[80] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Evil Scholars – Those Who Deliberately Oppose The Truth Due to Love of The Dunyaa] [PDF 2 Pages]

After mentioning some of those leaders of misguidance who knew the truth but deliberately opposed it, such as the likes of Ibn Arabi At-Taa’ee and An-Nabahaaniy -both of whom were callers to major Shirk, even though they knew the truth- Shaikh Rabee [hafidhahullaah] then said: These people are evil scholars who purchased with the Aayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allaah a little gain [i.e. the evil pleasures], just as Alaah [The Exalted] said:

فَخَلَفَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ وَرِثُوا الْكِتَابَ يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَٰذَا الْأَدْنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌ مِّثْلُهُ يَأْخُذُوهُ ۚ أَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِم مِّيثَاقُ الْكِتَابِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا مَا فِيهِ ۗ وَالدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Then after them succeeded an [evil] generation, which inherited the Book, but they chose [for themselves] the goods of this low life [evil pleasures of this world] saying [as an excuse]: ‘’[Everything] will be forgiven to us.’’ And if [again] the offer of the like [evil pleasures of this world] came their way, they would [again] seize them [would commit those sins]. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them that they would not say about Allah anything but the truth? And they have studied what is in it [the Book]. And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who are pious. Do not you then understand? [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 169]

The clear proof [regarding this affair] is that the worldly goals [i.e. evil pleasures, ambitions etc] comes in the way of person so he abandons the truth, speaks other than the truth, issues verdicts [or judges] based on other the truth and transmits that which is other than the truth, in order to reach [or attain] such worldly goals [or ambitions].

Then he says: ‘’I will be forgiven’’, whilst persisting upon falsehood. Then another worldly goal comes his way, so rushes towards it and says, “I will be forgiven.’’ This [type of behaviour is tantamount having] false hopes. Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] accepts the repentance of a person when he repents after sinning, but these people do not [establish] a sincere repentance; rather they have false hopes. This is the state of affairs of those who inherited the Book and do not act upon it. They say that which is other than the truth and prefer the Dunyaa over the Aakhirah. This is their state of affairs and description, and they have other characteristics that have been mentioned in the Book of Allaah and the [authentic] Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam].

We ask Allaah to place us amongst those who know and act; keep us away from love of the Dunyaa, [evil] desires and [love of] leadership, for indeed these affairs are a cause of destruction. We ask Allaah to keep us away from these causes of destruction and indeed our Lord hears the supplication [of those who supplicate to Him].

[79] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Knowledge Should Be Implemented And Allaah Is Not to Be Worshipped Based On Ignorance Or Desires]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

It has been reported in an authentic hadeeth -[in Saheeh Al Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim]- that: “A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire, then his intestines will spill forth in the Fire and he will go around it as a donkey goes around a millstone. The people of Hell will gather around him and will say: O So and so! What is the matter with you; did you not use to enjoin good and forbid evil? He will say: Yes, I used to enjoin good, but did not do it; and I used to forbid evil and did it [i.e. commit the evil I used to forbid. [Al-Bukhaari 3267 & Muslim 2989]

After quoting this Hadeeth, Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said: Indeed, there maybe someone who is worse than this man, for he [i.e. the one worse than the man mentioned in this Hadeeth] enjoins evil and forbids good, so what will be his state of affairs, and Allaah’s Refuge is sought?! Therefore, seeking knowledge should be for the sake of Allaah and also to act [upon it], otherwise knowledge will be a cause of evil upon [the seeker] and thus he’ll remain in two situations- either in a situation where one is afflicted with the disease of ignorance or in a state where one is not benefited by knowledge, rather it becomes harmful knowledge. The knowledge Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] brought is beneficial in and of itself, but if a person does not act [i.e. after acquiring it], it will be a cause of evil and harm for him and he might [also] harm others. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

And say [O Muhammad] “Do deeds! Allaah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you of what you used to do. [Surah At-tawbah. Aayah 105]

Act based on knowledge and know Allaah by His Perfect Names and Attributes -from Allaah’s Book [i.e. the Qur’aan] and the [authentic] Sunnah of His Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]. Worship Allaah based on that which the Messenger conveyed [i.e. the authentic Sunnah] and based on the texts of the Qur’aan. Neither worship Allaah based on ignorance nor desires, rather worship Allaah based on knowledge. That which is sought after from seeking knowledge is to act upon it, and acting cannot be [fulfilled] except after acquiring knowledge, just as Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] said:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ۗ

So know [O Muhammad] that Laa ilaaha ill-Allah [none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah], and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for [the sin of] believing men and believing women. [Surah Muhammad. Aayah 19]

Imaam Al-Bukhaari wrote a chapter based on this Aayah, saying: Chapter: “Knowledge precedes speech and action”,  because it is obligated on us to act based on knowledge and we are only to worship Allaah based on knowledge. We do not worship Allaah based on ignorance or desires.

