[3] Tyranny and Some Characteristics of Tyrants

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Has not the news reached you, of those before you, the people of Nuh (Noah), and ‘Ad, and Thamud? And those after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came their Messengers with clear proofs, but they put their hands in their mouths (biting them from anger) and said: “Verily, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and we are really in grave doubt as to that to which you invite us (i.e. Islamic Monotheism).” Their Messengers said: “What! Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you (to Monotheism and to be obedient to Allah) that He may forgive you of your sins and give you respite for a term appointed.” They said: “You are no more than human beings like us! You wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Then bring us a clear authority i.e. a clear proof of what you say).” Their Messengers said to them: “We are no more than human beings like you, but Allah bestows His Grace to whom He wills of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you an authority (proof) except by the Permission of Allah. And in Allah (Alone) let the believers put their trust. And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us our ways. And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (Alone) let those who trust, put their trust.”

And those who disbelieved, said to their Messengers: “Surely, we shall drive you out of our land, or you shall return to our religion.” So their Lord inspired them: “Truly, We shall destroy the Zalimun (wrong-doers.). And indeed, We shall make you dwell in the land after them. This is for him who fears standing before Me (on the Day of Resurrection or fears My Punishment) and also fears My Threat.” But they (the Messengers) sought victory and help [from their Lord (Allah)], and every obstinate, arrogant tyrant was brought to a complete loss and destruction. In front of Him (every obstinate, arrogant tyrant) is Hell, and he will be made to drink boiling, festering water. He will sip it unwillingly, and he will find a great difficulty to swallow it down his throat , and death will come to him from every side, yet he will not die and in front of him, will be a great torment. [Surah Ibraaheem. Aayaat 9-17]

Regarding the statement of Allaah: [ وَٱسۡتَفۡتَحُواْ – But they (the Messengers) sought victory and help [from their Lord (Allah)]; [وَخَابَ ڪُلُّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ۬ -And every Jabbaar (obstinate, arrogant tyrant)]. [Every جَبَّارٍ – Jabbaar- one who murders and punishes solely due to anger, or compels the people to what he wants (by way of injustice), or overcomes the people (by way of injustice), or one afflicted with self-exaltedness]; [ عَنِيدٍ۬- Aneed – one who does not accept truth] was brought to a complete loss and destruction. To be continued…InShaaAllaah.

The Religion of Islam is a Perfect Solution for all Problems – By Imaam As-Sadi: [Part 4 – The Main Problem Associated With Religion]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

“We must mention some of the important problems of life, such as the problems (associated) with religion, knowledge, wealth and poverty, health and disease, war and peace, unity and disunity, love and hate, and other (affairs) about which people’s views and guidance differ, the righteous paths of the Islamic religion in dealing with these affairs and the benefits – which can neither be counted nor enumerated – it has contributed towards them. This problem (associated with religion and creed) is the most important and the greatest of life’s problems, and all affairs depend on the soundness, corruption or the absence of (religion and creed). Indeed, humankind have divided and taken various paths in religion and beliefs, and all these paths are perverted, crooked, harmful and not beneficial except for those guided to the true religion of Islam, because such a person will attain uprightness, good and peace of mind in all ways. And amongst the people are those who have been manipulated by shaytaan, so they worshipped (or worship) other things besides Allaah, such as trees, stones, images, prophets, angels, the righteous and the unrighteous, while acknowledging that Allaah is their Lord, Owner and Creator, alone without partner. These are the polytheists of different methodologies and groups. They acknowledged (or acknowledge) the Oneness of Allaah’s Lordship, but deviated (deviate) from singling Allaah out in worship. Indeed, the [uncorrupted divine books of the past and the final and seal of them (i.e. the Qur’aan)] show the wretchedness of these people and the path that leads them to destruction. All the Messengers agreed regarding the command to (establish) pure monotheism and forbade polytheism, and that the person who associates partners with Allaah in worship will be prevented from entry in paradise forever (if he does not repent before death) and his abode is the fire. Sound minds and sound innate natural disposition (affirms and acknowledges) the corruption of polytheism, deification of other things besides Allaah, devotion to created things and objects made by people (as objects of worship)”.

Commentary: The author began with the most important and greatest affair, and that is religion and creed. He clarified how the one who wants to search for a creed – through which his heart will attain tranquility – other than Islam will not find except confusion, loss and misguidance. The rectification or corruption of all affairs is dependent on religion and creed because it is the foundation of deeds, acts of obedience that are devoted to Allaah and acts of worship. When the foundation is corrupt, then what is built upon it will be corrupt; therefore, the affair that must be given the most importance is rectification of the foundation so that the building will be established on a robust foundation and not on a an undetermined brink of a precipice ready to crumble down (see footnote a); but rather a person should work to strengthen the foundation and make it firmly established. The author mentioned the solutions which the people bring (or adopt) in this subject matter and that it has not led to anything, except loss and misguidance, besides the one blessed with the religion of Islam.

The first loss in this subject matter of creed and religion is that affair through which shaytaan manipulates (befools, or plays about with) the minds of the people, lead them to worship other than Allaah and attachment to (false objects of worship), such as stones, trees, shrines and the like, seeking for their needs through these things, turning towards them for the things they desire to attain, vowing to them, seeking closeness to them through acts of worship and other deeds that can only be devoted to Allaah. And amazing was the (false) perseverance and steadfastness of the people who committed these polytheistic acts when they came across the true path to guidance that was based on beneficial clear proofs. Allaah said:

[وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِنۡہُمۡ أَنِ ٱمۡشُواْ وَٱصۡبِرُواْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىۡءٌ۬ يُرَادُ – And the leaders among them went about (saying): “Go on, and remain constant to your aliha (gods)! Verily, This (i.e. call to pure monotheism) is a thing designed (against you)!] [Surah Saad. Verse 6]

And Allaah stated that they stated boastfully: [إِن ڪَادَ لَيُضِلُّنَا عَنۡ ءَالِهَتِنَا لَوۡلَآ أَن صَبَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهَا‌ۚ – He (Muhammad) would have nearly misled us from our aliha (gods), had it not been that we were patient and constant in their worship!] [Surah Al-Furqan. Verse 42]

So, this was how far they went in their misguidance! The beneficial proofs and evidences came to them, the noblest person amongst humankind came to them and they heard his speech that was accompanied with (sound) proofs and clarifications, but they persisted upon polytheism and advised one another to persist upon it. So, they worshipped others besides Allaah, such as trees, stones, pictures, prophets, angels, the righteous people and the impious people. The majority of humankind are upon this path. Allaah said: [وَمَآ أَڪۡثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوۡ حَرَصۡتَ بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ – And most of mankind will not believe (in pure Islamic monotheism) even if you desire it eagerly] – [Surah Yusuf. Verse 103] – even though they acknowledged that Allaah is their Lord, Owner and only Creator. When asked, “Who created you?” “Who is your Lord?” “Who controls your affairs?” “Who alone controls life and death?” They will say, “Allaah”. But despite this, they worshipped others besides Allaah and invoked those who are slaves of Allaah like themselves. Allaah said: [إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ عِبَادٌ أَمۡثَالُڪُمۡ‌ۖ – Verily, those whom you invoke besides Allah are slaves (of Allaah) like you]. [Surah Al-A’raaf. Verse 194]

So, the author said that despite their acknowledgement that Allaah is their Lord, Owner and sole Creator without any partner in this affair, they deviated from worshipping Allaah alone. These are the polytheists of the different methodologies and paths. Polytheism is of different paths: some people worship idols, some worship the sun and the moon, and some worship trees and stones. The people upon this path have different objects of worship.

