Rectification of The Souls And The Contemporary Sciences – [A Brief Admonition By Imaam As-Sadi]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Sadi [rahmahullaah] said:

Indeed, it is impossible to rectify the souls and acquire virtue solely through the worldly sciences. Experience and clearly witnessed circumstances are the greatest proofs regarding this affair, because despite its advancement and vastness, it has been unable to nurture and rectify the souls [i.e. upon excellent traits, manners, dealings, characteristics, sound creed etc] which are the determinants of [sound] rectification and success. What the Religion of Islaam propagates is that which is entrusted with this rectification. It is what will guide the thoughts towards the truthful and authentic sources of knowledge, guide the actions of the people towards good and prevent them from evil. Islam is The Rectifier of the Creeds and Manners. It is the thing that cultivates the thoughts [upon righteousness], urges towards virtuousness and prevents from depravity.

The essence of that which the religion calls to – regarding belief in the Unseen, which includes belief in Allaah and that which He possesses of Names, Attributes and Actions of perfection; belief in Angels, belief in recompense for one’s good and bad deeds in this life and the next, which cannot be known except through the Messengers- is what acquaints a person with the fact that rectification – in reality – is not possible through other than sound belief and the religion of Islaam.

Therefore, even if the worldly sciences rectify [some] affairs based upon that which [some] people know in detail, it will still not be equal [in perfection, excellence etc] to the knowledge of the Messengers [in the least]. It will neither reach that which is reached through the knowledge of the Messengers nor can it influence the souls in the way in which the knowledge of the Messengers has done; for indeed the souls do not voluntarily submit except through belief in Allaah, belief in His Angels, belief in His Books, belief in His Messengers and belief in the hereafter.  And without this, voluntary submission is impossible, as is well known regarding human nature. [Ref 1]

The Correct Manner In Which We Should Approach The Contemporary Sciences

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [rahimahullaah] said:

Indeed, that which is stated by the astronomers about the celestial bodies, their sizes and the distance between them, and that which is said about the earth [i.e. by the geologists etc] is categorized into three affairs:

[1] That which is backed by the sound knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the Sharee’ah], therefore it is accepted.

[2] That which the knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the sharee’ah] declares to be false, therefore it is rejected.

[3] That which there is no proof to either accept or reject it, therefore it is unproven until a person from the people of knowledge [i.e. upright scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] examines it [i.e. examines what it indicates based on the Book and Sunnah] to show whether it should be accepted or rejected. As for accepting it without [sound] investigation and observation, but merely accepting it by blindly following them [i.e. the astronomers, geologists etc], then this is impermissible because of the numerous mistakes that occur as a result of that, and speaking -without knowledge – about Allaah and that which He has created [i.e. the entire universe and all that is within it] [Ref 2]

An Important Approach Towards The Contemporary Sciences-[Brief Clarifications By Shaikh Uthaymeen, Shaikh Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz and Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said: We do not say: “We do not give consideration to anything stated by the people in the subject matter regarding medicine, astronomy and the celestial bodies”; however, we do not accept everything they say. If what they say opposes the Book and the [authentic] Sunnah, then indeed we do not accept their statements; [rather] we take [i.e. believe and affirm without any doubt] that which is conveyed in the Book and the [authentic] Sunnah, and we say, ‘An era will come in which the people will bear witness to the falsity of those statements of theirs – at present – that are in opposition to the Book and [authentic] Sunnah and [bear witness] to the soundness of that which has been conveyed in the Book and the [authentic] Sunnah. [End of quote. Ref 1]

The Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said: Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop [of water, semen], then he is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period…. [An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth. Hadeeth 4]

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [hafidhahullaah] said: It is well known that during that era, the Sahaabah did not know these stages [of development of the human being in the womb] through experimental knowledge, vision [i.e. by way of the naked eye] or other than that; rather it was simply [a statememt of the Prophet] which they [believed and affirmed]. They were scholars by way of the revelation sent down to the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and not by way of experimentation [examination]. [Ref 2]

