In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Allaah [The Exalted] said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِن تَنصُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ يَنصُرۡكُمۡ وَيُثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَكُمۡ
O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allaah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.”
Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيۡنَا نَصۡرُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ-And (as for) the believers it was incumbent upon Us to help (them)].
Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, ”However, this (victory and help) has conditions and they are: One should firmly adhere to the Religion of Allaah and being steadfast, and firmly believe in Allaah and His Messengers. This is the path and prerequisite that will bring about Allaah’s Help, just as Allaah [The Most High] said:
Verily, Allah will help those who help His (Cause). Truly, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty. Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) order for Iqamat-as-Salat. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational Salat (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the Zakat and they enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that Islam has forbidden). And in another AAyah Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:
Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me.
This promise of Allaah is for those who are steadfast upon Eemaan, guidance and righteous deeds. Indeed Allaah will certainly grant them succession in the earth and the authority to practice their religion. Allaah will give them a safe security and protect them from the evil and plots of their enemies, and grant them victory. [Ref 1]
Allaah [The Exalted] said: [إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ – Verily! Allah will not change the condition of a people as long as they do not change what is in themselves.] [Ar-Radd: Ayah: 11]
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: The wording of this (Aayah) shows that Allaah does not (remove) His blessings which He bestowed upon His slaves until they (move away from) obedience to Him and disobey Him. [Ref 2]
Allaah [The Most High] said:
The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform the prayer and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. Allah has promised to the believers -men and women, – Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever, and beautiful mansions in Gardens of ‘Adn (Eden Paradise). But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success. [Surah At-Tawbah. 71-72]
And those who disbelieve are allies to one another, (and) if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so (i.e. become allies to make victorious Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism), there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) and oppression on earth, and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism). [Surah Al-Anfaal. Aayah 73]
So, we say to the deceitful analysts, ”When the above was established by the Muslims, they were leaders of the world and this leadership will be granted to them if they return to true obedience to Allaah and the final Messenger”. Disobedience and sinning brings about calamity and humiliation, however there will always be people of guidance and steadfastness. Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said: ”[A person] should not lose hope when trials and evil increases. Indeed, he has to remain upon tranquillity and should make others tranquil when trials occur, and he should say: ‘’All Praise is due to Allaah, we are upon guidance and a clear Religion. Solace is close by and evil will cease to exist by the permission of Allaah’’ This is what is incumbent upon THE PEOPLE OF GOOD AND THE SCHOLARS–that they have tranquillity and make the people tranquil; because this (EVIL) is something that will cease to exist by the permission of Allaah and solace will come after it. It is not permissible for a person to say: ‘’the people are destroyed.’’ This is not permissible; rather (a person) should make the people tranquil, firm upon goodness, whilst expecting assistance, for indeed the good end is for the people of piety. Therefore, no matter how great the evil and trial is, it will cease to exist. He (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’A group of my followers will remain manifest upon the truth. They will neither be harmed by those who forsake them nor by those who oppose them till Allaah’s command arrives.” [i.e. the day of judgement] [Bukhari and Muslim]
Therefore, Islaam will not cease to continue and all praise be to Allaah. The Religion and the Qur’aan will not cease to exist until that appointed time which the prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) has informed us of – that at the end of time the Qur’aan will be taken away from the hearts of men and from the masaahif (i.e. the copies of the Qur’aan); but this will be at the time of the destruction of the world. (However) good will continue to exist whilst the Qur’an, the Sunnah and the Qiblah are present, even though there is one who is led away from it and becomes misguided; and even though there is one who deviates from it and becomes deviated, as the saying goes: ‘’Trial has its victims’’. It takes away the one who goes with it; but the people of Eemaan will remain even if they are small in number. Even if there is one who goes along with the Fitnah, and the one who goes astray and the one who comes along with it, (still) the truth and its people will remain and all praise be to Allaah. The truth is present, as Allaah (The Exalted and Most High) said: [إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ – Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) 15:9]
A person should not lose hope nor should he despair. He should not make the people lose hope of a return to goodness. He should not make the people lose hope regarding (the fact) that truth will prevail and falsehood will be repelled because Allaah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) has made that promise and He does not fail to fulfill His promise. Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’The Religion is aided when put to the test; therefore do not be amazed for this is the way of Ar-Rahmaan (The Most Merciful)”. [Ref 3]
Personal Desire For Authority and Leadership Is Forbidden
Imaam Al-Bukhaari [rahimahullaah] said, ‘’Chapter: If somebody does not seek authority of ruling, then Allaah will surely help him [if he is given such authority].’’
