[2] Reflection On Some Affairs Related to The Prayer: [The Statement of Allaah, “My Servant Has Praised Me” etc.] – By lmaam Qayyim

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

When he says, “الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ – All the praises and thanks be to Allaah Lord of the entire existence”, he pauses a little to wait for the response of his Lord with the statement “My servant has praised Me”. When he says, “الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ – The Most Merciful, The Bestower of (special) to the believers”, he waits for the response “My servant has exalted Me”. When he says, “مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ – The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)”, he waits for the response, “My servant has glorified Me”.

What a pleasure for his heart, pleasure of his eyes and happiness of his soul due to the statement of his Lord, “My servant” three times. By Allaah, had there not been the smudge of of desires on the hearts and the murkiness of the souls, they would have sparkle with joy and happiness due to the statement of their Lord, their Originator and object of worship (when He says), “My servant has praised Me”, “My servant has exalted Me” and “My servant has glorified Me”. Then his heart would have had room to draw close attention to these three Names, namely “Allaah”, “Ar-Rabb” and “Ar-Rahmaan”, which are the basis of all the beautiful (and perfect Names). (1)

The complete hadeeth mentioned above is as follows:

Abu Hurairah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Allah [Almighty] said, “I have divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. When the servant says, ‘All praises and thanks be to Allaah, Lord of the entire existence’, Allah says, ‘My servant has praised Me. When he says, ‘The Most Merciful, The Bestower of (special) Mercy to the believers’, Allah says, ‘ My servant has exalted Me’. When he says, ‘The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)’, Allah says, ‘My servant has glorified’. When he says, ‘You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help’, Allah says, ‘This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will have what he has asked for’. When he says, ‘Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom you have favored, neither the path of who earned Your anger nor those who went astray”, Allah says, ‘This is for My servant, and My servant will have what he has asked for'”. (2)

Regarding the statement: “I have divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves” – Meaning, three and half verses in Surah Al-Faatihah are for the Lord and they are the first part of the Surah. And three and half verses are for the servant and they are the last verses. The first part is about praising Allaah and the last part are supplications for the servant”. (3)

[1] Reflection On Some Affairs Related to The Prayer: [Takbeer, Du’aa Al-Istiftaah and Al-Isti’aadhah]-By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated regarding the statement: [ الله أكبر – Allaah is the Greatest], “When one says this, he (or she) has testified to Allaah’s Majesty”.

وَلاَ إِلهَ غَيْرُكَ – I declare You free from all imperfections O Allāh, and all praise is for You. Blessed is Your Name, great and exalted is Your kingdom. And there is none worthy of worship besides You (1)]. When one says this, he (or she) has testified with the heart that the Lord (Allaah) is free from every fault, removed from every shortcoming and worthy of praise with every perfect praise. This necessitates that Allaah is described with every Attribute of perfection and free from every deficiency – blessed be His Name. Neither is His Name mentioned in a small matter except that it becomes big nor in something good except that it increases and becomes blessed; neither mentioned in a state of affliction except that it ceases nor mentioned against a shaytaan except that the shaytaan is repelled, turned away and defeated. The perfection of a name is from the perfection of the one named with it; therefore when it is the fact that nothing can cause harm in the heavens or the earth with (a mention) of His Name, then the affair of the owner of the name is loftier and more exalted.

[وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ – great and exalted is Your kingdom]– Meaning, “Exalted is His Greatness and above everything that is considered great. His affair is exalted above every affair and every authority (kingdom) is completely under His absolute authority, and exalted is He above having a partner in His kingdom, Lordship, deity ship, His actions and Attributes, just as (He informed us) that the believers amongst the Jinn said:

[وَأَنَّهُ ۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةً۬ وَلَا وَلَدً۬ا – ‘And exalted be the Majesty of our Lord, He has taken neither a wife, nor a son (or offspring or children)]. [Surah Al-Jinn. Verse 3]

[أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ – I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil]. When the person says this, he (or she) has turned to Allaah’s all encompassing powerful against the enemy (shaytaan) who wants to cut him (or her), separate him (or her) from the Lord and distance him (or her) from earning the love, pleasure and assistance of the Lord, and leave him (or her) in the worst situation. [An Excerpt from Kitaab as-Salaah. page 344. slightly paraphrased]

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said:

Allaah [The Most High] said: [إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ ۗ – It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah]. [Surah Faatir. Verse 28]

They are (truly) acquainted with the Greatness of Allaah and His Perfection [i.e. the Perfection of Allaah’s Lordship, Names and Attributes, Actions, Judgements, Commands, Prohibitions etc], His Rights and the rights of His slaves [i.e. the rights of mankind, Jinn and all other creatures]. They [truly] distinguish between halaal and haraam, between what is harmful and what is beneficial [i.e. what will benefit the people in their religious and worldly affairs & what will harm them]; so they have a much greater piety, fear of Allaah founded upon knowledge of Allaah’s Greatness, Perfect Sovereignty and Dominion, and being constantly aware of the fact that Allaah knows, hears and sees everything they conceal and proclaim. As for the Jaahil, he is not (or not truly) acquainted with the Greatness of Allaah nor the rights of Allaah. How can he fear [or truly] fear Allaah when he is not (or not truly) acquianted with Allaah’s punishment and what is within the fire of hell, the Barsakh [i.e. the life after death and before the day of judgement], life in the grave and the severe anxiety people will encounter [i.e. due to one’s evil deeds]. [Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ page 240. slightly paraphrased]

The Shaikh also stated: Many people humble themselves to one another more than they humble themselves to Allaah – The Most High, The Most Great. It is neither permissible for a person to be a slave [i.e. by worshipping anyone] except to Allaah, nor humble himself except to the Greatness of Allaah. Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said:

He is Allaah than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He; the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allaah! [High is He] above all that they associate as partners with Him. He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Surah Al-Hashar. Verses 23-24]

Examine those verses in the last part of Surah Al-Hashar! The statement: [هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ – He is Allah than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He)]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah.

