Following a Religion other than Islaam – Shaykh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan

Shaikh Saaleh al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding the statement of Allaah [The Most High]:

“وَمَن يَبۡتَغِ غَيۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَٰمِ دِينٗا فَلَن يُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ”

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”  Surah Aal-E-Imran, Ayah 85

First Benefit:

The definition of Islaam, which is to submit to Allah with Tawhid (singling out Allaah with all worship), obeying him and freeing oneself from shirk (worshipping other than him) and its people. This is Islaam.

Second Benefit:

It is false to adhere to all other religions, except Islaam- the religion which Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] brought; meaning, those religions are false after they have been abrogated, for indeed it is not allowed to act upon what has been abrogated because this is acting upon a divine legislation whose time has elapsed, so whoever remains upon it is following a religion other than the religion ordained by Allaah.

Third Benefit:

It is obligated on the people of the scripture to follow Muhammad (ﷺ) because his religion is Islaam. As for following other than Muhammad (ﷺ) then this is not considered to be Islaam because it has been abrogated and its time has elapsed, and all the people of the earth are now commanded to follow Muhammad (ﷺ).

Fourth Benefit:

Whoever dies whilst following a religion other than Islaam, then he will be from the people of the hell fire, because Allah (The Most High) said:

“فَلَن يُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ…”

“….it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers”

and Allah (The Most High) said:

” إِنَّهُۥ مَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُ ٱلنَّارُۖ وَمَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِنۡ أَنصَار…”

“Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers.” Surah Al-Ma’idah, Ayah 72

ِand He (The Most High) said regarding the Hell Fire:  “أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ..”  “prepared for the disbelievers.” Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 24

Fifth Benefit:

This verse is a refutation against all innovations and newly invented matters in the religion, because they do not belong to the religion of Islaam, even if the person claims that he is seeking Allaah’s Pleasure and Reward by way of it and that he is upon obedience and desires good, but rather his worship through acts of innovation and newly invented matters in the religion will make him from amongst the losers [of those deeds] in the hereafter, because he is following a religion other than Islaam [in relation to those innovated acts of worship].

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “‏ “‏من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد

“Whoever performs an action contrary to our way (i.e., Islam) will have it rejected. [MUSLIM]

and He (ﷺ) said: “وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُورِ؛ فَإِنَّ كُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ…”

Beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for verily every newly invented matter in the religion is an innovation in religion, and every innovation in the religion is misguidance.” [Reported by Abu Dawud]

The people of bidah are different from each other with regards to how distant they are from the religion and exiting its legislation, because amongst them are those who completely exit the religion if their bidah is tantamount to major disbelief, such as the bidah of worshipping graves and tombs, sacrificing to other than Allah and vowing to other than Allah, for indeed these are religious innovations that are tantamount to major disbelief and it exits a person from Islaam, because it is ascribing partners to Allaah in worship. (Ref 1)

And if the bidah does not necessitate apostasy, then it is still an act of misguidance,  as he (ﷺ) said: “Verily every newly invented matter in the religion is an innovation in religion, and every innovation in religion is misguidance.” This type of bidah causes a person’s Eemaan (faith) to be deficient and distances him from the religion in accordance to the bidah that is committed, however the person is neither judged to be a disbeliever nor that he’ll remain in the hell fire forever, even though – as the scholars have stated – a bidah is a path that can lead to disbelief; it can lead a person bit by bit until he exits the religion of Islam.

Ref 1: NB: Even if a person falls into major disbelief or major shirk, then still it is not the responsibility of anyone to declare such a person a disbeliever, rather his affair is dealt with by the scholars. The Obligation of Pronouncing Faith And Not Just Affirming It In One’s Heart – Shaykh Fawzaan

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His Statement (The Most High):

Say (O Muhammad): “We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob) and Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)] and what was given to Musa (Moses), ‘Iesa (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allah) we have submitted (in Islam).”

-Surah Aal-E-Imran, Ayah

“Taken from this verse is the obligation to utter the testimony of faith (al-Imaan) and it is not enough to only affirm it in the heart, just like  some of the Murji’ah say (1). Faith, as it has been established by Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah (2) comprises of statement of the tongue, belief of the heart and actions of the limbs, therefore it is an obligation to utter the testimony of faith and not just to affirm it in the heart, because the disbelievers during the time of the Messenger affirmed that he was the Messenger of Allaah, but they refused to utter and testify that he is the Messenger of Allah, and because of that they disbelieved, so affirmation in their hearts did not benefit them, just as Allah says:

قَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُۥ لَيَحۡزُنُكَ ٱلَّذِي يَقُولُونَۖ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَا يُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجۡحَدُونَ

We know indeed the grief which their words cause you (O Muhammad): it is not you that they deny, but it is the Verses (the Quran) of Allah that the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) deny.

