Unjustified Pursuit of Concessions and Mere Claim of Khilaaf! [Unbefitting a People Who Want to Be Regarded as Followers of Clear Proof]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] was asked about those who follow the legislated Islamic concessions?

He replied: The religion is an Amaanah- an amaanah between the slave and his Lord. It’s obligatory that he fulfils it (the religious duties) as Allah and his messenger have commanded. Whoever performs the obligations, refrains from the prohibited affairs, (does) that which he is able from the Mustahabbaat (recommended deeds) and abandons the Makroohaat (disliked affairs), this is the Amaanah between the slave and his lord. The concessions are only allowed when there is a need and necessity (to utilize) them. Utilize them in accordance with necessity- with a need for the concession. Just like the sick person combines between two prayers, performs Tayyamum if he cannot use water for purification and doesn’t fast in Ramadhaan (i.e. when travelling etc), and a traveler shortens the prayers. This is a religious concession used at the time of its requirement. As for using concessions in other than their correct place (i.e. situation), then this is not permissible. Allah did not permit that for him (in such situation). Indeed He (Allaah) only placed the concessions at specified times and situations, and they are not used in other than these (times and situations). Therefore, it is obligated on the Muslim that he fears Allah and that he establishes that which Allah has obligated on him. (1)

Unjustified Pursuit of Concessions

Imaam ash-Shaatibee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated regarding the attitude of unjustified pursuit of concessions, “This arises from following one’s desires. Desire leads to a ‘too easy going attitude’ and the pursuit of concessions for oneself and others. So, you see him (i.e. such person) adopting that for himself or passing that judgment for his relative or friend, which he would not do for another person, due to the desire of that relative and friend”. (2)

Imaam Ash-Shaatibee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said, “If a Mukallaf [i.e. the sane one who has reached the age in which the obligations of the Sharee’ah are obligated on him or her] seeks after concessions in the Madhabs in every affair that is difficult for him and every statement that agrees with his desires, then he will remove himself from the firm handhold of piety and persist upon the pursuit of desires”. (3)

Mistakes of Some of The Sincere Ones Are a Trial for The Followers of Desires

Al-Allaamah Abdur-Rahmaan Bin Yahyah Al-Mu’allimee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “And know that some of the sincere ones fall into error by the will of Allaah as a trial for others, as to whether they will follow the truth and abandon his speech, or be deceived by his virtuousness and lofty (status)? He (i.e. this sincere scholar) is excused; rather he is rewarded for striving to reach the correct verdict and his intention to reach good, and he is not degraded. However, the one who follows him (out of being) deceived by his great (status) without turning towards the real evidences in Allaah’s Book (i.e. the Qur’aan) and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he is not excused; rather he is upon a great danger”. (4)

Therefore, we do not entertain the argument of any of our elder children – who want to be seen as followers of clear proofs – if they claim that that there is a concession or difference of opinion in the subject matter of Qaza; rather the evidences are as clear as the midday sun. O Allaah’s Messenger! Prices Have Gone Up, So Fix Prices For Us

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِنَ الأَمْوَالِ وَالأَنْفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ وَبَشِّرِالصَّابِرِينَ
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَـٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ۬ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيۡهِ رَٲجِعُونَ
أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ عَلَيۡہِمۡ صَلَوَٲتٌ۬ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَرَحۡمَةٌ۬‌ۖ وَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدُونَ

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” They are those on whom are the Salawat (i.e. blessings, etc.) (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Verses 155-157]

Anas Bin Maalik [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that the people said, “O Allaah’s Messenger! Prices have gone up, so fix prices for us”. So, Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Allah is the one Who fixes prices, Who withholds, gives lavishly and provides, and I hope that when I meet Allah, none of you will have any claim on me for an injustice regarding blood or property”. [Saheeh Sunan Abee Dawud. Number 3450]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: High increases in prices and their decreases are among those events that none brings about except Allaah alone and nothing can occur from it except by Allaah’s Will, but He [Glory be He and free is He from all imperfections] has made some of the actions of His slaves the cause of some incidents, just as He made the deed of killing of a killer a cause of the death of the victim, and the increase in prices may be due to the injustice of the people, and the decrease may be due to the benevolence of some people. (1)

Pay attention to the statement of Shaikhul Islaam as follows, “….the increase in prices may be due to the injustice of the people, and the decrease may be due to the benevolence of some people”. Indeed, it is common knowledge in our era that farmers – in some wealthy nations – are sometimes ordered to dump good produce. This is due to a number of reasons: firstly, sometimes capitalists do not have in place a system that would allow farmers to grow only what is enough, therefore they are left with no choice but to dump some of their produce. However, despite this overproduction, many people are still unable to afford good quality food. One of the ways this can be avoided is if governments help charities to repackage and redistribute excess food to those in need of it. Secondly, sometimes the greedy capitalists solely desire to make profit regardless of the consequences. For example, there has been incidents – in some wealthy nations – when farmers were ordered to depopulate their livestock to inflate prices, whilst many people were unable to put meat on their tables. This is nothing but an act of conspiring with farmers to create scarcity and thus unveils one of the negative outcomes of a capitalist economy.

The Hoarders: Muammar Bin Abdillaah [may Allaah be pleased with him] who said that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “None hoards except a sinner”. [Saheeh Muslim. Number 1605]

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They are the ones who buy commodities, such as food and the like that people need in times of hardship, and he stores it so that when the price is high he sells it for more. This is not permissible and it is an evil deed, and the one who does this is a sinner. If there is one in charge of authority in the country, It is obligated on him to implement the affairs related to the Sharee’ah, and it is obligated on the one in charge of authority to prevent him from doing so, and compel him to sell food at the same price – at the current price that is in the markets; and he cannot hoard it if it is during the time of hardship. As for the one who buys food or other than food that people need in a time of prosperity and abundance in the markets, and not to harm anyone, then when trade begins, he sells it with the people without delaying it until when a state of extreme need occurs, rather, he sells when the trading begins and there is benefit, there is no objection to this action of his. This is work of merchants in ancient and modern times. (2)

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: It is forbidden to monopolize (or hoard) what people are in need of. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “”None hoards except a sinner”. This is a person who deliberately commits a sin. But monopolizing (or hoarding) is only in relation to what is not found with anyone else other than this monopolist (or hoarder). As for what him and someone else possess and he wants to keep the commodity until its season comes, then there is nothing wrong with this and this is not considered a monopoly (or hoarding). For instance, if a person buys rice and says: I will save it until the time of its season, whilst the people have rice and they sell as they want, then this is not considered a monopoly (or hoarding); but it is not found except with him, and he is saves it until the time of high prices comes, then indeed this is monopolizing (or hoarding). The scholars said that the one in charge of authority is obliged to force the monopolist to sell what he has monopolized (or hoarded) just as people sell at the time they need to sell because this is in the public interest. Those Worthy of Being Taken As Examples to Follow By The Muslim World

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Do not look at the one who calls himself a Muslim (or attributes himself to Islaam) yet he throws its morals behind his back, and thus that is used as proof against Islaam and the Muslims due to his ignobility, decadence and lack of good manners; for indeed Islaam is innocent of the one whose situation is like this. And even if he is called a Muslim, then he does not have from it except its likeness, for indeed the religion of Islam is the religion of elevation and correct progress, and all its teachings, instructions, morals and deeds are at the highest degree of perfection and orderliness – in its paths and goals. This is the aim of its guidance to every good, righteousness and rectification for those who are truly attributed to it, as it is well-known regarding the state of affairs of the early generations of the Islamic Ummah – those who truly established it, filled the world with (true, sound) justice, mercy, righteousness and rectification in all situations, and through them is an example taken regarding the perfection of humankind.