Few Admonitions That Reminds Us of The Fact That Distinction Between Truth And Falsehood Is Not Merely Based On What The Majority Agree With or Reject-  [Admonitions By Imaam As-Sadi, Imaam Ibnul Qayyim and Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And indeed We bestowed grace on David from Us (saying): ‘’O you mountains. Glorify (Allah) with him! And you birds (also)! And We made the iron soft for him.’’ Saying: ‘’Make you perfect coats of mail, balancing well the rings of chain armour, and work you (men) righteousness. Truly, I am All-Seer of what you do.’’ And to Solomon (We subjected) the wind, its morning (stride from sunrise till midnoon) was a month’s (journey), and its afternoon (stride from the midday decline of the sun to sunset) was a month’s (journey i.e. in one day he could travel two months’ journey). And We caused a fount of (molten) brass to flow for him, and there were jinns that worked in front of him, by the Leave of his Lord, and whosoever of them turned aside from Our Command, We shall cause him to taste of the torment of the blazing Fire. They worked for him what he desired, (making) high rooms, images, basins as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places). ‘’Work you, O family of Dawud (David), with thanks!’’ But few of My slaves are grateful. [Surah Sabah. Aayaat 10-13]

[ٱعۡمَلُوٓاْ ءَالَ دَاوُ ۥدَ شُكۡرً۬اۚ وَقَلِيلٌ۬ مِّنۡ عِبَادِىَ ٱلشَّكُورُ – Work you, O family of Dawud (David), with thanks! But few of My slaves are grateful]-Meaning: The majority of Mankind are neither grateful to Allaah for the blessings bestowed on them nor are they grateful due to the punishments that are repelled from them. As for Shukr [gratefulness], it is the heart’s acknowledgement of Allaah’s blessings and to utilise those blessings in obedience to Allaah and not in disobedience.[Source: An Excerpt from ‘Tayseer Al-kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam Al-Mannaan’. Slightly paraphrased]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Is it not clear to those who inherit the earth in succession from its (previous) possessors, that had We willed, We would have punished them for their sins. And We seal up their hearts so that they hear not? Those were the towns whose story We relate unto you (O Muhammad). And there came indeed to them their Messengers with clear proofs, but they were not such as to believe in that which they had rejected before. Thus Allah does seal up the hearts of the disbelievers (from each and every kind of religious guidance). And most of them We found not (true) to their covenant, but most of them We found indeed Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayaat 100-102]

Is it not clear to those who inherit the earth in succession from its (previous) possessors, that had We willed, We would have punished them for their sins. And We seal up their hearts so that they hear not?]- Meaning: Allaah [The Most High] informs those who inherit the earth -in succession- from those who preceded them that He [The Most High] destroyed their forefathers due to their sins, yet they [i.e. the inheritors] commit the same sins that were committed by their forefathers! Do they not take heed that had Allaah willed He would punish them due to their sins, for this is the manner in which Allaah deals with mankind – both the previous nations and those who inherited the earth after them.

Allaah [The Most High] warned those who inherited the earth from the previous nations, but they did not take heed; Allaah sent them reminders but they did not reflect; Allaah showed them guidance through signs [i.e. revelations through the Prophets and Messengers, as well as miracles within universe and themselves] but they did not follow guidance, so Allaah punished them by sealing their hearts – neither did truth enter their hearts nor did good reach their hearts; nor did they give an attentive ear [to the truth]; rather they only heard that which established the proofs against them.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says:

Those were the towns whose story We relate unto you (O Muhammad). And there came indeed to them their Messengers with clear proofs, but they were not such as to believe in that which they had rejected before. Thus Allah does seal up the hearts of the disbelievers (from each and every kind of religious guidance)]- Meaning: Messengers came and called them to that which will lead them to happiness [in the life and the next]; and those Messengers were given manifest signs and clear evidences to clarify the truth, but the people did not listen and thus were not benefited. And because they belied those manifest signs and clear proofs after being well aware of them, Allaah [The Most High] prevented them from accepting the sound and infallible creed ordained by Him. This was punishment on them because they rejection the truth, just as Allaah [The Most High] said in Surah Al-An’aam Ayah 110:

[وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفۡـِٔدَتَہُمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرَهُمۡ كَمَا لَمۡ يُؤۡمِنُواْ بِهِۦۤ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ۬ وَنَذَرُهُمۡ فِى طُغۡيَـٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ – And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time, and We shall leave them in their trespass to wander blindly].