-Surah Al-An’am, Ayah 33

And Allah said: ‘…وَجَحَدُواْ بِها’ meaning: in the ayaat (signs) of Allah.

And they belied them (those Ayat) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their ownselves were convinced thereof [i.e. those (Ayat) are from Allah, and Musa (Moses) is the Messenger of Allah in truth, but they disliked to obey Musa (Moses), and hated to believe in his Message of Monotheism]. So see what was the end of the Mufsidun (disbelievers, disobedient to Allah, evil-doers, liars.).

-Surah An-Naml, Ayah 14

This is an evidence that they knew the truthfulness of the Messengers deep in their souls, but due to arrogance and obstinacy they did not follow them and thus they became disbelievers. Their acknowledgement and affirmation in their hearts alone did not benefit them, therefore this is a refutation against the Murji’ah who say that faith is only affirmation in the heart.”

The Obligation on Everyone to follow the Prophet Muhammad

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His Statement (The Most High):

And (remember) when Allah took the Covenant of the Prophets, saying: “Take whatever I gave you from the Book and Hikmah (understanding of the Laws of Allah, etc.), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and help him.” Allah said: “Do you agree (to it) and will you take up My Covenant (which I conclude with you)?” They said: “We agree.” He said: “Then bear witness; and I am with you among the witnesses (for this).” Surah Aal-E-Imran, Ayah 81

ًWhat can be taken from this verse is that it is an obligation on everyone to follow the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم including the Jews and Christians, like Allah said:

Say (O Muhammad SAW): “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah – to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He); It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) who believes in Allah and His Words [(this Quran), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allah’s Word: “Be!” – and he was, i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary)], and follow him so that you may be guided.” Surah Al-A’raf, Ayah 158

“Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) whom they find written with them in the Taurat (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16), – he commands them for Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs).” Surah Al-A’raf, Ayah 157

So whoever does not believe in the Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and does not follow him then he is indeed a disbeliever, even if he claims to follow the religion of Moses just like the Jews claim, or even if he claims to follow the religion of Jesus just like the Christians claim for Allah ordered them all to follow Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم  the Messengers  were commanded with following him also because Allah took the covenant from them that when Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم was sent he would surely be believed in and helped.

The Covenant Allaah Took From The Prophets- By Shaykh Saaleh Fawzaan

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His Statement (The Most High):

And (remember) when Allah took the Covenant of the Prophets, saying: “Take whatever I gave you from the Book and Hikmah (understanding of the Laws of Allah, etc.), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and help him.” Allah said: “Do you agree (to it) and will you take up My Covenant (which I conclude with you)?” They said: “We agree.” He said: “Then bear witness; and I am with you among the witnesses (for this).” [Surah Aal Imraan, Ayah 81]

ًWhat can be taken from this verse is Allaah’s Testimony and the Testimony of the Prophets regarding the disbelief of one who does not believe in Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , because Allaah took the covenant from the Prophets to believe in Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم  and help him, and the Prophets bore witness to that [Ref 1] [End of quote. Abu Idrees].

Additional benefit from Imaam Ibn Katheer [rahimahullaah] on the above statement of Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [hafidhahullaah]

Imaam Ibn Katheer [rahimahullaah] stated in his commentary on Surah Aal Imraan Aayah 81: Allaah [The Exalted] informed us that He took a covenant from every Messenger He sent – between Aadam and Eesaa – that regardless the Book and religious laws given to them and the status they reach, they must believe and help the next Messenger when he comes to them, and that which they have been given of knowledge and Prophethood cannot prevent them from following the other Prophet sent after them. Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] is the seal of the Prophets [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them] until the day of Judgement and He is the Greatest Imaam who is to be followed in every era. [Ref 2] [End of quote. Salaficentre.com Admin]

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan continued: Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said: ” فَٱشۡهَدُواْ ” meaning ” then bear witness” and Allah also bore witness to that by saying ” وَأَنَا۠ مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِين ” meaning ” and I am with you among the witnesses.” So whoever does not believe in Muhammad, then he is a disbeliever and that is what Allaah and the Prophets were witnesses to, even if a person claims to believe in Moses, like the Jews do or he claims to believe in Jesus like the Christians do, when they don’t believe in Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم  and they don’t follow him, then neither is true and valid faith nor religion ascribed to them because after the sending of the Messenger, everyone has been ordered to follow him and obey him صلى الله عليه وسلم. Allah Did Not Order You to Worship The Angels and Prophets – By Shaykh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His [i.e. Allaah’s] Statement

