[11] Mischief and Mischief Makers In The Earth- [Arouse Public Sentiment In order to Conceal Truth, Misguide The Gullible And Maintain The Shirk Status quo]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

In Surah Yunus, Allaah [The Most High] informed us about Nuh [alayhis salaam] and the evil end of those who rejected his message of Tawheed; then Allaah [The Most High] informed us that He sent Messengers after Nuh [alayhis-salaam]; Allaah said:

Then after him We sent Messengers to their people, they brought them clear proofs, but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus We seal the hearts of the transgressors (those who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and disobey Him). [10:74]

Then Allaah [The Most High] informed us that He sent Moosaa and Haaroon [alayhimas-salaam] to Fir’awn and his people. Allaah [The Most High] said:

Then after them We sent Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) to Fir’aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). But they behaved arrogantly and were Mujrimun (criminals etc)

After the departure of the Messengers-those who were sent to the previous destroyed nations, Allaah sent Moosaa Ibn Imraan [alayhis-salaam]- a Messenger whom Allaah spoke to directly, a Messenger amongst the five Messengers of firm resolve, those taken as perfect examples to follow and to whom were revealed the great and comprehensive divine laws. Allaah [The Most High] also appointed Moosaa’s brother-Haaroon as a Messenger and Moosaa’s deputy, and sent both of them to Fir’awn and his chiefs – the senior people and leaders of Fir’awn’s Kingdom- because they were the ones followed by the common people.

Allaah gave Moosaa and Haaroon clear proofs- manifesting the fact that Allaah alone is the Lord of the entire creation, the possessor of Perfect Names and Attributes and the only deity worthy of worship; however Fir’awn and his chiefs turned away from those proofs wrongfully and arrogantly after being certain of the truth, because they were a people given to criminality. When the proofs came to them, they said that it was tantamount to manifest magic! Therefore, not only did they reject the truth; rather they also attributed it to magic -the falsest of falsehoods -whose reality is nothing else but concealment of truth. And because of this statement of theirs, Allaah [The Most High] said that Moosaa (alayhis-salaam) said to them:

قَالَ مُوسَىٰٓ أَتَقُولُونَ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَڪُمۡ‌ۖ أَسِحۡرٌ هَـٰذَا وَلَا يُفۡلِحُ ٱلسَّـٰحِرُونَ

Musa (Moses) said: “Say you (this) about the truth when it has come to you? Is this magic? But the magicians will never be successful.” [10:77]

A magician will never be successful- neither in this life nor in the afterlife. And indeed it has become manifest to everyone that Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] was the one who succeeded.

Then Allaah [The Most High] said that Fir’awn and his chiefs said:

قَالُوٓاْ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتَلۡفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا ٱلۡكِبۡرِيَآءُ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ

They said: “Have you come to us to turn us away from that (Faith) we found our fathers following, – and that you two may have greatness in the land? We are not going to believe you two!” [10:78]

They meant: Have you [O Moosaa] come to us to hinder us from what our forefathers were upon- the religion of shirk- and then command us to worship Allaah alone? So they argued in this manner and used their misguided forefathers as proof by way of which they rejected what Moosaa brought to them. They also said that both Moosaa and Haaroon only came to them with the message of Tawheed because they desired leadership and to expel them from their land! Fir’awn and his chiefs made this claim in order to conceal the truth, spread propaganda amongst their ignorant people, incite [enmity in the hearts of the people] against Moosaa and prevent them from believing in him.

Indeed, the one who is acquainted with the reality knows that this argument of theirs is neither a proof nor a distinction between truth and falsehood- because proofs cannot be nullified except with stronger proofs and evidences. The one who presents the truth and is rejected through the likes of these arguments [uttered by Fir’awn and his chiefs] has indeed established the fact that his opponent is unable to produce a robust refutation; for if his opponent had any clear proofs he would have presented them and would not merely say that he intends or wants such and such- regardless whether this claim is right or wrong. On the other hand, everyone who is acquainted with Moosaa’s [alayhis-salaam] state of affairs and what he conveyed knows that his intention was not to become exalted in the land; rather his intention – and that of his brothers amongst the Messengers of Allaah -was to guide the people and direct them to what will benefit them in this life and the hereafter. However, the behaviour of Fir’awn and his chiefs cannot be described in any other way other than what Allaah has stated that they said: [وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ – We are not going to believe you two!].

This rejection of theirs was due to  pride and obstinacy, but neither because what Moosaa and Haaroon conveyed was false nor ambiguous; rather they rejected what Moosaa and Haaroon conveyed due to arrogance and transgression- a desire to be exalted, which they sought to falsely accuse Moosaa and Haaroon of.

