The Middle Path Regarding The Day of Aashooraa – [Neither The Bidah of The Raafidah Nor The Deeds Innovated By Other People of Bidah] [PDF]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

shaikhul_Islaam (1)

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] was asked about what some people do on the day of Aashooraa, such as:

Applying kohl and Hena, shaking hands, taking a bath, preparing food such barley and other grains, and manifesting happiness; are there any authentic hadeeth from the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] regarding this or not? If there are none, then would this be considered bidah or not? As for what is done by the other group, such as mourning, manifesting grief, deliberately making oneself thirsty and scarring oneself, wailing, reciting [poems] and fainting as a result of that and slapping the cheeks, do these actions have a basis in the religion or not?

Answer: All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, Lord of the Aalameen. No authentic hadeeth from the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi sallam] has been reported in this regard nor from his companions; neither any of the Imaams of [ahlus sunnah] have declared this to be recommended nor the four Imaams [Abu Haneefah, Maalik, Ahmad and Shaafi’ee]; neither have the scholars- those who authored and compiled the books that are relied upon due to their authenticity- reported anything authentic or weak regarding this from the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], nor from the Sahaabah and the Taabi’een; neither in the authentic books of hadeeth nor in the Sunan, nor in the [compilations such as Musnad Ahmad and other compilations similar to it]. The virtuous first three generations of Islaam knew nothing about these narrations.

However, some of those who came after the first three virtuous generations of Islaam have narrated reports related to this, such as: ‘’Whoever applies kohl on the day of Aashooraa, he will not be sore-eyed in that year’’; ‘’Whoever bathes on the day of Aashooraa, he will not become sick in that year.’’ They also transmitted reports regarding the virtue of prayer on the day of Aashooraa; and that Aadam’s [alayhis salaam] repentance [i.e. after eating from the tree he was forbidden] took place on the day of Aashooraa; and that it was the day Nuh’s [alayhis salaam] ark settled on mount Judi; and that it was the day Ya’qoob [alayhis salaam] reunited with Yoosuf [alayhis salaam]; and that it was the day Ibraaheem [alayhis salaam] was saved from the fire etc They also narrated fabricated reports and lies attributed to the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] that he said, “Whoever gives [generously] to his family on the day of Aashooraa, Allaah will give him [generously] throughout the year.” All these reports are lies attributed to Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]. [1]

There emerged an ignorant and transgressing group [i.e. the Shia Rawaafid]-they are either disbelieving hypocrites or misguided straying ones. They manifested a (so called) allegiance to the Prophet’s household and took Ashoorah as a day of mourning, sadness and wailing (i.e. due to the murder of Husayn-radiyallaahu-anahu). They manifest the acts of the days of pre-Islamic ignorance (on this day of Ashoorah) by slapping the cheeks, tearing their clothes and calling to the slogans of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance and disbelief. However, that which Allaah and His Messenger commanded when new calamities occur is that (one) exercises patience, hoping for the reward of Allaah, recalling one’s faults and repenting, as Allaah (The Most High) said:

But give glad tidings to As-Saabireen (the patient ones, etc.). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” They are those on whom are the Salaam (i.e. blessings, etc.) (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones. [Soori Al-Baqarah: Ayaan: 55-57]

And it has been reported in the Saheehayn (Bukhaari and Muslim) from the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) that he said: ‘’He is not from us, he who slaps his cheeks, tears his cloths and calls to the slogans of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.’’ [2]

They also recite poems that convey sadness and narrate reports that contain a lot of lies.  As for the truth in them, it only renews their [exaggerated and misguided manner of grieving], bigoted allegience, incitement to hatred and war, initiating trials between the people of Islaam by way of that and as a means of reviling those who were foremost to enter into the fold of Islaam [i.e. the Sahaabah of Badr]. The evil of these people [i.e. the raafidah] and their harm on the people of Islaam cannot even be expressed by an eloquent man.

However, they [i.e. Raafidah] are opposed by another people – a people who are either Nawaasib [i.e. those who hate the family of the Prophet] or ignoramuses; so, they oppose the corruption of the [Shia Raafidah] with another type of corruption, lies with other lies, evil with another type of evil, and bidah with another type of bidah. They fabricate poems that convey rejoice and happiness on the day of Aashooraa, apply kohl, dye their clothes with a different colour, spend more on their families and cook food they do not normally cook. So, these people take the day of Aashooraa as an occasion similar to the occasions of celebrations and happiness [i.e. such as the two eeds]. On the other hand, the Raafidah take it as a day of mourning, grief and pain [i.e. inflicting injuries on themselves]. Both groups are mistaken and have exited the authentic sunnah in this affair.

