Allah [The Exalted] said:
And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Qur’an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire). And when Our Verses (of the Qur’an) are recited to such a one, he turns away in pride, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. So announce to him a painful torment. Verily, those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, for them are Gardens of delight (Paradise). To abide therein. It is a Promise of Allah in truth. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Surah Luqman. Ayaat 6-9]
[وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشۡتَرِى لَهۡوَ ٱلۡحَدِيثِ – And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks]– This includes all types of speech that distract the hearts and hinder them from what they are required to pursue; includes every prohibited speech, every nonsense, and falsehood, speech that leads to a desire for disbelief, evil behaviour, disobedience, speech that leads to rejection of truth, argumentation based on falsehood in order to nullify the truth, (impermissible) backbiting, tale carrying (footnote a), lying, revilement, insult, singing, musical instruments of the Shaytan, and foolish speech in which there is no benefit for a person’s religious or worldly affairs; (1) everything that distracts from obedience to Allah and hinders people from His Pleasure – to lead people astray from the path of guidance to the path of desires, and to take Allah’s verses as a mockery. These people will receive a punishment that will humiliate and disgrace them. (2)
[وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسۡتَڪۡبِرً۬ا كَأَن لَّمۡ يَسۡمَعۡهَا كَأَنَّ فِىٓ أُذُنَيۡهِ وَقۡرً۬اۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ – And when Our Verses (of the Qur’an) are recited to such a one, he turns away in pride, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear]- Meaning, When the verses of the Qur’an are recited to him, he turns away from obedience to Allah and is arrogant, and giving no consideration, as if he did not hear anything, as if he had deafness in his ears. And whoever is in this state, give him a promise – O Messenger – of a painful torment in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection. (3)

Footnote a: When is speaking about someone behind his back not considered backbiting?
It is not considered backbiting when a person makes a complaint about an oppressor to a person who has the ability to stop the oppression; when seeking help to stop evil- by making that known to the person who has the ability to stop the evil; when seeking for a fatwa; when warning the Muslims so that they are not deceived; when mentioning a person who commits his evil openly or one who calls to bidah and when identifying someone with a physical defect, whilst not intending defamation.