[10] Mischief and Mischief Makers In The Earth- [Perpetrator of Kufr Portrays Himself As The Victim]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] informs us in Surah Al-A’raaf Aayaat 123-126 that when the sorcerers abandoned their misguidance and accepted Moosaa’s [alayhis-salaam] message, Fir’awn said to them: [ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُم – You have believed in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission]: Meaning, Fir’awn- the cruel and opinionated judge- considered himself as the only one deserving of passing judgements on the statements of the people and in the assemblies. It was established by him and accepted by his people that he was the one to be followed and no one was allowed to oppose his judgements and statements. Therefore, contradicting his judgements and statements is tantamount to bad behaviour and disrespect.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says that Firawn said:

[إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَمَكۡرٌ۬ مَّكَرۡتُمُوهُ فِى ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ لِتُخۡرِجُواْ مِنۡہَآ أَهۡلَهَا‌ۖ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ – Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know]: Meaning, Fir’awn claimed that Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] is the elder (or leader) of the sorcerers who taught them sorcery and the sorcerers secretly allowed him to be victorious, so that the majority of people will follow them. This is an outright lie and Fir’awn was absolutely certain of it! Indeed, Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] never sought the support of the sorcerers; rather it was Fir’awn who sent his followers to the various cities of Egypt to gather the sorcerers to champion his cause. As for Moosaa [alayhis-salaam], he came with clear signs from Allaah [The Most High] whereas the sorcerers brought sorcery in order to defeat him, but their plot failed and the truth Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] brought became manifest to them, so they followed him.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says that Firawn said to those who repented from sorcery and believed in Moosaa: [لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفٍ۬ ثُمَّ لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ -Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all]: Meaning, Fir’awn- the cruel one- claimed that those who abandoned his way and followed the path of Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] were guilty of causing corruption in the earth and that he will deal with them in that manner in which such people deserve to be dealt with.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says that those who repented from sorcery and followed Moosaa [alayhis-salaam] replied to Fir’awn, saying: [إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ – Verily, we are returning to our Lord!] [وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّآ إِلَّآ أَنۡ ءَامَنَّا بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَآءَتۡنَا‌ۚ رَبَّنَآ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَيۡنَا صَبۡرً۬ا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسۡلِمِي – And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims].

[8] Mischief and Mischief Makers in The Earth- [Persistent Blame-shifting]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And indeed We punished the people of Fir’aun (Pharaoh) with years of drought and shortness of fruits (crops, etc.), that they might remember (take heed). But whenever good came to them, they said: “Ours is this.” And if evil afflicted them, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Musa (Moses) and those with him. Be informed! Verily, their evil omens are with Allah but most of them know not. [Surah Al-A’raaf. 130-131]

[وَلَقَدۡ أَخَذۡنَآ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِٱلسِّنِينَ  – And indeed We punished the people of Fir’aun (Pharaoh) with years of famine]; Meaning: Afflictions and drought for a long time; [وَنَقۡصٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٲتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَذَّڪَّرُونَ – and shortness of fruits (crops, etc.), that they might remember (take heed)]; Meaning: They were afflicted in order for them to realise that what befell them was a punishment from Allaah and so that they might abandon their disbelief. However, neither was this admonition useful to them nor did it benefit them, rather they persisted in transgression and corruption.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says: [فَإِذَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَسَنَةُ قَالُواْ لَنَا هَـٰذِهِۦ‌ۖ  -But whenever good came to them, they said: “Ours is this]; Meaning: When the land became fertile and provision was in abundance, they said, “We deserve this” and they did not thank Allaah.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says: [  وَإِن تُصِبۡہُمۡ سَيِّئَةٌ۬ يَطَّيَّرُواْ بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ – And if evil afflicted them, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Musa (Moses) and those with him]; Meaning: When the afflictions and drought reappeared, they said, “This came to us due to the presence of Moosaa and those who follow him”.

Then Allaah  [The Most High] says: [أَلَآ إِنَّمَا طَـٰٓٮِٕرُهُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَڪۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ – Be informed! Verily, their evil omens are with Allah but most of them know not]; Meaning: The afflictions reappeared by the divine will and decree of Allaah and not what you think; rather your sins and disbelief is the reason that brought about these afflictions.

[7] Mischief and Mischief Makers In The Earth – [The End Result When They Become Well Establish In Plotting, Deception And Transgression, And Think That They Are Invincible]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah (The Most High) said:

[أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ – Did you (O Muhammad) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad (people)?]; [إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلۡعِمَادِ -Who were very tall like lofty pillars]; [ٱلَّتِى لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا فِى ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ- The like of which were not created in the land?]; [وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُواْ ٱلصَّخۡرَ بِٱلۡوَادِ – And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?]; [وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِى ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ -And (with) Fir’aun (Pharaoh), who had the stakes; ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوۡاْ فِى ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ -Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah); فَأَكۡثَرُواْ فِيہَا ٱلۡفَسَادَ – And made therein much mischief; فَصَبَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّكَ سَوۡطَ عَذَابٍ – So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment;إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلۡمِرۡصَادِ  – Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them)] [Soorah Al-Fajr Aayaat 6-14]