The Main Goal Behind Warning Against Error – [By Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadee]

Shaikh Bin Haadee[hafidhahullaah] said: When you refute a person, it is obligated on you to adhere to truth, honesty & sincerity, so your intention should be to clarify the truth & warn against the error that is in opposition to the truth. If this is your intention, it is a noble intention [or goal] and a great affair, [for which] all the Ummah should thank you and it is not permissible for anyone to accuse you of evil. If you harbour evil goals and – by way of examinination and study – it becomes manifest that you are a person of desires, the people have the right to speak about you.

[75] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Why Are The Scholars Beneficial to Everyone -Humankind, Animals etc]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

And indeed everyone [i.e. in the heavens and on earth], and even the fish in the sea seek forgiveness for the scholar, because he benefits the people. Even the fish in the sea benefits from him; he clarifies [and distinguishes] between the halaal animals [that can be eaten] and [that which is] haraam, the manner to utilise a riding beast and how to deal with this animal [i.e. not to oppress or overburden it], and how to slaughter an animal properly [i.e. in conformity with the Sharee’aha]. So, love is placed in the souls of everyone – in the heavens and the earth – who is beloved to Allaah, so they seek forgiveness for the scholar.

You are a Miskeen [i.e. one in complete need of Allaah, weak, deficient etc] and Allaah [favoured] you with these hosts [i.e. the righteous inhabitants of the heavens and the earth] who supplicate for you and seek forgiveness for you, and the angels humble themselves to you. So, after knowing this, you should increase in humility, love of Allaah and eagerness for knowledge.

[74] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’-[Knowledge Is to Be Sought to Save Oneself First]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

O youth! It is obligated on you to [seek after this] inheritance – the inheritance [left behind by the] Prophets, for indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. [The Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam said)], “Whoever follows a path in the pursuit of knowledge, Allaah will make a path to Paradise easy for him. And indeed the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of being pleased with what he does [i.e. seeking knowledge].”

If you are sincere to Allaah, desiring His countenance by way of this knowledge and understanding in the religion, benefit and save yourself first, and thereafter you benefit the one to whom you can convey this good, guidance and understanding by way of this truthful intention, the path of paradise is made easy. The angels lower their wings out of humility and respect due to what you do [i.e. seeking knowledge], because the angels love Allaah and they love everything that is beloved to Allaah. Allaah loves knowledge, because it is this knowledge He taught and revealed to His Messengers in order to clarify that which will lead humankind to happiness in this life and the next, and keep them away from wtetchedness. This is something beloved to the angels, so they lower their wings for you due to being pleased with what you do [i.e. seeking knowledge].

[73] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm – [Travel to The Scholars to Learn and Seek (Sound) Understanding, Then Return to Benefit Your Family And Your Local Community]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Seek understanding first and foremost, go out and travel to the land of [sound] knowledge. If you are in the furthest region of the earth and you hear about a scholar in another region, then travel to obtain this good [i.e. sound knowledge and understanding]. Seek understanding of your religion and return to your people so that you become a means to their happiness and [a means] of saving them from ignorance and misguidance.

Indeed, during the era of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], the people used to travel from the furthest regions of the Arabian peninsula to him. The delegation of Abdul Qais [radiyallaahu anhum] travelled to the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and asked him questions, so he responded to them regarding the subject matter of Tawheed, the prayer and other than that.

Dimaam Bin Tha’labah Al-Hudhaliy [radiyallaahu anhu] travelled to him [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and asked him about Tawheed and the rulings [pertaining to acts of worship and other affairs], so he [sallal laahu alayhi wasallan] answered him.

Maalik Ibn Al-Huwayrith and a number of youths [radiyallaahu anhum] stayed for twenty nights and  [likewise other] people travelled from the furthest regions of the Arabian peninsula to the noble Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] to learn and seek understanding in the religion; thereafter, they returned to their people to warn and teach them. Maalik and the youth with him [radiyallaahu anhum] stayed with the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] for days, but when Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] realised that they were missing their families, he [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] – due to his kindness and mercy – said to them, “Return to your families and teach them. When the time of the prayer arrives, let one of you call the A’dhaan and the eldest of you leads the prayer, and perform the prayer in the manner you have seen me perform the prayer.” They returned to their people -who did not know how to perform the prayer- and  taught them how to perform the prayer.