Narrated Abdur-Rahmaan Bin Samura: The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, ‘’O Abdur-Rahmaan! Do not seek to be a ruler, for if you are given authority on your demand, then you will be held responsible for it, but if you are given it without asking [for it], then you will be helped [by Allaah] in it. If you ever take an oath to do something and later on you find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do what is better.’’ [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari, Number 7146]
Few Reminders From Fat-hul Baari:
The one who seeks authority and receives it will not be helped. It is well known that to be in authority is accompanied by difficulties, so the one who does not receive help from Allaah will be trapped within it and thus loses both his Dunyah and Aakhirah. Therefore, the sensible person does not ask for authority, but if he is suitable and it is given to him without him asking for it, then indeed the truthful and trustworthy one [i.e. The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wsallam)] has promised him that Allaah will help him. [Ref 4]
Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The difference between the desire for righteous leadership as opposed to merely desiring leadership: It is the difference between exalting the command of Allaah and being sincere to Allaah as opposed to love of exalting oneself and hastening towards the fulfilment of desires. Indeed the one who is sincere to Allaah and exalts Him, he loves that his Lord is obeyed and not disobeyed; [loves that] Allaah’s Word should be uppermost and that all affairs of the religion should be established sincerely for the sake of Allaah, and [that] the servants should obey Allaah’s commands and keep away from what Allaah has forbidden. He is sincere in his servitude to Allaah and sincere to Allaah’s creation in calling them to the path of Allaah. So he loves to be [an upright] leader in the religion; rather he asks his Lord to make him from the leaders of the righteous people who are followed, just as he is a follower of the righteous. Therefore, if this servant -[i.e. this person] who calls to Allaah- loves that he is considered dignified in the eyes [of the people], revered and beloved in their hearts and is one followed amongst them, so that he is trusted by them and they follow the example of the Messenger through him, then this [desire of his] does not harm him; rather he is praised for it. That is because the caller to Allaah loves that Allaah is obeyed and singled out in worship. He loves to be a means by way of which [people] are aided to [obey Allaah, single out Allaah in worship and follow the Messenger]. And due to this, [when] Allaah mentioned those chosen slaves of His- whom He praised in His revelation and will grant the best of reward on the day they meet Him- He mentioned them with the best of their deeds and characteristics, and then said: [ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبۡ لَنَا مِنۡ أَزۡوَٲجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعۡيُنٍ۬ وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا – And those who say: “Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders for the Muttaqun]. (pious) 25:74
So they ask Allaah to grant them the comfort of the eye by making their wives and offspring obedient to Allaah, and to grant them happiness in their hearts due to being followed by the righteous in obedience and servitude to Allaah. That is because a trustworthy leader in the religion co-operates with [others] upon obedience [to Allaah and His Messenger], and that is to call them to [sound] leadership in the religion, whose foundation is patience and certainty, as Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَجَعَلۡنَا مِنۡہُمۡ أَٮِٕمَّةً۬ يَہۡدُونَ بِأَمۡرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُواْۖ وَڪَانُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ – And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). [32:24]
Therefore, in their supplication -[in Soorah Al-Furqaan Ayah 74]- to Allaah that He makes them leaders of the righteous people, is that Allaah guides them, grants them success, bless them with beneficial knowledge and righteous actions–outwardly and inwardly–without which [sound] leadership in the religion cannot be achieved.