“وَلَا يَأۡمُرَكُمۡ أَن تَتَّخِذُواْ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ أَرۡبَابًاۚ أَيَأۡمُرُكُم بِٱلۡكُفۡرِ بَعۡدَ إِذۡ أَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ”

“Nor would he order you to take angels and Prophets for lords (gods). Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted to Allah’s Will?” [Surah Aal-Imraan, Aayah 80]

What can be taken from this verse is that Ar-Rabb (Lord) can be used and intended to mean Al-Ilaah [The only deity who has the right to be worshipped],  just like Al-Ilaah can also be used and intended to mean Ar-Rabb. And due to this reason, Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhaab رحمه الله said that when Ar-Rabb and Al-Ilaah are mentioned together they have different meanings; so the meaning of Ar-Rabb would be Al-Khaaliq (The Creator), Ar-Raaziq (The Provider), Al-Muhyee (The One who gives life) and Al-Mumeet (The one who causes death), and the meaning of Al-Ilaah would be Al-Ma’bood (The One who is worshipped). And when one of them is mentioned on their own, the meaning of the other is included; so if Ar-Rabb is mentioned only then it includes the meaning of Al-Ilaah and when Al-Ilaah is mentioned only then it includes the meaning of Ar-Rabb. An example of this is His [i.e. Allaah’s] statement:

” و لَا يَأۡمُرَكُمۡ أَن تَتَّخِذُواْ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ أَرۡبَابًاۚ أَيَأۡمُرُكُم بِٱلۡكُفۡرِ بَعۡدَ إِذۡ أَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ”

“Nor would he order you to take angels and Prophets for lords (gods). Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted to Allah’s Will?

Meaning “as objects of worship besides Allah سبحانه وتعالى”.

[2] Excerpts From Tafseer of Surah An-Nahl – Referred to As Surah An-Ni’am By Some of The Scholars [Aayaat 3-9]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

He has created the heavens and the earth in truth. High be He Exalted above all they associate as partners with Him. He has created the human being from Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge), then behold, this same (human being) becomes an open opponent. And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth and numerous benefits, and of them you eat. And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning. And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful. And (He has created) horses, mules and donkeys, for you to ride and as an adornment. And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge. And upon Allaah is the responsibility to explain the Straight Path (i.e. Islamic Monotheism for mankind i.e. to show them legal and illegal, good and evil things, etc. so, whosoever accepts the guidance, it will be for his own benefit and whosoever goes astray, it will be for his own destruction), but there are ways that turn aside (such as Paganism, distorted Judaism and Christianity after the departure of Musa and Eesaa etc.). And had He willed, He would have guided you all (mankind). [Surah An-Nahl. Aayaat 3-9]

This Surah is called Surah An-Ni’am [the Surah of blessings], because in the beginning Allaah mentions the original sources of blessings and their foundations, and at the end of it He mentions the things that complement and perfect them.

Allaah informs us that He created the heavens and the earth in truth, so that people may know – by way of clear proofs – the greatness of the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and that which He possesses of Perfect Attributes; and so that they know that He created both of them as a dwelling place for His slaves who worship Him based on that which He has commanded of beliefs and acts of worship, which He sent down through the speech of His Messengers. And due to this, He frees Himself from that which the polytheists ascribe to Him, saying: [تَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ  – High be He Exalted above all they associate as partners with him] – Meaning, He is far above and greater – [i.e. and free is He from all likeness, co-equals, deficiencies, faults and weaknesses, and He alone is described with all attributes of perfection] – than the partners they associate with Him, because indeed He is the Only True Deity besides whom none else should be worshipped, loved and shown humility.

After mentioning the creation of the heavens and the earth, He then mentioned that which is in both of them, and He started by mentioning the noblest and that is the human being. He said: [خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ۬   – He has created the human being from Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge)]- Meaning, He did not cease organising and looking after its affair, alternating it from one state to another higher state of development and growth, until it became a complete human being – with perfect external and internal limbs [i.e. mental and physical faculties].