As for all the other deeds [i.e. the deeds innovated and specified on the day of Aashoraa], such as making food that is not normally made based on the customs of the people – be it grains or other than them, renewing one’s clothing, spending more on [families etc], performing a specific act of worship, such a prayer specified on the day of [Aashooraa], making an intention to offer a sacrifice, preserving the meat of the slaughtered animals to cook it with grains, applying kohl, dying one’s clothing, taking a bath, shaking hands, visiting one another, visiting mosques, [so called] sacred places and other than that, all these deeds are evil and innovations in the religion. Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] never legislated these deeds [on the day of Aashooraa] nor the rightly guided Khulafaa, nor did any of the Imaams of the Muslims, such as Maalik, Ath-Thawree, Al-Layth Bin Sa’d, Abu Haneefah, Al-Awzaa’ee, Ash-Shaafi’ee, Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Ishaaq Bin Raahawayh. [4] Excerpts from Shaikh Muqbil’s Book Titled ‘Ilhaadul Khumeini Fee Ardil Haramayn’ – [Meaning of the [Term] Raafidah And a Brief Acquaintance With Their Idiotic Behaviour] [PDF]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

raafidah4

The Raafidah: They are those who rejected Zaid Bin Ali [rahimahullaah]. They asked him about AbuBakr and Umar [radiyallaahu-anhumaa], so he invoked Allaah’s mercy for both of them; they said, ‘Then, we have rejected you’.  So, Zaid [rahimahullaah] said to them, ‘’Go, for you are rejecters.’’

Idiotic [or Ridiculous] Behaviour

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] mentioned in his tremendous book ‘Minhaajus Sunnah Vol: 1 page 13: And from the idiotic behaviour of the [Raafidah] is that they make a similitude of one they are angry with, for example they choose a female sheep that is reddish in colour because Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] was named Al-Humayraa’u (Ref 1) [i.e. one reddish in complexion]. So, they regard this female sheep to be Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] and punish it by pulling its hair and other than that. And they consider this to be punishment for Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa].

(Ref 1)- Al-Humayraa’u: The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] referred to Aa’isha [radiayllaahu-anhaa] as Al-Humayraa’u and this is found in a hadith narrated by Abee Salamah [radiyallaahu-anhu] and reported by An-Nasaa’ee in Sunan Al-Kub’raa’ Hadith Number:8951.  Shaikh Al-Albaanee [rahimahullaah] says this Hadeeth is authentic and all its narrators are Thiqaat (trustworthy) [See: Silsilah Al-Hadeeth As-Saheehah; Hadith Number: 3277]

Hafidh Ibn Hajr says that this hadith is Saheeh. See Fathul Baaree under chapter: ‘Al-Hiraab Wad-Darq Yaumul Eed’.  He also says that the other narrations containing this word ‘Al-Humaraa’u’ are weak, but only this one reported by An-Nasaa-ee [rahimahullaah] on the authority of Abee Salamah [radiyallaahu-anhu] is authentic.

Some of them [i.e. Raafidah] would name two donkeys amongst the millstone donkeys- one Abu Bakr and the other Umar; then they would punish these two donkeys and consider it to be punishment for Abu Bakr and Umar [radiyallaahu-anhumaa].

And at times they [i.e. Raafidah] write the names of Abu Bakr and Umar [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] under their feet, so one of the Muslim rulers began to beat the feet of those who did so, whilst saying, ‘’Rather, I am beating Abu Bakr and Umar’’, and he did not stop beating their [feet] until it became paralyzed.

Amongst them [i.e. Raafidah] is one who names his dogs AbuBakr and Umar, and then curses them. And amongst them is the one that when his dog is named Bakeer, he beats the [person] who gave it that name and says, ‘’You name my dog with the name of the inhabitants of the fire.’’

And amongst them [i.e. Raafidah] are those who extol Abu LuLu’a Al-Majoosee Al-Kaafir [The fire worshipper], who was a slave of Mugheerah Bin Shubah [radiyallaahu-anhu] when he killed Umar Ibnul Khattaab [radiyallaahu-anhu]. They extol Abu LuLu’a for killing Umar, [even though] he is a disbelieving fire worshipper based on the consensus of the scholars.