This is different from [merely] seeking leadership, for indeed its seekers hasten to obtain it in order to achieve their goals, [such as] exaltedness in the earth; enslavement of the hearts to them, attachment to them and aiding them in all their goals, whilst they are exalted and everyone subservient to them. This pursuit of leadership brings about corruption-which none can enumerate except Allaah- such as rebellion, envy, transgression, enmity, oppression, trials, being ardent in defending oneself at the expense of violating the rights of Allaah, exalting those despised by Allaah and belittling those honoured by Allaah. [Ref 5]
Yoosuf Bin Asbaat [rahimahullaah] said: I heard Sufyaan [rahimahullaah] saying: ‘’I have not seen lesser abstinence in anything besides [love] of leadership! You see a man abstaining from food, drink, wealth and clothing, but when leadership is presented, he becomes passionate about it. [Ref 6]
Imaam Ibn Rajab [rahimahullaah] said: Eagerness for high status is of two types: The first type is seeking high status through leadership, authority and wealth. This is very dangerous and in most cases it prevents [a person] from [acquiring] the good of the afterlife, its nobility, honour and elevated station. Allaah [The Most High] said: [تِلْكَ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا ۚ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ – That home of the Hereafter [i.e. Paradise], We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqoon]. [Al-Qasas. Ayah 83]
The second type is seeking high status and to be raised in status above the people through the religious affairs, such as knowledge, deeds and Zuhd. This is more abominable than the first type and greater in danger and corruption, because knowledge, deeds and Zuhd are [affairs] by way of which one seeks what Allaah [has prepared for His slaves] of high station and everlasting bliss [in the afterlife]- a means to drawing close to Him [i.e. by way of sincere and righteous deeds] and to receive His favours [in the worldly life and afterlife]. Imaam Sufyaan Ath-thawree [rahimahullaah] said: “Knowledge has more virtue because it is for the [purpose] of attaining fear of Allaah; and if not, it is just like all other things.’’ [Ref 7]
Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said: Therefore, he [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] clarified that the corruption [caused] through craving for wealth and high status in the religion cannot be lesser than the corruption [caused] by two hungry wolves let loose among a livestock, and that is [something] manifest; for indeed there is [nothing] of this [type] of craving in the sound religion. That is because when the heart tastes the sweetness of servitude to Allaah and love of Him, nothing else becomes more beloved to it than that. And through this, evil and immorality are averted from the people who are sincere to Allaah. [Ref 8]
Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] also said: The seeker of leadership- even through falsehood- becomes pleased with a statement that contains an exaltation of him, even if it is falsehood; and becomes angered by a statement that contains a rebuke against him, even if it is truth. [As for] the believer [i.e. the one with strong Eemaan and fear of Allaah], he is pleased with a statement of truth whether it is for or against him; and he is angered by a statement of falsehood whether it is for or against him. That is because Allaah [The Most High] loves truth, truthfulness and justice, and He hates lies and oppression. [Ref 9]
Obedience to The Rulers And Return to The Authentic Sunnah In Times of Disagreement
Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: The Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: ‘’Verily, the one who live among you after me will see a lot of differing, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khulafaa.’’
This is another means to safety – adherence to the Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Khulafah: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthmaan and Ali [radiyallaahu anhum]. They are the successors of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] whose path is to be followed together with the Sunnah of Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam.