Reminder On The Above Aayaat

[أَلَمۡ تَرَ -Did you (O Muhammad) not see]; Meaning: With your heart and insight, how those tyrannical nations were dealt with- the (people of) Iram, the well-known tribe in Yemen.  [ذَاتِ ٱلۡعِمَاد -Who were very tall like lofty pillars]; Meaning: They had great strength, insolent and proud. [ٱلَّتِى لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا -The like of which were not created]; Meaning: None was similar to Aad in strength; [فِى ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ – In the land]; Meaning: In all the lands (due to what they possessed of power and strength), just as Allaah [The Most High] says that their Prophet Hud (alayhis-salaam) said to them: [وَٱذۡڪُرُوٓاْ إِذۡ جَعَلَكُمۡ خُلَفَآءَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ قَوۡمِ نُوحٍ۬ وَزَادَكُمۡ فِى ٱلۡخَلۡقِ بَصۜۡطَةً۬‌ۖ فَٱذۡڪُرُوٓاْ ءَالَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ -And remember that He made you successors after the people of Nuh (Noah), and increased you amply in stature. So remember the graces (bestowed upon you) from Allah, so that you may be successful] [Al-A’raaf: Ayah 70]

[وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُواْ ٱلصَّخۡرَ بِٱلۡوَاد – And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)]; Meaning: Valley towns, which they hewed out of solid rocks with their strength and took them as dwelling places.

[وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِى ٱلۡأَوۡتَاد – And (with) Fir’aun (Pharaoh), who had the stakes]; Meaning: He had hosts that established his authority, in a manner similar to how stakes firmly hold something (on the ground). [ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوۡاْ فِى ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ – Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah)]; Meaning: Aad, Thamood, Fir’awn and those who followed them because they transgressed in Allaah’s earth and harmed the slaves of Allaah in their religious and worldly affairs.  And because of this Allaah (The Most High) said: [فَأَكۡثَرُواْ فِيہَا ٱلۡفَسَاد  – And made therein much mischief]; Meaning: Disbelief (in Allaah and His Messengers); spreading all types of disobedience (in the land); hastening to wage war against the Messengers and hindering mankind from the path of Allaah.

So when they reached that state of haughtiness deserving of destruction, Allaah sent them His punishment -different kinds of severe torment. [إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلۡمِرۡصَادِ   – Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful]; Meaning: Ever watchful over the one who disobeys Him.  Allaah gives him respite for a little while, and then seizes him with a mighty and powerful seizure.

A Warning Against Transgression, Boasting And Haughtiness!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abu Bakra [radiyallaahu anhu] reported that the Prophet [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, “There is no wrong action more likely to bring punishment in this world in addition to what is stored up in the next life than oppression and severing ties of kinship.” [Ref 1]

Iyaad Bin Himaar Al-Mujaashi’ee [radiyallaahu anhu] reported that the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “It has been revealed to me that you be humble so that none behave haughtily towards another person nor transgress against anyone”. [Ref 2]

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [rahimahullaah] said: This great hadeeth is from the Jawaami Al-Kalim [i.e. a short statement that contains a vast meaning]. In this hadeeth, the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi Wasallam] guides us to humbleness, whose opposite is haughtiness, transgression, belittling the people and mocking at them. As for the humble person, he that one who has Islamic manners and deals with his Muslim brothers based on Islamic brotherhood- neither transgresses against them nor mocks at them; neither belittles their rights nor treats them in an evil manner through speech or action. You always see him forgoing his rights out of humility to Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted].

The heart is the place where humility resides and it manifests on the limbs through good speech, good deeds and good dealings with others, and thus a person earns abundant reward. When a Muslim possesses this quality and refrains from exalting himself above the people, then indeed he fights against its opposites, such as belittling others, looking down on the people, treating them in an evil manner through speech and action, and other than that; rather he establishes the rights of brotherhood based on Eemaan just as Islaam calls to this great quality.

This hadeeth guides one to abandon transgression and to be humble. It is [not  permissible for] anyone to transgress against another person- neither through speech nor deeds- meaning: Do not transgress against him and thus oppress him. Do not [violate] his honour, blood and wealth, and through this brotherhood based on Eemaan is established, the Muslim actualises this great quality and thus Allaah raises his status. [Ref 2.1]

Abu Hurairah [radiyallaahu-anhu]  reported that Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Verily, my nation will be afflicted by the disease of nations.” They said, “O Allaah’s Messenger! What is the disease of nations?” The Prophet said, “Insolence, hubris, turning their backs to one another, competing for worldly things, hating each other and miserliness, until there will be oppression and then there will be bloodshed.” [Ref 3]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said:

Allaah forbade the two types of raising oneself above the people and they are: boasting and transgression, because when one raises himself through something that is true, then indeed he has boasted and if not based on truth then he has transgressed. Both these two behaviours are not permissible”. [Ref 4]

Muhammad Bin Ka’b Al-Quradhee [rahimahullaah] said, “Whoever is involved in three affairs, he will be haunted by it: transgression, breaking a pledge and plotting”, then he recited:

[وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ – But the evil plot encompasses only him who makes it]. [Soorah Faatir: Ayah: 43]