Then Allaah [The Most High] said:

[وَمَا وَجَدۡنَا لِأَڪۡثَرِهِم مِّنۡ عَهۡدٍ۬‌ۖ وَإِن وَجَدۡنَآ أَڪۡثَرَهُمۡ لَفَـٰسِقِينَ  –  And most of them We found not (true) to their covenant, but most of them We found indeed Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)]-Meaning: The majority of the nations-to whom Allaah [The Most High] sent Messengers-were not true to their covenant. Neither were they steadfast nor did they adhere to the commands of Allaah; nor did they submit obediently to the commands of Allaah which the Messengers ordered them to obey; rather they followed their desires, except a very few of them. The majority of them turned away from guidance out of arrogance, so Allaah sent them various types of punishment. [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Tayseer Al-kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam al-Mannaan’. Slightly paraphrased]

Allaah [The Most High] said in Surah Saad Aayah 24:

وَإِنَّ كَثِيرً۬ا مِّنَ ٱلۡخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبۡغِى بَعۡضُہُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

‘’And, verily, many partners oppress one another, except those who believe and do righteous good deeds.’’

Meaning: Because oppression is one of those habits [i.e. evil habits] of the soul. [ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ – Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds]; because their Eemaan and [eagerness to perform] righteous deeds prevents them from committing oppression. [وَقَلِيلٌ۬ مَّا هُمۡ – And they are few]. [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Tayseer Al-Kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer kalaam al-Mannaan’ slightly paraphrased]

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [rahimahullaah] said:

Let every Muslim be careful of being deceived by the great numbers [of people upon such and such idea, view, belief, way of life etc], whilst saying: ‘’Indeed, the people have become such and such, and have become accustomed to such and such, so I am with them’’. This is a great calamity, for indeed many people of the past were destroyed due to this [i.e. blindly following the majority]. Therefore, O sensible one! It is obligated on you to examine yourself; take account of yourself and adhere to the truth, even if the people abandon it. Beware of what Allaah has forbidden, even if the people do it, for indeed the truth is more worthy of being followed, just as Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَإِنْ تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّه ِ -And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah’s Path. [Surah Al An-aam Ayah 116]

And Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَمَآ أَڪۡثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوۡ حَرَصۡتَ بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ-And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly] [Surah Yusuf Ayah 103] [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 12/ 412-416’. slightly paraphrased]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts there is a disease saw that the party of Allaah [i.e. the believers] were small in number and the enemies of Allaah were numerous, they thought that victory would be for those who were huge in number. Allaah [The Most High] says that the hypocrites said: [غَرَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ دِينُهُمۡ – These people (Muslims) are deceived by their religion]. [Surah Anfaal Ayah 49]. So, Allaah [Glorified be He and Free is He From all Imperfections] informed [them] that victory is achieved through placing one’s trust and reliance upon Allaah and not due to being huge in number, for indeed Allaah [The Most High] cannot be defeated; rather Allaah [The Most High] is All-Wise and He aids those who deserve help, even if they are weak. Allaah is the All-Wise and All-Mighty, and this necessitates that He will aid the party that truly relies upon Him. [Zaadul Ma’aad 3/181]