[72] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [A Lofty Goal Behind Travelling to Seek Knowledge: (One Travels to Seek Knowledge From The Scholars And Return to Clarify The Path to Safety And Happiness For His People)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَائِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ

Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they [who are left behind] may get instructions in [Islamic] religion. [Surah At-tawbah. Aayah 122]

Firstly, one seeks knowledge and acquaints himself with it. He acquaints himself with the rights of Allaah, the rights of Allaah’s servants and seeks understanding; then secondly, [وَلِيُنذِرُوا قَوْمَهُم  – And that they may warn their people]. Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] said:

[إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ لَّكُم بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيد – He [Muhammad (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam)] is only a warner to you in face of a severe torment]- Meaning: The occurrence of the day of judgement (Ref1). A warner by way of [sound] knowledge; therefore, a person returns to his people [i.e. after seeking sound knowledge] to warn them about a severe punishment [i.e. about the occurrence of the day of judgement]. And how can they be acquainted with Allaah’s rights, the rights of humankind, the path to paradise and the path to leading to the hell fire, except by way of this [sound] knowledge and understanding. This is the path of safety and happiness.

[71] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [The Aim Behind Knowledge And There Should Be No Boasting]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

 وَمَا كَانَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا كَافَّةً ۚ فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَائِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ

And it is not (proper) for the believers to go out to fight (Jihad) all together. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may get instructions in (Islamic) religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware (of evil). [Surah At-tawbah’ A ayah 122]

Look [at this]! There is an aim [or goal] behind knowledge. The one who boasts to the people about knowledge will not be able to acquire it, [rather the goal behind knowledge] is to give warning to your people. You [should] seek knowledge for the sake of Allaah and sincerely. Therefore, your intention -after sincerity – should be to benefit the people. And those worthier – first and foremost – to be benefited are your close relatives and family. You owe them a right to be fulfilled before all the people.

[70] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [One Should Humble Himself For The Sake of Knowledge and The Truth, But Never Lower Yourself -Even In The Presence of The Greatest Person- For The Sake of The Dunyaa]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Seeking knowledge is a great affair, which Allaah – in the Qur’aan – exhorted [us to seek] and [likewise] Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] has exhorted [us to seek it]. Allaah informed [us] that Moosaa [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] travelled to seek knowledge, saying:

وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَاهُ لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا

And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his boy-servant: “I will not give up (travelling) until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travelling.” [Surah Al-Kahf. Aayah 60]

Once he [Moosaa (salayhis-salaam)] was in one of the gatherings of Banee Israa’eel, so a man asked him, “Is there anyone more knowledgeable than you?” He said, “No.” So, Allaah revealed to him, saying: “Certainly, my slave Khidr” [i.e. he is more knowledgeable than you in some affairs]. Allaah narrated this story in the Qur’aan and likewise Allaah’s Messenger [i.e. in the Sunnah]. He [i.e. Moosaa (alayhis salaam)] was spoken to directly by Allaah and revealed the Tawraat to him, which contained Hudaa [i.e. that which guides a person to Eemaan, truth and protects one from misguidance] and Noor [i.e. a guiding light in the midst of the darkness of ignorance, confusion, doubts, beliefs and deeds that appear to be truth but are falsehood in reality and evil desires], but when he knew that another person possessed knowledge of that which he does not possess, [Allaah informed us he (Moosaa) said]:

لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا

I will not give up (travelling) until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travelling.”

[Surah Al-Kahf. Aayah 60]

He went on foot – neither had a car nor a riding beast, nor a horse; [rather] he travelled on foot. Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said about him: [قَالَ ذَٲلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبۡغِ‌ۚ فَٱرۡتَدَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَارِهِمَا قَصَصً۬ا  – Musa (Moses) said: “That is what we have been seeking.” So, they went back retracing their footsteps]. [Surah Al-Kahf. Aayah 64].

[They did this (i.e. Moosaa and his boy servant went back to find Khidr)] for the sake of knowledge, for indeed none knows virtue except the one given virtue. None knows the virtue of knowledge, except those who are virtuous. If one humbles himself due to knowledge, this is honour. Do not lower yourself – even in the presence of the greatest person- for the sake of the Dunyaa, [rather] humble yourself, be well mannered and lower yourself for the sake of knowledge, because it is the loftiest thing, and by way of it, you will be raised in the sight of Allaah and the people. If you lower yourself to acquire knowledge, this can never be [considered] humiliation; [rather] it is humility, a proof of good manners, truthfulness in the path of seeking after knowledge and the truth.

[69]Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [There Should Be No Haughtiness, Rather The Proofs Must Be Followed Even If Found With Someone Younger Than You And Lesser In Knowledge]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

[One] must seek understanding of Allaah’s Book and the [authentic] Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] – based on the understanding of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the understanding of the pious predecessors – the Sahaabah and those who followed them exactly in faith. These affairs must be acquired, for whoever opposes anything of it [i.e. then persists upon error after clarification], he will be misguided and stray away [from the right path]. What a beautiful a statement of Ibn Taymiyyah I have read and was transmitted by Ibnul Qayyim! [Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said]: “Whoever opposes the proofs [i.e. the sound unambiguous proofs] will be misguided from the [right path], and there is no proof except that which the Messenger brought [i.e. the Book and the authentic Sunnah].