The statement: [هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ‌ۖ عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ‌ۖ هُوَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ- He is Allaah, than Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen (open). He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Asmaa Was Sifaat.

And the statement: [هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُ ٱلۡبَارِئُ ٱلۡمُصَوِّرُ‌ۖ – He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms” necessitates Tawheed Ar-Roboobiyyah]. These few verses in the last part of Surah Al-Hashr necessitate all the categories of Tawheed. [Majmoo’ah Wa Rasaail Wa Fataawa 1/22. slightly paraphrased]

An Additional Reminder Regarding An We Hear a Lot In Our Era

We’ve heard many times that the Khawaarij – individuals and groups – utter the statement Allaahu Akbar when committing terrorist acts against Muslims and non-Muslims. This is a wicked affair indeed, because Allaah’s Name can only be mentioned in that which He loves and has legislated. Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَكَبِّرْهُ تَكْبِيراً – And magnify Him (i.e. Allaah) with all the magnificence, [Allahu-Akbar (Allah is the Most Great)]. [Surah Al-Israa. Verse 111]

Imaam Ibn Jareer [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated in his Tafseer of this verse, “And exalt your Lord O Muhammad through what He has commanded you to exalt Him- in speech and deeds; obey Him in what He has commanded you and in that which He has forbidden you [i.e. by keeping away from it]. (2)

Imaam Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqeetee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated in his Tafseer of this verse, “Exalt Him – a powerful exaltation. Manifest the greatness of Allah by strongly guarding what He has commanded and keeping away from what He has forbidden, and hastening towards everything that pleases Him, (and this is) similar to His statement: [لِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ -That you may magnify Allah for His Guidance to you. Meat is Murder!!!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Declaring Things Halaal or Halaal

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: The foundation of the religion of Islaam is that the permissible affairs are those that Allaah and His Messenger have made permissible, and the impermissible affairs are those that Allaah and His Messenger have made impermissible. It is not allowed for anyone to leave the straight path which Allaah sent His Messenger with. Allaah [The Most High] said:

[وَأَنَّ هَـٰذَا صِرَٲطِى مُسۡتَقِيمً۬ا فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ‌ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُواْ ٱلسُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمۡ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ‌ۚ ذَٲلِكُمۡ وَصَّٮٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّڪُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ – And verily, this is my Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not [other] paths, for they will separate you away from His Path. This He has ordained for you that you may become pious].

Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ud [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] drew a line for us and said, “This is Allaah’s Straight Path”. Then he drew lines to its right and left and then said, “These are other paths. Upon every one of them there is a devil calling towards it”. Then he recited: “وَأَنَّ هَـٰذَا صِرَٲطِى مُسۡتَقِيمً۬ا فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ‌ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُواْ ٱلسُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمۡ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ‌ – Indeed this is My Straight Path, so follow it. And do not follow other paths; they will separate you from His Path”. [Hadeeth reported by Imaam Ahmad in Al-Musnad 4437]

Indeed, Allaah mentioned – in Surah Al-An’aam, Soorah Al-A’raaf and other them – those deeds the idol worshipers were rebuked for, when they declared impermissible the things which Allaah [The Most High] did not declare impermissible, such as the Baahirah [i.e. a she-camel whose milk was spared for the idols and nobody was allowed to milk it] and the Saa’ibah [i.e. a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods, e.g. idols, etc., and nothing was allowed to be carried on it]. They [also] declared permissible those [deeds] which Allaah declared impermissible, such as the killing of their children and they instituted a religion which Allaah did not allow. Allaah [The Most High] said: [أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَڪَـٰٓؤُاْ شَرَعُواْ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱلدِّينِ مَا لَمۡ يَأۡذَنۢ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ – Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed]. (1)

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Mad’khalee [may Allaah preserve him] stated about lies and liars: All these people carry mighty lies – which cannot be enumerated here – related to affairs of legislation and in declaring what is lawful and unlawful, such as what Allaah has stated regarding the pagan Arabs, who made judgements about the Bahirah [a she-camel whose milk was spared for the idols and that nobody was allowed to milk it] or a Sa’ibah [a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods and that nothing was allowed to be carried on it], or a Wasilah [a she-camel set free for idols because it has given birth to a she-camel at its first delivery and then again gives birth to a she-camel at its second delivery]. Allaah [تعالى ] stated in declaring this a lie:

[مَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَحِيرَةٍ۬ وَلَا سَآٮِٕبَةٍ۬ وَلَا وَصِيلَةٍ۬ وَلَا حَامٍ۬‌ۙ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ‌ۖ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡقِلُونَ – Allah has not instituted things like Bahirah (a she-camel whose milk was spared for the idols and nobody was allowed to milk it) or a Sa’ibah (a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods, e.g. idols, etc., and nothing was allowed to be carried on it), or a Wasilah (a she-camel set free for idols because it has given birth to a she-camel at its first delivery and then again gives birth to a she-camel at its second delivery) or a Ham (a stallion-camel freed from work for their idols, after it had finished a number of copulations assigned for it, all these animals were liberated in honour of idols as practised by pagan Arabs in the pre-Islamic period). But those who disbelieve invent lies against Allah, and most of them have no understanding]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 103]