Therefore, whoever wants to know the effects of the religion, then let him look at the likes of those people. As for the one who desires arrogance and deception, he has another view. Many people say, “This is the era of knowledge, comprehension, awareness and advancement”, but their intent behind this is to turn away from the (upright) past and the sciences of religion. Indeed, they have spoken the truth in one way and lied in other ways! They have spoken the truth that it is a time in which the sciences related to crafts (industries, skilled occupations etc) and inventions have progressed, as well as that which is related to material things and the natural sciences; but they have uttered the most terrible lies when they restricted knowledge to this type of knowledge. They do not know that the real – useful – knowledge is the knowledge conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah, the guarantor of every good in religious affairs, worldly affairs and affairs related to the Hereafter. The beneficial knowledge from the sciences related to crafts (industries, skilled occupations) and inventions enters into this affair; rather (sound) religious knowledge is the thing that will lead the natural sciences and the beneficial crafts to that which is of sound benefit. It is that which will regulate them to benefit humankind and prevent them from destructive recklessness. And due this, we say: “Indeed, they have also lied from another angle because they did not direct these sciences – which they are proud of- towards useful guidance (or orientation), but rather they used them in that which harms the creation, ruination, annihilation and destruction. It is one of the greatest blessings, but it became one of the greatest afflictions and malice due to the manner they utilised them. This is from that which is well-known – and there is no doubt about it – that indeed a thing that is not (controlled or regulated) by sound religion will take a different orientation, and its harm is greater than its benefit. And they indeed have spoken the truth that it is an era of material progress, however they have lied by calling it progress (unrestrictedly) and thus one thinks that it is progress in everything; rather it is only progress related crafts (industries, skilled occupations) and inventions and not related to virtuous manners and (sound) religious affairs. There is no benefit in material progress if it eliminates those manners that are the purview in everything – the very thing that will make affairs upright and without which the affairs cannot be upright, as it is witnessed and clearly seen. Therefore, what type of progress is this, whose people became like vicious wild animals and whose abiding practice is oppression, annihilation, colonization of weak nations and depriving them of their rights? Sound progress whose effects are from (sound) religion, justice, mercy, fulfilling rights (or obligations)- an urge towards every good and warning against every evil – is the progress whose scent they have neither smelled nor have their hearts perceived. How can they perceive with their hearts whilst their hearts are filled with anxiety, vehement greed, vanity, arrogance, deceit and every evil trait? And indeed, they have also lied in their claim that they are the ones who started the beneficial contemporary sciences and the crafts (or specialist occupations), and that the Islamic legislation neither led the way to them nor guided to its basis (or origins). This is mighty slander and arrogance that is known to the one with the least assessment of the religion of Islaam. How can that be when it has established mighty beneficial fundamental principles for the servants by way of which their worldly affairs became upright, just as it has established for them beneficial principles which brought uprightness in their religious affairs. Indeed, we have already mentioned some of the texts from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah that indicates to this fundamental. Yes, if only they said, “The people – in this era – have benefited through these religious principles and teachings to develop crafts (industries, skilled professions), discover new inventions, acquaint (themselves) with the paths of economic activity and the like, but they developed these affairs through a development that is disconnected and severed from submission to Allāh and the religion ordained by Allāh; so because of this it has brought benefit in that which contains worldly benefits for the people and benefited those who use it to support the religion and do good. On the one hand, it has caused harm and led its proponents to savagery and barbarism whose outcomes has been destruction, ruin and evils that has no comparison.

As mentioned previously, it also caused harm due to what it brought in the souls of its proponents of vanity, deception and arrogance, enslavement of the weak, oppression, violation of rights and various types of evils. If these worldly inventions allied with the religion as its guide, then its benefits would have been twice as great as what is witnessed; its harm and evils would have been repelled and it would have been established upon good and uprightness; its outcomes would have been good and would be a means of rectification in the religious and worldly affairs; but Allāh has matters to bring forth in His created beings (by way of His Decree based on Perfect Knowledge, Wisdom and Justice). What Does Revival Necessitate In The View of The Atheists?

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

In the view of these atheists, revival and advancement means to assimilate into the morale and mentality of the outsiders – the enemies of all religions, lose all their personalities by adopting the personalities of those people, imitate them in their manners, dress, dealings and customs precisely and distinctly, because they see that one should dissociate from the religion ordained by Allāh — which is the religion of truth — and from beautiful manners. This is progress and advancement in their view, so they replace that which is lofty, perfect and precious with something that is low and despicable and thus are in agreement with their enemies outwardly and inwardly. And through this path they became the greatest weapon of the enemies against their religion and people, and for this reason they blindly imitated the foreigners in harmful matters. As for that which they possess of those things that are of benefit – even if associated with the religion, then they are the most distant from it as is well-known regarding their state of affairs.

What Does Modern Culture [or Intellectual Development] Necessitate In The View of The Atheists

And through that which the deviants decorate their falsehood is their strong language (or forceful speech) regarding modern culture (or intellectual development), whilst claiming that neither can manners be refined nor free from oppression and tyranny except by way of that. They exaggerated in praising it and its educators, vilify those who do not have this modern culture and ridicule them. They interpret it with various deviated interpretations and everyone blurting, because if sciences are disorderly and manners are based on them, then this is how its people will behave. They do not agree – in anything – in their views and opinions, and all their statements refer back to toppling the religion and manners. Indeed, sound intellectual development and beneficial refinement is that which the religion of Islaam brought, which cleansed the beliefs from polytheism and the worship of images; cleansed the manners from every evil trait, cleansed deeds and etiquettes until matters became rectified, the state of affairs came to be upright, combined between the religious and worldly affairs, reformed the beneficial morale and the materials sciences that support them. And certainly what is witnessed is a testimony to that which we have mentioned, for indeed the contemporary (or modern) sciences and inventions – despite their expansion and vastness – have been unable to rectify the manners, bring about sound virtues and remove evil due to them being devoid of (sound) religion; rather the religion of Islaam is that which will guarantee this rectification, undertake this beneficial refinement, direct towards every good and deter every evil, for indeed it is the rectifier of the apparent matters (i.e. deeds) and the hidden affairs of the soul in the religious and worldly affairs. Whoever looks at its fundamentals, subsidiary issues and what it deters, he will find the affair as we have mentioned; rather -above everything else -Allāh is the granter of success. (1)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said:

What type of progress is this? A progress whose people became like vicious wild animals and whose abiding practice is oppression, annihilation, colonization of weak nations and depriving them of their rights? (2)

They developed these affairs through a development that is disconnected and severed from submission to Allāh and the religion ordained by Allāh… it has caused harm and led its proponents to savagery and barbarism whose outcomes has been destruction, ruin and evils that has no comparison. (3)

Indeed, it is impossible to rectify the souls and acquire virtue solely through the worldly sciences. Experience and clearly witnessed circumstances are the greatest proofs regarding this affair, because despite its advancement and vastness it has been unable to nurture and rectify the souls. What the Religion of Islaam propagates is that which is entrusted with this rectification – it is what will guide the thoughts towards the truthful and authentic sources of knowledge, and guide the actions of the people towards good and prevent them from evil. Islam is The Rectifier of the Creeds and Manners- the thing that cultivates the thoughts [upon righteousness], urges towards virtuousness and prevents from depravity. The essence of that which the religion calls to regarding belief in the Unseen, which includes belief in Allaah and that which He possesses of Names, Attributes and Actions of perfection; belief in Angels, belief in recompense for one’s good and bad deeds in this life and the next, which cannot be known except through the Messengers, is what acquaints a person with the fact that rectification – in reality – is not possible through other than sound belief and the religion of Islaam. Therefore, even if the worldly sciences rectify [some] affairs based upon that which people know in detail, it will still not be equal [in perfection, excellence etc] to the knowledge of the Messengers [in the least]. It will neither reach that which is reached through the knowledge of the Messengers nor can it influence the souls in the manner in which the knowledge of the Messengers has done; for indeed the souls do not voluntarily submit except through belief in Allaah, belief in His Angels, belief in His Books, belief in His Messengers and belief in the hereafter. And without this, voluntary submission is impossible, as is well known regarding human nature. (4)

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him said: If medicine, engineering and chemistry are not placed below the knowledge which the Prophets brought, they become nothing; [rather] they will only increase the people in corruption. The knowledge brought by the Prophets is rectification for the people, a guide for them towards the right path and removes them from the darkness they are living in – the darkness of kufr and ignorance. As for the knowledge of the philosophers and the heretics, then what Allaah has stated truly applies to it: [فَلَمَّا جَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَرِحُواْ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَہۡزِءُونَ -Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad [and proud] with that which they had of the knowledge [of worldly things]: And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them [i.e. the punishment]. [Surah Ghaafir’ Aayah 83]