O mankind! Your rebellion (disobedience to Allah) is only against your ownselves].[Soorah Yoonus: Ayah: 23]

Then whosoever breaks his pledge only breaks it to his own harm]. [Soorah Al-Fath: Ayah: 10] [Ref 5]

[5] Mischief and Mischief Makers In The Earth– [The Nine Wicked Plotters Who Sought to Murder Prophet Saaleh and His Family]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] stated concerning those who disbelieved in His Messenger Saaleh [alayhis-salaam]:

And there were in the city nine men (from the sons of their chiefs), who made mischief in the land, and would not reform. They said: “Swear one to another by Allah that we shall make a secret night attack on him and his household, and afterwards we will surely say to his near relatives: ‘We witnessed not the destruction of his household, and verily! We are telling the truth. So they plotted a plot, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not.  Then see how was the end of their plot! Verily! We destroyed them and their nation, all together. These are their houses in utter ruin, for they did wrong. Verily, in this is indeed an Ayah (a lesson or a sign) for people who know. And We saved those who believed, and used to fear Allah, and keep their duty to Him. [27:48-53]

In the city where Saaleh (lived) amongst his people, there were nine men whom Allaah described as mischief makers in the land. They neither had any (good) intention nor deeds of righteousness; rather they were prepared to manifest enmity towards Saaleh (alayhis-salaam) – spoke ill of his religion (of Tawheed and uprightness) and called their people to this enmity of theirs. [Ref 1] They used to shed blood, commit theft and violate the honour of women. They were also the ones who hamstrung the she-camel. [Ref 2]

Allaah (The Most High) informed us that Saaleh (alayhis-salaam) advised his people, saying:

فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓاْ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

ٱلَّذِينَ يُفۡسِدُونَ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا يُصۡلِحُونَ

So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners]; Who make mischief in the land, and reform not. [26:150-152]

However, they did not cease to be upon this evil state of affairs until their enmity towards Saaleh (alayhis-salaam) led them to make an oath to one another that they will approach him and his family at night and murder them.  They also agreed that when they are confronted by Saaleh’s (alayhis-salaam) near relatives with the claim that they killed him, they will reject the claim and make an oath that they were truthful. So they plotted to murder Allaah’s Prophet Saaleh (alayhis-salaam) and Allaah also planned, but Allaah saved Saaleh (alayhis-salaam) and destroyed his disbelieving people.  Indeed, they never fulfilled their goal and plot.

This is the reality of the end result; so ponder upon the way in which Allaah (The Most High) deals with His Friends and His enemies! The end result of oppression will always be devastation and destruction, and the end result of Eemaan and justice will always be safety and success.

Allaah saved those who believed in Him, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the last Day and in His pre-decree (its good and it bad)—and they were also those who refrained from shirk and disobedience, and they obeyed Allaah and His Messengers. [Ref 3]

[4] Mischief and Mischief Makers In The Earth – [Those Who Utilise Wealth And Power to Pursue Goals Other Than The Ones Beloved to Allaah]

Allaah (The Most high) said:

Verily, Qarun (Korah) was of Musa’s (Moses) people, but he behaved arrogantly towards them. And We gave him of the treasures, that of which the keys would have been a burden to a body of strong men. When his people said to him: “Do not be glad (with ungratefulness to Allah’s Favours). Verily! Allah likes not those who are glad (with ungratefulness to Allah’s Favours).

But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and do good as Allah has been good to you, [وَلَا تَبۡغِ ٱلۡفَسَادَ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۖ – and seek not mischief in the land]- meaning: through pride, disobedience (to Allaah), preoccupying yourself with the blessings (bestowed upon you by Allaah) at the expense of (obedience to Allaah, being thankful etc) [Ref 1]; [إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ -. Verily, Allah likes not the Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts).

He said: “This has been given to me only because of knowledge I possess.” Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations, men who were stronger than him in might and greater in the amount (of riches) they had collected. But the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) will not be questioned of their sins (because Allah knows them well, so they will be punished without account).

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [hafidhahullaah] said:

They (i.e. the people) rebuke him (i.e. Qaaroon) because he did not want to spend from his wealth based on what Allaah has commanded, so Allaah said that he said: [إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ عِندِىٓ‌ۚ  – This (i.e. vast wealth) has been given to me only because of knowledge I possess. [Surah Al-Qasas’ Aayah 78]

Likewise, Allaah said: [وَإِذَآ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِ – And when We bestow Our Grace on man (the disbeliever), he turns away and becomes arrogant, far away from the Right Path. [Surah Al-Israa’ Aayah 83]

[Allaah said]: [ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلۡنَـٰهُ نِعۡمَةً۬ مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭ‌ۚ بَلۡ هِىَ فِتۡنَةٌ۬ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ  – Then when We have (rescued him from that harm and) changed it into a favour from Us, he says: “Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it.” Nay, it is only a trial, but most of them know not! [Surah Az-Zumar’ Aayah 49]

Allaah said that he [i.e. the ungrateful human being says after being rescued from hardship]: [قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ ۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭ‌ۚ  – he says: “Only because of knowledge (that I possess) I obtained it]; but Allaah said: [ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ – Nay, it is only a trial, but most of them know not!]