The Messengers were agreed upon the command to single out Allaah in worship and they forbade polytheism. Allaah said: [وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ‌ۖ – And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (saying): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities)”. [Surah An-Nahl. Verse 36]

Allaah said: [ وَسۡـَٔلۡ مَنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَآ أَجَعَلۡنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ءَالِهَةً۬ يُعۡبَدُونَ – And ask (O Muhammad ) those of Our Messengers whom We sent before you: “Did We ever appoint aliha (gods) to be worshipped besides the Most Beneficent (Allah)?][Surah Az-Zukhruf. Verse 45]

All the Messengers agreed upon nullifying Shirk and affirmed pure monotheism, and that the one who ascribes partners with Allaah in worship will be forbidden from entry in paradise forever (if he or she dies without repenting from such a sin).

And just as polytheism is considered corrupt in the divine revelation, likewise it is deemed corrupt by sound intellect and uncorrupted innate natural disposition. Polytheism is something in opposition to sound innate natural disposition, just as Allaah stated in the Hadeeth Qudsee: “I have created all of My servants with an innate natural disposition to worship Me (alone), but devils come to them and turn them away from their religion”. [Ṣaḥeeh Muslim. Number 2865](see ‘footnote b’ about Hadeeth Qudsee)

In another hadeeth, the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Every child is born upon an innate natural disposition (i.e. Islam), but his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or Magian”. [Ṣaḥeeh al-Bukhari. Number 1292 and Saheeh Muslim. Number 2658]

It is well known – both in the past and at present- that many people have adopted polytheism (i.e. worshipping others besides Allaah) as a means of solving problems through polytheistic deeds (i.e. invoking graves, shrines, tombs, prophets, angels, stones, jinns, trees, animals etc). (1)

The Religion of Islam is a Perfect Solution for all Problems – By Imaam As-Sadi [Part 2]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: “What we have stated (regarding the fact that Islam solves all problems etc) is proven – regarding its truth and correctness – by what has been experienced and clearly perceived through the five senses, just as the (uncorrupted) divine laws, (uncorrupted) natural dispositions and sound minds indicate its reality. That is because the entire religion (of Islam) is righteousness and a means of upright rectification- all of it repels evil and harm, calls to goodness and guidance, and warns against evil and all kinds destructive things”.

Commentary: The state of affairs bears witness to this, and the meaning of this is that many of the problems which people seek to solve based on other than the Qur’aan and the Sunnah have not been solved in a sound manner; but they found a cure (or remedy) after returning to the Qur’aan and Sunnah. This is known in relation to both widespread problems and problems that affect individuals. Many times a person is faced with a problem and he searches – due to lack of understanding – for something to solve it, but through the divine revelation; then he finds that the affair has not increased except in more problems and his calamity has not increase except in more evil, so he reflects and finds that what will stop his problem is found in Islam. For example, the person who faces financial problems may not perceive that his problem did not occur except due to engaging in some forbidden dealings- enters into usury and the likes, and after a period of time it becomes clear to him that his problem only increase in severity, even though the divine guidance puts a stop to problems associated with poverty, riches and illness. Many times people enter into forbidden things when seeking to solve the problem of illness and the affair only increases in severity, and the problem brings other problems. Details will follow from a very beneficial Prophetic narration as to how Islam solves the problem of poverty and illness, and what Islam’s guidance is regarding these problems. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

[ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ يَہۡدِى لِلَّتِى هِىَ أَقۡوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرً۬ا كَبِيرً۬ا – Verily, this Qur’an guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allah and His Messenger, Muhammad , etc.). who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise)]. [Surah Al-Israa. Verse 9]

And Allaah describes the Qur’aan that is an explanation of everything (see footnote a), but despite this many of Muslims do not return to it due to many reasons and the greatest of them being the existence of much ignorance, little understanding and gatherings of knowledge, and their weak understanding in the religion ordained by Allaah. (1)

Footnote a: “And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims)”. [Surah An-Nahl. Verse 89]

Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 14

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Just as Allāh notified us about the resurrection by way of the first creation, and the creation of the heavens and the earth, which is greater than the creation of humankind, and the revival of the earth after its death; and proved the truthfulness of the Messenger and the Qur’aan by challenging humankind and Jinn to bring something similar, or ten chapters like thereof or one chapter, He also established the proofs against the creation through the perfection of what the Messenger brought of truthful news and equitable rulings, and the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. If you are in doubt, then examine (truthfully) every report Allāh conveyed in His Book or reported by His Messenger Muhammad, and you will find that it is upon the highest degree of truthfulness and most beneficial for the people, because indeed accepting and believing in the one who reported it is the greatest nourisher of faith. Reflect a second time! Is there anything in Allāh’s statements and the statements of His Messenger that shows other than what sound perception, true reality and sound intellect shows, or do you find that these matters are the greatest testimonies for the statements of Allāh and His Messenger? Reflect a third time! Do you find anything in Allāh’s rulings and His Messenger’s rulings, the commands and prohibitions, that which negates true wellbeing for the servants or do you find that it is the purpose behind the perfection of their affairs, an elevation of their status, adorns them with beautiful manners and free them from evil manners? It is that which raises its people to the highest levels of perfection, and deficiency and harm do not occur except due being devoid of it or some of it. And indeed one of the allies of the atheists acknowledged this and then unleashed doubts to those who are ignorant of Islaam true reality when he did so in some of its subsidiary branches, but his lies and slander were manifested, well-being was manifested for people and as well as many benefits from the statement which the Islamic legislation demonstrated, because it is the divine law of the Best of Judges, the knower of the unseen and the seen, Who knows (perfectly) the means of wellbeing for the servants that which they do not know, and legislated for them that which is a means of perfect well-being in every era and place, in their religious and worldly, and He is The All-Wise, The All-Knower and The Most Bestower of Special Mercy to The Believers.

Sound intellect affirms Allāh’s Oneness, the fact that Allaah alone is the Creaator, The Provider and The One in Control of alla affairs of the Creation; (affirms) the truthfulness of Allāh’s Messenger and the soundness of what he brought. Whoever claims that anything of the intellectual evidences which the people of sound intellect have submitted to contradicts what Muhammad brought, he is one who is deceived and let him produce a single example because he will not be able to do so. Yes, he may bring theories and fantasies, but when sound intellect is established you will find ignorance and clear misguidance similar to the statement of many of the atheists, who say: “The punishments and prescribed Islamic injunctions, which the religion of Islam brought to deal with crimes, are neither appropriate nor suitable as laws.” So, the best in their view is to replace them with imprisonment and fines. This is tantamount to false conclusion and arrogance in dealing with true reality, for indeed the laws enacted by the atheists to deal with crimes – as well as those who blindly follow them – do not benefit in anything, and its great deficiencies have manifested and its setbacks are great.

Indeed, it has no effect in deterring criminals and the only single way to deter every criminal is through application of the Islamic legislated injunctions and the prescribed religious punishments. It is what will guarantee deterrence against the criminals, as they are penalties, exemplary punishments and admonitions, which if applied in a region amongst the regions, the matters will be rectified, perpetrators and criminals will be fewer and there will be safety against crimes related to murder, wealth and honour, because it is a legislation from One Who is All-Wise in dealing with the circumstances of the servants and that which will rectify their affairs, and protect them from evil. (1)

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said:

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Indeed, Allah conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses (the Qur’an), and purifying them (from sins by their following him), and instructing them (in) the Book (the Qur’an) and Al-Hikmah [the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet (i.e. his legal ways, statements, acts of worship, etc.)], while before that they had been in manifest error.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And remember Allah’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus, Allah makes His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.