Abu Shaamah [rahimahullaah] said: When the command to adhere to the Jamaa’ah is [mentioned], then the intent behind it is to adhere to the truth, even if those who follow it are few and those who oppose it are numerous. That is because the truth is that which the first Jamaa’ah was upon- the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and his companions[radiyallaahu-anhum]- and one does not give consideration to the numerous people of falsehood. The Evil Outcomes of The Fitan – [Admonitions By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim, Shaikh Rabee and Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: Hudhaifa [radiyallaahu-anhu] reported that the Messenger of Allaah [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: “Tribulation will be presented to the hearts of people like a reed mat woven stick by stick and any heart afflicted by them will have a black mark put into it, but any heart that rejects them will have a white mark put into it. Thus there will be two kinds of hearts: one is pure like a white gemstone and it will not be harmed by any tribulation as long as the heavens and earth endure, and the other is black and dusty like a worn-out vessel, neither recognizing good nor rejecting evil, but rather immersed in its desires.” [Sahih Muslim 144]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The Fitan [tribulations] that will be presented to the hearts are the cause of their sickness; and they are the Fitan of Shahawaat [evil desires] and the Fitan of Shubuhaat [those affairs that are made to resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality]; the Fitan of Ghay and Dalaal [being led astray in knowledge and intent and misguided in knowledge and creed]; the Fitan of Ma’aasee and Bidah [disobedience and innovation in religion]; and the Fitan of Dhulm and Jahl [injustice and ignorance]. The first affair [i.e. the Fitan of Shahawaat] necessitates corruption in one’s intent and desire, and the second affair [i.e. the Fitan of Shubuhaat] necessitates corruption in one’s knowledge and creed. [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Ighaathatul Lahfaan 1/15-16. Publisher: Daar Aalimul Fawaa’id’ 1st Edition 1432AH. slightly paraphrased]

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said:

Abu Hurairah [radiyallaahu-anhu] narrated that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: ‘’Hasten towards [performance of] good deeds; [for] there will be trials which would be like a part of a dark night, wherein [i.e. during these trials] a man wakes up as a believer and becomes a disbeliever by night; or he begins the night as a believer and wakes up as a disbeliever, and a man would sell his religion for a [portion] of the worldly life [i.e. the worldly things].’’  [Saheeh Muslim Kitaab Al-Imaan number: 118]

Then the Shaikh Rabee said: The author [i.e. Imaam Al-Aajurree] pointed out that a lot of Fitan have occurred- a people were humiliated during it and also [others] were destroyed, such as the likes of Abu Muslim Al-Khurasaanee and [during] the Fitna of Ibnul Raawandee. Many Fitan have occurred and from them the Fitna of the khawaarij, the Rawaafid and killing. Deviation and misguidance have occurred – either fighting and trials [related] to politics or trials [related] to creed, methodology and what is similar to it.  Many people who were to be destroyed were destroyed  and the one whom Allaah protected was saved and [enabled] to adhere to the true methodology.

Indeed, all praises and thanks be to Allaah, many [people] were saved due to the clarity and establishment of this methodology [of the Salaf], just as the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam] promised, that “There will not cease to be a group from my Ummah manifest and upon the truth –neither being harmed by those who forsake them nor by those who oppose them until the hour is established”.

So, Allaah’s proof has been established against the people from the time Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam] was sent until the establishment of the hour. A time will not come except that His [i.e. Allaah’s] proofs are established by the inheritors of the prophets [i.e. the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah]- the people of sound knowledge, the ‘Taa-ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. victorious group] that adheres to the truth and will not depart from it until the establishment of the hour. Allaah’s proof has been established against [the people] and through them [i.e. the inheritors of the prophets, Allaah saves many people, and all the praises and thanks be to Allaah.