And he [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: ”Ikhtilaafan Kathiirah” [i.e. a lot of differing will occur] and not ”Ikhtilaafan Yaseerah [little or minor differing]; rather it is a lot. The Ummah cannot find safety from this [blameworthy] differing, except by adhering to the Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi- wasallam] and to that which his Rightly Guided Khulafaah, the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar were upon. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلۡأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِـإِحۡسَـٰنٍ۬ رَّضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡہُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتٍ۬ تَجۡرِى تَحۡتَهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ -And the foremost to embrace Islaam of the Muhaajiroon (those who migrated from Makkah to Al Madeena) and the Ansaar (the citizens of Al Madeenah who helped and gave aid to the Muhaajiroon) and also those who followed them exactly (in faith). Allaah is well pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise) [9:100]
When the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] informed of us of the differing and splitting that will occur, he said. ”’The Jews split into 71 sects, and the Christians split into 72 sects; and my Ummah will split into 73 sects, all of them in the fire except one. We [i.e. the sahaabah] said: ‘Which one is it O Messenger of Allaah?’ He said: Those who are upon [the path] which I and my companions are upon”. So, there is no safeguard against the trials of [blameworthy] differing in every era, especially during the end of time, except by adhering to the (authentic) Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the path of his companions. This is what will protect us from the fire and this why Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah are called ‘The Saved Sect”– the sect that is safeguarded against the fire on the Day of Judgment. And those in opposition will not be saved due their opposition and splitting away from the saved sect, except those who are firm upon [the Sunnah of the Messenger and the path of the Sahaabah]. And firmness upon the truth, the Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the way of the companions cannot be accomplished except by way of beneficial knowledge. How can one be firm upon something, yet he [or she] is ignorant of it? We must learn the Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the path his companions were upon, until we become firm upon it and adhere to it. [Ref 10]
These are some of the means to strength and victory. The deceitful analysts amongts the demagogues, ideologues, orientalists and neocolonialists are well aware of this fact, so they do their utmost to divert weak Muslims from this path. Al-Allaamah Abdullah Bin Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Humaid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: ”Zimmer – a Catholic philosopher and theologian- sent Christian Missionaries to the various regions of the Arab-Islamic Countries. He gathered them before dispersing them and said, ‘Inform me of what you will be doing in the Muslim countries?’ One of them said: ‘I will convert five to Christianity’. Another said: ‘I will convert two to Christianity, and I will give them the blessings of Christianity and make them thankful’. He (Zimmer) said: ‘You have not understood our desired objective! It is not possible to convert the Muslims to Christianity; it is not possible for the Muslims to reject their religion, except if you teach them. The most important thing is that you teach the Muslim children by sowing doubts in their souls about their religion and rejection in their souls against their countries. And eventually when one of them sets up a centre in his country, he will give no importance to anything else except his desires. And when he gathers wealth, he will do so according to his desires. Therefore, he ends up having no religion and no connection with his Creator. Therefore, cultivate the lands of Muhammad [i.e. the Muslim lands] upon this’. And he (Zimmer) said in another speech of his: ‘Indeed, Islaam is like a tree, therefore cut off its branches. Its branches are the children of the Muslims, therefore teach them so that they can aid you to cut off the tree of Islaam in their countries. You will not be able to cut it off yourselves, rather teach their children to aid you in uprooting it in their countries”’. [Ref 11]
Imaam Abdul-Azeez Bin Baaz [rahimahullaah] said: They seek to conquer the intellects of the Muslim children and nurture their hearts upon their views, either by making them feel that their ways are superior in every affair-be it in affairs of creed and religion, or that which they speak with by way of languages, or what they consider to be civilized manners, customs etc.. They seek to nurture a great number of Muslims in the Muslim lands until they are intoxicated with their views and return them to their lands. Then they start praising and promoting them until they become the figureheads in their countries. So they spread their ideas through these people…etc They encourage the Muslims in the Muslim lands to learn their languages at the expense of the Arabic language, which is the language of the Qur’aan- the language by way of which the Muslims perform their acts of worship. They also establish many studies that are intended to cause nuisance and glorify what they call popular literature and national heritage…..etc They prepare a large number of people amongst their people to study Islam and the Arabic language and write books, and take up teaching positions in universities- orientalists….etc They also spread propaganda that Muslim women in the Muslim lands are oppressed in order to take them out of their homes and place them where they want. But Allaah (The Most High) said:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلابِيبِهِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلا يُؤْذَيْنَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا
O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” They set up radio programmes designed to mislead gullible young Muslims who do not understand Islam and do not have sufficient knowledge, especially in Africa…. However if the Muslims exercise patience these plots will not harm them. Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَإِنْ تَصْبِرُوا وَتَتَّقُوا لا يَضُرُّكُمْ كَيْدُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ – But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V.2:2), not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allah surrounds all that they do]. [Ref 12]
Indeed, anyone who has carefully read and analysed the works of some of the contemporary demagogues, ideologues, orientalists and neocolonialists will clearly see this agenda. So, you find that there are Muslims, who do not return to the authentic Sunnah and the upright scholars of the Muslim Ummah in times of differing, rather they would seek alliances both inside and outside the nation and thus destabilise the nation in the name of so-called change, liberty and freedoms. The external instigators – amongst the deceitful western ideologues – are always very eager to take sides in the power struggle in order to fulfil their goal of divide and rule. As for the internal power-hungry opportunists, personal egoism together with personal political interest, conflict and mistrust between communities is more beloved to them than peace and security. This state of affairs gives both the terrorists [Khaarijites, ISIS and Ilk] and some of the opportunistic western ideologues to pursue their different agendas – the kharijites Terrorists raise their ugly heads and shed blood in the marketplaces, the Mosques and schools in the name of Islaam, the external instigators find a golden opportunity to support different factions and send in their men – in the name of combating terrorism. Then they use these terrorist groups, such as ISIS as an excuse to generalize and specify Muslims as violent and subversive terrorists, and even claim that Islam is a religion in crisis. And whilst the internal power-hungry opportunists – those who rebel against governments and initiate bloodshed – and the terrorists sow the seeds of discord, Western arms dealers become wealthier because the former spend their money on weapons rather than education, health, research and development. This chaotic state of affairs provides many ideologues and so-called experts with the opportunity to mislead their citizens and portray Muslims as a chaotic and divided people. This is why we rebutted the likes of Frederic Hof who stated that Legitimacy, Consent, and the Search for a Successor – A century after the end of the Ottoman Empire, no successor to Istanbul’s sultan-caliph has emerged! Finally, we say to those demagogues who slander Islaam to make a living through their fraudulent researches, we ask Allaah to guide them to the straight path, otherwise they are reminded of the Aayah:
Certainly! Allah will admit those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), while those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their abode. And many a town, stronger than your town (Makkah) (O Muhammad ) which has driven you out We have destroyed. And there was none to help them. Is he who is on a clear proof from his Lord, like those for whom their evil deeds that they do are beautified for them, while they follow their own lusts (evil desires)? [Surah Muhammad 12-14]
Truth Will Always Remain
All praise and thanks is due to Allaah who has promised to protect this religion and no one can overcome the At-Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [The Victorious Group] and Al-Firqatun Naajiyah [The Saved Sect]. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: “The best of the people are those living in my generation, then those who will follow the latter and then those who come after them. Then there will come after them people who will be treacherous and will not be trustworthy, they will bear witness without being asked to do so, and they will vow, but will never fulfil their vows, and fatness will appear among them’’.
Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said: They give false testimony, act treacherously and deceitfully. They behave in a very sinful manner and follow evil desires, except those whom Allaah safeguards amongst the Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. the aided group of Muslims upon the straight path] – those whom Allaah’s Messenger praised. Therefore, it is obligated on us to acquire knowledge for the sake of Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] and act upon it. Ignorance is a deadly disease and knowledge is a weapon that will destroy you if you do not act upon it, and Allaah’s refuge is sought.[Ref 13]
Al-Allaamah Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbaad [may Allaah preserve him] said: The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said:
Verily he lives long among you will see a lot of differing, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafaa ar-Rashideen [the rightly guided caliphs]. Adhere to it with your molar teeth (i.e. adhere to it firmly). And beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for every newly invented matter [in the religion] is a bidah [innovation in the religion], and every bidah is misguidance. [Abu Dawood. Number 4607] [Tirmidhee. Number 2676]