Allaah [The Most High] said: [ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمَ دِينً۬ا‌ۚ – This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion].

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حُكۡمً۬ا لِّقَوۡمٍ۬ يُوقِنُونَ – And who is better in judgement than Allah for a people who have firm Faith].

Whoever utilises sound intellect to examine what the Messengers brought [i.e. the revelation] – what they commanded and guided the people to, such as knowledge and Awareness of Allaah, the worship of Allaah alone, turning to Allaah in repentance and obedience with true Faith (Islamic Monotheism) and the command to fulfil all the rights [of the people] based on courteous good will, perfecting one’s actions [i.e. based on sincerity to Allaah alone] and treating others with kindness [by sincerely seeking to benefit them though one’s knowledge, wealth or position], and that which they [i.e. Messengers] forbade; then thereafter he examines what those who have deviated from the path of Allaah call to, he will know that good [and its outcomes], success, sound rectification of the hearts and deeds, [sound rectification of] the worldly affairs and [sound rectification of the religious affairs and their end results in the afterlife] are all in agreement with what the Messengers called to. And he will know that the call of those who deviate from the path of Allaah is designed to do away with good manners, whose end result is nothing but complete chaos and a state in which one goes along with lust until the animals become more noble and beneficial than humans. This is no doubt their state of affairs – clearly manifested by what they are upon and what they proclaim with their tongues. Among the most amazing of affairs is that many contemporary writers and politicians seek to remedy the many social ills and try to do so do from many angles, however as for the problem of deviation from Allaah’s Path – whose surge has carried away the majority of young people – they have not rushed to stop it by returning to sound Eemaan and certainty; rather those who have deviated from Allaah’s Path have been abandoned to wander blindly in their misguidance and wavering in beguilement, and thus the social ills they seek to remedy gives birth to other social ills- because if the path to remedying social ills is not based on Eemaan and sound religion, they will increase and become worse. (2)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Everyone with a bit of (sound) intellect knows that the corruption of the world and its ruin occurs due to giving precedence to opinion over the divine revelation and (evil) desires over sound intellect. These two corrupt motives are not entrenched in a heart except that its destruction becomes inevitable nor in a nation except that its affairs are completely corrupted. (3)

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: And even though there is something in the paths of analogical reasoning and reflection that will lead to knowledge, however sometimes it cannot give detail explanation in a dispute between the people of the earth due to the minute details and ambiguities [in that dispute], and at other times due to the fact the people differ when prioritising necessities. Therefore, due to this Allaah [The Most High] commanded [us] to return to the revelation in times of dispute. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً۬ وَٲحِدَةً۬ فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَأَنزَلَ مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِيَحۡكُمَ بَيۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فِيمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُواْ فِيهِ‌ۚ -Mankind were one community (i.e. upon Tawheed and Allaah’s Sharee’ah) and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed]. [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 213] Therefore, Allaah [The Most High] designated the revealed Books [i.e. the Qur’aan being the final of them] as the judge between the people in matters wherein they differ. (4)

Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [may Allaah preserve him] said: If you say that the intellect is to be given precedence over the revelation, then which intellect should we follow? Are the intellects of the people combined in the intellect of one man or do they differ? There are intellects of the philosophers, the atheists, the heretics, the people of evil desires and those who confound truth with falsehood; and due to this one of the Salaf said, “Had the desires been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”; therefore, we say, “Had the intellects been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth. (5)

Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allaah preserve him] said: The wisdom of the Islamic Shariah: Cut off evils and harms to society from their very roots and enjoy the resulting freedom, ease and wholesome life. In contrast: the barbarity and backwardness of commercialising corrosive evils– usurious banking, alcohol, gambling–in order to profit from the masses through affairs in which their ruin and impoverishment lies–and then managing this commercialisation through legislation, policies, guidelines and so on to “limit the harms”. The result? Inescapable enslavement, bondage, disease and ruin of the masses for the enrichment of the few who peddle these vices. Where is the intellect?! (6)

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [may allaah preserve him] said: The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: Verily, the creation of each of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days as a drop [of water, semen], then he is a clot for a similar period, then a morsel for a similar period…. Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 13

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

The Qur’an is an elucidation of everything, a guidance and mercy for a people who believe. Indeed, when affairs are explained, its wellbeing is accomplished, and every affair that is not explained will be corrupted and deficient. The real state of affairs is a testimony to this. Sound (uncorrupted) intellect agrees with the (unadulterated) divine legislation and bears witness to it; and that whoever opposes the divine legislation has indeed opposed it with an unsound intellect; rather the person has opposed it with ignorance and misguidance, just as Allāh [The Most High] stated about all those whom He has judged to be dwellers of the eternal fire- who wilfully turn away from the divine legislation – that they will say:

[لو كنا نسمع أو نعقل ما كنا في أصحاب السعير – Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!” Then they will confess their sin. So, away with the dwellers of the blazing Fire]. [Surah Al-Mulk. Verses 10-11]

Allāh informed us that they were deprived of the (sound) hearing and intellect. How can one possess (sound) intellect when he associates one of the created things – deficient in every way – as partner with Allāh, The Creator, The One Who Controls and Regulates all affairs of the Universe and The One Singled Out with every Attribute of Perfection?! Rather, what is the intelligence of the person whom the Creator provided with sufficient proofs, which even if a person were to harbour doubt in everything that is perceivable and can be understood by the intellect, he would not have been able to allow his intellect to harbour doubt about Allāh? And this why the Messengers said to their nations:

[أفي الله شك فاطر السماوات والأرض – What! Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth?] [Surah Ibraaheem. Verse 10]

This is affirmed by everyone with a residue of intelligence that to harbour doubt about Allāh is tantamount to foppery, madness and arrogance, and there is no pride greater than it.

And regarding the statement of some of them, “If the intellect and the divine revelation go against each other, we give precedence to the intellect”. (See Footnote a) Indeed, based on what the intelligence of people with real intellect has manifested, this above statement is tantamount to great ignorance because (sound) intellect agrees with divine revelation and bears witness to it. Would a person with (sound) intellect think that the All-Wise One Who gives perfect commands and prohibitions (free from all faults, deficiencies, shortcomings, weaknesses) would give rulings that contradict sound intellect, let alone informs us of things that contradict the real state of affairs?! This is a mighty slander, and therefore Allāh notified the (sound) intellects and (uncorrupted) natural dispositions about the mighty obligations, Islamic Monotheism, Prophethood and the Hereafter. Allāh said:

Say: (O Muhammad to those polytheists, pagans, etc.) “Call upon those whom you assert (to be associate gods) besides Allah, they possess not even the weight of an atom (or a small ant), either in the heavens or on the earth, nor have they any share in either, nor there is for Him any supporter from among them. Intercession with Him profits not, except for him whom He permits. [Surah Saba 22-23]

Allāh notified the sound intellects about a matter they know and do not deny, which is that everything that is worshipped besides Him neither possess dominion nor a share of dominion, neither power to support nor intercede. Therefore, when all these four affairs are cut off, the falsity of worshipping others besides Allāh is established. Likewise, Allāh [The Most High] said:

ومن أضل ممن يدعو من دون الله من لا يستجيب له إلى يوم القيامة وهم عن دعائهم غافلون وإذا حشر الناس كانوا لهم أعداء وكانوا بعبادتهم كافرين

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind is gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping. [Surah Al-Ahqaaf 5-6]

Likewise, Allāh [The Most High] said:

ما اتخذ الله من ولد وما كان معه من إله إذا لذهب كل إله بما خلق ولعلا بعضهم على بعض سبحان الله عما يصفون

No son (or offspring or children) did Allah beget, nor is there any ilah (god) along with Him; (if there had been many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have tried to overcome others! Glorified be Allah above all that they attribute to Him! [Surah Al-Muminoon. Aayah 91]

And likewise Allāh notified us that He alone is the One Who created and that there is no Lord besides Him, the One without partner, co-equal, associates and resemblance, and He is free from all imperfections, shortcomings, weaknesses. Allāh said:

Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief. [Surah At-Toor. Aayaat 34-35] [An Excerpt from Ad-Dalaa’il Al-Qur’aaniyyah Fee Annal Uloom Wal-A’maal An-Naafi’ah Al-Asriyyah Daakhilatun Fid Deen Al-Islaamiy. page 26-27. Slightly paraphrased]

Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 12

General Affairs of Wellbeing Related to Religious and Worldly Affairs

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Allaah stated regarding all affairs of wellbeing related to the religious and worldly affairs:

يا أيها الذين آمنوا إذا نودي للصلاة من يوم الجمعة فاسعوا إلى ذكر
الله وذروا البيع ذلكم خير لكم إن كنتم تعلمون فإذا قضيت الصلاة فانتشروا في الأرض وابتغوا من فضل الله واذكروا الله كثيرا لعلكم تفلحون

O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat (prayer) on the day of Friday (Jumu’ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu’ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salat (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know! Then when the (Jumu’ah) Salat (prayer) is finished, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah (by working, etc.), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful. [Surah Al-Jumu’ah. Aayaat 9-10]

Allaah said:

O you who believe! When you contract a debt for a fixed period, write it down. Let a scribe write it down in justice between you. Let not the scribe refuse to write as Allah has taught him, so let him write. Let him (the debtor) who incurs the liability dictate, and he must fear Allah, his Lord, and diminish not anything of what he owes. But if the debtor is of poor understanding, or weak, or is unable himself to dictate, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And get two witnesses out of your own men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women, such as you agree for witnesses, so that if one of them (two women) errs, the other can remind her. And the witnesses should not refuse when they are called on (for evidence). You should not become weary to write it (your contract), whether it be small or big, for its fixed term, that is more just with Allah; more solid as evidence, and more convenient to prevent doubts among yourselves, save when it is a present trade which you carry out on the spot among yourselves, then there is no sin on you if you do not write it down. But take witnesses whenever you make a commercial contract. Let neither scribe nor witness suffer any harm, but if you do (such harm), it would be wickedness in you. So be afraid of Allah; and Allah teaches you. And Allah is the All-Knower of each and everything. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 282]

Allāh [The Most High] said: [الله الذي يرسل الرياح فتثير سحابا – Allah is He Who sends the winds, so they raise clouds.] [Surah Ar-Rum. Aayah 48]

Allāh said: [سبحان الذي خلق الأزواج كلها مما تنبت الأرض ومن أنفسهم ومما لا يعلمون – Glory be to Him, Who has created all the pairs of that which the earth produces, as well as of their own (human) kind (male and female), and of that which they know not]. [Surah Yasin. Aayah 36]

Allāh said: [وأرسلنا الرياح لواقح فأنزلنا من السماء ماء فأسقيناكموه وما أنتم له بخازنين – And We send the winds fertilizing (to fill heavily the clouds with water), then caused the water (rain) to descend from the sky, and We gave it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its stores [i.e. to give water to whom you like or to withhold it from whom you like]. [Surah Al-Hijr. Aayah 22]

Allāh said: [هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الأرض جميعا – He it is Who created for you all that is on earth]. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 29]

Allāh said: [ألم تروا أن الله سخر لكم ما في السماوات وما في الأرض وأسبغ عليكم نعمه ظاهرة وباطنة – See you not (O men) that Allah has subjected for you whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and has completed and perfected His Graces upon you, (both) apparent (i.e Islamic Monotheism, and the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.) and hidden [i.e. One’s Faith in Allah (of Islamic Monotheism) knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc.]? [Surah Luqman. Aayah 20]

Allāh said: [الله الذي سخر لكم البحر لتجري الفلك فيه بأمره – Allah it is He Who has subjected to you the sea, that ships may sail through it by His Command]. [Surah Al-Jaathiyah. Aayah 12]

Allāh said: [والخيل والبغال والحمير لتركبوها وزينة ويخلق ما لا تعلمون – And (He has created) horses, mules and donkeys, for you to ride and as an adornment. And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge]. [Surah An-Nahl 8]

If a person contemplates on these noble verses and others that are similar to them, knows what they necessitate and what they include of the Islamic sciences, the worldly sciences and their duties (or functions), knows the (authentic) Prophetic path and the manner in which it explains the Qur’aan, and contemplates on the guidance of the Prophet in all affairs of his life, he will know that Islam does not isolate any affair of wellbeing, benefit, goodness and good (lawful) customary practice. Footnote a: The ruling regarding customs:

Imaam Ash-Shaatibee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated in Al-Muwaafaqaat that customs are many different types- some are good and others are corrupt. The good customs are those that neither oppose the Sharee’ah texts nor lead to losing an affair deem to be beneficial by the Sharee’ah, nor lead to an affair which the Sharee’ah deems to be corrupt. As for the corrupt customs, they are those that oppose the evidences in the Sharee’ah or some of the principles of the Sharee’ah, such as some of the customary dealings in usury and those deeds deemed to be evil by the Sharee’ah which the people engage in during occasions of happiness (or rejoicing etc) (2)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Hardship is only encountered by the one who abandons the Ma’loofaat and Awaa’id [i.e. those habitual things, deeds, practices, customs etc] for other than the sake of Allaah. As for the one who abandons them truthfully and sincerely from the bottom of his heart- for the sake of Allaah alone- then indeed he does not encounter any difficulty due to abandoning them except in the beginning, in order that he is tested as to whether he is truthful or untruthful in abandoning them? If he exercises a little bit of patience, its [i.e. that abandonment] will alternate into pleasure. Ibn Seereen said that he heard Shurayh swearing by Allaah that “A servant does not abandon anything for the sake of Allaah and finds a loss in that.” And their statement [i.e. the people of knowledge] that ‘whoever abandons something for the Sake of Allaah, Allaah will replace it with what is better.” This is true. This compensation is of different types and the best of that which a person is compensated with is: the desire and yearning to get close to Allaah, seeking after Allaah’s pleasure, love of Allaah, and the heart granted-by way of it- tranquility, strength, enthusiasm, happiness and being pleased with its Lord [The Most High]. (3)

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: It is obligated on every Muslim that he does not depend on custom; rather he presents it to the pure Islamic legislation [to be judged], so whatever the Islamic legislation affirms is permissible and whatever it does not affirm is impermissible. The customs of the people are not proof to determine the lawfulness of anything. All the customs of the people in their countries or tribes must be presented to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] for judgement, so whatever Allaah and His Messenger made permissible is permissible, and whatever they forbid, then it is obligatory to abandon it even if it is the custom of the people. (4)

