Why Does My Prayer not Prevent me from Evil Actions – Shaykh Uthaymeen

I pray, however I (still) perform some evil actions; so, what is your advice for me? And why does my prayer not prevent me from forbidden actions?

Shaykh Uthaymeen Replies:

My advice for you is that you repent to Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) and that you sincerely draw close to Allah. (Likewise) that you recall the greatness of the one you have disobeyed and recall His punishment (The Mighty and Majestic), for whoever opposes his command.

You should also read the statement of Allah,

Declare (O Muhammad SAW) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful. (49) And that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment. (50)

So, seek Allah’s forgiveness and mercy and fear his punishment. As for your situation, i.e. that you pray and you prayer does not prevent you from evil actions, then perhaps your prayer has deficiencies, because the prayer which prevents from fahshaa (i.e. great sins) and munkar (everything Islam rejects & has prohibited) is the complete prayer, (meaning) the prayer which is (performed) in accordance to that which the Messenger of Allah came with; with presence of heart, performing the actions (of the prayer) as they were reported in the sunnah. It is not every prayer which prevents from fahshaa (i.e. great sins) and munkar (every thing Islam censures & has forbidden ), rather it is the established prayer (in the sunnah) which the people perform in the manner which is befitting.

Allah The Most High said:

﴿اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ إِنَّ الصَّلاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ﴾ [العنكبوت:45]

Recite (O Muhammad (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qur’ân), and perform As-Salât (Iqamât¬as¬Salât). Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahshâ’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed).

Meaning, the prayer which is performed in the correct manner (according to the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah), prevents these evils.

(1) The questioner is alluding to this aayah in the Quran: Al-Ankaboot: 45

[34b] Excerpts from Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’-[Some Consequences of Bad Bahaviour Towards The Scholars And One’s Companions]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Abdullaah Ibn Al-Mubaarak [rahimahullaah] said: Whoever belittles the [upright] scholars will ruin his religion; whoever belittles the rulers will ruin his worldly affairs and whoever belittles his [Muslim] brothers will ruin his Muroo’ah [i.e. behaviour that either conforms to the Sharee’ah or behaviour of the people of a particular nation, tribe, clan or culture which is not in opposition to the Sharee’ah and is considered -by them- to be noble, befitting, praiseworthy  etc]. [Ref 1]

O my brothers! Therefore, let us behave in a good manner, especially the students of knowledge. O my brothers! At present the connection between a student and his teacher is limited to the classroom. He listens to the lesson and after it finishes, he leaves in a hurry. It is as if he does not know anything about the teacher- neither in a house nor in any other place. And [then] they say: The scholars run away from the students!! It is obligated on the students to behave well towards the scholars and to come to their houses. Do they want the scholars to run behind the students?! The Salaf did not know this [type] of behaviour; [however] when we became deprived of good manners, we expect the scholars to be our followers. Many people want the scholars to be their followers – giving directions to the scholars like they would give directions to a senile old person. A particular scholar can meet thousands of people [i.e. in a specific place] and benefit them, but as for going to the house of every person and knocking at his door, this is neither legislated by Allaah nor is it obligated on the scholars.

Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ pages 123-124. Abridged and slightly paraphrased

Verdict of The Salaf On Music – Muhammad Ibn Al-Hanafiyyah and Mujaahid

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَشۡهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِٱللَّغۡوِ مَرُّواْ ڪِرَامً۬ا

”And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity.” [25:72]

Muhammad Ibn Al-Hanafiyyah [rahimahullaah] said: In this (Ayah) falsehood means music. This is [also] what Layth [rahimahullaah] reported from Mujaahid [rahimahullaah]. Al-Kalbiy [rahimahullaah] said: They do not attend gatherings of falsehood. Az-Zujaaj [rahimahullaah] said: They do not sit with the sinful people.

A Wise Man Never Engages In Fruitless Debate, Rather He Only Conveys Wisdom- By Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Imaam Al-Barbahaaree [rahimahullaah] said that Al-Hasan [al-Basree] said, ‘The wise man does not argue or seek to overcome with stratagem rather he propagates his wisdom.  If it is accepted, he praises Allah and if it is rejected he praises Allah'[1]

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] commented on the above statement saying: Concerning the statement of Imaam Barbahaaree that Hasan al-Basree said: ‘The wise man does not argue or seek to overcome with stratagem….’

Al-Hasan Al-Basree:  He is Al-Hasan Ibnu Abil Hasan Al-Basree the well-known Imaam from amongst the Taaýbiýeen. He said: ‘’The wise man’, that is the one who possesses wisdom, and wisdom is to place something in its [proper] place.  Likewise, the wise one means the one with understanding.

Therefore, two meanings are intended by Al-Hakeem (the wise one); the first intended meaning is one who places the affairs in their [proper] place and it is also intended to mean the one who has understanding, because wisdom is understanding and knowledge of what is intended by Allah and His Messenger [i.e. the understanding of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger].

‘He does not argue; he does not debate [with] a fruitless debate that is devoid of benefit. ‘’He does not seek to overcome with stratagem; he does not seek to overcome the people of falsehood with stratagem and to make them submit.  ‘His wisdom’, that is he propagates his knowledge and if accepted he praises Allah.  This is what is sought after.  And if it [i.e. his knowledge/wisdom] is not accepted, he is absolved of his responsibility and the proof is conveyed.

And concerning the statement, ‘He praises Allah’ because he established and conveyed the proof, and fulfilled that which is required of him, and the guiding of the hearts is in the hands of Allah (Glorified and Exalted Be He). [2]