Therefore, during every trial, they [i.e. the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] must openly proclaim the truth and clarify it for the people. They should distinguish for them [the difference] between guidance and misguidance; between truth and falsehood; the manner in which the people will be safeguarded from these trials; the path through which they will be saved from entering into Fitan and other affairs [by way of which] Allaah [The Blessed and Most High] guides this [victorious] group when [they] face every Fitna. And indeed the author reiterated this hadeeth: ‘’A man will wake up in the morning as a Muslim and by evening he becomes a disbeliever.” He [i.e. the author] said that a people will be humiliated; Yes! A man may be upon truth, and then you do not see him thereafter except that he has become a disbeliever or a misguided innovator! This is nothing else but humiliation! He used to claim that he is upon good, a possessor of knowledge and upon the truth, but then he falls into disbelief–either Kufr Akbar or kufr Asghar. This is ignominy and Allaah’s Protection is sought. How many people have been humiliated and exposed by a trial! [Suddenly] you come to know of them and their false claims are unveiled, and their reality is clarified for you. [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Adh-Dharee’ah Ilaa Bayaan Maqaasid Kitaab Ash-Sharee’ah’ – 1/200-202. Slightly paraphrased]

Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [may Allaah preserve him] said:

‘’From the (evil) effects and consequences of Fitan (trials) is that indeed the one who enters into a Fitna (a trial) and is embroiled in it will return with destructive consequences and will not attain good. He will return with destructive consequences and evil end results, and at the same time he does not attain good. Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] studied a number of trials that took place during eras before his and scrutinized them in his book Minhaajus Sunnah – a beautiful and beneficial (scrutiny) regarding the (evil) end results of trial- and said, ‘’Few are those who rebel against the one in authority [i.e. the rulers] except that the evil that result from his actions is greater than the good outcomes’’. He [i.e. Shaikhul Islaam] mentioned many examples of Fitan that have occurred, then he summarized the end results and consequences of those Fitan and said, ‘’Neither did they establish (the) Religious affairs nor did they maintain (or preserve) the worldly affairs’’.  That is: those who embarked upon those Fitan and hastened towards them neither established  (the) religion nor maintained (or preserved) the worldly affairs because when Fitnah is unleashed, killing takes place, murder becomes rife, the people become excited, trial occurs and its evil consequences, (then) the incitement behind the trial will not bring about any good. Honest Scrutiny of Oneself: [What Made Sa’eed Weep After Sufyaan Spoke About The Righteous People?!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

One day Sufyaan Ath-Thawree [rahimahullaah] sat and spoke, whilst Sa’eed Ibn As-Saa’ib At-Taa’ifee [rahimahullaah] was present in the gathering; so Sa’eed started weeping until Sufyaan felt sorry for him. Then Sufyaan said to him, ‘O Sa’eed! What makes you weep when you heard me mentioning the good people and their deeds?’ He said, ‘O Sufyaan! What should prevent me from weeping, for when the stations of the good people are mentioned, I am not from them’. So Sufyaan said, ‘You have a right [or it is befitting that] you weep’’’.

The Best of The People Are Those Living In My Generation: [Brief Fawaa’id From This Hadeeth By Imaam An-Nawawi, Imaam Ibn Hajr, Shaikh Rabee and Shaikh Uthaymeen]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Prophet [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] said: ‘’The best of the people are those living in my generation, then those who will follow the latter and then those who come after them. Then there will come after them people who will be treacherous and will not be trustworthy, they will bear witness without being asked to do so, and they will vow, but will never fulfil their vows, and fatness will appear among them’’.

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah] said: ‘’They give false testimony, act treacherously and deceitfully. They behave in a very sinful manner and follow evil desires, except those whom Allaah safeguards amongst the Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. the aided group of Muslims upon the straight path] – those whom Allaah’s Messenger [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] praised. Therefore, it is obligated on us to acquire knowledge for the sake of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] and act upon it. Ignorance is a deadly disease and knowledge is a weapon that will destroy you if you do not act upon it, and Allaah’s refuge is sought. [Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm pages 268-270]

Imaam An-Nawawi [rahimahullaah] stated regarding the statement, ‘’They will bear witness without being asked to do so’’- This can mean that they bear witness before being asked, or they bear witness based on falsehood, or they give witness without being from those who are worthy of it.