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: The customs cannot make something that is not legislated (in the divine revelation) as something legislated, because of Allaah’s statement: [وَلَيۡسَ ٱلۡبِرُّ بِأَن تَأۡتُواْ ٱلۡبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا – It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc.) that you enter the houses from the back] [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 189], despite the fact that it was something they took as their custom and considered it to be an act of righteousness. Whoever takes something as a custom and believes that it is an act of righteousness, then it should be presented to Allaah’s divine legislation. (5)

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] also said: Extremism in related to customs is stringent adherence to old customs and not diverting to what is better than them. As for if the customs are equal in benefit [i.e. the ones judged to be permissible by the divine legislation], then a person remaining upon what he is upon would be better than going along with the new (or emerging) customs. Qur’anic Proofs Which Show that the Religion of Islam Embodies the Beneficial Contemporary Sciences and Professions – Part 2

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Everything Allāh Says Is Truth

Allāh said: [وَٱللَّهُ يَقُولُ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَهُوَ يَهۡدِى ٱلسَّبِيلَ – Allah says the truth, and He guides to the (Right) Way]. [Surah Al-Ahzaab. Aayah 4]

This noble verse makes it explicitly clear that indeed Allah [The Exalted] says the truth, and that is truthfulness and certainty in His reports, perfect justice and wisdom in His commands and prohibitions. Everything He has stated is absolute truth and a fact that conforms to true reality, and beneficial for the servants as a means of rectifying their creed, manners, religion and worldly affairs. Everything He has commanded is righteousness, goodness, benevolence, a perfect benefit and a blessing. And everything He has forbidden is evil, harm and corruption, and this applies to both religious and worldly affairs. The entire Islamic legislation is a detail explanation and clarification of this mighty fundamental principle stated by Allah in this verse and other than it. Then Allāh said: [وَهُوَ يَهۡدِى ٱلسَّبِيلَ – And He [Allāh] guides to the (Right) Way]- the path that leads to the truth which He [Allah] mentioned and through which He judges. So, Allah took it upon himself that He must explain and clarify this wholesome truth through manifest intellectual and textual proofs, as He said in another verse:

سَنُرِيهِمۡ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فِى ٱلۡأَفَاقِ وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِہِمۡ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ‌ۗ

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’an) is the truth. [Surah Fussilat. Aayah 53]

Signs and Proofs in The Universe That Shows Us the Oneness of Allāh

Indeed, when He [The Exalted] informed us about His Oneness and that He alone is the One singled out in Perfection in every way; then commanded us to worship Him alone without partners and that the religion should be established sincerely for Him alone, and stated that His speech is truth, His promise and threat are true, and that His Messenger and His book is truth; He then stated that He must show them signs in themselves and in the universe of that which will make it clear that He is The Truth, and that everything else worshiped besides Him is false. The signs in the universe and the signs within themselves all confirm these mighty fundamentals through which it is known that Allah is The Truth, and that His Speech, His Book [i.e. the Qur’aan] and the Religion He has ordained are truth.  As for the signs in the universal this is found in His statement:

إِنَّ فِى خَلۡقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَٱلنَّہَارِ لَأَيَـٰتٍ۬ لِّأُوْلِى ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ

“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding”. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 190]

And in His [The Most High] statement:

“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.) for people of understanding.” [Surah Al-Baqarah Aayah 164]

There are many verses in which Allāh informs us about the affairs of the universe and that they are signs and proofs which shows The Oneness of Allāh, His truthfulness and the truthfulness of His Messengers. Therefore, the One Who brought these mighty creations into existence with these amazing characteristics, based on this amazing system and thoroughly completed creation, with perfection and beauty, is The One singled out in Lordship and the Only Deity worthy of worship – the One with vast, All-Encompassing Mercy and Wisdom, and He is The One Who encompasses all things in His Knowledge. So, The One Whose affair is as such has the right to be worshiped alone without partners, thanked and remembered due to His All-Encompassing Perfect Benevolence and the blessings He has bestowed (on the creation).

The mighty creations found in the universe shows the Perfection of His Ability and The Greatness of His Authority. The amazing beautiful organisation within it and creation that is thoroughly completed in all ways shows His unique, All-Encompassing Perfect Wisdom and that He alone is worthy of all Praise. And that which is found in it of various things of a specific nature shows the enforcement of His All-Encompassing Perfect Will and Intent. And that which is found in it of benefits and welfare for the servants, which can neither be enumerated nor can its varieties be counted let alone its various types as well as those of a distinct characteristic, are all a proof of His vast Mercy, His vast Grace, kindness, Generosity and Benevolence. All of this is proof to show that it is obligatory to worship Him alone and perform deeds sincerely for His Sake, and that He Who brought these mighty creations into existence is able to revive the dead and He is able to do all things.

The Signs Within Ourselves

As for the signs within themselves, Allāh said: [وفي أنفسكم أفلا تبصرون – And also in your ownselves. Will you not then see?] [Adh-Dhaariyaat. Aayah 21]

[أولم ير الإنسان أنا خلقناه من نطفة فإذا هو خصيم مبين – Does not man see that We have created him from Nutfah (mixed male and female discharge semen drops). Yet behold! He (stands forth) as an open opponent]. [Surah Yaa Seen. Aayah 77]

So let man see from what he is created! He is created from a water gushing forth]. [Surah At-taariq. Aayaat 5-6]

And that which is similar to these verses in which Allāh notifies the human being to contemplate and look at the beginning of his creation; the stages of his development and the way he alternated from one state to another from a drop of water until he became a complete human in his body and mind; and the way Allāh perfected his creation and put him in this amazing order with every limb he needs for everything that is of benefit to him and every limb in its suitable place, which would not have been suitable except in its rightful place. How to Approach The Contemporary Worldly Sciences

[An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth. Hadeeth 4]

It is well known that during that era, the Sahaabah did not know these stages (of development of the human being in the womb) through experimental knowledge, vision [i.e. by way X-rays or ultrasound that enables the human to see something in the womb) or other than that; rather it was simply (a statement of the Prophet) which they (believed and affirmed). They were scholars by way of the revelation sent down to the Prophet and not by way of experimentation (examination). [Sharh Al-Arba’een. Hadeeth 4]

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: We do not say, “We do not give consideration to anything stated by the people in the subject matter regarding medicine, astronomy and the celestial bodies”, however, we do not accept everything they say. If what they say opposes the Book and the (authentic) Sunnah, then indeed we do not accept their statements. We take [i.e. believe and affirm without any doubt] that which is conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah], and we say, “An era will come in which the people will bear witness to the falsity of those statements of theirs – at present – that are in opposition to the Book and Sunnah and (bear witness) to the soundness of that which has been conveyed in the Book and the Sunnah. [An excerpt from the ‘Explanation of Bulooghul Maraam’ Vol 1. page 130. Shared by Ustaadh abu Tasneem (Mushaf Al-Banghaalee- may Allaah preserve him)]