It is the knowledge which the people boast about nowadays, whether it is medicine, engineering, astronomy, [modern] politics and economics. After the Prophets came to them – to remove them from the darkness of ignorance and enter them into the light of the knowledge and Eemaan- they became glad and boastful with the knowledge they possess, [just as Allaah has stated]: [فَلَمَّا جَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَرِحُواْ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَہۡزِءُونَ -Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad [and proud] with that which they had of the knowledge [of worldly things]: And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them [i.e. the punishment]. [Surah Ghaafir’ Aayah 83]

[Likewise, Allaah informed us that] Qaaroon said: [إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ عِندِىٓ‌ۚ – This [i.e. vast wealth] has been given to me only because of knowledge I possess. [Surah Al-Qasas’ Aayah 78]. They rebuked him [i.e. Qaaroon] because he did not want to spend from his wealth based on what Allaah has commanded, so Allaah said that he said: [إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ عِندِىٓ‌ۚ – This (.e. vast wealth) has been given to me only because of knowledge I possess]. [Surah Al-Qasas’ Aayah 78]

Likewise, Allaah said: [وَإِذَآ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِ – And when We bestow Our Grace on man (the disbeliever), he turns away and becomes arrogant, far away from the Right Path]. [Surah Al-Israa’ Aayah 83]

[ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلۡنَـٰهُ نِعۡمَةً۬ مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭ‌ۚ بَلۡ هِىَ فِتۡنَةٌ۬ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ – Then when We have (rescued him from that harm and) changed it into a favour from Us, he says: “Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it.” Nay, it is only a trial, but most of them know not]! [Surah Az-Zumar’ Aayah 49]

Allaah said that he [i.e. the ungrateful human being says after being rescued from hardship]:

[قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭ‌ۚ – he says: “Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it]; but Allaah said: [ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ – Nay, it is only a trial, but most of them know not!]

These sciences become a trial and tribulation if they are not placed below [and regulated by] the knowledge which Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah] brought. (5)

Comprehensive Guidance of The Messenger 

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Muhammad’s [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] Ummah is not in need of anyone after him; rather the only need they have is someone to convey what he came with. Muhammad’s message is comprehensive, universal and preserved. This universality, comprehensiveness and preservation is not limited to [any time and place], rather it is comprehensive for those to whom Muhammad was sent [i.e. the whole world] and likewise with regards to everything that is needed in the fundamental and subsidiary issues of the religion.

Muhammad’s message is sufficient, all embracing and universal- nothing else is needed besides it. It has not isolated any affair of truth needed by his Ummah in their sciences and deeds. The Messenger of Allaah did not leave this world until he acquainted his Ummah with everything. He even taught them the etiquettes of using the toilet; the etiquettes of sexual relations; the etiquettes of sleep and after waking up; the etiquettes of eating, drinking and travel.

He acquainted them with the etiquettes of speech and silence; the etiquettes of keeping company with the people and seclusion. He acquainted them with the affairs of illness, good health, poverty and wealth. He acquainted them with all the affairs of life and death. He described Allaah’s throne, the angels, the jinn, the hell fire and the day of judgement in such a manner as if one has seen them with the naked eye. He informed them about their Lord and His Perfect Names and Attributes, and that Allaah alone is their true object of worship.

He acquainted them with the Prophets of old and their nations – the events that took place between them and their nations – in such a manner as if one was present at that time. He acquainted them with all the means to good and the paths of evil- in general and in detail- which no other prophet informed his nation. He acquainted them with death and what will take place in the grave – either bliss or punishment. He acquainted them with the evidences and proofs of Tawheed [i.e. the oneness of Allaah in His Lordship, Names and Attributes, and that Allaah alone has the right to be worshipped].

He acquainted them with Prophet hood and the affairs of the Afterlife, and he refuted all the sects of disbelief and misguidance. He acquainted them with war strategies- how to confront the enemy, the way to achieve victory and conquests. If only they knew and understood these affairs in the correct manner [i.e. the manner it should be understood], they would not be overcome by their enemy. He acquainted them with the plots of Iblees and the ways through which he approaches them, and the ways to repel those plots and plans. He acquainted them with the soul- its characteristics and faults- in such a manner that they are not in need of anyone else to tell them about it. He taught them how to live their daily lives and had they acknowledged and acted upon this; their worldly affairs would be firmly established. He brought them all the means of success in this life and the next, and they do not need anyone besides him. So how can it be said that the path of Muhammad is in need of something else outside of it. The reason for such a claim is due to the weak and little understanding of a person. Allaah [The Most High] said: [أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ أَنَّا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ – Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe].

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ – And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims)].

Allaah [The Most High] said: [يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ – O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord [i.e. the Qur’an, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil], and a healing for that [disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.] in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy [explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.] for the believers]. (6)

How to Approach the Contemporary Worldly Sciences

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [may allaah preserve him] said: The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop [of water, semen], then he is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period…. [An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth. Hadeeth 4]

It is well known that during that era, the Sahaabah did not know these stages (of development of the human being in the womb) through experimental knowledge, vision [i.e. by way X-rays or ultrasound that enables the human to see something in the womb) or other than that; rather it was simply (a statement of the Prophet) which they (believed and affirmed). They were scholars by way of the revelation sent down to the Prophet and not by way of experimentation (examination). [Sharh Al-Arba’een. Hadeeth 4]

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: We do not say, “We do not give consideration to anything stated by the people in the subject matter regarding medicine, astronomy and the celestial bodies”, however, we do not accept everything they say. If what they say opposes the Book and the (authentic) Sunnah, then indeed we do not accept their statements. We take [i.e. believe and affirm without any doubt] that which is conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah], and we say, “An era will come in which the people will bear witness to the falsity of those statements of theirs – at present – that are in opposition to the Book and Sunnah and (bear witness) to the soundness of that which has been conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah. Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Indeed, that which is stated by the astronomers about the celestial bodies, their sizes and the distance between them, and that which is said about the earth [i.e. by the geologists etc] is categorized into three affairs: [a] That which is backed by the sound knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the Sharee’ah], therefore it is accepted. [b] That which the knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the sharee’ah] declares to be false, therefore it is rejected. [c] That which there is no proof to either accept or reject it, therefore it is unproven until a person from the people of knowledge [i.e. upright scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] examines it [i.e. examines what it indicates based on the Book and Sunnah] to show whether it should be accepted or rejected. As for accepting it without [sound] investigation and observation, but merely accepting it by blindly following them [i.e. the astronomers, geologists etc], then this is impermissible because of the numerous mistakes that occur as a result of that and speaking -without knowledge – about Allaah and that which He has created [i.e. the entire universe and all that is within it]. Therefore, we return to those honest investigators – those students of sound Aqeedah who are well acquainted with both the statements of the upright scholars and the contemporary worldly sciences, such as the likes of Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh Amjad Rafiq [may Allaah preserve him, increase him in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. And likewise preserve all the students and Ahlus Sunnah Aameen].