These sciences (i.e. worldly sciences) become a trial and tribulation if they are not placed below (or regulated by) the knowledge which Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] brought. [Ref 2]

So he went forth before his people in his pomp. Those who were desirous of the life of the world, said: “Ah, would that we had the like of what Qarun (Korah) has been given? Verily! He is the owner of a great fortune.”

But those who had been given (religious) knowledge said: “Woe to you! The Reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is better for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and this none shall attain except those who are patient (in following the truth).”

So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling place. Then he had no group or party to help him against Allah, nor was he one of those who could save themselves.

And those who had desired (for a position like) his position the day before, began to say: “Know you not that it is Allah Who enlarges the provision or restricts it to whomsoever He pleases of His slaves. Had it not been that Allah was Gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us up (also)! Know you not that the disbelievers will never be successful.

That home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqun [28:76-83]

Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] said: “The home of the Hereafter is prepared for those who are humble for the sake of Allaah, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will raise him. As for the haughty, Allaah hates them and their destination is the fire – and Allaah’s Refuge is sought. Major Kufr and Bidah stops a person from (receiving) the pleasure that is (found) in the truth and guidance brought by the Prophets, and that which purifies the souls. [Ref 3]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

Allaah brought the servant out of his mother’s womb whilst he knew nothing, not able to do anything and owned nothing; neither able to give nor take; neither able to harm nor benefit. This state of neediness until he reached a more perfect state is something witnessed and tangible for everyone [to see], and i is well known that this is the very essence of the human being and he remains upon that state. He does not move from this state and enters into a state of Lordship – a state in which he becomes absolutely self-sufficient and not need of anyone and anything; rather he does not cease being a slave, a needy one to his Rabb [Allaah the Creator, All-Provider and the Only One Who Controls and Sustains Everything] and His Faatir [Allaah, The Originator and Creator of Everything].

However, after the human being was granted blessings, shown mercy, granted the means to reach a more perfect state, and Allaah -out of His Perfect Kindness and Generosity- granted him  apparent blessings [i.e. to recognise the Messengers who were sent with Islamic Monotheism, granted him the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.] and the hidden blessings [i.e. granted him the  innate disposition to recognise his Lord when the Messenger calls him to Eemaan, and granted him knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc.], granted  him hearing, sight and a heart, and taught him [i.e. gave him the means to knowledge], granted him ability, subjugated things to him, granted him [the desire and enthusiasm to pursue what is beneficial, and take action], enabled him to receive the service of those of his kind [i.e. gave him authority over other humans], subjugated to him horses and camels, gave him the ability to capture the animals in the sea, drop birds from the sky, subjugate wild animals, dig wells [irrigate water etc], plant trees, dig the earth, learn how to build, acquire the things that are of benefit to him, guard against and protect himself from that which is harmful to him; then the Miskeen [i.e. this absolutely poor, dependent human being] thinks that he has a share of authority and claims – for himself – a kingship [or authority] similar to that of Allaah [Glorified be Allaah and free is Allaah from all imperfections, partners, coequals, similarities etc], and begins to see himself in a manner other than what he was at first, forgets his [prior] state of non-existence, poverty and neediness, until he becomes as if he was not that poor and needy thing. [Ref 4]

Population Growth

According to scientists, another cause of poverty is population growth in countries that cannot afford to feed the extra mouths. Most rich countries have a stable population with roughly as much babies born as people dying. However, in poor countries, the populations seem to be increasing. Muslims, as rule, are not allowed to use contraception due to fear of not being able to provide for their children – they learn from the Quran that Allah will enrich them from Himself from ways and means that He provides. Population control measures are not from the Islamically legislated means to remove poverty – this is proven by the fact that there is sufficient food and resources in the world to feed the poor many times over daily! Added to that is the reality that large populations are a tremendous resource for a nation. Countries with large populations are quite often the wealthiest, and have the fastest growing economies. Note: In certain situations contraception is permitted and I have discussed that elsewhere. https://www.abukhadeejah.com/birth-control-using-contraception-gaps-between-children/

Islam teaches that poor people must be helped with education, skills, charity, better infrastructure and better health care. In this way the poor are not neglected and the wealth of the rich is purified in the sight of Allāh through the giving of charity. People have large families because the family unit helps each other and they care for their elders. Death of young children is much higher in poorer countries due to sicknesses and disease. So the Muslims have a duty to help the poor, even if they are non-Muslims. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Give charity to people of other Religions.” (Shaikh Al-Albānī said it was an authentic Hadīth, in As-Saheehah).

The figures that relate to the rate of death in children is called the infant mortality rate. In Somalia, 192 children die out of a 1000 that are born. In Mali, 199 children die out of a 1000 that are born. In Britain, 6 children die out of a 1000 that are born. Aid is to help or assist people in need – a very important aspect of Islam. People usually do this by donating directly to poor people, or through Zakat to Muslim governments or to recognised charities.