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Indeed, that which is stated by the astronomers about the celestial bodies, their sizes and the distance between them, and that which is said about the earth [i.e. by the geologists etc] is categorized into three affairs: [a] That which is backed by the sound knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the Sharee’ah], therefore it is accepted. [b] That which the knowledge-based proofs [i.e. the sharee’ah] declares to be false, therefore it is rejected. [c] That which there is no proof to either accept or reject it, therefore it is unproven until a person from the people of knowledge [i.e. upright scholars of Ahlus Sunnah] examines it [i.e. examines what it indicates based on the Book and Sunnah] to show whether it should be accepted or rejected. As for accepting it without [sound] investigation and observation, but merely accepting it by blindly following them [i.e. the astronomers, geologists etc], then this is impermissible because of the numerous mistakes that occur as a result of that, and speaking -without knowledge – about Allaah and that which He has created [i.e. the entire universe and all that is within it]. [An Excerpts from ‘Al-Adillah An-Naqliyyah Wal-Hissiyyah Alaa Imkaanis Su’ood Ilal Kawaakib Wa Alaa Jarayaan Ash-Shams Wal-Qamar Wa Sukoon Al-Ard’ page 74. slightly paraphrased]

Therefore, we return to those honest investigators – those students of sound Aqeedah who are well acquainted with both the statements of the upright scholars and the contemporary worldly sciences, such as the likes of Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaadh Amjad Rafiq [may Allaah preserve him, increase him in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. And likewise preserve all the students and Ahlus Sunnah Aameen]. Surah Al-Asr: [Reminders From Imaam Ibnul Qayyim and a Reminder From Imaam Al-Albaanee]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ
إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ

By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily! The human is in loss; except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, enjoin one another to the truth and enjoin one another to patience.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “If all the people pondered upon this Surah, it would have sufficed them”. The clarification of this affair is that the fulfillment of four affairs – (mentioned) in this Surah- will lead a person to attain the highest level of human perfection. The first affair is acquaintance with truth, the second is to act upon truth, the third is to teach truth to the one who does not know and the fourth affair is to exercise patience whilst learning the truth, acting upon it and teaching. Allaah mentioned these four levels in this Surah and made an oath by Time – that everyone is in a state of loss except those who believe and perform righteous deeds, and they are those who act upon the truth they know, enjoin one another to the truth whilst exercising patience in the path and being steadfast. This is pinnacle of human perfection, because indeed perfection necessitates that a person attains perfection himself and enables others to attain it. This is attained through rectification of the strength of one’s knowledge and action- rectification of the strength of one’s knowledge is attained by way of Eemaan and rectification of the strength of one’s actions is attained through righteous deeds; then enabling others to attain this perfection (i.e. by the will of Allaah) through teaching, exercising patience upon this path and enjoining one another to exercise patience in the path of knowledge and righteous action. This Surah, despite its shortness, is one of the most comprehensive Suras of the Qur’aan that gathers good in its entirety, and all praise and thanks is due to Allaah Who revealed and assured that His Book is sufficient besides everything else – a cure for every disease and a guide to every good. (1)

It is not enough that they know the truth and exercise patience, rather they have to command, guide and urge one another to act upon it. And when it is the fact that others besides these people are losers, it is well known that disobedience and sins blinds the sound discernment (or perception, foresight) of the hearts, so they do not understand the truth as it should be and their strength of determination is weakened due to not exercising patience; rather indeed the heart is exposed to haphazard thoughts until its understanding goes the opposite way and likewise the person’s conduct, so he perceives falsehood as truth and truth as falsehood, good as evil and evil as good. His conduct goes the opposite way- turns away from his journey towards attaining the Pleasure of Allaah and the home of the afterlife (i.e paradise) and proceeds towards the residence of the futile souls that are pleased with the worldly life, satisfied with it, heedless of Allaah and His signs (revelation, lessons etc), and abandons preparing to meet Allaah (i.e. by way of upright believe and righteous deeds). (I) Had there not been any other punishment due to one’s sins other than this, it would have been (enough as a) demand that one abandons this path and distance from it. And Allaah’s Aid sought! (2)

Footnote (I): The Imaam also stated in Al-Fawaa’id pages 137-137: if a person prefers what is deficient and will eventually cease to exist, then that is either because the virtue of (the afterlife) is not manifested to him or due to a lack of desiring what is more virtuous. Both these two states are an indication of weakness in Eemaan, intellect and clear-sightedness, because indeed the one who desires the Dunyah- the one who gives it precedence and is eager for it, either he testifies that there is what is more virtuous and everlasting, or he does not testify. If he does not testify (i.e. that the Aakhirah is more virtuous and everlasting), he is completely devoid of Eemaan; however if he testifies (i.e. that the Aakhirah is more virtuous and everlasting) but does not give it precedence, then his intellect is corrupt and he has made an evil choice for himself. These two (testimonies) are inevitable and a servant cannot escape them, because giving precedence to the Dunyah over the Aakhirah is either due to corruption in Eemaan or due to corruption of one’s intellect, and in many cases both of them are combined together (in a person).

Indeed, Allaah placed humans in two categories – the loser and the gainer. The gainer is the one who sincerely exhorts himself with Eemaan and righteous deeds; sincerely exhorts the people by enjoining truth, which incudes teaching the truth and guiding to it; and enjoining patience, which also includes that he himself exercises patience. The Surah comprises of the two sincere exhortations, two characteristics of human perfection and the highest level of two types of strengths, expressed in the shortest, the most concise and clearest wording, the best preamble and the best precision in the suitable place (or subject matter).

As for the two sincere exhortations, they are the person’s sincere exhortation of himself and his brother in Islam by enjoining truth and exercising patience upon the path. As for the two characteristics of human perfection, they are the person’s self-perfection and enabling others to attain self-perfection (i.e. by help of Allaah). As for perfection of the two strengths, the soul has two strengths and they are: the strength of knowledge and sound observation, and these two affairs are perfected through Eemaan; the strength of sound intent, love (for everything praiseworthy, especially love for Allaah) and knowledge, and these affairs are perfected through righteous deeds (i.e. deeds carried out sincerely for the sake of Allaah and in conformity with the authentic Sunnah), and this cannot be accomplished except through patience.

Therefore, there are three affairs carried out by the person and then he enjoins them on others- perfection of the strength of knowledge through Eemaan, perfection of the strength of action through righteous deeds, being consistent upon that with patience and commanding others with it. And by way of these three affairs, he becomes a participant and one attributed to them, teaching and calling to them. This is the absolute gain, and in estimation of whatever he misses of this gain, he incurs some loss the like thereof. And Allaah’s Aid is sought and to Him we entrust all affairs! (3)

The majority of the Qur’aan commentators hold that Al-Asr (Time) is Ad-Dahr (the time period in this world) and this is the statement that is carries more weight based on the sound evidences.

Allaah made an oath by Al-Asr (Time) due to it being the period in which moral lessons and signs occur, for indeed the passing of night and day is under the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing (Allaah)- organized to serve the welfare of the universe (and its inhabitants) based on the most perfect order and organization; alternating with one another, sometimes not much difference between them and at other times one takes from the hours of the other; the difference between the light, the darkness, the heat and the cold; the different time periods divided into generations, years, months, days, hours and what is lesser than that! These are all signs (creations) of the Lord [The Exalted] and a Burhaan [i.e. proof that clarify and distinguish between truth and falsehood in everything] from the Baraaheen [proofs] regarding Allaah’s All-Encompassing Perfect Ability and Wisdom (free from all imperfections, faults, deficiencies, shortcomings).

