[68] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Some People Have a Deficient Understanding of What Al-Fiqh Fid Deen Means]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The Comprehensive Sharee’ah Understanding of the [phrase] Al-Fiqh Fid Deen [Understanding In The Religion]: “Whoever Allaah wishes good for, He grants him understanding in the religion.” When this [phrase] ‘Understanding in the religion’ is stated amongst the people, they understand it to mean the books of Islamic jurisprudence [i.e. the books that discuss the rulings related to prayer, zakat, fasting, marriage etc]. This is a deficient understanding. Fiqh [understanding] – first and foremost – is the understanding of the [sound] creed and Tawheed [i.e. sound Islamic monotheism]. This is the highest level of Fiqh, because the nobility of knowledge is [determined based on the] nobility of its subject matter. The best and noblest subject matter is Tawheed, which teaches the people about the Attributes of their Lord and the perfection of His Attributes, [informs them, explains and reminds] them about His Oneness, to worship Him [alone] and sincerely establish the [entire] religion for His Sake.

Therefore, we seek understanding of Tawheed from Allaah’s Book [i.e. the Qur’aan], the [authentic] Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and from the understanding of our Salafus Saaleh [i.e. the Sahaabah, the Taab’een and the At-baa at-Taabi’een]. We seek understanding in all areas of [Sharee’ah] knowledge – understanding [related to what] is halaal and haraam, acts of worship, mutual dealings, [sound Islamic politics], economics and in every affair. All these affairs – and all praise and thanks be to Allaah – are extensively [found] within the [message] brought by Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam].

When Fiqh is mentioned, its intended [meaning includes] understanding of every affair that is connected to our religious and worldly affairs, and the foremost of them is the knowledge of Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism]. There is nothing that can do without the knowledge of Tawheed, [because] some people deeply preoccupy [themselves with other] sciences and subject matters, but he does not know this knowledge brought by the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], to such extent that you find many people who are well versed in language, Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy and the science of rhetoric; but – by Allaah – he does not know [the sound meaning] of ‘Laa ilaaha illal laah’ – the Islamic Monotheism, which Allaah sent all the Messengers with- the first and last of them. [Allaah said]: [وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ‌ۖ – And verily, We have sent among every Ummah [community, nation] a Messenger [saying]: “Worship Allah [Alone], and avoid [or keep away from] all false deities.” [Surah An-Nahl Aayah 36]

Every Messenger came with this [Message], until the advent of the seal of the Messengers Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], who resided in Makkah for ten years and called to Tawheed. Tawheed was the foremost aspect and basis of his call. The prayer – the second pillar of Islaam after the testimony of faith ‘Laa ilaaha illal laah – was not legislated until in the 10th year [of his Messengership], and the full details [related to] Zakat was not legislated until [after his migration to] Madeenah and all the other laws. This shows the importance of Tawheed, so how is it that many people who ascribe to Islaam- those who claim knowledge – are ignorant of it, then how about the ignorant people. And due to this, Misguidance, Bidah and grave worship has become widespread, and this arose due to ignorance regarding the [perfect] Names and Attributes of Allaah and negation of Allaah’s [perfect] Attributes. And [also] a people from the other religions entered into Islaam and plotted against the people [through] corrupt sciences – rhetoric, philosophy, forged [or spurious] historical accounts [or events] and what is similar to that, and thus corrupted their [sound] creed and methodology.

[67]Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [The Best Worship Is That Which Is Constant And Refrain From Imposing Upon Ourselves Extra Optional Acts of Worship Beyond What We Are Able to Do]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The most beloved worship to Allaah is that which is constant, for indeed the one who imposes upon himself that which is beyond his ability [i.e. extra supererogatory acts of worship] which he might not able to do, it is inevitable that his strength will disappear gradually, so he becomes weak or might even deviate, because he imposed upon himself that which is beyond what he can do [i.e. extra supererogatory acts of worship which he cannot do], deprived his [body] of its rights, his family and others. [Salmaan (radiyallaahu anhu) said to Abu Dardaa (radiyallaahu anhu)]: “Your Lord has rights on you, your ownself has a right on you, and your family has rights on you, so you should give the rights to all those who have a right on you.” [Bukhaari 1968]

Abdullaah Ibn Umar [radiyallaahu anhumaa] used to fast constantly without a break and completed recitation of the Qur’aan every night, so Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] clarified for him and said: “It is sufficient for you to fast for three days a month”, so he said, “I can do more than that.” The Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Your wife has a right on you, your guest has a right on you and your body has a right on you….so fast [in the manner that] Allaah’s Prophet Dawood used to fast” [i.e. alternative days] [Bukhaari 6134]

Therefore, balance worship [i.e. related to extra optional acts of worship based on one’s ability and prevents one from neglecting the rights his wife, body etc] preserves a person’s strength and enables him to be constant in worship.