Economic Reasons:

The way that countries buy and sell with each other does not always help people in poor countries. Producers of crops like wheat and rice will usually sell to the country that will pay them the most for it, so poor countries cannot compete and therefore cannot buy crops to feed their people. So these poor people have to grow their own crops to feed themselves. In many poor countries the rich farmers grow cash crops such as fruit and flowers that they sell to rich countries and their profit often does not help the poor people. So the Muslim is always encouraged to give aid to those less fortunate, so that no one in the land remains hungry, unclothed or unsheltered. Islam has no problem with people becoming wealthy so long as the poor not are neglected; they must be taken care of, helped, educated and empowered to look after themselves. Wealthier Muslims are obligated to give in charity (zakāt) every year, and each Ramadān (zakāt al-fitr). The Two Basis of Extreme Corruption In Society – [By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

Everyone with a bit of (sound) intellect knows that the corruption of the world and its ruin occurs due to giving precedence to opinion over the divine revelation and (evil) desires over sound intellect. These two corrupt motives are not entrenched in a heart except that its destruction becomes inevitable nor in a nation except that its affairs are completely corrupted. [Ref 1]

He [rahimahullaah] also stated: It has been stated that the reason behind Iblees being distanced [from the mercy of Allaah] is because of false interpretation, for indeed he made an analogy with the text and gave precedence to the analogy over the text. He made a false interpretation about himself and that  [his so called] rational analogy takes precedence over the command to prostrate. [Allaah informed us that Iblees said]: [أنا خير منه – I am better than him [i.e. Aadam], and that a virtuous one cannot humble himself to one who has been given virtue over him; therefore he quickly said [as Allaah informed us that Iblees said]: [خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طين – You created me from fire, and him you created from clay].

Therefore, he thought that this rational analogy that resembles truth- even though it is false – will benefit him in his false interpretation. So, that which happened him happened and he became the leader of everyone- until the day of judgement- who makes a false interpretation of the texts of the revelation. How many a person in this world are followers of this cursed leader! And if you contemplate on the majority of those doubts that are made to resemble the truth by the false interpreters of the texts and seeking to nullify them, you will find that it is similar to the doubts of Iblees which he seeks to portray as truth.

So, a person says: If the intellect and the text oppose each other, then give precedence to the intellect. This is where this principle is derived from and he [i.e. the proponent of this affair] use it as a fundamental principle through which he rejects those texts of the revelation which he claims are in opposition to the intellect, just as his leader Iblees claimed that a [so called] rational proof opposed the command to make sujood. This doubt came to him due to pride which prevented him from submitting to the clear texts of the revelation. Likewise, you find every false disputer against the texts of the revelation does so due to pride. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ ۙ إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَالِغِيهِ ۚ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ

Verily, those who dispute about the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride [to accept you (Muhammad ) as a Messenger of Allah and to obey you]. They will never have it (i.e. Prophethood which Allah has bestowed upon you). So seek refuge in Allah (O Muhammad from the arrogants). Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 56] [Ref 2]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said:

And even though there is something in the paths of analogical reasoning and reflection that will lead to knowledge, however sometimes it cannot give detail explanation in a dispute between the people of the earth due to the minute details and ambiguities [in that dispute], and at other times due to the fact the people differ when prioritising necessities. Therefore, due to this Allaah [The Most High] commanded [us] to return to the revelation in times of dispute. Allaah [The Most High] said: [ كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً۬ وَٲحِدَةً۬ فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَأَنزَلَ مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِيَحۡكُمَ بَيۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فِيمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُواْ فِيهِ‌ۚ -Mankind were one community (i.e. upon Tawheed and Allaah’s Sharee’ah) and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed]. [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 213] Therefore, Allaah [The Most High] designated the revealed Books [i.e. the Qur’aan being the final of them] as the judge between the people in matters wherein they differ. [Ref 3]

If you say that the intellect is to be given precedence over the revelation, then which intellect should we follow? Are the intellects of the people combined in the intellect of one man or do they differ? There are intellects of the philosophers, the atheists, the heretics, the people of evil desires and those who confound truth with falsehood; and due to this one of the Salaf said, “Had the desires been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”; therefore, we say, “Had the intellects been one, it would have been considered to be the [basis of] truth”. [Ref 4]

Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [hafidhahullaah] stated:

The wisdom of the Islamic Shariah: Cut off evils and harms to society from their very roots and enjoy the resulting freedom, ease and wholesome life. In contrast: the barbarity and backwardness of commercialising corrosive evils– usurious banking, alcohol, gambling–in order to profit from the masses through affairs in which their ruin and impoverishment lies–and then managing this commercialisation through legislation, policies, guidelines and so on to “limit the harms”. The result? Inescapable enslavement, bondage, disease and ruin of the masses for the enrichment of the few who peddle these vices. Where is the intellect?! [Ref 5]

Those Before Them – (Namrood, Bakhtanasar, Fir’awn And Their Ilk) – Plotted, But Allaah Struck at The Foundation of Their Building: [Allaah’s Warning to Plotters From All Different Walks of Life Until The Day of Judgement]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Quote

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Those before them indeed plotted, but Allah struck at the foundation of their building, and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them, and the torment overtook them from directions they did not perceive. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace them and will say: “Where are My (so called) ‘partners’ concerning whom you used to disagree and dispute (with the believers, by defying and disobeying Allah)?” Those who have been given the knowledge (about the Torment of Allah for the disbelievers) will say: “Verily! Disgrace this Day and misery are upon the disbelievers. [Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 26-27]

[قَدۡ مَڪَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ   – Those before them indeed plotted]: The Mufassiroon say that this refers to Namrood who built a tall tower in order to climb – as he claimed – the heavens and fight its inhabitants.

[فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنۡيَـٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَيۡہِمُ ٱلسَّقۡفُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ  – but Allah struck at the foundation of their building, and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them]: The Mufassiroon say: Allaah sent a wind which flung the top of the tower to the sea and the rest was destroyed. [وَأَتَٮٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ – and the torment overtook them from directions they did not perceive]: Meaning, from where they thought they were safe. [ثُمَّ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ يُخۡزِيهِمۡ   – Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace]: Meaning, disgraced with punishment. [1]

[قَدۡ مَڪَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ   – Those before them indeed plotted]: Meaning plotted against their Messengers, employed various types of tricks in order to reject that which the messengers brought and established gigantic safeguards [by way of arguments, views etc] on their plots. [فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنۡيَـٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدِ  – but Allah struck at the foundation of their building]– Meaning, an affair came to them from its basis and foundation [فَخَرَّ عَلَيۡہِمُ ٱلسَّقۡفُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ  –  and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them] -Meaning, so what they built became a punishment for them. [وَأَتَٮٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ – and the torment overtook them from directions they did not perceive]: Meaning, that is because they thought that such a building will benefit and protect them from punishment, but their punishment occurred from that which they built and established.

This is one the best of parables regarding how Allaah nullifies the plots of his enemies, for indeed they pondered and reflected on that which the Messengers brought when they belied them, made up principles and rules for it based on falsehood, referred back to them to reject that which the Messengers came with, employed tricks to bring discomfort to the Messengers and inflict harm on them and those who followed them, but their plot became a source of evil against them, so their plan became their destruction, because their plot was evil as Allaah said: [ وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ – But the evil plot encompasses only him who makes it]. [Soorah Faatir: Ayah: 43]

This is in this worldly life and the punishment in the afterlife would be more disgraceful, and due to this Allaah said: [ثُمَّ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ يُخۡزِيهِمۡ   – Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace them]. [2]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And warn (O Muhammad) mankind of the Day when the torment will come unto them; then the wrong-doers will say: “Our Lord! Respite us for a little while, we will answer Your Call and follow the Messengers!” (It will be said): “Had you not sworn aforetime that you would not leave (the world for the Hereafter). And you dwelt in the dwellings of men who wronged themselves, and it was clear to you how We had dealt with them. And We put forth (many) parables for you.” Indeed, they planned their plot, and their plot was with Allah, though their plot was a great (one, still) it would never be able to remove the mountains. [Surah Ibraaheem. Aayaat 44-46]

[وَقَدۡ مَكَرُواْ مَڪۡرَهُمۡ   – Indeed, they planned their plot, and their plot was with Allaah]: There are four statements of the scholars regarding the above: That it was Namrood when he debated with Ibraaheem about his Lord. That it was about Bakhtanasar. That it is about the nations of the past and their plotting which necessitates Shirk. That it is about those who plotted against the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] when they desired to kill him.

And regarding the statement: [وَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَڪۡرُهُمۡ  – and their plot was with Allah]– meaning: Their plot is recorded so that Allaah will recompense them.

[وَإِن كَانَ مَڪۡرُهُمۡ لِتَزُولَ مِنۡهُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ  – though their plot was a great (one, still) it would never be able to remove the mountains]. Az-Zujaaj said, “Even if they plot reached the severity where it could move a mountain, they will still not be able to bring the affair of Islaam to an end”. [3] Even if their plot were to reach a stage where it could move a mountain, Allaah will still aid the religion He has ordained. [4]

Al-Awfee [rahimahullaah] said reported from Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] who said, “Their plot cannot move mountains”. Ibn Jareer [rahimahullaah] said, “This deed they commit is against themselves, such as associating partners to Allaah and disbelief in Him cannot bring any harm to the mountains nor anything, rather it will haunt them”. [5] The Aayaat of Allaah, His divine laws and His manifest miracles at the hands of the Messengers are like mountains in robustness and firmness. So the intent is to belittle their plot and that it cannot remove the Aayaat and Messenger ships. [6]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And when We let mankind taste of mercy after some adversity has afflicted them, behold! They take to plotting against Our Ayat [proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.]! Say: “Allah is more Swift in planning!” Certainly, Our Messengers (angels) record all of that which you plot. [Soorah Yunus: Aayah 21]

[وَإِذَآ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلنَّاسَ رَحۡمَةً۬ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتۡہُمۡ  – And when We let mankind taste of mercy after some adversity has afflicted them] – such as health after illness, wealth after [a state of] poverty, safety after [a state of] fear, they forget the adversity that afflicted them and do not thank Allaah for the ease and mercy [they receive]; rather they continue in their transgression and plotting. And due to this reason Allaah [The Most High] said: [ۡ إِذَا لَهُم مَّكۡرٌ۬ فِىٓ ءَايَاتِنَا‌ – behold! They take to plotting against Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)]– Meaning: They hasten towards falsehood in order to falsify the truth by way of it.