By Allaah, they are liars and they are foolish people deprived of sound intellect. Allaah said:

So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you. And be grateful for the Graces of Allah, if it is He Whom you worship. He has forbidden you only Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal), blood, the flesh of swine, and any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah (or has been slaughtered for idols etc. or on which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: “This is lawful and this is forbidden,” so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper. A passing brief enjoyment (will be theirs), but they will have a painful torment. [Surah An-Nahl. Verses 114-117]

This was an address to the Arabs who instituted things like Bahirah or a Sa’ibah, and due to this Allaah declared this affair of theirs a lie, determined the unlawful things in relation to that which they stated, made it known that what they declared unlawful or lawful is tantamount to lies invented against Allaah, that the liars will not be successful, their enjoyment through lies and slanders is a brief enjoyment and an eternal punishment awaits them – a painful punishment. (2)

Indeed, the above suffices as rebuke against the one who declares that ‘Meat is Murder’ whilst intending by way of such statement that meat should be banned or that it is inhumane to slaughter those animals – for food -which Allaah has permitted. The enemies of the Prophets are well-known for portraying evil as good and good as evil.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayaateen (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications.” [Surah Al-An’aam: Ayah 112]

Allaah [Glorified be He] stated that they aid one another in opposing the command of the Prophets with what some of them inspire others of adorned speech, so that the gullible and feeble minded people are misled by it. He [The Most High] stated the reason behind a perpetrator’s [adorned speech] and the reason why it is accepted by the people; then He [The Most High] mentioned [in ayah 113 Al-An’aam] the effects it has on those ignorant souls. When those souls incline towards such adorned speech and become pleased with it, they carry out what it calls them to do -in speech and action. Therefore, ponder upon these verses and the sublime meanings they convey, for they clarify the roots of false principles and alert a person against them. And if you ponder upon the statements of the people of falsehood, you will indeed find them clothed with expressions and presented in a good light with sophisticated terms, which are quickly accepted by those deprived of sound discernment-to the extent that the wicked sinners would give [good] names to the greatest types of wicked deeds. The Intent Behind Dhikr – By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Allaah [The Most High] said:

فَٱذۡكُرُونِىٓ أَذۡكُرۡكُمۡ وَٱشۡڪُرُواْ لِى وَلَا تَكۡفُرُونِ

Therefore, remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Verse 152]

The intent behind Dhikr is not merely to remember (Allaah) with one’s tongue, rather it is remembrance with the heart and the tongue. Remembrance of Allaah includes remembering Him by His Names and Attributes, His commandments, His prohibitions and His speech. This necessitates that a person should have knowledge and awareness of Allaah (I), belief in Allaah, belief in Allaah’s Perfect and Lofty Attributes, as well as (constantly) praising Allaah with various types of praise [i.e. based on what Allaah has legislated in the authentic texts of the Sharee’ah and not by way of bidah]. And this cannot be accomplished except through Tawheed [i.e. singling Allaah out in His Lordship, Names and Attributes, and devote all acts of worship to Allaah alone]. True Remembrance of Allaah necessitates all of this, as well as remembering the blessings and favours, which Allaah has bestowed upon His creatures and His kindness towards them.

As for Shukr [i.e. to be grateful or thankful to Allaah], it is to act in obedience to Allaah and seeking to draw close to Him through those apparent (actions of the limbs) and (deeds of the heart) that are beloved to Him. The religion is based on these two – remembrance of Allaah, which necessitates having knowledge and awareness of Allaah, and being grateful to Him, which necessitates obedience to Him through acts of worship and [refraining from disobedience]. This is the purpose behind the creation of the Jinn, mankind, the heavens and the earth. It is the reason for which reward and punishment are determined; [the reason for which] Allaah revealed the Books and sent the Messengers. It is the truth for which the heavens, the earth and what is between them were created, and what is in opposition to it is falsehood, such as the assumption held by the enemies of Allaah that there is no purpose behind the creation [free is Allaah from what they attribute to Him]. Allaah [The Most High] said:

[وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَا بَـٰطِلاً۬‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ‌ۚ – And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them without purpose! That is the assumption of those who disbelieve!]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ
مَا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ

And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play; We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones).

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَأَتِيَةٌ۬‌ۖ – And We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and the Hour is surely coming…]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٲلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۚ – Allah did not create this but in truth]. Allaah [The Most High] said: Allaah [The Most High] said: [أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى – Does man think that he will be left Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him]?
Allaah [The Most High] said: [أَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ أَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ عَبَثً۬ا وَأَنَّكُمۡ إِلَيۡنَا لَا تُرۡجَعُونَ – Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ – And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Allah has made the Ka’bah, the Sacred House, an asylum of security and Hajj and ‘Umrah (pilgrimage) for mankind, and also the Sacred Month and the animals of offerings and the garlanded (people or animals, etc. marked with the garlands on their necks made from the outer part of the stem of the Makkah trees for their security), that you may know that Allah has knowledge of all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and that Allah is the All-Knower of each and everything.