[66] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Why Do The (Genuine or True) Scholars Fear Allaah More Than Everyone Else?!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ ۗ

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.
[Surah Faatir’ Aayah 28]

They are [truly] acquainted with the Greatness of Allaah and His Perfection [i.e. the Perfection of Allaah’s Lordship, Names and Attributes, Actions, Judgements, Commands, Prohibitions etc], His Rights and the rights of His slaves [i.e. the rights of mankind, Jinn and all other creatures]. They [truly] distinguish between halaal and haraam, between what is harmful and what is beneficial [i.e. what will benefit the people in their religious and worldly affairs & what will harm them]; so they have a much greater piety, fear of Allaah founded upon knowledge of Allaah’s Greatness, Perfect Sovereignty and Dominion, and being constantly aware of the fact that Allaah knows, hears and sees everything they conceal and proclaim.

As for the Jaahil, he is not [or not truly] acquainted with the Greatness of Allaah nor the rights of Allaah. How can he fear [or truly] fear Allaah when he is not [or not truly] acquianted with Allaah’s punishment and what is within the fire of hell, the Barsakh [i.e. the life after death and before the day of judgement], life in the grave and the severe anxiety people will encounter [i.e. due to one’s evil deeds].

[65] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’-[What Was The Most Virtuous Thing That Allaah Gave to The Prophets And Messengers After They Were Appointed As Prophets And Messengers?]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] said: We cannot be acquainted with the greatness of Allaah, His [Perfect and All-Encompassing] Power, His Perfection and His rights over His slaves, except through the path of the noble Messengers [alayhimus salaatu wassalaam]. The people can only [achieve true and sound] happiness through the [guidance, nurturing and path of the Prophets and Messengers], because Allaah favoured them with that light and guidance. And Allaah did not praise the Prophets for anything – after appointing them as Prophets and Messengers- more virtuous than knowledge. Allaah said:

And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibrahim (Abraham) against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing. [Surah Al-An’aam- Aayah 83]

[Through this] Knowledge of the proofs and evidences [i.e. the revelation], Allaah raised the status [of the people], and He raised the status of all the Prophets by way it.  Allaah said about Yusuf [alayhis salaam]:

وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ ۥۤ ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُ حُكۡمً۬ا وَعِلۡمً۬ا‌ۚ وَكَذَٲلِكَ نَجۡزِى ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

And when he [Yusuf (Joseph)] attained his full manhood, We gave him wisdom and knowledge (the Prophethood), thus We reward the Muhsinun (doers of good). [Surah Yoosuf’ Aayah 22]

Allaah granted him wisdom and Prophet-hood. Allaah granted him knowledge and praised him – this noble Prophet- due to Prophet-hood and knowledge.

Likewise, Allaah praised Moosaa [alayhis salaam], saying:

And when he attained his full strength, and was perfect (in manhood), We bestowed on him Hukman (Prophethood, right judgement of the affairs) and religious knowledge [of the religion of his forefathers i.e. Islamic Monotheism]. And thus do We reward the Muhsinun (i.e. good doers). [Surah Al-Qasas’ Aayah 14]

O my brothers! Look at how Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] praised His Prophets and Messengers, and specifically mentioned knowledge as one of their great and lofty qualities, because it is their most virtuous quality; rather it their best qualify after being appointed as Prophets and Messengers.

Allaah praised Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and granted him knowledge. Allaah said:

It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) hate (it). [Surah At-Tawbah’ Aayah 33]

Al-Hudaa [Guidance] is beneficial knowledge and Deenul Haqq [the religion of truth] is righteous action. And Allaah gave the Messenger superiority and likewise this Ummah over all religions by way of this Knowledge [i.e. the final revelation].