Our proof is the Qur’aan and the [authentic] Sunnah, and whoever is deprived of it- in any affair- will be misled [from what is correct]. This is a true statement and it is what the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the Sahaabah [radiyallaahu-anhum] have stated and followed aforetime whilst seeking understanding of the religion. A proof – in any affair related to the religion – is [to be based on]: ‘’Allaah said and Allaah’s Messenger said.’’ At present, there are affairs whose proofs reach a thousand in number, but you do not find them in the reference books of the people of misguidance. They have been misguided from the right path and deprived of numerous proofs!

The Ahnaaf [i.e. the Hanifees] state in their definitions related to Fiqh that it is of two types: The Fiqh al kabeer Wal Akbar. Fiqh al kabeer – according to them – is the Fiqh related to the Sharee’ah rulings and the subsidiary issues of the religion, and what is similar to that. This is a great affair! However, what is greater than it and must be acquired – and the people will not rejoice [with happiness] except by way of it – is the understanding of Tawheed and Eemaan. This is the greater Fiqh – Meaning: We seek understanding in our religion and understand the two types of Fiqh – the Fiqh Al-kabeer and the Fiqh Al-Akbar. The Fiqh Al-Akbar is the understanding of Tawheed and Eemaan, and the Fiqh Al-kabeer is the Fiqh by way of which we can distinguish between Halaal and Haraam, truth and falsehood. We derive it from the book of Allaah, the sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the understanding of our pious predecessors. We utilise their understanding to aid us [in our] understanding as well as what they left behind for us in the Arabic language, Usoolul Fiqh, Usoolul Hadeeth, the science by way of which Ahaadeeth are declared authentication or weak. All these affairs must be acquired by the students of knowledge and they cannot do without it.

The person who studies Fiqh and does not give importance to the proofs- does not distinguish between what is authentic and weak – will fall into very big mistakes, for he might worship Allaah based on a weak or fabricated hadeeth. Therefore, he must distinguish between authentic and weak hadeeth. Ahmad Ibn Ishaaq [rahimahullaah] – an Imaam of Fiqh and Hadeeth- said: ‘’The one who does not distinguish between authentic and weak hadeeth is not a scholar.’’ And why is that [the case]? Because he might worship Allaah, declare something halaal or haraam based on weak or fabricated Ahaadeeth, so he harms himself and the people. Whoever is deprived of proofs will be misled from the right path and this is a principle cited in every affair related to the religion. Therefore, it is obligated on you to acquire understanding of the religion based on the path of the pious predecessors.

When a Sahaabi [i.e. anyone amongst the companions of the Prophet] was asked a question, he would answer with an Aayah and a hadeeth, and never said, “My opinion [or view] is such and such.’’ He would never exit the text of the Sharee’ah in his answer, except if no evidence reaches him; then [in that case], he would strive to reach a verdict as that textual proof was with someone else [i.e. another person]; because this person did memorise something and that one memorised something else, and that third person missed something. So, he fears Allaah and strives to reach a verdict based on what his ability allows him and the text available to him, and then says: ‘’Allaah says and the Messenger says.’’ If he does not have [enough] proof, he strives to reach a verdict and says: ‘’This is my view. If I’m correct, it is from Allaah; but if I’m mistaken, it is from myself and Shaytaan.’’ This is what Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] and other than him used to say.

Whenever AbuBakr [radiyallaahu-anhu] was compelled due to a need [for some evidence] and he did not have a textual proof from Allaah [i.e. from the Qur’aan] or [based on] what the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said regarding such and such affair, -and likewise Umar [radiyallaahu-anhu] used to do the same- he asked someone younger than him and finds a hadeeth related to the affair from someone younger than him amongst the Sahaabah, and from the latter companions, such as Al-Mugheerah Ibn Shu’bah [radiyallaahu-anhu].

The entire life of a person is spent in seeking knowledge – from the cradle to the grave.  He does not feel proud to acquire truth from a young or older person, and he never rejects truth – whether it is stated by a Muslim or Unbeliever. His soul seeks after the truth, so if he finds a text from the Book of Allaah and the [authentic] Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam], then all praises and thanks be to Allaah; but if he does not have it and finds it with someone else, he accepts it. Ibn Hazm [rahimahullaah] said: It maybe that a person did memorise an Aayah and a hadeeth, then something occurs, but he forgets the Aayah and the hadeeth and is reminded by someone else. It is not possible for a person to establish or accomplish his religious and worldly affairs except by way of co-operating upon righteousness and piety. He does not become proud when something occurs whilst he has no proof or cannot recall a text he did memorise, or has forgotten, or does not have a statement from the Sahaabah and the Taabi’een, [rather] he asks someone else and does become haughty.