Allaah made an oath by Time and that is the period within which human beings perform deeds for which one will either receive punishment or a good recompense. He gave a notification about Time, which is the Mab’da [i.e. the beginning within which humans perform deeds] and notified the performers of deeds about the Ma’aad [the Hereafter], and that just as He was not unable to initiate the beginning, likewise He is not unable to establish the Hereafter; and that His Wisdom, which necessitated the creation of Time, the performers of deeds and their deeds, and categorized them into good and bad deeds, (i.e. deeds chosen by the person after being given free will and shown guidance through the Messengers) establishes the fact that the people are not equal, and it cannot be that the good doer will not receive a good recompense and that the evil doer will not be recompensed for his evil, and it cannot be that there will not be two groups- the gainers and the losers; but rather the human being in essence is a loser, except the one whom Allaah shows mercy, guides, blesses him with Eemaan, the ability to perform righteous deeds himself and the ability to command others. The opposite of this person is the other one who is reduced to the lowest of the low, except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, then they shall have a reward without end (Paradise). (4)

[وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ – and do righteous good deeds, enjoin one another to the truth and enjoin one another to patience]. This leads to the station of upright leadership and strength in the religion, just as Allaah said:

[وَجَعَلۡنَا مِنۡہُمۡ أَٮِٕمَّةً۬ يَہۡدُونَ بِأَمۡرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُواْ‌ۖ وَڪَانُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ – And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)]. [Surah As-Sajdah. Verse 24] So, through patience and certainty upright leadership in religion is attained.

Patience is two types:

Patience when facing what has decreed, such as calamities. Patience when fulfilling the divine legislated acts of worship and has two aspects- commands and prohibitions. The fulfilment of commands is related to patience in intent and action (i.e. persevere whilst fulfilling commands) and the second is related patience in keeping away from what one intends and wants to do (i.e. persevere whilst keeping away from evil).

As for the first type of patience (i.e. patience when facing the calamities decreed by Allaah), it is shared by both a believer and a disbeliever, a righteous person and a wicked sinner, and one is not rewarded if it is not connected to Eemaan [i.e sound belief] and Ikhtiyaar [i.e. the person willingly chooses to exercise patience as an act of worship devoted to Allaah]. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said about his daughter (whose son was on his death bed), “She should be patient and hope for Allah’s reward.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree. Number 1284]

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُم مَّغۡفِرَةٌ۬ وَأَجۡرٌ۬ ڪَبِيرٌ۬ – Except those who show patience and do righteous good deeds, those: theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise)]. [Surah Hud. Verse 11]

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [بَلَىٰٓ‌ۚ إِن تَصۡبِرُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ – Yes, if you hold on to patience and piety]. [Surah Aal Imran. Verse 125] [a] Allaah said: [وَإِن تَصۡبِرُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ – But if you remain patient and hold on piety]. [Surah Aal Imran. Verse 120] [b]

Patience without sound belief and piety is like a bodily strength that is devoid of sound belief and piety. So the level of one’s certainty in what has been divinely legislated determines the level of patience when facing calamities decreed by Allaah (i.e. a person will return to what Allaah has legislated in the divine revelation regarding how to deal with calamities). [c]

Abdullah: Allaah [The Exalted] said: [فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ۬‌ۖ وَلَا يَسۡتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ – So be patient (O Muhammad). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true, and let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message (which you are obliged to convey)]. [Surah Ar-Rum. Verse 60]

Allaah commanded the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] to exercise patience and not to be like those who do not have certainty due to lack of patience, because indeed their lack of certainty is due to their lack of patience, and they fear and frighten their people. Had they attained certainty and truth, they would have exercised patience – neither fear nor frighten others. So, the one whose certainty is little, his patience will be little, and the whose patience is little will fear and frighten others. The person who has certainty and patient is self-possessed because he has intelligence and common sense, and the one who neither has certainty nor patience is lightheaded, so desires and lust flings him here and there just as the wind does with something light. And Allaah’s Aid is sought! [d] (5)

Footnote a: The full verse: [بَلَىٰٓ‌ۚ إِن تَصۡبِرُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ وَيَأۡتُوكُم مِّن فَوۡرِهِمۡ هَـٰذَا يُمۡدِدۡكُمۡ رَبُّكُم بِخَمۡسَةِ ءَالَـٰفٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةِ مُسَوِّمِينَ -Yes, if you hold on to patience and piety, and the enemy comes rushing at you; your Lord will help you with five thousand angels having marks (of distinction). [Surah Aal Imran Verse 125]

Footnote b: The full verse:

If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but if some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain patient and become pious, not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allah surrounds all that they do. [Surah Aal Imran. Verse 120]

Footnote c: Sa’eed Bin Jubayr [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Patience is the person’s acknowledgment that what has afflicted him is from Allaah, seeking for reward from Allaah and hoping for Allaah’s good recompense. Indeed, a man maybe in a state of distress whilst he is being whipped, but you see nothing from him except patience”. [As-Sabr Wath-Thawaab Alayhi. By Ibn Abee Dunya page 113]

Regarding the statement “Patience is the person’s acknowledgement that what has afflicted him is from Allaah”, Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “It is as if this statement is an explanation of the statement “Innaa lil laah – to Allaah we belong”. So, the person acknowledges that he belongs to Allaah and his owner does whatever He wants with him.

Regarding the statement “Seeking for reward from Allaah”, Imaam Ibnul Qayyim said, “It is as if this statement is an explanation of the statement “Wa Innaa Ilayhi Raaji’oon – and to Him (i.e. Allaah) we shall return”, meaning we shall return to You, so that you reward us due to our patience and the reward for being patient during calamity will not be lost”.

Regarding the statement “Indeed, a man maybe in a state of distress whilst he is being whipped, but you do not see from him except patience”, Imaam Ibnul Qayyim said, “Patience is not that one bears the whip, rather it is to restrain the heart from getting angry with Allaah’s decree and to restrain the tongue from complaining about Allaah. Whoever is whipped and his heart is displeased with Allaah, then he is not one who is patient”. [Iddat As-Saabireen pages 183-184]

Footnote d: Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: A man asked Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] and said, “What would be better – that one is granted strength and the authority to establish the path of Allaah and His Messengers without any hindrance from those who belie or oppose Allaah and His Messengers, or face trials [at first]?’’ So, Ash- Shaafi’ee said to him, “One will not be given strength and the authority to follow the path of Allaah without any hindrance from those who belie or oppose Allaah and His Messengers until after facing trials; for indeed Allaah tried Nooh, Ibraaheem, Moosaa, Eesaa and Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them] and after they exercised patience, they were granted authority and strength to establish the path of Allaah without hindrance’’. Therefore, one should never think that he will escape pain. [Al-Fawaa’id’ pages 293-300]

He also said, “The person who has no certainty in faith [or lacks certainty] does not remain firm, rather he acts carelessly, whereas certainty is that firm Eemaan in the heart based on [sound] knowledge and action. And it maybe that a person has sound knowledge but does not exercise patience during calamities; rather he is swayed by emotion. Al-Hasan Al-Basri [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: If you wish to see someone with insight but has no patience, you will see him; and if you wish to see someone who has patience but not insight, you will see him; but if you see a person who had insight as well as patience, then he is the one mentioned by Allaah in the Aayah: [وَجَعَلۡنَا مِنۡہُمۡ أَٮِٕمَّةً۬ يَہۡدُونَ بِأَمۡرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُواْ‌ۖ وَڪَانُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ – And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)]. [Surah As-Sajdah’ Aayah 24] [Al-Fawaa’id’ pages 293-300]

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said regarding the statement of Allaah:

[فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ۬‌ۖ وَلَا يَسۡتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ – So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allaah is true. And let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message (which you are obliged to convey)]. [Surah Rum’ Aayah 60]

[فَٱصۡبِرۡ – So be patient]- Meaning, upon that which you have been commanded and in calling them to the [path of] Allaah; even if you see them turning away that should not turn you away from the call. [إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ۬‌ۖ – Indeed, the promise of Allaah is true]- Meaning, there is no doubt about that. And this is from that which aids a person to exercise patience, because when a servant know that his deeds will not be in vain and will find a full reward for it [in the afterlife], then what he faces of hardship will become minor, and it will become much easy for him to bear every difficulty.