Thereafter, He granted the human being abundant blessings, but when the human being reached this complete physical and mental state, he becomes boastful and self-amazed, [فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌ۬ مُّبِينٌ۬  – then behold, this same (human being) becomes an open opponent]- Meaning, either argues against his Lord, disbelieves [and shows ingratitude], argues against the Messengers of his Lord, belies the Aayaat [signs, proofs, revelations] of his Lord and forgets how he started as a created being; and that which Allaah has granted him of blessings, he utilises it to commit acts of disobedience; or this may mean that Allaah created this offspring of Aadam [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] from a drop of semen and did not cease alternating him from one state to another until he becomes a complete sane person with intellect; with the ability to think, argue and engage in discussion; therefore the servant should thank his Lord Who brought him to this stage in which he had no ability to acquire anything from them.

[And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth (warm clothing), and numerous benefits, and of them you eat. And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning. And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful] – Meaning: Allaah created them for you – for your benefit and wellbeing. And from its great benefits is that you have warmth from them by making clothing, beddings and tents from their wool, hirsute, their hairs and skins; and you have other benefits in them and eat from their [meat]. [وَلَكُمۡ فِيهَا جَمَالٌ حِينَ تُرِيحُونَ وَحِينَ تَسۡرَحُونَ – And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning] – Meaning, at the time when they are going to take a rest in the evening and when they are being taken out to graze. This is because the cattle do not [enjoy] any of that beauty [seen from them], but rather indeed you are the ones who enjoy their beauty, just as you beautify yourselves with your clothing, children and wealth, and you adore that.  [وَتَحۡمِلُ أَثۡقَالَڪُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَلَدٍ۬ لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ بَـٰلِغِيهِ إِلَّا بِشِقِّ ٱلۡأَنفُسِ‌ۚ ۬ – And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful]- Meaning, you ride on some of them and others carry what you desire of heavy loads to faraway lands and regions. [إِنَّ رَبَّكُمۡ لَرَءُوفٌ۬ رَّحِيمٌ۬ – Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful]- Meaning, He subjugated to you that which you need and cannot do without.

[وَٱلۡخَيۡلَ وَٱلۡبِغَالَ وَٱلۡحَمِيرَ لِتَرۡڪَبُوهَا وَزِينَةً۬‌ۚ – (He has created) horses, mules and donkeys, for you to ride and as an adornment] – Meaning, sometimes you utilise them for riding and at other times for beauty and beautification. [وَيَخۡلُقُ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ –  And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge]- Meaning, the things utilised by the people as means of transportation on land, at sea and in the air, and that which they utilise for their benefit and wellbeing after the revelation of the Qur’aan, because indeed Allaah did not mention them specifically; rather He [The Exalted] – in His Book – did not mention except what His servants knew at the time or its similarity. As for if he mentioned that which had no similarity at the time, then they would neither have known it nor understood what is intended by it; therefore he mentioned the basis [or the foundation of an affair] which included the things they knew and the things they did not know, just as Allaah mentioned the bliss in paradise and named the things we know and have seen their similarity, such as date palm trees, grapes and pomegranates, and then He mentioned in general the things whose similarity is unknown to us, as He stated in another Aayah: [فِيہِمَا مِن كُلِّ فَـٰكِهَةٍ۬ زَوۡجَانِ   – In them (both) will be every kind of fruit in pairs]. Likewise, in this Aayah [i.e. An-Nahl Aayah 8], Allaah mentioned the transportation we know, such as horses, mules, donkeys, camels and ships, and mentioned in general the others, saying: [وَيَخۡلُقُ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ –  And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge].

After mentioning the tangible path and that He created for the servants that which they utilise for journeys, such as camels and other them, He then mentioned the religious path that leads to His [Pleasure]; so He said: [وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ قَصۡدُ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمِنۡهَا جَآٮِٕرٌ۬‌ۚ – And upon Allah is the responsibility to explain the Straight Path (i.e. Islamic Monotheism for mankind i.e. to show them legal and illegal, good and evil things, etc. so, whosoever accepts the guidance, it will be for his own benefit and whosoever goes astray, it will be for his own destruction), but there are ways that turn aside (such as Paganism, distorted Judaism and Christianity after the departure of Musa and Eesaa etc.)] – Meaning, the straight path, and that is the only direct and genuine path that leads to the [pleasure] of Allaah. As for the path that turn aside in creed and deeds, it is everything that opposes the straight path, because it severs a person from the path of Allaah and leads to the destination of misery; therefore those who are rightly guided traverse the straight path by the permission of their Lord, and the deviated ones deviate from it.

