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُواْ فِىٓ أَنفُسِہِمۡ حَرَجً۬ا مِّمَّا قَضَيۡتَ وَيُسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمً۬ا

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad ) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 65]

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [فَلۡيَحۡذَرِ ٱلَّذِينَ يُخَالِفُونَ عَنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦۤ أَن تُصِيبَہُمۡ فِتۡنَةٌ أَوۡ يُصِيبَہُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ – And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad ) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them]. [Surah Anm-Noor. Aayah 63]

Thirdly, when the foolish secularists suggest that we follow their way, they remind us of the Mushrikoon of Quriash. Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّبِعُوا سَبِيلَنَا وَلْنَحْمِلْ خَطَايَاكُمْ وَمَا هُم بِحَامِلِينَ مِنْ خَطَايَاهُم مِّن شَيْءٍ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ

And those who disbelieve say to those who believe: “Follow our way and we will verily bear your sins,” never will they bear anything of their sins. Surely, they are liars. [Surah Al-Ankabut. Aayah 12]

Imaam Ibn Katheer [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Allaah (The Most High) informed (us) about the disbelievers of Quraish that they said to those amongst them who believed (in the message of Muhammad) and followed the (right) guidance: ‘’Abandon your religion, return to our religion and follow our way. We will verily bear your sins if you have any’’, just as a person says: Do this and your sin is upon my neck. So Allaah declared their statement false, saying that never will they (i.e. the Quraish) bear anything of their (i.e. the believers) sins. Surely, they are liars. That is because no one will bear anything of the sins of others. (4)

Imaam At-Tabari [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They (i.e. disbelievers of Quraish) said (to the believers): Be upon the likes of what we are upon, such as our denial of the resurrection after death and that there will be no good recompense and punishment for the deeds of the people. If you follow our way in these affairs and are raised up after death (i.e. we doubt it), and you are recompensed for your deeds, we will indeed bear the burden of your sins. (5)

Imaam Ibnul Jawzi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said that Mujaahid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: This is the statement of the disbelievers of Quraish to those believers amongst the people of Makkah; they said to them: “Neither we nor you will be resurrected, so follow us. If anything is brought against you (i.e. we doubt it), the burden will be on us”. Allaah said that they (i.e. disbelievers of Quraish) are liars due to the claim that they will bear the sins of the (believers). (6)

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حُكۡمً۬ا لِّقَوۡمٍ۬ يُوقِنُونَ – And who is better in judgement than Allah for a people who have firm Faith].

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated: Whoever utilises sound intellect to examine what the Messengers brought (i.e. the revelation given to them by the Creator) – what they commanded and guided the people to, such as knowledge and Awareness of Allaah, the worship of Allaah alone, turning to Allaah in repentance and obedience with true Faith (Islamic Monotheism) and the command to fulfil all the rights (of the people) based on courteous good will, perfecting one’s actions [i.e. based on sincerity to Allaah alone] and treating others with kindness [by sincerely seeking to benefit them though one’s knowledge, wealth or position], and that which they [i.e. Messengers] forbade; then thereafter he examines what the Mul’hidoon call to, he will know that good [and its outcomes], success, sound rectification of the hearts and deeds, [sound rectification of] the worldly affairs and [sound rectification of the religious affairs and their end results in the afterlife] are all in agreement with what the Messengers called to. On the other hand, he will know that the call of the Mulhidoon – (those who have deviated from the upright path ordained by the creator until it led some of them to wicked deeds or disbelief)- is designed to do away with good manners, whose end result is nothing but complete chaos and a state in which one goes along with lusts until the animals become more noble and beneficial than humans. This is no doubt their state of affairs – clearly manifested by what they are upon and what they proclaim with their tongues. Among the most amazing of affairs is that many contemporary writers and politicians seek to remedy the many social ills and try to do so do from many angles, however as for the problem of Il’haad (i.e. deviation from the path ordained by the Creator)- whose surge has carried away the majority of young people, they have not rushed to stop it by returning to sound Eemaan and certainty; rather they have been abandoned to wander blindly in their misguidance and wavering in beguilement, and thus the social ills they seek to remedy gives birth to other social ills, because if the path to remedying social ills is not based on Eemaan and sound Deen, they will increase and become worse. (8)

Indeed, when it is the case that the secularists are trapped in such chaotic behaviour even when seeking to remedy social ills, then how about when they seek to justify and beautify that which the Creator declared unlawful and unnatural. Indeed, they follow nothing else but their desires and thus are imprisoned by shaytaan – the enemy of the Children of Adam [peace be upon him]. Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: “Disobedience is the cause of being in shaytaan’s captivity and a prisoner of lowly desires. A disobedient person is always in the captivity of his devil, the prison of his lusts and leadership of his desires. He is a captive and a shackled prisoner. There is neither a captive whose state of affairs is more evil than that of a captive whose captor is his worst enemy, nor is there a prison more restricted than the prison of desires, and shackles that are more restrictive than the shackles of lust; so how can a heart that is a captive and a shackled prisoner follow the path to Allaah and the home of the afterlife? How can he follow a single path when the heart is shackled and stricken with harm from every angle as a result of the [severity] of its shackles? The likeness of the heart is that of a bird; it distances from harm whenever it flies high and surrounded by harm whenever it lands. It is reported in a hadeeth: ‘’Shaytaan is a wolf to a human being.’’ And just as an unprotected sheep in the midst of wolves is quickly destroyed, likewise if there is no protection from Allaah for the slave, it is inevitable that his wolf will prey on him”. (7)

Their affair is nothing else but to oppose the only upright way of life that is ordained by the Creator and propagated by His Messengers, and thus they beautify every evil that agrees with their desires. Allaah [The Most High] said:

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayaateen (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayah 112]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] stated that they aid one another in opposing the command of the Prophets with what some of them inspire others of adorned speech, so that the gullible and feeble minded people are misled by it. He [The Most High] stated the reason behind a perpetrator’s (adorned speech) and the reason why it is accepted by the people; then He [The Most High] mentioned [in ayah 113 Al-An’aam] the effects it has on those ignorant souls. When those souls incline towards such adorned speech and become pleased with it, they carry out what it calls them to do -in speech and action. Therefore, ponder upon these verses and the sublime meanings they convey, for they clarify the roots of false principles and alert a person against them. And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give [good] names to the greatest types of wicked deeds”. (9)

Finally, we make it absolutely clear that rebutting and rejecting the falsehood of the callers to immorality does not necessitate that one exits the confines of justice and fairplay, whether when dealing with homosexuals, drunkards, thieves, fornicators, adulterers, liars, paedophiles, slanderers, usurers or others. Shaikh Abdul Waahid- Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him] stated in an article of his regarding the consequences of homosexuality, “This is the view of all of the famous scholars and jurists of Islam in line with the punishment dealt to the people of Lūt (in the Qur’an) and the hadīth of the Prophet. A Muslim, regardless of which country he lives in, is not allowed to physically harm those he regards to be sinners, nor incite others to do so. Vigilantism goes against Islamic teachings because it creates an anarchic, unjust and disorderly society”. (10)

We ask Allaah to protect us from the trials of this life and grant us life as long as it is good for us.

O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if life is good for me, and let me die if death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public; And I ask you (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger; And I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty; And I ask you for blessings that never ceases; And I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends; And I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; Aand I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquility etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me); O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Eemaan, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). (11)

O Allah! Rectify my religion for me, which is the safeguard of my affairs; rectify my worldly [affairs], wherein is my livelihood; and rectify my Afterlife to which is my return; and make life for me [as a means of] increase in every good and make death for me as a rest from every evil.
