Fear Allah Oh Haasid (Envier)! You are Harming Yourself – Shaykh al-Fawzaan

After explaining Sooratul Iklaas and al-Muawwidhatayn (Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah an-Naas) Shaykh Fawzaan was asked a question regarding envy and the envious person.

Questioner: You mentioned – Allah preserve you – that the envier only harms himself and his envy does not prevent the blessings of Allah for the one who is envied; the question is, why did Allah command us with seeking refuge from the envier if he harms himself?

Shaykh: Because he is afflicted with anxiety and distress more than the the envied one is afflicted, he is afflicted with anxiety and extreme sorrow more than the person who is envied.

Shaykh bin Baz said(1):It has come in the hadeeth that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said,

“Be warned of envy, for indeed envy devours good deeds, just as fire devours wood” (2)

Shaykh bin Baz (Allah have mercy upon him) continues, “Therefore envy is harmful and evil, however it begins with the envier and harms him before anyone else.

Blameworthy Envy – Shaykh Al Uthaymeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

(Blameworthy) Envy: It is said that (envy is when a person) wishes that the blessings of Allah (bestowed) on other him should cease. And it is (also) said that it is to dislike the blessings of Allah (bestowed) on other than him, and this second (saying) is the definition (given by) shaykh ul islaam ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah).

He said: whoever dislikes the blessings of Allah (bestowed) on other than him, then he has envied him, regardless whether he desires that it ceases or not. And what he said is the most correct, due to the statement of the prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam):

“One of you does not truly believe until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself”.

Therefore, how can you dislike for your brother that Allaah has favoured him with knowledge, or wealth, or status, or children or other than that, whilst you do not dislike that for yourself?! This is envy, so it is obligated on you to avoid this.

Do Not Be Jealous of The One Who Benefits Others – Ala Shaykh

Shaykh Sāliḥ Āl ash-Shaykh (hafithahullāh) said:

“Do not be jealous of the one who has memorised more than you or is more knowledgeable than you or is more beneficial to the slaves (of Allāh) than you, rather be happy that someone is establishing the rights of Allāh (عز وجل) and the rights of the slaves.”