Therefore, based on what has [already] been mentioned it has been established that the purpose behind the creation and command is so that Allaah is remembered and thanked. Allaah is to be remembered and not forgotten, and He should be thanked and one should not be ungrateful to Him. Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] remembers the one who remembers Him, and He is Ready to appreciate good deeds and to recompense the one who is grateful to Him. Remembrance of Allaah is the reason Allaah remembers the one who does so. (II) And being grateful to Allaah is the reason behind which a person is given an increase in blessings and favours. (III)

Remembrance of Allaah is to be carried out with the heart and tongue; gratefulness is to be carried out with one’s heart- out of love for Allaah and constantly turning to Him in repentance and obedience with true faith [Islamic Monotheism]. Extolling and praising Him is to be carried out with one’s tongue and being obedient to Him [by performing acts of obedience]. [An Excerpt from ‘Al-Fawaa’id’ page 192-194. slightly paraphrased]

Footnotes:

(I):Knowledge and Awareness of Allaah: Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said, ‘’ Marifatullaah” – Knowledge and awareness of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, with the heart, with such knowledge and awareness that it makes the person accept whatever He has prescribed and laid down, and causes him to submit to that, and to judge by the Prescribed Laws (Sharee’ah) which His Messenger Muhammad came with. The servant increases in knowledge and awareness of His Lord by considering the clear signs pertaining to the deen found in the book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and in the Sunnah of His Messenger, and also by considering the signs which Allaah has provided for us in the creation. So whenever a person examines and considers these signs he will increase in his knowledge and awareness of His creator and His God, who alone has the right to all his worship. Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, says “And on the earth there are signs for those with certain belief, and also in your own selves. Will you not then consider?” [Soorah adh Dhaariyaat: 20-21] [Translated by Ustaadh Abu Talhah Dawud Burbank (may Allaah grant him and his wife abundant mercy…Aameen)]

(II): [فَٱذۡكُرُونِىٓ أَذۡكُرۡكُمۡ وَٱشۡڪُرُواْ لِى وَلَا تَكۡفُرُونِ – Therefore, remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me]: Ibn Abbaas and Ibn Jubayr said that this Aayah means, ”Remember Me by obeying Me and I [Allaah] will remember you by granting you My Maghfirah. [Zaadul Maseer Fee Ilmit-Tafseer’by Imaam Ibnul Jawzi. Publisher: Daar Ibn Hazm. 1st Edition 1424AH (2002)]

Al-Maghfirah: It necessitates that Allaah will protect you from the evil consequences of your sins, accept [your deeds, repentance etc], grant you His pleasure and favours, show you kindness and generosity etc. [Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 14/140]

(III): [And be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me]: Imaam Ibnul Qayyim said, ”And being grateful to Allaah is the reason behind which a person is given an increase in blessings and favours.” [ Al-Fawaa’id’ page 192-194]. Question: What are some of the evil consequences if a person persists upon disobedience, whilst he or she receives more blessings and favours from Allaah? Answer: Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ

Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not. And I respite them; certainly My Plan is strong.

[سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم – We shall gradually seize them with punishment] – by granting them plentiful provision and respite until they think that they will neither be taken to task for their disobedience nor punished, so they increase in disbelief and transgression, and evil upon evil. And through this their punishment is increased and multiplied, so they harm themselves in ways they perceive not. This is why Allaah said: [إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ -certainly My Plan is strong]. The Origin of Shirk [to Associate Partners With Allaah In Worship or Direct Acts of Worship to Other Than Allaah, or Devote Acts of Worship to Allaah and Others]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Mankind were one community and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed. And only those to whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it after clear proofs had come unto them through hatred, one to another. Then Allah by His Leave guided those who believed to the truth of that wherein they differed. And Allah guides whom He wills to a Straight Path. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 213]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

[وَمَا كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ إِلَّآ أُمَّةً۬ وَٲحِدَةً۬ فَٱخۡتَلَفُواْ‌ۚ وَلَوۡلَا ڪَلِمَةٌ۬ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِىَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ فِيمَا فِيهِ يَخۡتَلِفُونَ – Mankind were but one community (i.e. on one religion – Islamic Monotheism), then they differed (later), and had not it been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord, it would have been settled between them regarding what they differed]. [Surah Yunus. Aayah 19]

Ibn Abbaas [may Allaah be pleased with him and his father] said, ”There were ten generations between Nooh and Aadam – all of them used to be upon the true path [i.e. upon Islaam – worshipping Allaah alone], then they differed and started worshipping idols, false deities and images, so Allaah sent Messengers with clear proofs and evidences. [Ref 1]

Shirk [i.e. to associate partners with Allaah in worship or direct acts of worship to other than Allaah, or devote acts of worship Allaah and others] first started amongst the people of Prophet Nuh [peace be upon him] when they exaggerated (the status) of the righteous people and turned away from the call of their Prophet out of pride. [Allaah said that Nuh said that his people said]:

[وَقَالُواْ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمۡ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّ۬ا وَلَا سُوَاعً۬ا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسۡرً۬ا -And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya’uq, nor Nasr]. [Ref 2]

Ibn Abbaas [may Allaah be pleased with him and his father] said that these were the names of pious people amongst the people of Nuh, and when they died, shaytaan inspired their people to (prepare) and place idols at the places where they used to sit, and to call those idols by their names. They did so, but did not worship them until those people (who initiated them) had died and the origin of the idols had become obscure, whereupon people began worshipping them. [Ref 3]

Shirk – [The Greatest Wrong and Cause of Destruction In This Life and The Next]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth). [Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 36]

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said: Shirk is the greatest sin that can be committed in disobedience to Allaah. The Prophets brought the greatest knowledge and that is the knowledge of Tawheed, and they warned against the greatest wrong doing and that is to ascribed partners to Allaah. Associating partners to (Allaah in worship) is a great wrong indeed] [Surah Luqmaan’ Aayah 13] [Ref 4]

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: What is Dhulm [wrongdoing, injustice or oppression?] Dhulm is of three types according to the people of knowledge (i.e. the scholars):

First: The greatest of them is shirk, and why is shirk referred as Dhulm? That is because the basis of injustice is to place something in other than its rightful place. The meaning of shirk is to devote acts of worship to other than its rightful place and this is the greatest injustice, because when they devoted acts of worship to other than its rightful place and to those who are not deserving of it, they equated the created (beings) to the Creator and a weak one (i.e. a created being) to Al-Qawiy [The One Perfect in Strength (i.e. Allaah)], who is not unable to do anything. Therefore, is there any greater injustice after this?