Allaah [The Blessed And Most High] said:

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Qur’an, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad). And verily, they had been before in manifest error. [Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayah 2]

Allaah praised the Messenger and the Ummah due the knowledge and wisdom [given to them]; purified them [from the filth of disbelief and polytheism] and saved them Misguidance by way of it. They used to be in a state of extreme darkness – [upon acts, beliefs, ideas and manners] of the Pre-Islamic era of ignorance and Misguidance, then Allaah saved them through Muhammad and the guidance he brought, and [though] the knowledge [of the revelation] that purifies the souls and hearts.

Allaah praised the [upright religious] scholars of this Islamic Nation and the [upright scholars of the previous Nations who followed Allaah’s Messengers] due to the knowledge [of the revelation that was given to them]. Allaah did not praise them due to wealth, worldly status, authority or anything else, rather Allaah praised them due to knowledge [of the revelation], because knowledge is that which passes judgement on all affairs of life, and it is what passes judgements on both the rulers and the subjects. Allaah said:

إِنَّمَا يَخۡشَى ٱللَّهَ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِ ٱلۡعُلَمَـٰٓؤُاْۗ

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.

[Surah Al-Faatir’ Aayah 28]

[64] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [Direct Your Attention Towards The Senior Scholars]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The students of knowledge must think carefully and should direct their attention towards the senior scholars – the possessors of vast knowledge, those whose lives have been spent in seeking knowledge and its dessimination, and are possessors of experience [in many affairs]. They will give you – in one sitting – that which you cannot attain in a year.

They will give you the [required and precise] summary of knowledge, which if you and your young Shaikh were to look for, you will not reach it. This [i.e. abandoning the scholars and their knowledge and clinging to the young ones] is also an obstacle faced by the students of knowledge, so one should beware of it.

Knowledge of The Young Ones

[63] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’- [Regarding The One Who Knows Little, Pretends to Be a Scholar And Distances The People From The Upright Scholars, And Followed By a More Detailed Clarification From Salafipublication Regarding The Term ‘Al-Asaaghir’]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

One of the obstacles that prevents people from [acquiring] knowledge is [when they] turn to the knowledge of the Asaaghir [the small ones] – and Allaah’s refuge is sought. And from the [minor] signs of the hour [i.e. the day of judgement] is that knowledge will be acquired from the young in age, who learn very little and thus considers himself an Aalim!

This person is young and a Miskeen [i.e. one lacking strength in the field of knowledge], but considers himself as one who has reached the highest level; so the ignoramuses come to him, gather around him and cut off from the scholars – and Allaah’s refuge is sought. This is one of the [minor] signs and portents of the hour, when the people abandon the senior scholars and embark upon acquiring knowledge from the ignorant young ones – those who pretend to be scholars. This is a calamity. Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] said: “The people will not cease to be upon good as long as they acquire knowledge from their elder, trustworthy ones and scholars.”

Contemplate on this statement, “And if they acquire knowledge from their young ones, they will be destroyed.”

This is one of the obstacles and barriers to acquiring knowledge. It may be that some people desire knowledge, but he [i.e. an individual] becomes deceived by that young person and considers him to be the most knowledgeable of people. And had he gone to other than that young person, he would find that it is obligated on that young person to seek knowledge together with him, and sit down in the presence of the scholars.

[62] Excepts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [A Similitude Regarding Those Who Abandoned Acting After Knowledge Came to Them]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The likeness of those who were entrusted with the [obligation of the] Taurat, but who subsequently failed in those [obligations], is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books [but understands nothing from them]. How bad is the example [or the likeness] of people who deny the Ayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are wrong-doers.

[Surah Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayah 5]

They [i.e. the corrupt scholars amongst Bani Israa’eel] abandoned acting upon the knowledge that was revealed to Moosaa [alayhis salaam], so Allaah likened them to a donkey carrying huge burdens of books. A donkey cannot distinguish whether something good or evil is on top of it – does not know whether it is carrying a living thing or books. Likewise, this is the likeness of the one who does not act.