[وَلَا يَسۡتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ – And let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you]- Meaning, their Imaan is weak and their certainty is little, so their forbearance becomes lacking as result of that and their patience is little. So, beware out of fear of being discouraged by these people, because unless you are not careful about their affair, they will discourage you and lead you to not being firm in holding fast to the commands and prohibitions, and the soul may assist them in this affair and seek to be similar and to be in agreement with them. [An Excerpt from Tafseer as-Sadi]

A Practice of The Companions – By Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him]

“When two men among the Prophet’s companions met, they would not depart from one another, except after one of them recited to the other:[إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ ][ وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ] – (By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily! The human is in loss….(i.e. the full Surah)]. Thereafter one would give Salaam to the other].

After quoting few other narrations and then graded their authenticity, Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: In these narrations is that one gives Salaam when departing (i.e. one of gives Salaams to the other when departing after meeting). The other affair we benefit (from this report) is that the companions held onto this deed and that is the recitation of Surah Al-Asr (i.e. before departing after meeting, one recites Surah Al-Asr to the other and then gives Salaam), because we (firmly) believe that they were far removed from initiating – in the religion – a newly invented act of worship as a means of getting close to Allaah by way of it; rather the only reason they did this was due to something established through Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] – either by way of a statement of his, deed or tacit approval. [1] Innocent Child Informs a British Naturalist -(Evolutionist) Mulhid – That Spiders Are His Favorite! [Reflection and Lessons]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

The likeness of those who take Auliya’ (protectors and helpers) other than Allaah is as the likeness of a spider, who builds (for itself) a house, but verily, the frailest (weakest) of houses is the spider’s house, if they but knew. [Surah Al-Ankabut. Aayah 41]

Allaah mentioned that they are weak and that those whom they take as protectors and helpers are weaker than them. So with regards to their weakness and their goal behind taking others as protectors and helpers besides Allaah, they are similar to a spider that builds a house and it is the frailest and weakest of houses. Based on this parable, the Mushrikoon become much weaker when they take others as protectors and helpers besides Allaah, and they do not benefit from those they take as protectors and helpers besides Allaah, just as Allaah stated [in another Aayah]:

وَٱتَّخَذُواْ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً۬ لِّيَكُونُواْ لَهُمۡ عِزًّ۬ا
كَلَّا‌ۚ سَيَكۡفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِہِمۡ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيۡہِمۡ ضِدًّا

And they have taken (for worship) Aaliha (gods) besides Allah, that they might give them honour, power and glory (and also protect them from Allah’s Punishment etc.). Nay, but they (the so-called gods) will deny their worship of them, and become opponents to them (on the Day of Resurrection). [Surah Maryam. Aayaat 81-82]
And Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَٱتَّخَذُواْ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً۬ لَّعَلَّهُمۡ يُنصَرُونَ
لَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ نَصۡرَهُمۡ وَهُمۡ لَهُمۡ جُندٌ۬ مُّحۡضَرُونَ

And they have taken besides Allaah Aaliha (gods), hoping that they might be helped (by those so-called gods). They cannot help them, but they will be brought forward as a troop against those who worshipped them (at the time of Reckoning). [Surah Yaa Seen. Aayaat 74-75]

And after mentioning the destruction of the nations of the Mushrikoon, Allaah said:

We wronged them not, but they wronged themselves. So their Aaliha (gods), other than Allah, whom they invoked, profited them naught when there came the Command of your Lord, nor did they add aught (to their lot) but destruction. [Surah Hud. Aayah 101]

These four places in the Qur’aan show that the one who takes protectors and helpers besides Allaah- through whom he seeks to strengthen himself, behave arrogantly and prevail- will not achieve except the opposite, and there is a lot more about this affair in the Qur’aan. This is one of the finest parables and the clearest proofs regarding the falsehood of Shirk and the deprivation of the one who commits Shirk, and that he will achieve the opposite of what he seeks. (1)

Allaah gave this similitude regarding those who worship others alongside Him, seeking honour, strength and benefit by way of it; but Allaah says that the affair is the opposite of the goal they seek, because their likeness is that of a spider that builds a house to protect itself from the heat, cold and harm; but the frailest and weakest of houses is the spider’s house.

The spider is one of those weak animals and its house is one of the weakest of houses, and building its house does not increase it in anything except weakness. Likewise, this is the case regarding those who take protectors and helpers besides Allaah; they are in need and incapable in every way when they take protectors and helpers besides Allaah to seek honour and help by way of them; so they increase weakness on their weakness, and feebleness on their feebleness, because indeed they rely on them in many of their affairs related to their well-being and entrust it to them, refrain from achieving it themselves and [hoping] that these [so-called] protectors and helpers will fulfil it; but they forsake them- neither receive anything [useful, beneficial etc] nor the least [gain, benefit etc] from their help. Had they been acquainted with the reality of knowledge- their situation and that of those whom they take as protectors and helpers besides Allaah, they would not have done so; rather they would have freed themselves from them and take Allaah as Protector and Helper- The Lord Who is able to do all things, The One Who Bestows His Special Mercy to the Believers; Who – when a servant takes Him as a Protector and an Ally, He suffices him, looks after both his religious and worldly affairs, increase him in strength upon strength in his heart [i.e. Eemaan], his body [i.e. grant him ability to seek after what is beneficial etc], in all his circumstances and deeds. (2)

Belief In Evolution

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated regarding the belief that the origin of the human is an ape: This statement is evil, falsehood, an opposition to the Book of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic], an opposition to the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] and an opposition to the consensus of the pious predecessors of this Ummah. This statement is well known from Darwin and he is a liar regarding that which he has stated; rather the origin of the human being is his well-known state – neither an ape nor other than it, rather he was created as a rational human being from earth and that is our father Aadam [peace and blessings be upon him], just as Allaah [The Exalted] said: [وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الإِنسَانَ مِنْ سُلالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ – And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth)]. [Surah al-Muminoon. Aayah 12]
It is obligated on a servant to believe that Aadam was not an ape and that Aadam’s [alayhis salaam] origin is the same as what the human being is at present – neither an ape nor other than it. The statement that his original state was that of an ape is an evil statement and falsehood; rather if it is stated that the one who utters this statement has committed Kufr, then that would be considered a good reason for saying so. What is clearer – and Allaah knows best – is that the one who utters this statement [i.e. that Aadam’s origin is an ape] whilst knowing that which the Sharee’ah has brought regarding this affair, then he is a kaafir, because he has belied Allaah, belied Allaah’s Messenger and belied the Book of Allaah regarding the creation of Aadam. (3) NB: Takfeer [i.e. declaring a Muslim as an unbeliever or removing him from the fold of Islaam] has principles and passing this judgement against specific individuals is the job of the upright scholars. Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated that it is tantamount to disbelief in Allaah to believe that the origin of the human being is an ape because it is a denial of the noble Qur’aan and the consensus of the Muslims [i.e. the scholars]. (4)

Al-Allaamah Muqbil Bin Haadee Al-Waadi’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him) stated about the theory of evolution: “This theory is considered Kufr (that exits a Muslim from Islam if he believes it).