The second type of Dhulm is committed when a person oppresses himself by committing sins. A sinner oppresses himself because he exposes himself to punishment, even though it is obligated on his to save himself and place himself in an appropriate situation and that is to obey Allaah etc

The third type of Dhulm is committed when a person oppresses others by taking their wealth (unlawfully), backbiting them, spreading tales about them, stealing their wealth or violating their honour through backbiting, tale carrying, slander or shedding their blood by way of unlawful murder, beating them, inflicting injuries, degrading them without right etc [Ref 5]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

حُنَفَآءَ لِلَّهِ غَيۡرَ مُشۡرِكِينَ بِهِۦ‌ۚ وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَخۡطَفُهُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ أَوۡ تَهۡوِى بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِى مَكَانٍ۬ سَحِيقٍ۬

Hunafaa’ Lillaah [i.e. worship none but Allaah], not associating partners [in worship, etc.] with Him; and whoever associates partners to Allaah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far-off place]. [Surah Al-Hajj. Aayah 31]

[حُنَفَآءَ لِلَّهِ ]- Meaning: turn to Allaah (in complete submission), worship Allaah alone and turn away from other than that. [غَيۡرَ مُشۡرِكِينَ بِهِۦ‌ۚ – not associating partners (in worship, etc.) with Him]; [وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ – and whoever associates partners to Allaah], then [فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَخۡطَفُهُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ أَوۡ تَهۡوِى بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِى مَكَانٍ۬ سَحِيقٍ۬ – it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place].

This is the situation of the one who associates partners with Allaah in worship, because Eemaan is like the sky- protected and raised high, so whoever abandons Eemaan is like one who has fallen from the sky and is exposed to evil consequences and disasters and snatched by birds that rip his limbs. So, when the one who associates partners with Allaah in worship abandons the protection of Eemaan, the devils snatch him from every direction and rip him apart, ruining both his religion and worldly life [i.e. because this worldly life is a place to perform righteous deeds for entry into paradise, but Shirk nullifies all those good deeds]. [Ref 6]

Allaah made it known in this verse that indeed the one who associates partners with Allaah and dies without repenting, then indeed he has fallen into destruction – neither does he have a way out of it nor can he be saved. He resembles someone who falls from the sky, lands on the earth and all his body is rip apart; then the birds snatch them away and the wind throws them to a far-off place due to the intense (manner in which the) wind blew his ripped body parts. So, whoever is described as one in such a situation, then indeed neither can he hope for a way out nor can he desire safety; rather he is definitely destroyed, because what normally happens is that the one who falls from the sky and lands on the earth does not reach the earth except that his body parts are ripped apart. The birds snatch his body parts and disperse with them, or the wind throws him to a far-away place, then this is an inevitable destruction and there is no way of avoiding it.

And that which is established in this noble verse – regarding the fact that the one who ascribes partners with Allaah is destroyed – has also been mentioned clearly in another place in the Qur’aan, such as the statement of Allaah: [إِنَّهُ ۥ مَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ وَمَأۡوَٮٰهُ ٱلنَّارُ‌ۖ – Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 72]

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِ – Verily, Allah does not forgive (a person the sin of associating partners with Him in worship), but He forgives lesser than that to whomsover He wills]. [Surah An-Nisaa Aayah 48]

And indeed there are other verses (showing) that this inescapable destruction applies to the one who dies upon shirk and did not repent. As for the one who repents before death, then indeed Allaah forgives Him because submission to Allaah by worshipping Him alone wipes away that which was before it [i.e. shirk]. There are a number of verses that indicate to this, such as the statement of Allaah: [قُل لِّلَّذِينَ ڪَفَرُوٓاْ إِن يَنتَهُواْ يُغۡفَرۡ لَهُم مَّا قَدۡ سَلَفَ – Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven]. [Surah Al-Anfaal. Aayah 38]

Allaah said: [وَإِنِّى لَغَفَّارٌ۬ لِّمَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحً۬ا – And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds]. [Surah Taahaa. Aayah 82]

However, if one’s repentance is at the time of death [i.e. when the soul reaches the throat], it will not benefit him. [Ref 7]

Blindly Following Ancestors:

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said:

Indeed, polytheistic [acts and beliefs] has become rife in this Ummah due to the people being distanced from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah; due to blindly following their forefathers without guidance; exaggerating the status of the dead people [i.e. either pious people or those whom they consider to be pious] and building [shrines and tombs over their] graves; and due to being ignorant of the [true] Islaam which Allaah commanded His Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] to convey, just as Umar Ibnul Khattaab [radiyallaahu anhu] said: “Verily, the [firm] foundations of Islam will be destroyed one after the other when arises in Islam a people who do not know what Jahiliyyah is [i.e. the acts and beliefs that were prevalent during the pre-Islamic era] [ref 8] [NB: Refer to ref 8 at the end of this article regarding the term Al-Jaahiliyyah by the Shaikh Fawzaan]

[And likewise, polytheistic practices and beliefs have become rife in the Ummah] due to the spread of Shubhah [i.e. doubts that are made to resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality] and stories that have misguided the majority of the people. And among these [Shubhah- doubts made to resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality] is what the people of Shirk of the past and those within this Ummah at present utilise as proof – that they follow the path of their fathers and ancestors, and that they inherited this creed [i.e. polytheistic beliefs and practices] from them, just as Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَكَذَٲلِكَ مَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِى قَرۡيَةٍ۬ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٍ۬ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ

And similarly, We sent not a warner before you (O Muhammad) to any town (people) but the luxurious ones among them said: “We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we will indeed follow their footsteps]”. [Az-Zukhruf Ayah 23]

Everyone who is unable to establish proofs for his claim returns to this proof, even though it is a useless proof that has no weight in the arena of [sound] discussion; for indeed those ancestors they blindly follow were not upon [upright] guidance. Therefore, whoever [is upon such a state of affairs], it is not permissible to follow him and take him as an example. Allaah [The Most High] said:

[أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَآؤُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَلَا يَہۡتَدُونَ – Even though their fathers had no knowledge whatsoever and no guidance]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah’ Aayah 104]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَآؤُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡقِلُونَ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَلَا يَهۡتَدُونَ

Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided? [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 170]

Therefore, following ancestors is only praiseworthy if they were upon the truth. Allaah [The Most High] said that Yusuf [alayhis salaam] said:

“And I have followed the religion of my fathers , – Ibrahim (Abraham), Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya’qub (Jacob), and never could we attribute any partners whatsoever to Allah. This is from the Grace of Allah to us and to mankind, but most men thank not (i.e. they neither believe in Allah, nor worship Him). [Surah Yusuf’ Aayah 38]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّبَعَتۡہُمۡ ذُرِّيَّتُہُم بِإِيمَـٰنٍ أَلۡحَقۡنَا بِہِمۡ

And those who believe and whose offspring follow them in Faith, to them shall We join their offspring [i.e. in paradise]. [Surah At-Tur’ Aayah 21]

This doubt was embedded in the souls of the polytheists and they utilised it to oppose the call of the Prophets [alayhimus salaam]. Allaah [The Most High] informed us about Nuh and His people:

And indeed We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people, and he said: “O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him (Islamic Monotheism). Will you not then be afraid (of Him i.e. of His Punishment because of worshipping others besides Him)?” But the chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said: “He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing among our fathers of old. [Surah Al-Muminoon’ Aayaat 23-24]

So, they used as proof that which their ancestors were upon to oppose that which their Prophet Nuh brought. Allaah informed us that the people of Saaleh said to him: [أَتَنۡهَٮٰنَآ أَن نَّعۡبُدَ مَا يَعۡبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَا – Do you (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped?] [Surah Hud’ Aayah 62]
And Allaah said that the people of Shu’aib said to him [i.e. Shu’aib]:

[أَصَلَوٰتُكَ تَأۡمُرُكَ أَن نَّتۡرُكَ مَا يَعۡبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَآ – Does your Salat (prayer) (i.e. the prayers which you offer has spoiled your mind, so you) command that we leave off what our fathers used to worship]. [Surah Hud’ Aayah 87]

And Allaah informed us about Ibraaheem [alayhis-salaam] and his people when he silenced them with clear proofs:

“What do you worship? They said: “We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted. He said: “Do they hear you, when you call (on them)? “Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?” They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing so. [Surah Ash-Shu’araa’ Aayaat 70-74]
This is the nature of disbelief! Its people do not have any proof by way of which to repel the truth except these flimsy proofs. [Ref 9]

Shirk Will Occur In Amongst The Muslims

Among their Shubhah [i.e. doubts portrayed as truth but are falsehood in reality] is the claim that Shirk will not occur in the Ummah of Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] whilst they still testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] is the Messenger of Allaah, and that what takes place between them [i.e. grave worshippers] and the Awliyaa [i.e. worshipping the graves of the awliyaa] is not tantamount to Shirk.

Response to this Shubhah: Indeed, the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] informed us that certainly the doubts of the Jews and Christians will appear in this Ummah, such as the fact that they [i.e. Jews and Christians] took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allaah.

Refer to explanation of this affair on this link:  http://www.salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm/sad/%E2%80%A6/images/frm/downloads/pdf/frm/nbq/nbq/sad/downloads/pdf/sp.cfm?subsecID=MNJ05&articleID=MNJ050004&articlePages=1

The Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, ‘’You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you- hand span by hand span, cubit by cubit, to the extent that if they entered a lizard’s hole, you will also enter it.’’ We [i.e. the Sahaabah] said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! Is it the Jews and Christians?’ He said, ‘Who else?’” [Al-Bukhaari’ Number 1397]

Therefore, the Prophet informed us that some of the people in his Ummah will do what the previous nations did [i.e. misguidance] in religion, customs and the ways in which they govern their affairs. Indeed, shirk occurred in the nations of the past and likewise it has occurred in this Ummah. Indeed, what the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] told us has occurred, for here [i.e. various places in the Muslim lands] are the graves being worshipped besides Allaah with various types of worship. And the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] informed us that the end of time will not come until a part of his Ummah attach themselves to those who associate partners with Allaah in wworship and until groups from his Ummah worship idols. [Abu Dawud 4252] [Ref 10]

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said:

The Muslims must be acquainted with the knowledge of Tawheed [pure Islamic monotheism] and Shirk. Shirk [i.e. to associate partners with Allaah in worship] is the gravest sin that can be committed in disobedience to Allaah. The Prophets brought the greatest [aspect] of knowledge, which is the knowledge of Tawheed, and they warned against the greatest wrong doing, which is to associate partners to Allaah. Associating partners to (Allaah in worship) is a great wrong indeed] [Surah Luqmaan’ Aayah 13]

This is an affair which many of the callers to Islaam have turn away from at present and do not give it importance. The knowledge of Tawheed is the first thing they snub and flee from; [and likewise] Shirk is the first thing they decline [to address] when seeking to guide the Ummah. Neither do they warn the people nor caution them against this greatest danger known to mankind [i.e. Shirk]. Tawheed is the greatest [knowledge] brought by Prophets as glad tidings, but they [i.e. many of the callers] do not convey it; rather the greatest affair to them is modern politics.