It is incumbent upon us to establish the Salaah, give Zakaat, fast during the month of Ramadhaan and perform hajj [i.e. hajj obligated on those who can afford it] in the manner legislated by Allaah [i.e. based on the evidences found in Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wasallam), and not based on innovations in religion].

It is incumbent upon us to [hold onto] the sound creed in the manner Allaah legislated it for us; keeping away from Shirk, Bidah and all types of disobedience to Allaah. We should act upon what Allaah has taught us [i.e. knowledge found in the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah as understood by the Sahaabah].

We should believe in the sound creed, and [we should] fight against Shirk and all types of bidah [i.e. teach Tawheed, the authentic Sunnah and the path of the Sahaabah, and refute Shirk and Bidah], enjoin good and forbid evil. This is all considered to be part of acting upon [knowledge after acquiring it].

Your knowledge decreases depending on your shortcomings in any affair, and the rebuke a person receives will depend on [how much he has] abandoned that which Allaah has taught him [i.e. the knowledge he has acquired from the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah as understood by the Sahaabah].

[61] Excerpts From Shaikh Rabee’s Book Titled ‘Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm’ – [How Would We Purify Our Souls From The Hidden And Visible Impure Traits In The Absence of Acting Upon What We Have Learnt?!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

One of the obstacles to [acquiring] knowledge and the [causes] of the disappearance of knowledge is when you do not act upon what you have learnt. Therefore, O students of knowledge! It is incumbent upon us to act upon what we have learnt. Sound knowledge is that which purifies the souls, [so] how would you purify the soul if you do not act?!

How would you be cleansed from the blameworthy, impure hidden traits [in the heart and soul] and the evil traits that are visible, such as bad manners, arrogance, [blameworthy] envy, coveteousness and showoff, [if you do not act]? All these deeds occur as a result of not applying knowledge. [If] you possess knowledge of any affair, [then] knowledge urges you towards sincerity. Your Lord [The Blessed and Exalted] said:

وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءوَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ

And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allaah, and worship none but Him Alone, and perform the prayer and give Zakat; and that is the right religion. [Surah Al-Bayyinah’ Aayah 5]

How many times has Allaah censured the [scholars of the] Yahood and Nasaaraa because they do not act? You have heard a similitude that was given about a scholar amongst the scholars of Bani Israa’eel: “The likeness of those who were entrusted with the [obligation of the] Taurat, but who subsequently failed in those [obligations], is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books [but understands nothing from them]. How bad is the example [or the likeness] of people who deny the Ayaat [proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are wrong-doers. [Surah Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayah 5]

They acquired knowledge of the Tawraat but did not act upon it, so that led them to disbelief in Allaah. Had they acted upon what is in the Tawraat which was revealed to Moosaa [alayhis salaam], they would have believed in Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], but neither did they act upon what was in the Tawraat nor what was in the Injeel, nor what Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] came with, [rather] they belied him.

In The Name if Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
The obstacles to [sound] knowledge are present due to ignorance, bidah and Fitan. Fitan becomes rife whenever [sound] knowledge is little. Whenever [sound] knowledge is little, the arenas of Fitan expand, Fasaad and murder becomes rife, and every type of Fasaad becomes rife, such as Tabarruj and Zinaa. These affairs are also reasons and obstacles that prevent [people] from being thirsty for [sound] knowledge. One looks for [upright] scholars, but cannot find any in his country due to the [fact that] Fasaad and ignorance is rife.

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

That home of the Hereafter [i.e. Paradise], We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqoon [pious]. [Surah Al-Qasas’Aayah 83]
The home of the Hereafter is prepared for those who are humble for the sake of Allaah, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will raise him. [As for the haughty [people], Allaah hates them and their destination is the fire – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought.
Major Kufr and Bidah stops a person from [receiving] the delight [found in the] truth and guidance brought by the Prophets, and that which purifies the souls [i.e. makes the souls upright]. How many people have been deprived of seeking knowledge due to haughtiness [or pride] – this extremely despicable traite! [He says], “How can I seek knowledge from such and such person and he is not a scholar, and he is a Jaahil?”
[He says that the] scholars are ignoramuses and thinks that he is a scholar, even though he is an ignoramus, for indeed whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus, just as Ibn Mas’ood said, “Whoever considers himself a scholar is an ignoramus.”