[وَلَوۡ شَآءَ لَهَدَٮٰڪُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ – And had He willed, He would have guided you all (mankind)]- Meaning, but He guided some out of His kindness and Grace, and did not guide others based on His Perfect Wisdom and Justice. [Ref 1] This happens based on Allaah’s Perfect Wisdom and Just Decree, as recompense for one’s wickedness. [Ref 2] Such a person was not forced to go astray, rather he made a choice, even though his choice is under the Will of Allaah. We do not know what was in the hearts of those who deviated, but we know – with absolute certainty – that Allaah passes Just Judgments and He does not commit injustice against anything; rather it is the people who wrong themselves. [Ref 3]

Az-Zujaaj [rahimahullaah] said, “It is Allaah who will clarify the straight path and call to it with Hujaj [i.e. clear and overwhelming proofs that defeats all the obstinate and stubborn ones] and Burhaan [i.e. proofs that clarify and distinguish between truth and falsehood in everything]; “But there are ways that turn aside”; Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said, “They are the different types of desires [i.e. evil desires]”. Ibnul Mubaarak [rahimahullaah] said, “They are the (evil) desires and the innovations in religion”. [Ref 4]

The Call of the Prophets and their Followers is One – Shaykh Fawzaan

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His Statement (The Most High):

It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allah has given the Book and Al-Hukma (the knowledge and understanding of the laws of religion, etc.) and Prophethood to say to the people: “Be my worshippers rather than Allah’s.” On the contrary (he would say): “Be you Rabbaaniyun (learned men of religion who practise what they know and also preach others), because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it.” (Surah Aali-Imraan:79)

What is understood from this verse is that the path of the prophets and their followers is one, undeviating, from the first of them (prophets) to the last of them. All of prophets brought with them the command of tawheed and the forbiddance of shirk, Allah (The Most High) said:

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٖ رَّسُولًا أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّٰغُوتَۖ

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc.i. e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).”  Surah An-Nahl, Ayah 36

And similarly the followers of the messengers, they also carry out this duty which the messengers brought with them, and it (the duty) is the calling to the worship of Allah alone and not ascribing partners to him in worship and leaving the worship of other than him, just like what He صلى الله عليه وسلم  said:

وإن العلماء ورثة الأنبياء وإن الأنبياء لم يورثوا دينارًا ولا درهما وإنما ورثوا العلم‏.‏ فمن أخذه أخذ بحظ وافر……

The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets who bequeath neither dinar nor dirham but only that of knowledge; and he who acquires it, has in fact acquired an abundant portion. (1)

The Messengers and their Followers Do Not Call to Shirk – Shaykh Fawzaan

Shaikh Salih al Fawzaan حفظه الله comments regarding His Statement (The Most High):

It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allah has given the Book and Al-Hukma (the knowledge and understanding of the laws of religion, etc.) and Prophethood to say to the people: “Be my worshippers rather than Allah’s.” On the contrary (he would say): “Be you Rabbaaniyun (learned men of religion who practise what they know and also preach others), because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it.” (Surah Aali-Imraan:79)

What we understand from this verse is that the messengers and their followers do not call to shirk, rather the only ones that call to shirk are the enemies of the messengers (عليهم الصلاة و السلام) and the enemies of the Rabbaniyun (learned men of religion who practise what they know and also preach others), so these enemies are those that call people to shirk, so if you see someone who calls to shirk and to the worship of tombs and graves in this time and other than this time, and he makes that look desirable to the people then you should know (for sure) that this person is an opposer of the messengers and an opposer of the Rabbaaniyun, even if he is a scholar. If he neither calls to tawheed nor forbids shirk, then he is only a person who knows and not a Rabbaaniy, rather he has knowledge but does not act in accordance to his knowledge. He is someone who earns Allaah’s Anger, because he knows the truth but does not act in accordance to it.

So this ruling is from the greatest of what this noble verse shows, that the one who is truly from the followers of the messengers is he who calls to Islamic Monotheism, the worship of Allah alone and not ascribing partners to him in worship, he forbids the people from the worship of anything other than Allaah, such as idols, statues, trees, stones, graves and tombs; but if his call is in opposition to this way then he is calling to the worship of other than Allah, because this call of his is not upon the way of the messengers, nor upon the way of the Rabbaniyun, rather he is a scholar of misguidance just as he  صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

إنما أخاف على أمتي الأئمة المضلين

Indeed what I fear the most for my ummah are the misguided scholars. (3)

Daily Ramadhaan Reminder Day 4 – How the Salaf were with the Quran in Ramadhan – Shaykh Fawzaan

“The guidance of the Prophet ﷺ with the Quran, is that he use to obtain it from Jibreel (alayhis salaam), Jibreel would convey it onto him from his Lord. So the Prophet ﷺ would begin with acting upon it and teaching it to the people, this is how his guidance was with the Quran.”