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Raafidah3PDF

Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] said:

And they (Arab pagans) wonder that a warner (Prophet Muhammad) has come to them from among themselves! And the disbelievers say: ‘This (Prophet Muhammad) is a sorcerer, a liar.   Has he made the aaliha (gods) (all) into One Ilaah (God – Allaah). Verily, this is a curious thing!’ And the leaders among them went about (saying): “Go on and remain constant to your aaliha (gods)! Verily, this is a thing designed (against you)! We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention!  Has the Reminder been sent down to him (alone) from among us?” Nay! but they are in doubt about My Reminder (this Qur’aan)! Nay, but they have not tasted (My) Torment! [Soorah Saad; Ayah:4-8]

So, you say to the Raafidah: Indeed, it is shirk to call upon other than Allaah with regards to seeking benefit and seeking protection from harm regarding a matter which none can [fulfil] except Allaah.  It is not permissible to call upon Ali Ibn Abee Taalib [radiyallaahu-anhu] or other than him amongst the dead [may Allaah have mercy upon them], because Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmeer (the thin membrane over the date stone).  If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything).  O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allaah, but Allaah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all praise.’ [Soorah Faatir; Ayah:13-14]

And Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said:

‘And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allaah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?  And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping.’ [Soorah Ahqaaf. Aayah:5-6]

And Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said:

‘And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allaah, any other ilaah (god), of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! Al-Kaafiroon (the disbelievers in Allaah and in the Oneness of Allaah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters, etc.) will not be successful.’ [Soorah Muminoon; Ayah:117]

And if you say, ‘’Indeed others have joined them (i.e. the Mushrikoon) in this (affair)’’, so I say, ‘’Whoever joins them in this (affair of shirk) is similar to them.’  Allaah said:

And invoke not besides Allaah, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers).  And if Allaah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’ [Soorah Yoonus; Ayah:106-107]

When you relate these verses and their likes to the (Rawaafid), and then say to them, ‘’Indeed, is it permissible to call upon the dead and seek deliverance and rescue from them?’’  They (reply), ‘’You are a Wahhaabi; you hate the family of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam).’’

This is the same (affair) with the extreme Soofees; when you say, ‘’Indeed, the awliyaa can neither benefit nor harm’, they (soofees) say, ‘you hate the awliyaa.’’

Indeed, Mighty is the word that comes out of the mouths of these two sects; they utter nothing but a lie.

The Muhaddith of Yemen Abee Abdir Rahmaan Muqbil Bin Haadee Al-Waadi’ee [rahimahullaah] stated in his Book titled: Al-Ilhaadul Khumeini Fee Ardil Haramayn, from page 197: Resemblance of the Raafidah to those [sects amongst the] Yahood and Nasaaraa Who Exceeded the Limits [i.e. those Yahood and Nasaaraa who tampered with the scriptures, innovated and distorted the path of Moosaa, Eesaa and other Prophets [alayhismus salaam] and worshipped them besides Allaah]

Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] said:

‘Surely, they have disbelieved who say: “Allaah is the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary).” But the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)] said: “O Children of Israel! Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the (polytheists and wrong doers) there are no helpers.’  ‘Surely, disbelievers are those who said: “Allaah is the third of the three (in a Trinity).” But there is no ilaah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilaah (God -Allaah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them.’  Will they not repent to Allaah and ask His Forgiveness? For Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [Maryam (Mary)] was a Siddeeqah [i.e. she believed in the words of Allaah and His Books (see Verse 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while Allaah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to them, yet look how they are deluded away (from the truth). Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “How do you worship besides Allaah something which has no power either to harm or to benefit you? But it is Allaah Who is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.” Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayaat 72-77]

And [The Exalted] said:

‘O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allaah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allaah and His Word, (“Be!” – and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Rooh) created by Him; so, believe in Allaah and His Messengers. Say not: “Three (trinity)!” Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allaah is (the only) One Ilaah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allaah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.’ [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 171]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

‘And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allaah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allaah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allaah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth! They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Tauraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilaah (God – Allaah) Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)[. Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).”[Surah At-Tawbah. Aayaat 30-31]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

‘It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allaah has given the Book and Al-Hukma (the knowledge and understanding of the laws of religion, etc.) and Prophethood to say to the people: “Be my worshippers rather than Allaah’s.” On the contrary (he would say): “Be you Rabbaniyun (learned men of religion who practise what they know and also preach others), because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it.  Nor would he order you to take angels and Prophets for lords (gods)]. Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted to Allaah’s Will? [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayaat 79-80]

Amongst them [i.e. the Rawaafid] are those who say that their Imaams will return after death; and from them are those who claim that some of their Imaams are infallible; and amongst them are those who say that Ali [radiyallaahu-anhu] can bring back the dead to life; and amongst them is one who says that he walks on the sea.. Ali, Hasan, Husain Muhammad Bin Hanafiyyah, Ali Bin Husain, Hasan Bin Hasan, Muhammad Bin Ali Bin Husain, Jafar Bin Muhammad, Zaid Bin Ali and those who follow their path from the family of the Prophet free themselves from these false [claims] and its proponents.