Lessons – For Contemporary Opportunists, Warmongers and War Profiteers – to Learn From The Character of Ottoman Sultan Uthmaan (The First) and Ottoman Sultan Murad (The First)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Uthmaan -(The First) – Gave Advice On His Deathbed

“O my son! Beware of busying yourself with something that Allaah, the Lord of the worlds, has not commanded, and if you are faced with a dilemma in relation to passing a judgement, then take the advice of the scholars of the religion”. “Be generous to the soldiers. Let not shaytaan deceive you by your soldiers and wealth, and beware of turning away from the people of the Sharee’ah (i.e. the scholars)”. “O my son! You know that our goal is to please Allaah, the Lord of the worlds, and that by way of Jihaad the light of our religion spreads to the different regions, so that the pleasure of Allaah – may He be glorified and exalted – manifests”. “O my son! We are not among those who start wars due to a desire to rule and control. We live for Islam and die with Islam. O my son! This is what is worthy of you”. “know O my son! Spreading Islam, guiding people to it, protecting the honour of Muslims and their wealth is a trust, and Allaah – The Almighty – will ask you about it”. “O my son! I am returning to my Lord, and I am proud of you that you will be just to those under your authority and striving in the path of Allaah to spread the religion ordained by Allaah”. “O my son! I advise you to adhere to the scholars of the Ummah continuously, take care of them, honour them a lot and consult them, because they do not command you with anything else except good. O my son! Beware of doing something that does not please Allaah – The Almighty, and if something is difficult for you, ask the scholars of the Sharee’ah, because indeed they will guide you to good”. “know, O my son! Our only path in this world is the path ordained by Allaah and our only goal is to spread the religion ordained by Allaah, and we are neither seekers of status nor worldly things”. “My advice to my children and friends is that they maintain the loftiness of the glorious Islamic religion by carrying on with Jihaad in the path of Allaah. Hold onto the honorable banner of Islam at the top with the most perfect Jihaad. Serve Islaam always, because indeed Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] appointed a weak servant like me to conquer countries. Go with the statement of pure Islamic monotheism to the furthest countries in Jihaad in the path of Allaah”. “O my son! There is none in the worldly life except that he will submit to death and my life span has approached its end by the command of Allaah. I pass on the affairs of this empire to you and I leave you in the protection of Al-Mawlaa [Allaah – The Protector] and be just in all your affairs”. (1)

Sultan Murad’s Supplication Before The Battle of Kosovo

Sultan Murad knew that he was fighting in the cause of Allaah and that victory only comes from Allaah, and that was why he used to supplicate a lot, persisted in asking Allaah, humbled himself to Allaah and relied on Him. One of his devout and sincere supplications demonstrates his knowledge and awareness of his Lord, and the fulfilment of servitude to Allaah.

He said, “O Allaah! O The Most Merciful! O Lord of The heavens and the earth! O The One Who responds to supplication! Do not disgrace me. O The Most Merciful! O The Bestower of Mercy! Respond to the supplication of Your poor servant. Send us rain from the sky and dispel the clouds of darkness, so that we can see our enemy. We are nothing other than Your sinful slaves. Indeed, You are The Bestower of all blessings and favours and we are Your poor dependents. I am nothing other than Your poor slave, one of low status in Your presence. Your are the All-Knower, The Knower of all the unseen, the secrets and everything hidden in the hearts”. “Neither do I have personal goals nor interests for myself, nor am I driven by a desire for the spoils of war. I do not desire except Your Pleasure! O Allaah! O All Knower! O The One Whose Knowledge encompasses every place (and everything)! I give you my soul, so grant me what I hope for. Do not let the Muslims become forsaken in front of the enemy! O Allaah! O The Most Merciful of all those who show mercy! Do not make me the reason behind their demise, but make them victorious! O Lord! I give my soul for you. I have wished and I always want to be martyred, so O my deity, do not show me their plight! O my deity! This time allow me to be martyred for Your sake and for Your pleasure”. (2)

As for some of the contemporary so called civilized figureheads of modernity, their goals behind wars is nothing but a desire for leadership and wealth, as Imaam Ibnul Qayiim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated regarding those who crave leadership for nothing other than the desires of the Dunyah: “Its seekers hasten to obtain it in order to achieve their goals – exaltedness in the earth, enslavement of the hearts to them, attachment to them and aiding them in all their goals, whilst they are exalted and everyone subservient to them. This pursuit of leadership brings about corruption- which none can enumerate except Allaah, such as rebellion, envy, transgression, enmity, oppression, trials, being ardent in defending oneself at the expense of violating the rights of Allaah, exalting those despised by Allaah and belittling those honoured by Allaah”. [An Excerpt from Ar-Rooh. pages 487-489]

One of the contemporary warmongers (Colin Powell) who gave a speech – on February 2003 speech to the United Nations Security Council about the alleged existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq – stated thereafter in 2005 (interview with ABC News): “It’s a blot … and will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It’s painful now”. So, that claim was nothing but a false one yet they desire to be praised for that which they have not done. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

لَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَفۡرَحُونَ بِمَآ أَتَواْ وَّيُحِبُّونَ أَن يُحۡمَدُواْ بِمَا لَمۡ يَفۡعَلُواْ فَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّہُم بِمَفَازَةٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ‌ۖ
وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ۬

Think not that those who rejoice in what they have done (or brought about), and love to be praised for what they have not done,- think not you that they are rescued from the torment, and for them is a painful torment.” [3:188] Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They want to be praised for that which they have not done and truth they have not uttered, so they combine evil doing and its statement, and rejoice in that. And they love to be praised for some good they have not done. (3)

[a] Reminder: Native Americans Were Slaughtered in the Name of ‘Civilization’. 1,500 wars and raids were authorized against the Indians and do you remember the Gnadenhutten Massacre in 1782?!

[b] The Hiroshima Bomb? Search for what Marcel Junod – a representative of the Red cross at the time – stated!

[c] Barbaric Sanctions and Later on Invasion of Iraq: Do you remember the barbaric sanctions imposed on Iraq that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Iraqi children? Do you remember what some of your own journalists called an “act of military aggression launched on a false pretext!” There’s no need to give details regarding the suffering and lives lost because that is well documented. And do you remember the torture at Abu Ghuraib prison?! So, who deserves to be referred to as “Global Pariahs” – those Muslim rulers or those people whose false allegations against Muslim rulers you are happy to present as facts?!

ISIS (so called Islamic State and their supporters) commit murder and cause corruption by way of their religious innovations and the claim that they want to establish Sharee’ah. As for the contemporary figureheads of the so called free world, they fabricate evidence to initiate wars in the name of self-defense, even though they goal is to secretly steal raw materials as soon as they kindle the fire of deadly conflicts. Both groups (ISIS and figureheads of the so called free world) seek praise, even though their corruption is manifest for everyone to see. Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَا تُفۡسِدُواْ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُصۡلِحُونَ
أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَشۡعُرُونَ
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ ءَامِنُواْ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓاْ أَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ‌ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ

And when it is said to them: ‘’Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers. Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not. And when it is said to them [hypocrites]: ‘’Believe as the people [followers of Muhammad (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam) have believed,’’ they say: ‘’Shall we believe as the fools have believed?’’ Verily, they are the fools, but they know not. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayaat 11-13]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They are liars, mischief makers and trapped in mischief making. Allaah said: [أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَ – Verily! They are the ones who make mischief]. Allaah described them as a people who are upon extreme ignorance and that they definitely do not possess (sound) perception due to the fact that they are mischief makers. Therefore, ponder upon the way in which perception was negated from them in this Aayah! Then knowledge was negated from them when Allaah [The Most High] stated that they said: [أَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ‌ۗ – Shall we believe as the fools have believed], so Allaah [The Most High] said: [أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ -verily, they are the fools, but they know not].

Allaah [The Most High] negated knowledge from them due to their foolishness and lack of (upright) perception -a severe dispraise and (declaration) of their ignorance, because (of the fact that although one is truly) a mischief maker (but) completely unaware of it, even though its effects is well known and witnessed by Allaah’s slaves. This shows the severe corruption of one’s intellect and sources of knowledge.

Also, he is a foolish person and foolishness is the height of ignorance that occurs due to lack of knowledge of that which would benefit him in his worldly life, his afterlife, his purpose (of life) and what is contrary to that. So, when he (finds) himself in this situation, whilst being unaware of his state of affairs, then this is the most wretched state of a human being.

[Upright] knowledge was negated from him due to his foolishness, which of a surety is an affirmation of his ignorance and (upright) perception was negated from him due to mischief making, which of a surety is due to corruption in his mental faculties. Therefore, these three verses are statements of absolute certainty against them regarding their ignorance and corrupt mental faculties, because they believe that mischief making is peace making and that evil is something good. (4)

Finally, we ask Allaah to include us amongst those who adhere to the advice given by Jundub [may Allaah be pleased with him] when the people said to him, “Advise us”. So, he said, “The first thing of the human body to putrefy is the abdomen, so he who can eat nothing but good food [halaal and earned lawfully] should do so, and he who does as much as he can that nothing intervenes between him and paradise by not shedding even a handful of blood [i.e. unlawful killing], should do so”. Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 17

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

And through that which the atheists embellish their falsehood and sciences that are in opposition to the religion is that they adorn expressions for them, so they refer to them as revival, progress, advancement and the like, and terms by way of which they deceive those who have no insight. As for the truth which the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] brought, they call it rigid, narrowmindedness, chary and backward, as Allāh [The Most High] stated about their ancestors.