(Also) the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] has clarified – in the hadeeth about the 73 sects amongst whom 72 sects will enter the hell fire and one sect will be saved- that the saved sect are those who adhere to the path him and his noble companions adhered to. Imaam Maalik [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: “The latter part of this Ummah [i.e. those who will come after the Salaf] will not be rectified except by way of that which rectified it’s earlier part [i.e. the Salaf].’’ He also said, “Whoever initiates a religious innovation in Islaam and considers it to be something good, then indeed he has claimed that Muhammad has betrayed the Risaalah (i.e. the message he was entrusted with), because Allaah said: ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ – This day, I have perfected your religion for you]. Therefore, what was not part of the religion at that time [i.e. during the time of the Messenger] cannot be part of the religion today [i.e. after his departure from this world].” [Ref 14]
The Taa’ifatul Mansoorah – The Victories Group That Will Remain Until The End of The World
The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him], “There will not cease to be a group amongst my Ummah upon the truth; neither will they be harmed by those who betray them nor those who oppose them until the command of Allaah arrives [i.e. the day of judgement]”. [Bukhaari]
Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] says: This group will not cease to exist in the Ummah. The Ummah will not be deprived of this Sunni Group. This Taa’ifah can be one group. If it adheres to the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, it is the Taa’ifah Al-Mansoorah [The Victorious Group], even if it is only one. The Ummah will not lose this Sunni Group, this good group, and all praise be to Allaah – until the command of Allaah comes to pass [i.e. the day of judgment]. ‘They will not be harmed by those who forsake them’. Amongst the people are those who forsake them and those who oppose them, but they will not be harmed. This is from Allaah’s Grace upon His servants and that He will establish the truth for the one who aids the truth and call to it, even if evil is rife. There will be those who adhere to good, call to it and disseminate it amongst the people. Not all the Ummah will be misguided, but some will remain upon truth, but they might be strangers [i.e. their affair will be strange to the people], just as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Islam began as a strange thing and it will return as a strange thing, and glad tidings to the strangers”, so they said, ‘Who are the strangers O Messenger of Allaah? He said, ‘They are those who will be upright when the people become corrupt’.. and in another version of this hadeeth, “Those who rectify what the people have corrupted’. These are the strangers, because the majority of the people oppose them, belittle, forsake and keep away from what they are upon, but this will not harm them, “They will never be harmed by those who forsake them nor by those who oppose them’. Allaah will make them remain so that His Proofs remain amongst the creation until the end of time. This group might be in the East, the West, or the North etc…They are not in a specific place, but they are present. Whoever wants will find it. It is present and all praise is due to Allaah. All praise and thanks belongs to Allaah, we – at present – are upon a correct methodology, upon a sound methodology; our methodology is that which the Qur’aan and sunnah necessitate, our learning is based upon the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. We study explanation of the Qur’aan, the Prophetic narrations and their explanation, the sound creed of the pious predecessors and that which they were upon. All praise and thanks belong to Allaah at present we are upon a correct path, a sound methodology and straight path. We ask Allaah to keep us firm upon it until we meet Him, neither substituting nor changing it. [Ref 15]
Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee [may Allaah preserve him] says: It is obligated on the Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [i.e. the victorious group] – those whom Allaah’s Messenger gave glad tidings that they will remain [upon truth] and will be aided, neither harmed by those who betray them nor by those who oppose them till the end of time – to establish [sound] brotherhood for the sake of Allaah, co-operate upon righteousness and piety, roll up their sleeves and get to work, so that this great status is maintained, which is that they will be manifest upon the truth, neither harmed by those who forsake them nor by those who oppose them. And acquaintance with the truth cannot be [reached] except by way of the knowledge inherited from the Prophets and Messengers [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them], and from the seal of the Prophets [i.e. the Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)]. The scholars are the inheritors of the knowledge left behind by the Prophets in calling to the path of Allaah, (propagating) Allaah’s Message, enjoining good and forbidding evil. [Ref 16]
A Tremendous Supplication
[Ask Allaah to Let You Live Or Depart From This World As Long As That Is Good For You]
O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if You know that life is good for me, and let me die if You know that death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public; And I ask you (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger; And I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty; And I ask you for blessings that never ceases; And I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends; And I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; And I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquillity etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me); O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Eemaan, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). [Ref 17]
Beneficial Points From This Supplication
Regarding the statement:
O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if You know that life is good for me, and let me die if You know that death is good for me.