And know that the Raafidah were not called Raafidah except from that time they rejected Zaid Bin Ali; however, the path of the Raafidah is that of their predecessor Abdullaah Bin Sabah and those who followed his path of deafness, dumbness and blindness – those who do not possess understanding.

Ali [radiyallaahu-anhu] Rejects the Exaggeration of The Rawaafid

Imaam Ahmad Bin Amr Bin Abee Aasim said in his book ‘As-Sunnah, Vol:2 page476 that Ali [radiyallaahu-anhu] said: ‘Verily a people will love me until they enter the hell fire because of me; and verily a people will hate me until they enter the hell fire due to their hatred of me’ [1]

Shaykh Rabee: Where is the Action?

Shaykh Rabee (hafidahullāh) in a treatise addressing the current state of the Muslims and the Muslim ummah, exhorted the Muslims to return to following the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam), as this is the cure to rectifying the ailments of Muslims in all aspects of their lives, he (hafidahullāh) asks us,

Where is tawheed in our lives?
Where is the correct aqīdah?
Where is the correct manhaj?
Where is the action upon the knowledge we have learnt?

He (hafidahullāh) also said,

“We memorise (the Qurān), and memorising is sought after, however where is the action, where is the action?

Does the Qurān not call us to unity?!
Does it not call us to holding tight to the Book and the Sunnah?!
Does it not call us to abandon falsehood?!
Does it not call us to abandon innovations?!
Does it not call us to fight against shirk and misguidance?!”

The Salafis And Looking Into The Affairs of The Ummah – By Shaikh Rabee [hafidhahullaah]

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee (may Allaah preserve him) said:

So it is not permissible for the Ulamaa to remain heedless of their plans (i.e. the enemies of Islaam), their actions, their publications, their missionary activities and their various calls (to the Muslims). And also the various poisons they are infusing – which are in opposition to the Qur’aan and the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) and his Sunnah. And nor of what plans they have for (the destruction of) the beliefs and methodologies of Islaam. It is not permissible either, to remain heedless of their concentrated efforts to Christianize or secularize the Muslim youth. And along with that, the Muslim youth and the students are not able to oppose this plan and strategy. Rather it is necessary that the distinguished Ulamaa – those who are experienced and shrewd – it is for such people, in all the places to undertake this duty. So it is obligatory for some of the intelligent and ingenious people from the field of ‘Aqeedah to be mobilised for opposing these plans. And likewise it is a must that the intelligent and distinguished from amongst the specialists in the Sunnah – that they be mobilised for the refutation of these –and similarly the eminent and distinguished from amongst those in the fields of Orientalism for the refutation of the plans of the Orientalists.” (Ahl ul-Hadeeth, p.102)

He also says: “I myself believe that it is a benefit – rather it is of necessity – that we know what the enemies are planning for us, and that it is necessary for us to prepare (ourselves in strength) to destroy their plans. However, I do not exaggerate in this matter, rather my view is the view of our Ulamaa’ and they have all agreed upon this – that amongst the obligatory matters there are some that are Fard ‘Ain and others that are Fard Kifaayah – and even if knowing the state of the enemies is harmful – it is still necessary for us to know it – but it is treated as Fard Kifaayah. When some attend to it, then the harm is removed from the rest…” up until he said: “…So I consider that there is no criticism for the Ulamaa and the students of knowledge who take great concern for preserving the Sharee’ah of Allaah – in terms of the Book, the Sunnah and its understanding – for this is one of the duties of the Kifaayah actions. And I believe that these people are more superior, noble, truthful and of more benefit to Islaam than those who are weak in their knowledge of the religion of Allaah or those who have no share in acquainting themselves with it.”[An excerpt from an article at www.salafipublications.com titled: The Salafis and Looking into the Affairs of the Ummah]