وكذلك جعلنا لكل نبي عدوا شياطين الإنس والجن يوحي بعضهم إلى بعض زخرف القول غرورا

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception).

ولتصغى إليه أفئدة الذين لا يؤمنون بالآخرة وليرضوه وليقترفوا ما هم مقترفون

(And this is in order) that the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter may incline to such (deceit), and that they may remain pleased with it, and that they may commit what they are committing (all kinds of sins and evil deeds, etc.). [Surah Al-An-An’aam. Verses 112-113]

Allāh [The Most High] informed us that this is an abiding practice of the enemies of the Messengers during every era, that they adorn expressions to beautify their falsehood, uglify that which the Messengers came with, co-operate with one another upon that, fabricate lies against Allāh and deceive the one who do not possess knowledge, neither insight nor Eemaan. These people accept everything that was uttered by their ancestors – the beliers of the revelation and add an increase to this affair. And how many of those with weak insight have they trapped!

And that which the Messenger brought is neither incredulous nor backward; rather it is truth and light (pure guidance), a means to good (upright) life and guidance without which there will neither be uprightness for the hearts nor for the worldly existence (i.e. due to widespread corruption). There is no light except the light acquire from its light. It awakens the determinations and resolves to pursue every praiseworthy characteristic, sound progress and beneficial advancement. Indeed, one of the Major Fundamental Principles of the Islamic Legislation is the obligation of utilising the beneficial means – their goals and paths; an urge towards every righteous deed and affairs that bring about wellbeing, asking Allaah for help to accomplish it as well as striving. It is well-known that the one who establishes these two fundamental principles, makes an exerted effort in every beneficial matter and seeks help from the One Who alone has the right to be worshipped [i.e. Allāh], then indeed he will not cease to make continuous advancement and progress in rectifying the religion and those worldly matters that support the religious affairs, just as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Be eager for what benefits you and seek Allāh’s Aid”. There are many verses in the Book of Allāh and (ahaadeeth in) the Sunnah of Messenger that commands one to perform every beneficial deed and urges for sound beneficial progress for individuals, groups, society and governments. As for the material sciences that are devoid of the essence of the religion and its mercy, then indeed it is an advancement towards destruction and ruin- an advancement for the destruction of every beautiful trait and ascription to every evil trait. That which is witnessed and clearly seen is the greatest testimony to this. Indeed, it is impossible to accomplish sound progress, except when accompanied by sound religion, which is inseparable from truth, because falsehood will end in demise and decline, and its final result will be loss and destruction, even though it may have some type of authority. (1)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said: Industrialization and modern Inventions: Everyone has participated in it – the righteous, the wicked, the believer and the disbeliever. As for religion and [virtuous] manners, then indeed -in this era-, it has greatly declined. So, when this industrial advancement is devoid of (sound) religion and Eemaan, it became a great harm from two angles:

Firstly: It beguiled many people, who – due of their ignorance – think that worldly advancement is proof to show that its people are more worthy of achieving every good than others. They are clearly misguided, for indeed a person might be from the most skillful in affairs related to the material world, whilst he is one of the most ignorant people in affairs related to the deen, virtuous manners and the [other] beneficial affairs in this life and the next.

Secondly: When these inventions are devoid of Deen, its mercy and wisdom, it becomes a great disaster for humankind due to the wars that resulted from them, killing, destruction and other affairs related to it. Its regulators [or overseers] and scholars are unable to laydown – for humankind -a stable, just and good life, rather they have not ceased moving from one miserable state to another. This is inevitable and the continuous state of affairs shows that [to be the case]. Therefore all good is found in the sound religion and all evil is found in rejecting and willfully denying [Allaah, His Messengers, His Laws, Guidance, Commands, Prohibitions etc]. (2)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said:

Indeed, it is impossible to rectify the souls and acquire virtue solely through the worldly sciences. Experience and clearly witnessed circumstances are the greatest proofs regarding this affair, because despite its advancement and vastness it has been unable to nurture and rectify the souls [i.e. upon excellent traits, manners, dealings, characteristics, sound creed etc] which are the determinants of [sound] rectification and success. What the Religion of Islaam propagates is that which is entrusted with this rectification; it is what will guide the thoughts towards the truthful and authentic sources of knowledge, guide the actions of the people towards good and prevent them from evil. Islam is The Rectifier of the Creeds and Manners- the thing that cultivates the thoughts [upon righteousness], urges towards virtuousness and prevents from depravity.

The essence of that which the religion calls to – regarding belief in the Unseen, which includes belief in Allaah and that which He possesses of Names, Attributes and Actions of perfection; belief in Angels, belief in recompense for one’s good and bad deeds in this life and the next, which cannot be known except through the Messengers, is what acquaints a person with the fact that rectification – in reality – is not possible through other than sound belief and the religion of Islaam.

Therefore, even if the worldly sciences rectify [some] affairs based upon that which [some] people know in detail, it will still not be equal [in perfection, excellence etc] to the knowledge of the Messengers [in the least]. It will neither reach that which is reached through the knowledge of the Messengers nor can it influence the souls in the manner in which the knowledge of the Messengers has done; for indeed the souls do not voluntarily submit except through belief in Allaah, belief in His Angels, belief in His Books, belief in His Messengers and belief in the hereafter. And without this, voluntary submission is impossible, as is well known regarding human nature. (3)

Saudi King Abdul Azeez [rahimahullaah] said: Indeed, the progress and advancement of the Muslims is among those affairs we [pursue]–we call to it by the will of Allaah. [However] there cannot be advancement for the Muslims without a return to their religion, adherence to their sound creed and holding onto the Rope of Allaah [i.e. the Qur’aan and the Sunnah]. The path towards this is clear and facilitated for the one who wants to follow it, and that is to single out Allaah in worship – to be free from shirk and bidah- and act on that which the religion has commanded us, for indeed there is no benefit in speech if not [accompanied] by action. (4)

How to Approach the Contemporary Worldly Sciences

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [may allaah preserve him] said: The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop [of water, semen], then he is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period…. [An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth. Hadeeth 4]

It is well known that during that era, the Sahaabah did not know these stages (of development of the human being in the womb) through experimental knowledge, vision [i.e. by way X-rays or ultrasound that enables the human to see something in the womb) or other than that; rather it was simply (a statement of the Prophet) which they (believed and affirmed). They were scholars by way of the revelation sent down to the Prophet and not by way of experimentation (examination). [Sharh Al-Arba’een. Hadeeth 4]

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: We do not say, “We do not give consideration to anything stated by the people in the subject matter regarding medicine, astronomy and the celestial bodies”, however, we do not accept everything they say. If what they say opposes the Book and the (authentic) Sunnah, then indeed we do not accept their statements. We take [i.e. believe and affirm without any doubt] that which is conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah], and we say, “An era will come in which the people will bear witness to the falsity of those statements of theirs – at present – that are in opposition to the Book and Sunnah and (bear witness) to the soundness of that which has been conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah. Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Indeed, that which is stated by the astronomers about the celestial bodies, their sizes and the distance between them, and that which is said about the earth [i.e. by the geologists etc] is categorized into three affairs: [a] That which is backed by the sound knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the Sharee’ah], therefore it is accepted. [b] That which the knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the sharee’ah] declares to be false, therefore it is rejected. [c] That which there is no proof to either accept or reject it, therefore it is unproven until a person from the people of knowledge [i.e. upright scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] examines it [i.e. examines what it indicates based on the Book and Sunnah] to show whether it should be accepted or rejected. As for accepting it without [sound] investigation and observation, but merely accepting it by blindly following them [i.e. the astronomers, geologists etc], then this is impermissible because of the numerous mistakes that occur as a result of that and speaking -without knowledge – about Allaah and that which He has created [i.e. the entire universe and all that is within it]. Therefore, we return to those honest investigators – those students of sound Aqeedah who are well acquainted with both the statements of the upright scholars and the contemporary worldly sciences, such as the likes of Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh Amjad Rafiq [may Allaah preserve him, increase him in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. And likewise preserve all the students and Ahlus Sunnah Aameen].

Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 15

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Likewise is the statement of many of the materialists (atheists) and those who blindly follow them, that “There should be freedom of ideas, everyone should be free to hold the opinion he sees fit and the proposal he makes in all circumstances”. This has also manifested its great harm. Indeed, freedom of ideas – giving everyone his freedom (i.e. based on desires) – has shown to be the very reason behind anarchy, rather that is its basis. That is because when people are given freedom in that which corrupt their morals and (sound) beliefs, and thus their deeds became chaotic, animals become better than them. This is the reality in every country where freedom has been let loose and not restricted by the divine legislated restrictions that are in conformity with (sound) intellect, because the souls command evil, inclines towards arrogance and insolence, and approach every desire whether it harms individuals and groups or not. Just as allowing freedom of action unrestrictedly cannot remain, because if everyone was left with his freedom that he can murder, injure or strike, or take the wealth of the people or violate their honour, then indeed the state of affairs would have been corrupted, the world would be in anarchy, chaos, disturbance and great harm will occur, likewise, the freedom of ideas has brought evil and horrific atrocities, and from its filthy fruits is dispensing with religion and the Messengers [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them], rejecting what they brought and that which sound intellect indicates, such as the obligation of restraining and guarding oneself against the harmful affairs related to creed, morals and deeds.

And among the results of freedom of ideas are the statements heard from the atheistic and vile newspapers that shake the hearts of the people of sound intellect, and indeed they have done great harm to the beliefs and morals; rather it has harmed governments, groups and individuals. As for the Islamic legislation, then indeed it – and praise be to Allāh – came to alert the intellects and urge towards (sound) reflection on those affairs that are useful for one to reflect on, such as the created signs of Allāh in the creation and the divine revelation, pursues the sound paths of reflection and examining them, and thus it affirms the beneficial sciences and truthful understandings- urges towards every beautiful character, warns against every evil character and places a sound restriction on ideas, which if encroached will result in destructive things and various types of misguidance. If ideas are not restricted by sound intellects and religion – which Allāh has provided for the servants in which is the rectification of their affairs and perfection of their circumstances, then indeed they bring about chaos and error, misguidance, misery, folly and insanity. (1)

Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allaah preserve him] stated: “We are living in a time in which the League of Iblees have a frightening grip and amazing amount of resources and means through which waves and waves of assaults are maintained against faith (eemaan), and against tawhid (monotheism), and against the morality that is based upon revelation (as opposed to the “do what thou wilt” of secular humanism), and against the family unit and its bonds (husband-wife, child-parent). And so it is necessary for the Muslims to beware and take extreme caution against the waves upon waves of such assaults that are being made from all directions, the aim of which is to desecrate the foundations of faith, and to desecrate the Prophets of Allaah, in particular Jesus, the Son of Mary (peace be upon them both) and to replace the foundations of faith with a “new age spirituality” which is nothing “new” at all, but comes from none other than Iblees himself and is but the same deception that Iblees used to make Adam err, which is the promise of immortality and eternity, and this is the core, underlying principle of the “new age spirituality” in all of its flavours and manifestations. Further, the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) warned that there would be many dajjaals (liars) in the later times. Such liars and imposters claim divinity or prophethood, and preach a religion other than that preached by the Prophets and Messengers, such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammad (peace be upon all of them). For this reason, given the huge amount of propaganda disseminated through the great many forms of media in the modern age, it is necessary for Muslims to be well-informed about the plots of Iblees his deception and misguiding of the people through their army of devils amongst Jinn and men, all of whom refer to Iblees, spuriously, as “the light bearer”. (2)

Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allaah preserve him] also said: The wisdom of the Islamic Shariah: Cut off evils and harms to society from their very roots and enjoy the resulting freedom, ease and wholesome life. In contrast: the barbarity and backwardness of commercialising corrosive evils– usurious banking, alcohol, gambling–in order to profit from the masses through affairs in which their ruin and impoverishment lies–and then managing this commercialisation through legislation, policies, guidelines and so on to “limit the harms”. The result? Inescapable enslavement, bondage, disease and ruin of the masses for the enrichment of the few who peddle these vices. Where is the intellect?! (3)

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَكَذَٲلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِىٍّ عَدُوًّ۬ا شَيَـٰطِينَ ٱلۡإِنسِ وَٱلۡجِنِّ يُوحِى بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ۬ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورً۬ا‌ۚ وَلَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ مَا فَعَلُوهُ‌ۖ فَذَرۡهُمۡ وَمَا يَفۡتَرُونَ

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayaateen (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications.” [Soorah Al-An’aam: Ayah 112]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated: Allaah [Glorified bee He and free is He from all imperfections] stated that they aid one another in opposing the command of the Prophets with what some of them inspire others of adorned speech, so that the gullible and feeble minded people are misled by it. He [The Most High] stated the reason behind a perpetrator’s [adorned speech] and the reason why it is accepted by the people; then He [The Most High] mentioned [in ayah 113 Al-An’aam] the effects it has on those ignorant souls. When those souls incline towards such adorned speech and become pleased with it, they carry out what it calls them to do -in speech and action. Therefore, ponder upon these verses and the sublime meanings they convey, for they clarify the roots of false principles and alert a person against them. And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give [good] names to the greatest types of wicked deeds. The Different Directions Through Which Iblees Approaches The Children of Aadam

Allaah [The Exalted] informed us in Soorah An-Nisaa Ayah 119 that shaytaan said: [وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ- Verily, I will mislead them]- Meaning: From the truth. [وَلَأُمَنِّيَنَّهُم – And surely, I will arouse in them false desires]. Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said: He (shaytaan) desires to hinder (them) from repentance and to delay it.

[وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُبَتِّكُنَّ آذَانَ الْأَنْعَامِ – I will order them to slit the ears of cattle]- Meaning, cut off the ears of the cattle]; [وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ – And indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allah]. Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said: He (ibleees) intends by this the religion of Allaah. And the meaning of this is that Allaah created his slaves upon an upright fitrah (i.e. an upright natural disposition that will enable them to recognize Allaah, accept the call of the messengers when it reaches them and worship Allaah alone), as He (the most high) said:

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
مُنِيبِينَ إِلَيْهِ وَاتَّقُوهُ

So set you (O Muhammad) your face towards the religion of true Monotheism- Hanifa (worship none but Allah Alone) Allah’s Fitrah (i.e. Allah’s Islamic Monotheism), with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalq–illah (i.e. the Religion of Allah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not. (Always) Turning in repentance to Him (only), and be afraid and dutiful to Him….[Soorah Ar-Rum Aayaat 30-31]

And that is why he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: Every child is born on a Fitrah [a natural disposition to recognize Allaah, accept the call of the messengers when it reaches them and worship Allaah alone], but his/her parents convert them him/her to Judaism, Christianity or Magianism, as an animal gives birth to a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?’’ Then after (narrating this hadeeth) Abu Hurairah recited: [فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا- Allah’s Islamic Monotheism, with which He has created mankind.

Therefore, he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) mentioned two affairs: The alteration of the fitrah through Judaism and Christianity and the alteration of the original natural physical appearance of the creation through mutilation. They are two affairs which iblees said that he must change-alteration of the natural disposition (through) incitement towards disbelief and alteration of the original natural physical appearance through mutilation. So he (iblees) changes the fitrah through incitement towards shirk and alteration of the original natural appearance (of the creation) through cutting and mutilation. This one is alteration of the fitrah of the soul and that one the alteration of the original natural appearance of the creation. (5)

And Allaah [The Exalted] stated that shaytaan said:

قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ
الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُمْ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَنْ شَمَائِلِهِمْ وَلاَ تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ

(Iblis) said: “Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).”

[ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ – Then I will come to them from before them and behind them]. Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said this means, “I [Iblees] will bring doubts to them about the Hereafter”. [وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ – and behind them]. Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said that this means, “I [Iblees] will make them covetous for the worldly things”. [وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ – and from their right]. Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said this means, “I [Iblees] will make their religion obscure [by making them hold onto doubtful matters which they would consider to be the truth]”. [وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ – and from their left]. Al-Hasan [rahimahullaah] said this means, “’I [Iblees] will command them to commit evil deeds, urge them toward it and beautify it in their eyes [i.e. make it fair seeming to them]”. It has also been reported from Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] who said that Iblees did not say ‘’And from above them’’ because he knows that Allaah is above them. Qataadah [rahimahullaah] said, ‘’O son of Adam! Shaytaan comes to you from every direction but not from above because he is not able to come between you and the Mercy of Allaah. (6)

Intoxicated With Desire For Lewd Conduct

Allaah [The Exalted] said about the people of Prophet Lut [peace be upon him]: [لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّہُمۡ لَفِى سَكۡرَتِہِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ – Verily, by your life (O Muhammad), in their wild intoxication, they were wandering blindly]. Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “This wild intoxication is an intoxication with love of lewd acts, which (made) them neither heedful of rebuke nor blame”. (7)

The Most Beneficial Intellect: Ahmad Ibn Aasim Al-Antaakiy (rahimahullaah) said, “The most beneficial intellect is the one that makes you acknowledge the blessings Allaah; aids you in being grateful and oppose (evil) desires”. (8)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Just as Allāh notified us about the resurrection by way of the first creation, and the creation of the heavens and the earth, which is greater than the creation of humankind, and the revival of the earth after its death; and proved the truthfulness of the Messenger and the Qur’aan by challenging humankind and Jinn to bring something similar, or ten chapters like thereof or one chapter, He also established the proofs against the creation through the perfection of what the Messenger brought of truthful news and equitable rulings, and the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. If you are in doubt, then examine (truthfully) every report Allāh conveyed in His Book or reported by His Messenger Muhammad, and you will find that it is upon the highest degree of truthfulness and most beneficial for the people, because indeed accepting and believing in the one who reported it is the greatest nourisher of faith. Reflect a second time! Is there anything in Allāh’s statements and the statements of His Messenger that shows other than what sound perception, true reality and sound intellect shows, or do you find that these matters are the greatest testimonies for the statements of Allāh and His Messenger? Reflect a third time! Do you find anything in Allāh’s rulings and His Messenger’s rulings, the commands and prohibitions, that which negates true wellbeing for the servants or do you find that it is the purpose behind the perfection of their affairs, an elevation of their status, adorns them with beautiful manners and free them from evil manners? It is that which raises its people to the highest levels of perfection, and deficiency and harm do not occur except due being devoid of it or some of it. And indeed one of the allies of the atheists acknowledged this and then unleashed doubts to those who are ignorant of Islaam true reality when he did so in some of its subsidiary branches, but his lies and slander were manifested, well-being was manifested for people and as well as many benefits from the statement which the Islamic legislation demonstrated, because it is the divine law of the Best of Judges, the knower of the unseen and the seen, Who knows (perfectly) the means of wellbeing for the servants that which they do not know, and legislated for them that which is a means of perfect well-being in every era and place, in their religious and worldly, and He is The All-Wise, The All-Knower and The Most Bestower of Special Mercy to The Believers.

Sound intellect affirms Allāh’s Oneness, the fact that Allaah alone is the Creaator, The Provider and The One in Control of alla affairs of the Creation; (affirms) the truthfulness of Allāh’s Messenger and the soundness of what he brought. Whoever claims that anything of the intellectual evidences which the people of sound intellect have submitted to contradicts what Muhammad brought, he is one who is deceived and let him produce a single example because he will not be able to do so. Yes, he may bring theories and fantasies, but when sound intellect is established you will find ignorance and clear misguidance similar to the statement of many of the atheists, who say: “The punishments and prescribed Islamic injunctions, which the religion of Islam brought to deal with crimes, are neither appropriate nor suitable as laws.” So, the best in their view is to replace them with imprisonment and fines. This is tantamount to false conclusion and arrogance in dealing with true reality, for indeed the laws enacted by the atheists to deal with crimes – as well as those who blindly follow them – do not benefit in anything, and its great deficiencies have manifested and its setbacks are great.

Indeed, it has no effect in deterring criminals and the only single way to deter every criminal is through application of the Islamic legislated injunctions and the prescribed religious punishments. It is what will guarantee deterrence against the criminals, as they are penalties, exemplary punishments and admonitions, which if applied in a region amongst the regions, the matters will be rectified, perpetrators and criminals will be fewer and there will be safety against crimes related to murder, wealth and honour, because it is a legislation from One Who is All-Wise in dealing with the circumstances of the servants and that which will rectify their affairs, and protect them from evil. (1)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said:

Allaah [The Most High] said:

لَقَدۡ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ إِذۡ بَعَثَ فِيہِمۡ رَسُولاً۬ مِّنۡ أَنفُسِهِمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡہِمۡ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَيُزَڪِّيہِمۡ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِڪۡمَةَ وَإِن كَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ۬ مُّبِينٍ

Indeed, Allah conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses (the Qur’an), and purifying them (from sins by their following him), and instructing them (in) the Book (the Qur’an) and Al-Hikmah [the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet (i.e. his legal ways, statements, acts of worship, etc.)], while before that they had been in manifest error.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَٱذۡكُرُواْ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ إِذۡ كُنتُمۡ أَعۡدَآءً۬ فَأَلَّفَ بَيۡنَ قُلُوبِكُمۡ فَأَصۡبَحۡتُم بِنِعۡمَتِهِۦۤ إِخۡوَٲنً۬ا وَكُنتُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَفَا حُفۡرَةٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنۡہَا‌ۗ كَذَٲلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَہۡتَدُونَ

And remember Allah’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus, Allah makes His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.

Allaah [The Most High] said: [ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمَ دِينً۬ا‌ۚ – This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion].

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حُكۡمً۬ا لِّقَوۡمٍ۬ يُوقِنُونَ – And who is better in judgement than Allah for a people who have firm Faith].

Whoever utilises sound intellect to examine what the Messengers brought [i.e. the revelation] – what they commanded and guided the people to, such as knowledge and Awareness of Allaah, the worship of Allaah alone, turning to Allaah in repentance and obedience with true Faith (Islamic Monotheism) and the command to fulfil all the rights [of the people] based on courteous good will, perfecting one’s actions [i.e. based on sincerity to Allaah alone] and treating others with kindness [by sincerely seeking to benefit them though one’s knowledge, wealth or position], and that which they [i.e. Messengers] forbade; then thereafter he examines what those who have deviated from the path of Allaah call to, he will know that good [and its outcomes], success, sound rectification of the hearts and deeds, [sound rectification of] the worldly affairs and [sound rectification of the religious affairs and their end results in the afterlife] are all in agreement with what the Messengers called to. And he will know that the call of those who deviate from the path of Allaah is designed to do away with good manners, whose end result is nothing but complete chaos and a state in which one goes along with lust until the animals become more noble and beneficial than humans. This is no doubt their state of affairs – clearly manifested by what they are upon and what they proclaim with their tongues. Among the most amazing of affairs is that many contemporary writers and politicians seek to remedy the many social ills and try to do so do from many angles, however as for the problem of deviation from Allaah’s Path – whose surge has carried away the majority of young people – they have not rushed to stop it by returning to sound Eemaan and certainty; rather those who have deviated from Allaah’s Path have been abandoned to wander blindly in their misguidance and wavering in beguilement, and thus the social ills they seek to remedy gives birth to other social ills- because if the path to remedying social ills is not based on Eemaan and sound religion, they will increase and become worse. (2)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Everyone with a bit of (sound) intellect knows that the corruption of the world and its ruin occurs due to giving precedence to opinion over the divine revelation and (evil) desires over sound intellect. These two corrupt motives are not entrenched in a heart except that its destruction becomes inevitable nor in a nation except that its affairs are completely corrupted. (3)

