[3/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is knowledge. For it truly alleviates the chest, expanding it until it becomes more expansive than the whole world. As for ignorance, it brings about tightening, confinement and repression.

So whenever the knowledge of the servant broadens, his chest likewise broadens and expands. However, this is not applicable to all fields of knowledge. Rather, it is [specific] to the bequeathed knowledge left by the Messenger ﷺ, which is the beneficial form of knowledge.

Therefore, its people [i.e. the people of knowledge] possess the most alleviated chests amongst humankind, the most expansive of hearts among them, the best of them in character, of those living the pleasantest of lives.

[2/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

Likewise, from among them [i.e. the causes that alleviate the chest] is the light that Allah casts in to the heart of the slave. It is the light of imaan, for indeed it alleviates and widens the chest and brings joy to the heart.

So if this light is lost from the heart of the slave, it [i.e. his heart] becomes narrow and uneasy. He [i.e. the slave] ends up in the most constricted and difficult of prisons.

Indeed At-Tirmidhi narrated in his Al-Jaami’, from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:

“إذا دَخَلَ النور القلبَ، انْفَسَحَ وانشرحَ». قالوا: وما عَلاَمَةُ ذَلِكَ يَا رسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قال: «الإنَابَةُ إلى دارِ الخُلُودِ، والتَجَافِي عَنْ دَارِ الغُرُورِ، والاسْتِعْدادُ للمَوْتِ قَبْلَ نُزوله”.

“If light enters the heart, it [i.e. the heart] widens and becomes alleviated”. They said: “And what is the sign of that O Allah’s Messenger”? He said: “The [desire for] returning to the abode of eternity, forsaking the abode of delusion and preparing for death before its arrival”.

So the slave receives that degree of alleviation to his chest in accordance to the degree of light that he receives. Likewise, concerning perceivable light and perceivable darkness; the former alleviates the chest and the latter constricts it.

[1/9] Remedying the heavy and tight chest – Ibn Al-Qayyim

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahu Allah – said:

The greatest cause of alleviating the chest is tawheed. In accordance to the degree of its perfection, strength and increase does the person’s chest proportionately experience that alleviation. Allah The Most High has said:

﴿أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلإسْلامِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِّنْ رَبِّه﴾ [الزمر: 22]

Can he whose chest Allah has opened up to Islam and who is thus upon a light from his Lord (be likened to one who is not like that)? [Az-Zumar: 22]

And He – The Most High – said:

﴿فَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلإسْلاَمِ وَمَن يُرِدْ أَن يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَـيِّقًا حَرَجاً كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِي السَّمَاءِ﴾ [الأنعام: 125]

Thus, whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his chest to Islam; and whomsoever He wills to let go astray, He causes his chest to become strait and constricted, as if he is being raised into the sky. [Al-An’aam: 125]

Therefore, guidance and tawheed are among the greatest of causes in alleviating the chest. Whereas polytheism and misguidance are among the greatest of causes in constraining and discomforting the chest.

Allah’s will is tied to His knowledge and wisdom – Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen

Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Everything [brought about] by the will of Allah is coupled with His wisdom. That is because Allah The Mighty and Majestic doesn’t simply ordain mere decrees, but rather His decree comes from His wisdom. The proof of that is His statement The Most High:

But you cannot will, unless Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise. (76:30)

His statement The Most High “Indeed, Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise” indicates that His wisdom is tied to knowledge and wisdom.

Knowledge of Allah’s names and attributes; a cause of increase in imaan – Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Among the causes that bring about increase in one’s imaan is having knowledge of Allah’s names and attributes. Whenever the slave increases in awareness of them, of their implications and effects, then imaan in His Rabb will [consequently] increase, as well as love and veneration of Him. Likewise, contemplating over the universal and legislative signs, whenever the slave observes them, pondering over their amazing power and their superb wisdom (of Allah demonstrated within them), then his imaan will without doubt increase.

Fat’h Rabb Al-Bariyyah bi-talkhees Al-Hamawiyyah, p.104

Acts of obedience; a cause of increase in imaan – Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Among the causes that bring about an increase in imaan is performing acts of obedience in order to draw closer to Allah The Most High. For indeed imaan then increases by it, in accordance to the excellence of the deed, it’s type and the amount performed. Hence, the better a deed is performed, the greater will be the increase of imaan.

The excellence of a deed is by the ikhlaas [sincerity] and mutaaba’ah [being in agreement with the Sunnah] that it has.

As for the type of deed performed, then indeed obligatory deeds are superior than voluntary ones. Likewise, some acts of obedience are emphasised more than others. Whenever an act of obedience is superior, the resulting increase of imaan will thus be greater.

Greater need for humility of the heart than of the limbs – Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen

Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Humility of the heart is in greater need of being observed than humility of the limbs. That is because the one who has awe of Allah in his heart is [consequently] more observant of Allah The Mighty and Majestic and of His rights.

Hence, it is necessary for humility of the heart to be paid attention to more than humility of the limbs. It is possible for any individual to practise humility of the limbs, even inside his house. Everyone is able to stand praying motionlessly [out of apparent humility], however having a heart that is heedless. Therefore, it [the heart] is the basis. It is that that requires a person to pay attention to, taking constant and absolute care of it.

Tafsir Surah Yasin, p.36.

Consequences of Argumentation – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen – Rahimahullaah – said:

There isn’t a person (on the most part) who is prone to argumentation except that he becomes deprived from the blessing of knowledge. Because in general the one who argues desires by that to only support his own statement and by way of that becomes deprived from the blessing of knowledge.
As for the one who desires the truth, then indeed the truth is easy and attainable. It doesn’t require great debates, as it is clear.
Because of this you find that those people of innovation who debate in favour of their innovations, their fields of knowledge lack blessing, having no good to it. And you’ll find them arguing and debating and then arriving at nothing. They do not end up reaching the truth.

Truly honouring the Prophet – Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen – Rahimahullaah – said:

If you wish to honour The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم with the form of honour that he deserves عليه الصلاة والسلام then execute his commands and refrain from matters that he has prohibited in everything that you say and do. By way of that you will become one who has honoured The Messenger of Allah

Causes of decrease in Eemaan – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen – Rahimahullaah – said:

Among the causes of decrease in imaan is ignorance concerning Allah The Most High. (Ignorance) of His names and attributes, as well as inattention and disregard towards contemplating over His universal and legislative laws. For indeed that is what results in (either) sickness of the heart or it’s death, due to doubts and desires overwhelming it (i.e. the heart). Likewise perpetrating sins decreases one’s imaan, in accordance to the type of sin commited, the degree of the sin, laxity concerning it, as well as the strength or weakness of the factors that invite one to it.