Commentary: This necessitates surrendering and submitting all of one’s affairs to the Lord- seeking from Allaah whatever is best for you in all circumstances and seeking that through His All-Encompassing Knowledge; for indeed Allaah knows all hidden and apparent affairs and He [alone has] All-Encompassing Power over everything; neither can anyone amend his Judgement nor repel His Decree. And what is well known is that the servant does not know the end results of affairs and its final abode; and in addition to this, he is unable to obtain good and repel harm, except through that which Allaah grants him assistance and makes easy for him, so the servant remains completely [and always] in need of Allaah wherever he may be. And this why one says in this supplication: [ أَحْيِنِي مَا عَلِمْتَ الْحَيَاةَ خَيْراً لِي وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا عَلِمْتَ الْوَفَاةَ خَيْراً لِي – Let me live if You know that life is good for me, and let me die if You know that death is good for me].
This is why the [authentic] Sunnah forbids one from desiring death due to harm that befalls him, because he is ignorant of the consequences which [death might bring upon him in the afterlife]. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Let none of you wish for death. If he is righteous, he might increase his good deeds. If he is sinful, he might repent”. [Bukhaari]
Regarding the statement:
O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public.
Commentary: That I fear you O Allaah in private and public; when I am with the people and when they are absent, for indeed there are people who fear Allaah in public and when seen, but the main and most important affair is to fear Allaah when not seen by the people. Indeed, Allaah praised those who fear him in the Ghayb. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ وَهُمْ مِنْ السَّاعَةِ مُشْفِقُونَ – Those who fear their Lord without seeing Him, while they are afraid of the Hour]. [Surah Al-Anbiyaa. Aayah 49]
Allaah [The Most High] said: [ مَنْ خَشِيَ الرَّحْمَنَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَجَاءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُنِيبٍ – Who feared the Most Beneficent (Allah) in the Ghaib (unseen): (i.e. in this worldly life before seeing and meeting Him), and brought a heart turned in repentance (to Him – and absolutely free from each and every kind of polytheism)]. [Surah Qaaf. Aayah 33]
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ كَلِمَةَ الْحَقِّ فِي الرِّضَا وَالْغَضَبِ
And I ask you (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger.
Meaning: Enable me to speak the truth in times of contentment and anger. Speaking truth in times of anger is a noble and mighty affair, for indeed anger leads a person to say that which is opposite of truth and something other than justice. Indeed, Allaah praised his servants – those who pardon when angered and their anger does not lead them to transgression and aggression. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَإِذَا مَا غَضِبُوا هُمْ يَغْفِرُونَ – And when they are angry, they forgive]. [Soorah Ash-Shooraa. Aayah 37]
The one who does not utter- in times of anger- except the truth, then indeed this is proof regarding his strong Eemaan and that he has control over his soul’s [desires]. In a hadeeth the Prophet said, “The strong one [i.e. the one who is more worthy to be described as a strong person] is not the one who [overcomes the people in] wrestling, rather the strong person is the one who restrains his himself when angry”.
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ الْقَصْدَ فِي الْغِنَى وَالْفَقْرِ
And I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty
Commentary: That I am balanced both when I am in a state of poverty and when I have wealth; upon the middle path ordained by the Islamic legislation- not miserly when I am poor and fearing that what I have will run out, nor being wasteful by placing upon myself that which I cannot bear, just as Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ يَدَكَ مَغْلُولَةً إِلَى عُنُقِكَ وَلاَ تَبْسُطْهَا كُلَّ الْبَسْطِ فَتَقْعُدَ مَلُومًا مَحْسُورًا – And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck, nor stretch it forth to its utmost reach (like a spendthrift), so that you become blameworthy and in severe poverty]- [Surah Al-Israa. Aayah 29]. And that if one is wealthy, his wealth does not lead him to extravagance and he exceeds the limits. Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا أَنفَقُوا لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ قَوَامًا – And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)]. [Surah Al-Furqaan. Aayah 67]
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ نَعِيماً لَا يَنْفَذُ
And I ask you for blessings that never ceases.
