Guidance During Calamities
Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:
When it is the fact that the creation (humankind and jinn) will face calamities and that no one will be safe from them, the All-Wise (Allah) prepared solutions and then guided His servants to patience, obedience, and hope for reward; and that a servant of Allah should face calamities with strength, trust in Allah, and sincere faith; rather than anxiety, depression, and with a weak soul. So, as a result, a person’s reward is multiplied, their pain is reduced, and their faith is strengthened due to the calamity they have experienced.
Allah said:
And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah, we belong and truly, to Him, we shall return.” They are those on whom are the Salawat (i.e. blessings, etc.) (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Ayaat 155-157]
Allah said:
إنما يوفى الصابرون أجرهم بغير حساب
Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.
[Surah Az-Zumar. Ayah 10]
Allah said:
إن تكونوا تألمون فإنهم يألمون كما تألمون وترجون من الله ما لا يرجون
If you are suffering (hardships) then surely, they (too) are suffering (hardships) as you are suffering, but you have a hope from Allah (for the reward, i.e. Paradise) that for which they hope not. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 104]
Look at these sage instructions found in the Islamic Shariah regarding how one should behave when bestowed blessings and when facing calamity and harm, and how the hearts are blessed with assurance, accomplishment, hope, and continuous gain! The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Amazing is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him, and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him. And this is for none except the believer”. [Saheeh Muslim. Hadeeth 2999]
Where then is this exalted state of affairs in comparison to the situation of people who have strayed from the faith, those who are ungrateful when given favours, enjoy life the way animals do, act haughtily towards Allah’s servants, transgress, and rebel?! And when adversity strikes, they are afflicted with anxiety and weakness, and possibly this circumstance drives them to commit suicide because of impatience, fear, and anxiety that becomes unbearable for them. We ask Allah for wellbeing. (1) [End of quote]