The knowledge of Tawheed is the affair by way of which this Ummah is distinguished [in all virtuous traits] – sincerity in worshipping Allaah alone, purifying all the Islamic [arenas, sources of knowledge, practices, views, thoughts, places, aims, goals etc] from the filth and impurity of Shirk. Neither is there anything more impure [i.e. corrupts the heart, deeds, manners, thoughts, ideas, intentions, goals, aims etc] nor filthier than shirk, so why do we not purity the Ummah from this impurity and filth? Why do those [many] callers to Islaam deliberately feign ignorance of this impurity, in which the people wander blindly and belittle its severity, even though there is nothing equal to its [filthiness and impurity]?

It is obligated on the Muslims to free themselves from the filth of shirk and sincerely worship Allaah alone, so that they become the cleanest people and purest [i.e. in creed, deeds, thoughts, views, intentions, goals, aims etc]. And through this, they will be distinguished [in every virtuous trait].
If the mosques of the Muslims in the Islamic world are filled with graves- even though the Messenger severely cursed those who turn graves into places of worship- and those [many] callers to Islaam have not taken any steps to confront this filthy practice, then there can be no betrayal and deception -against the ummah- greater than this. [Allaah said]:

Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers. [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 159]

The greatest clear proofs are Tawheed [pure Islamic monotheism] and the guidance that will remove the people from Shirk. Therefore, O callers to Islaam! Fear Allaah. Safeguard the Muslims from this greatest danger and raise them to the highest station in this worldly life – the station of Tawheed; for [indeed] there is no station loftier than the station of Tawheed. Tawheed is the greatest station in the entire universe and shirk is the lowest. [Ref 11]

The Tremendous Effects of Tawheed at The Time of Departure From This World
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

The Shahaadah [i.e. to testify that ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah] at the time of death wipes away one’s evil deeds. This is because the one who utters it at the time of departure from this world does so with certainty and knowledge of its true meaning. All his desires [i.e. desire for the worldly life] come to an end and his rebellious soul [becomes] mild and submissive after being in [a state of] refusal and disobedience- a [state of] approval after turning away and a state of humility after being held in high esteem. The [heart’s and the soul’s] eagerness for the worldly life and its merits departs and distances [from everything] whilst in the presence of its Lord, Originator and true Protector; humble in the presence of its Lord, hopeful of pardon, forgiveness and mercy.

Belief in the Oneness of Allaah-[i.e. the belief in the Oneness of Allaah’s Lordship (that Allaah alone is the creator, provider and the one in control of all the affairs of the universe); and that Allaah alone has perfect Names and Attributes and that none is similar to Allaah; and that Allaah alone has the right to be worshipped]-frees and distances the soul from that which leads to Shirk [polytheism] and manifests the reality of its falsity. Therefore, those wishes which the soul busied itself with [in the worldly life] ceases [at the time of departure from this world] and all its concern is [directed towards] the One it is certain to meet [i.e. Allaah].

The person [who is blessed with the ability to utter this testimony of faith] focuses his attention completely on Allaah- turns to Allaah with his soul and desire and submits to Allaah alone, inwardly and outwardly. The person’s hidden affair [i.e. the heart and soul] and outward affair [i.e. what he proclaims] testify to the same thing, so he sincerely says: “None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah.” His heart is freed from attachment to other than Allaah -all the worldly [desires] leaves the heart because he is about to stand in Allaah’s presence. The intensity of his desire [for the worldly life] is extinguished and the heart is filled with the [desire for] the afterlife, and thus it becomes the attention of his eyes and the worldly life is forgotten. [When] this sincere testimony is his last deed, it purifies him from sins and thus Allaah enters [him into a noble position]. That is because he meets Allaah with a truthful and pure testimony, whose outward manifestation is in agreement with [what is hidden in the heart and soul].

If a person made this [type] of testimony during the time of well-being [i.e. whilst residing in the worldly life], he would not have placed great importance on worldly desires, rather he would have attached himself to Allaah alone; but [the fact of the matter is that] he made this testimony [in the worldly life] with a heart filled with desires, love of life and its means of subsistence. [Ref 8: What is Al-Jaahiliyyah? What is Al-Jaahiliyyah? Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: Al-Jaahiliyyah: It is derived from al-Jahl (ignorance). It is an absence of knowledge, and the intent behind it is the state of affairs before Islaam. The state of affairs before the advent of Muhammad (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) is (referred to as) Al-Jaahiliyyah because they were in ignorance and misguidance in the affairs of worship, dealings, food, drink, marriage and other than that. They were in ignorance and misguidance due to the long period between Eesaa and Muhammad (i.e. the absence of a messenger).
This was a period of over four hundred years during which the divine message stopped. The divine message was obscured, and ignorance and misguidance became widespread. The people worshiped idols, trees, stones, false deities, the Jinn and humans. They worshiped the Angels, the Awliyaa and the righteous people, and they were upon divergent paths with regards to acts of worship.