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: And even though there is something in the paths of analogical reasoning and reflection that will lead to knowledge, however sometimes it cannot give detail explanation in a dispute between the people of the earth due to the minute details and ambiguities [in that dispute], and at other times due to the fact the people differ when prioritising necessities. Therefore, due to this Allaah [The Most High] commanded [us] to return to the revelation in times of dispute. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً۬ وَٲحِدَةً۬ فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَأَنزَلَ مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِيَحۡكُمَ بَيۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فِيمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُواْ فِيهِ‌ۚ -Mankind were one community (i.e. upon Tawheed and Allaah’s Sharee’ah) and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed]. [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 213] Therefore, Allaah [The Most High] designated the revealed Books [i.e. the Qur’aan being the final of them] as the judge between the people in matters wherein they differ. (4)

Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [may Allaah preserve him] said: If you say that the intellect is to be given precedence over the revelation, then which intellect should we follow? Are the intellects of the people combined in the intellect of one man or do they differ? There are intellects of the philosophers, the atheists, the heretics, the people of evil desires and those who confound truth with falsehood; and due to this one of the Salaf said, “Had the desires been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”; therefore, we say, “Had the intellects been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth. (5)

Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allaah preserve him] said: The wisdom of the Islamic Shariah: Cut off evils and harms to society from their very roots and enjoy the resulting freedom, ease and wholesome life. In contrast: the barbarity and backwardness of commercialising corrosive evils– usurious banking, alcohol, gambling–in order to profit from the masses through affairs in which their ruin and impoverishment lies–and then managing this commercialisation through legislation, policies, guidelines and so on to “limit the harms”. The result? Inescapable enslavement, bondage, disease and ruin of the masses for the enrichment of the few who peddle these vices. Where is the intellect?! (6)

How to Approach the Contemporary Worldly Sciences

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [may allaah preserve him] said: The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop [of water, semen], then he is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period…. [An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth. Hadeeth 4]

It is well known that during that era, the Sahaabah did not know these stages (of development of the human being in the womb) through experimental knowledge, vision [i.e. by way X-rays or ultrasound that enables the human to see something in the womb) or other than that; rather it was simply (a statement of the Prophet) which they (believed and affirmed). They were scholars by way of the revelation sent down to the Prophet and not by way of experimentation (examination). [Sharh Al-Arba’een. Hadeeth 4]

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: We do not say, “We do not give consideration to anything stated by the people in the subject matter regarding medicine, astronomy and the celestial bodies”, however, we do not accept everything they say. If what they say opposes the Book and the (authentic) Sunnah, then indeed we do not accept their statements. We take [i.e. believe and affirm without any doubt] that which is conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah], and we say, “An era will come in which the people will bear witness to the falsity of those statements of theirs – at present – that are in opposition to the Book and Sunnah and (bear witness) to the soundness of that which has been conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah. Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Indeed, that which is stated by the astronomers about the celestial bodies, their sizes and the distance between them, and that which is said about the earth [i.e. by the geologists etc] is categorized into three affairs: [a] That which is backed by the sound knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the Sharee’ah], therefore it is accepted. [b] That which the knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the sharee’ah] declares to be false, therefore it is rejected. [c] That which there is no proof to either accept or reject it, therefore it is unproven until a person from the people of knowledge [i.e. upright scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] examines it [i.e. examines what it indicates based on the Book and Sunnah] to show whether it should be accepted or rejected. As for accepting it without [sound] investigation and observation, but merely accepting it by blindly following them [i.e. the astronomers, geologists etc], then this is impermissible because of the numerous mistakes that occur as a result of that and speaking -without knowledge – about Allaah and that which He has created [i.e. the entire universe and all that is within it]. Therefore, we return to those honest investigators – those students of sound Aqeedah who are well acquainted with both the statements of the upright scholars and the contemporary worldly sciences, such as the likes of Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh Amjad Rafiq [may Allaah preserve him, increase him in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. And likewise preserve all the students and Ahlus Sunnah Aameen].

Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 13

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

The Qur’an is an elucidation of everything, a guidance and mercy for a people who believe. Indeed, when affairs are explained, its wellbeing is accomplished, and every affair that is not explained will be corrupted and deficient. The real state of affairs is a testimony to this. Sound (uncorrupted) intellect agrees with the (unadulterated) divine legislation and bears witness to it; and that whoever opposes the divine legislation has indeed opposed it with an unsound intellect; rather the person has opposed it with ignorance and misguidance, just as Allāh [The Most High] stated about all those whom He has judged to be dwellers of the eternal fire- who wilfully turn away from the divine legislation – that they will say:

[لو كنا نسمع أو نعقل ما كنا في أصحاب السعير – Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!” Then they will confess their sin. So, away with the dwellers of the blazing Fire]. [Surah Al-Mulk. Verses 10-11]

Allāh informed us that they were deprived of the (sound) hearing and intellect. How can one possess (sound) intellect when he associates one of the created things – deficient in every way – as partner with Allāh, The Creator, The One Who Controls and Regulates all affairs of the Universe and The One Singled Out with every Attribute of Perfection?! Rather, what is the intelligence of the person whom the Creator provided with sufficient proofs, which even if a person were to harbour doubt in everything that is perceivable and can be understood by the intellect, he would not have been able to allow his intellect to harbour doubt about Allāh? And this why the Messengers said to their nations:

[أفي الله شك فاطر السماوات والأرض – What! Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth?] [Surah Ibraaheem. Verse 10]

This is affirmed by everyone with a residue of intelligence that to harbour doubt about Allāh is tantamount to foppery, madness and arrogance, and there is no pride greater than it.

And regarding the statement of some of them, “If the intellect and the divine revelation go against each other, we give precedence to the intellect”. (See Footnote a) Indeed, based on what the intelligence of people with real intellect has manifested, this above statement is tantamount to great ignorance because (sound) intellect agrees with divine revelation and bears witness to it. Would a person with (sound) intellect think that the All-Wise One Who gives perfect commands and prohibitions (free from all faults, deficiencies, shortcomings, weaknesses) would give rulings that contradict sound intellect, let alone informs us of things that contradict the real state of affairs?! This is a mighty slander, and therefore Allāh notified the (sound) intellects and (uncorrupted) natural dispositions about the mighty obligations, Islamic Monotheism, Prophethood and the Hereafter. Allāh said:

قل ادعوا الذين زعمتم من دون الله لا يملكون مثقال ذرة في السماوات ولا في الأرض وما لهم فيهما من شرك وما له منهم من ظهير ولا تنفع الشفاعة عنده إلا لمن أذن له

Say: (O Muhammad to those polytheists, pagans, etc.) “Call upon those whom you assert (to be associate gods) besides Allah, they possess not even the weight of an atom (or a small ant), either in the heavens or on the earth, nor have they any share in either, nor there is for Him any supporter from among them. Intercession with Him profits not, except for him whom He permits. [Surah Saba 22-23]

Allāh notified the sound intellects about a matter they know and do not deny, which is that everything that is worshipped besides Him neither possess dominion nor a share of dominion, neither power to support nor intercede. Therefore, when all these four affairs are cut off, the falsity of worshipping others besides Allāh is established. Likewise, Allāh [The Most High] said:

ومن أضل ممن يدعو من دون الله من لا يستجيب له إلى يوم القيامة وهم عن دعائهم غافلون وإذا حشر الناس كانوا لهم أعداء وكانوا بعبادتهم كافرين

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind is gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping. [Surah Al-Ahqaaf 5-6]

Likewise, Allāh [The Most High] said:

ما اتخذ الله من ولد وما كان معه من إله إذا لذهب كل إله بما خلق ولعلا بعضهم على بعض سبحان الله عما يصفون

No son (or offspring or children) did Allah beget, nor is there any ilah (god) along with Him; (if there had been many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have tried to overcome others! Glorified be Allah above all that they attribute to Him! [Surah Al-Muminoon. Aayah 91]

And likewise Allāh notified us that He alone is the One Who created and that there is no Lord besides Him, the One without partner, co-equal, associates and resemblance, and He is free from all imperfections, shortcomings, weaknesses. Allāh said:

أم خلقوا من غير شيء أم هم الخالقون أم خلقوا

السماوات والأرض بل لا يوقنون

Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief. [Surah At-Toor.
