Do Not Be Jealous of The One Who Benefits Others – Ala Shaykh

Shaykh Sāliḥ Āl ash-Shaykh (hafithahullāh) said:

“Do not be jealous of the one who has memorised more than you or is more knowledgeable than you or is more beneficial to the slaves (of Allāh) than you, rather be happy that someone is establishing the rights of Allāh (عز وجل) and the rights of the slaves.”

Reciting The Quraan Makes Your Affairs Easy

Al-haafith Ad-Diyaa’ said concerning Ibrahim Ibn ‘Abdil-Wahid Al-Maqdisi: He advised me at the time I travelled [for seeking knowledge]

“Increase in recitation of the Quran and do not leave it. For indeed whatever you seek will be facilitated for you proportionate to what you recite.”

Al-haafith Ad-Diyaa’ then said:

I saw that and experienced it many times. If I recited a lot, then listening to hadith and writing a great deal of it down would become easy. When I didn’t recite, that wouldn’t become easy for me.

They crucified him for being upon the Sunnah

The imam, the exemplar, the martyr inshaa Allah, Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Sahl Ar-Ramli, known as Ibn An-Nabulsi [d.363 AH]1

  • Ibn Al-Jawzi mentioned concerning Jawhar As-Siqilli the Fatimid general that he said to Abu Bakr An-Nabulsi:  “It has reached us that you have said that if a man has ten arrows, he must shoot one arrow at the Romans, and nine at us [The Fatimid Shiites]. He [Abu Bakr] said: “I haven’t said that. Rather, I said that if he has ten arrows, he must shoot nine at you, and the tenth he must shoot at you also! For indeed you have changed the religion, killed the righteous and claimed divine light”. So he [the general] had him brought into public, then beaten and then he ordered a Jew who peeled off his skin.”
  • Abu Tharr Al-Hafith said: “Banu ‘Ubaid imprisoned him and they crucified him [for being] upon the Sunnah. I heard Ad-Daraqutni mention him while crying, saying: While being skinned he was reciting:

         {كَانَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي الْكِتَابِ مَسْطُورًا}

{That has been written in The Book [of decrees]} – [Al-Israa:58]”

  • Ma’mar Ibn Ahmad said: “A trustworthy individual informed me that Abu Bakr was skinned from the crown of his head to his face. He was making remembrance of Allah and was patient until he [the skinner] reached his chest. The skinner then had pity on him and so stabbed him with a knife into his heart putting an end to his life.”
  • He also said: “…And when he had been skinned, recitation of The Qur’an could be heard from his body”
  • “Ibn As-Sa’saa’ Al-Misri related that he saw Abu Bakr Ibn An-Nabulsi in a dream after he had been crucified while he was in the best appearance. So he said: “What did Allah do with you?” He replied:

“My Lord gifted me with eternal honour ~ And He promised me imminent victory

And He brought me close and near to Him ~ And He said: Live delightfully in a life next to Me”

Excerpts: Imam Ath-Thahabi’s Siyar A’alam An-Nubula; 16/148 – 150

Shaikh Abdullah Al-Bukhari spoke concerning this Imam’s crucifixion in his lecture “Steadfastness upon the Sunnah” on 7th Shawwal 1436. The Shaikh and those present in the gathering cried when hearing the patience that this Imam had in remaining steadfast upon the Sunnah.

Shaikh Rabee’ on the incorrect form of love and hate

After mentioning the hadeeth of this Ummah splitting into 73 sects, Shaikh Rabee’ states concerning the saved sect:

“They are the people of truth, they are the people of Sunnah, they are the knowledgeable ones of The Book and The Sunnah, they are the enemies of innovation, misguidance, disbelief, polytheism and all forms of deviation. They love only the truth, basing their loyalty and their hatred upon it.

And you’ll find that many people [erroneously] think that animosity and hatred is only to be directed at the disbelievers! Whereas towards every person who has affiliated himself to Islaam, no hatred is to be directed at him! He deserves nothing but love! He deserves absolute allegiance even if he is from the most despicable people of innovation and the most misguided of them! Even if he has the innovation of Jahm, Bishr Al-Marisi, ‘Amr Ibn ‘Ubaid and others besides them from the Jahmiyyah, Khawaarij, Mu’tazilah, Murji’ah and people of misguidance!”

[9/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is leaving off excessive looking, speech, listening, eating and sleep. For indeed too much of these turns into pain, sadness and grief within the heart. They confine it, constrain it and cause it to become tightened. It [i.e. the heart] agonizes because of them, in fact the vast majority of agonies in this world and the next are due to them.

So la ilaa-ha illa Allah! How constrained is the chest of he who took an active part in every affliction from these affliction! How bitter is his life! How bad is his condition! How severe is the heaviness of his heart.

Likewise, laa ilaa-ha illa Allah! How blissful is the life of he who took an active part in [attaining] every characteristic from those praiseworthy characteristics. His efforts would revolve around them, being committed to them.

Therefore, this person will have an abundant portion of what is mentioned in the statement of Allah – The Most High:

﴿إنَّ الأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيم﴾ [الانفطار: 13]

Indeed the righteous shall surely be in bliss [Al-Infitaar: 13]

Whereas the former person [i.e. the wretched one] will have an abundant portion of what is mentioned in the statement of Allah – The Most High:

﴿وإنَّ الفُجَّارَ لَفِى جَحِيمٍ﴾ [الانفطار: 14]

And indeed the sinners shall surely be in the Hellfire [Al-Infitaar: 14]

The point of all this is that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ was the most perfect of creation in respect to every characteristic by which relaxation of the chest, lightheartedness, delight of the eye and life of the soul can be attained.