And with regards to the affair of halaal and haraam, they did not distinguish between good and filth; rather they used to deal with Ribaa. The Ribaa Al-Jaahiliyyah (The Pre-Islamic Usury) was: When they used to settle a debt with a debtor, they would say: “Either you settle the debt, or we increase the debt and double the time it (should be paid)”. This was the Pre-Islamic Usury and it used to be predominant in their dealings. They used to gather wealth through forbidden means–through pillage, plunder, robbery and devouring people’s wealth through falsehood.
And with regards to food, they made dead animals and blood lawful; they used to eat dead animals, blood and repugnant things. And with regards to their relationship between one another, they used to kill and fight one another over the most trivial thing. They neither had a leader nor a state–they were either under the authority of tribal systems or under the authority of the Persians and the Romans. The powerful used to encroach upon (the rights of the weak), and the oppressor used to transgress the limits, and no one stopped him.

This was Al-Jaahiliyyah (The Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance). They were upon ignorance in all aspects (of life) and the greatest of that (ignorance) was with regards to worship and creed. They used to be upon the creed of Shirk, rejected the (Resurrection) and the Divine Message (of the Messengers). (Allaah said that) they used to say: [مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ بَشَرٍ مِنْ شَيْءٍ – Nothing did Allaah send down to any human being (by revelation) 6:91]

This was their state in Al-Jaahiliyyah (The Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance); then, Allaah (Glorified Be He) sent Muhammad (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) with the Guidance and the Religion of Truth. Allaah stated:[هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ – It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with Al Hudaa (the Guidance) and Deenul Haqq (the religion of truth -Islaam) 9:33]
‘Hudaa’ is beneficial knowledge and ‘Deenul Haqq’ is righteous action. Allaah (Glorified Be He) sent His prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) with beneficial knowledge and righteous action, so because of the advent of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) Al-Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) ceased to exist for ever walil-laahil Hamd, and knowledge and guidance arrived.
The ‘Jaahiliyyah Aamma’ (The Pre-Islamic ignorance that was widespread in the world and touched every aspect of life) has ceased to exist; but it remains with some people or with some of the tribes, or in some of the lands. This is Jaahiliyyah Juz-i (a portion of Pre-Islamic Ignorance), (but) as for the ‘Jahiliyyah Aamma’, this has ceased to exist after the advent of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), but some characteristics of Pre-Islamic ignorance remain with some of the people due to the saying of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam): “Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples’ genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and wailing (i.e. for the dead)’’ (reported by Muslim).” This remains, but it is a portion, (but) as for the Jaahiliyyah Aamma, it has ceased to exist.

So due to this, it is not permissible to say that the people are in Jaahiliyyah (Pre-Islamic ignorance). Some (people) say: “(the people) are in a state of Pre-Islamic ignorance that is more severe than the one before the sending of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)”…. The meaning of this (statement of theirs) is a denial of what the Messenger (sallal-laahu-layhi-wasallam) came with; it is a denial of the Qur’aan, the Sunnah of the Prophet and the abundant knowledge within our hands. Its meaning is that we are in Al-Jaahiliyyah (Pre-Islamic ignorance). This is a mistake, the people are not in Al-Jaahiliyyah, walil-laahil Hamd, but there remains some of the characteristics of Al-Jaahiliyyah in some individuals, in some nation states and in some tribes; but this is a specific Jaahiliyyah. Therefore, it is incumbent to be acquainted with this affair. https://salaficentre.com/2013/09/updated-the-people-used-to-ask-about-the-good-hudhaifah-radiyallaahu-anhu/

Brief Admonition to The Heedless And Ignoramuses Who Participate In So-called 10th-Anniversary Commemorations of a Country’s So-called Arab Spring

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Do Not Join The Ignoramuses and The Heedless In Their Gathering of Falsehood

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَشۡهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِٱللَّغۡوِ مَرُّواْ ڪِرَامً۬ا

And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity. [Surah Al-Furqan. Aayah 72]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: They do not attend the gatherings of falsehood and when go past anything that is utilized in falsehood – whether in speech or actions,  they behave in an honorable manner and do not stand there to witness or incline towards it. [Ref 1]

Revolutions Are Not From Islaam, So Why Participate In Celebrations?!

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] was asked: Going out to demonstrations, (initiating) revolutions and nurturing the youth upon it; is this from the methodology of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah or not, whether (carried) out within or outside the Muslim countries? Answer: This is the methodology of Marx (i.e. Carl Marx), Lenin (i.e. Vladimir Lenin) and those similar to them. It is not from the Islamic methodology. Revolutions, bloodshed, trials and troubles are Marx’s and Lenin’s school of thought. [Ref 2]

Do You Remember How Many Muslims Lost Their Lives During The So-called Arab Spring?!

Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: ”The termination of the world means less to Allah than the killing of a Muslim [i.e. without right]”. [Ref 3]

It Was Not The Spring of The Muslims, Rather It Was The Spring of The Disbelievers

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] was asked: ”What do you think about what is now called the Arab Spring?”

Answer: By Allaah, the spring has not brought us any remedy (or brought us any cure, restored anything good etc). It has not brought us any remedy except killing. It has not brought us any remedy except trial. The unbelievers call it this [i.e. Arab spring]. The Muslims do not call this spring, rather they call it trial and evils. It is true that it is a spring for the unbelievers because they harm Muslims by way of it and they are pleased with what harms Muslims. This pleases them and it is their spring. [Ref 4] [End of quote]

Therefore, it would be better that these people repent for their sins, obey their present rulers in good and never call to rebellion again. We ask Allaah to distance us and them from every falsehood Aameen.

The Greatest Type of At-Tawakkul -Reliance upon Allaah- by Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

The greatest type of reliance upon Allaah is: Reliance upon Allaah in (seeking) guidance; establishing Tawheed; adhering to the path of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and striving against the people of falsehood. This is the Tawukkul of the Messengers and particularly that of their (true) followers.