Commentary: Blessing that never ceases is the blessing of the Aakhirah, just as Allaah [The most high] said: [مَا عِنْدَكُمْ يَنفَدُ وَمَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ بَاقٍ – Whatever is with you, will be exhausted, and whatever with Allah will remain]. [Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 96] And Allaah [The Most High] said: [ إِنَّ هَذَا لَرِزْقُنَا مَا لَهُ مِنْ نَفَادٍ – (It will be said to them)! Verily, this is Our Provision which will never finish]. [Surah Saad. Aayah 54]
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ قُرَّةَ عَيْنٍ لَا تَنْقَطِعُ
And I ask You for the coolness of my eye that will never end.
Commentary: There are blessings that cease and those that do not cease. The coolness of one’s eye in the Dunyah is a portion of something and the happiness related to it will come to an end. In addition to this, [this coolness of the eye in the Dunyah] blemished with fear as a result of events that cause distress and suffering, as well as pain; therefore the eyes of the believer do not find a greater pleasure in anything of the Dunyah, except love of Allaah, remembrance of Allaah and obedience to Allaah, just as the Messenger said, “The coolness [pleasure or delight] of my eyes is in prayer”. Therefore, whoever acquires the pleasure of his eyes in this [i.e. love of Allaah and obedience to Him], then he has that which will not come to an end in the Dunyah, the Barsakh and the Aakhirah.
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ الرِّضِا بَعْدَ الْقَضَاءِ
And I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree.
Commentary: Asking Allaah to make you pleased after His decree has come to pass, because that would truly manifest the reality of being pleased with Allaah’s decree.
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ بَرْدَ الْعَيْشِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ
And I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquillity etc) after death.
Commentary: This shows that life, its [perfect] goodness and comfort only occurs after death, for indeed life before death is blemished with pain. And if there was no pain in this life other than death, then that would have been sufficient as pain, so how about the fact that life has numerous pains, grief, sicknesses, infirm old age, separation from beloved ones and other than that!
And regarding the statement:
وَأَسْأَلُكَ لَذَّةَ النَّظَرِ إِلَى وَجْهِكَ وَالشَّوْقَ إِلَى لِقَائِكَ فِي غَيْرِ ضَرَّاءَ مُضِرَّةٍ وَلَا فِتْنَةٍ مُضِلَّةٍ
And I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me).
Commentary: This section of the du’aa gathers the best of affairs in the Dunya and the Aakhirah – yearning to meet Allaah [in the Aakhirah whilst still living in this world] and seeing His Noble Face in the Afterlife [Free is He from all imperfections, co-equals, resemblance and partners]. And when it is the case that the complete accomplishment of this affair is based on safety from being harmed in this Dunya or being put to trial in one’s religious affairs, so one says: [فِي غَيْرِ ضَرَّاءَ مُضِرَّةٍ وَلَا فِتْنَةٍ مُضِلَّةٍ – without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me)].
The believer seeing his lord on the day of judgement is an affair that has been narrated in numerous texts in the Qur’aan and [authentic] Sunnah, and none denies it except one who has strayed from the straight path; rather it is the loftiest bliss for the people of Jannah and the greatest joy. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: When the people of Paradise would enter Paradise, Allaah [The Blessed and the Exalted] would ask: Do you wish Me to give you anything more? They would say: Have You not brightened our faces? Have You not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire? He [Allaah] would lift the veil, and of things given to them nothing would be dearer to them than looking at their Lord. [Saheeh Muslim 181] We ask Allaah for His bounty.
And finally, regarding the statement:
اللَّهُمَّ زَيِّنَّا بِزِينَةِ الْإِيمَانِ وِاجْعَلْنَا هُدَاةً مُهْتَدِينَ
O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Eemaan, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others).
Commentary: Beautification with Eemaan includes beautification of the heart with sound creed and noble deeds of the heart; beautification of the tongue with dhikr and recitation of the Qur’aan, enjoining good and forbidding evil and so forth; beautification of the limbs with righteous deeds and deeds that draws a person close to Allaah. [ وَاجْعَلْنَا هُدَاةً مُهْتَدِينَ – And make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others)]- Meaning: That we ourselves become guided and guiding others. This is the greatest status when a person knows the truth and follows it, teaches others and guides them. We ask Allaah to guide us to this and include us amongst those who are guided and guiding others. [Ref 18]