Therefore, he is the most perfect of creation in relation to this relaxation, life and delight of the eye alongside what he has been specified with of perceivable relaxation.

He is the most perfect of creation in respect to being followed. The most perfect in relaxation, joy and delight of the eye, and in accordance to the degree that he [i.e. The Messenger] is followed, does the slave attain whatever he actually ends up attaining of relaxation of the heart, delight of the eye and joy of the soul.

Therefore he ﷺ is at the peak of perfection in relation to relaxation of the chest, elevation of rank and pardoning of sin. And his followers have such a portion of that that is proportionate to the degree that they follow him. And Allah is the one from whom aid is sought.

Similarly, his followers have such a portion of protection from Allah for them, safeguarding them, defending them, strengthening them and aiding them that is proportionate to the degree of their following [The Messenger]. [So among them is] the one who gives it little care, and [among them] is he who gives it a great deal of importance.

Therefore, whosoever ends up finding goodness let him praise Allah. And whosoever ends up finding other than that, then he can blame none but himself.

[8/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest], indeed from the greatest of them is removing contaminations of the heart; the blameworthy characteristics that bring about it’s [i.e. the chest’s] tightness and agony, hindering it from recuperating.

For indeed if a person adopts the avenues that [are intended to] alleviate his chest without actually removing those blameworthy characteristics from his heart, then his attempt at alleviating his chest will be useless.

The end result of the person, is that he has two opposing elements that are repeatedly affecting his heart, he belonging to the predominant element of the two.

[7/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is courage, for indeed the courageous one has an alleviated chest, he is easy going and has a big heart.

As for the coward; he has the tightest of chest among people, having the heaviest heart among them. He experiences no form of joy, happiness, delight and bliss, except for that form that is suited for the beastly animals. As for the happiness of the soul, its delight, bliss and joyfulness then every coward is denied that.

Similar to how it is denied for every stingy person, every person who turns away from Allah – The Sublime and Most High, every person who is heedless towards the remembrance of Allah, ignorant of His – The Most High’s – names, attributes and His religion, having his heart attached to those besides Him.

Indeed this bliss and happiness turns into gardens and a paradise in ones grave, whereas that tightness and confinement turns the grave into torment and imprisonment.

Therefore, the slave’s condition in his grave is similar to the heart’s condition in the chest, whether it is in the form of bliss, torment, imprisonment or freedom.

In addition, no consideration is given to a certain external factor related to this alleviation of the chest, and neither is any consideration given to a certain external factor related to the tightness of the chest. That is because external factors go away once their causes have gone.

So, the only matter that is taken into consideration is the actual characteristic established within the heart, bringing about either it’s [i.e. the heart’s] relaxation or its heaviness, because that is the scale [by which a person’s condition is measured]. And Allah is the one from whom aid is sought.

[6/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among the causes that alleviate the chest is continually making thikr of Him in every condition [that one is in] and in every place. Because thikr has an amazing effect in alleviating the chest and bringing bliss to the heart. [Whereas] heedlessness [from making rememberance of Him] has a shocking effect in constraining, restricting and tormenting it.

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is kindness to creation, benefiting them with what is possible by use of wealth, power, physical support and the various other acts of benevolence.

For indeed the generous and benevolent individual has the most alleviated of chests, the best spirit and having the greatest peace of mind.

However, the stingy one who has no [characteristic of] benevolence in him, he has the most constricted of chests among humankind, living the bitterest of life and being the saddest and most distressed out of them.

Indeed Allah’s Messenger ﷺ gave an example in the Saheeh of the stingy person and the charitable person:

“Like that of two men wearing metal armour. Whenever the charitable one intends on giving charity, [the armour] widens and expands for him, so much so that it causes his garments to trail and obliterates his traces. But, when the stingy one intends on giving in charity, every ring grips the place where it is and doesn’t expand for him.”

Therefore, this is the example of the alleviation of the charitable believer’s chest and expansion of his heart. [As well as] an example of the one stingy one who has a constrained chest and a heavy heart.

[5/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among the greatest of causes that constrain the chest are turning away from Allah The Most High, attaching ones heart to others besides Him, being heedless towards remembering Him, and loving others besides Him.

For indeed whosoever loves something besides Allah, he will be agonized by it. His heart will become imprisoned by that other thing. Thus, none will exist upon earth more wretched that him, nor in a gloomier state than him, nor living a more bitter life than him, nor having a heart harder than his.

Because love is of two types:

[The first being] the love that is the paradise of [this] earth, the rejoicement of the spirt, the gratification of the heart, the bliss of the soul and it’s nourishment and cure, in fact it is its life and delight. It is love of Allah alone with all of one’s heart, and by drawing out and directing the intensities of one’s attachments, wants and love entirely towards Him.

[The second type of] love is the torment of the soul, the sadness of the spirit, the prison of the heart and the tightness of the chest. It is the cause of pain, bitterness and weariness. It is the love for other than Him – glorified be He.

[4/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is turning to Allah – glorified and most high be He – in repentance, and loving Him with all your heart, advancing towards Him, taking pleasure in worshiping Him.

Because there is nothing more relaxing to the chest of the slave than that. To such an extent, that you’ll sometimes find the slave saying: “If I’m going to be in Paradise in state of being similar to this, then in such a case I’ll truly be living a pleasant life”.

Love [of Allah] has an amazing effect in alleviating the chest, bringing about pleasure to the soul and happiness to the heart. None knows this except he who has actually experienced it.

Each and every time the love grows stronger, the chest ends up expanding and alleviating further. It doesn’t become constrained except when [the slave] sees those who are idle and inactive concerning this affair, because seeing them sores his eyes [i.e. upsets him] and mixing with them agitates his soul.