[قُلِ ٱللَّهُ أَسۡرَعُ مَكۡرًا‌ۚ – Say: Allah is more Swift in planning]– Meaning: Evil plotting encompasses only those who make it. Their [evil] aims will be thrown back at them and they will not be safe from the consequences; rather the angels write down what they used to do and Allaah will call them to account, then Allaah will recompense them for it with a full recompense [i.e. as they deserve without any injustice, decrease or increase]. [Ref 7]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And grieve you not for them, nor be straitened (in distress) because of what they plot. And they (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) say: “When (will) this promise (be fulfilled), if you are truthful?” Say: “Perhaps that which you wish to hasten on, may be close behind you. [Surah An-Naml. Aayaat 70-72] – Meaning, O Muhammad! Do not be grieve regarding the affair of these beliers and their lack of belief, for indeed if you knew the evil that is within them and that they are not worthy of any good, then neither would you despair nor grieve, neither would your heart be straitened nor would your soul worry about their plotting, for indeed the outcomes of their plotting will return to them. [وَيَمۡكُرُونَ وَيَمۡكُرُ ٱللَّهُ‌ۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡمَـٰڪِرِينَ   – they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners]. [Ref 8]

The Liars Are Always Exposed

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The fact that a statement regarding something is lies and falsehood is sometimes known based on the statement in and of itself, its contradictions, perplexity and the manifestation of those clear indications which shows that it is lies. Lies might be manifested based on what it is in reality, manifested based on what is apparent and what is being concealed. It is sometimes known based on the situation of the utterer of the lie, for indeed the one who is known for lying, wickedness and deception, his statements do not show anything else except a state of conformity with his deeds. He does not utter a statement or perform an action similar to that of a pious and truthful person – the one innocent of every evil, deception, lie and wicked behaviour; rather the heart, intention, statements and deeds of the truthful one have the same image; and the heart, statements, deeds and intentions of the liar have the same image. [Ref 9]

The Imaam [rahimahullaah] stated that one should beware of kadhib [lying], for indeed it corrupts one’s ability to illustrate information based on what it should be in reality. It corrupts one’s ability to illustrate information and his ability to teach the people. The liar portrays what is non-existent as something present and what is present as something non-existent. He portrays truth as something false and falsehood as something true; he portrays good as evil and evil as good, so this corrupts his conception and knowledge, which then becomes a punishment upon him. Then he portrays what is not true to the one deceived by him – the one who is inclined towards him- so he corrupts his conception and knowledge. The soul of the liar turns away from the existing reality -inclined towards what is non-existent and gives preference to falsehood.

And when his conception and knowledge is corrupted, which is the basis of every wilful chosen deed, his deeds become corrupt and marked by lies, so those deeds would emanate from him just as lies emanate from the tongue- he neither benefits from his tongue nor his deeds. This is why lying is the basis [or foundation] of immorality, just as the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “Indeed lies lead to immorality [or wickedness] and indeed immorality [or wickedness] leads to the fire. [Bukhaari 2606/2607]

Firstly lies emerges from the heart and then on the tongue, so it corrupts it; then it transfers to the limbs and corrupts its actions, just as it corrupts the statements of the tongue. Therefore, lying prevails over his statements, deeds and state of affairs; corruption becomes deeply rooted in him and its disease leads to destruction if Allaah does not grant him cure him with the medication of truthfulness, which uproots its (i.e. lying) from its original source.

This is why the basis [or foundation] of all the deeds of the hearts is based on truthfulness; and the basis of their opposites – such as showing off, self-amazement, pride, being glad [with ungratefulness to Allaah’s Favours], conceitedness, boastfulness, insolence, weakness, laziness, cowardice,  disgrace and other than them- is lies. The origin of every righteous deed- whether carried out in private or public- is based on truthfulness. And the origin of every corrupt deed – whether carried out in private or public- is lies.

Allaah punishes the liar by preventing him from those affairs that will bring him well-being and benefit, and He rewards the truthful one by granting him the ability to attain the beneficial affairs related to the worldly life and afterlife. There is nothing similar to truthfulness with regards to the manner in which it bring about the affairs of wellbeing in this life and the next, and there is nothing similar to lying with regards to the manner in which it corrupts and harms one’s worldly affairs and the afterlife. [Allaah (The Most High) said]: [ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ – O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds) [9:119] [هَٰذَا يَوْمُ يَنْفَعُ الصَّادِقِينَ صِدْقُهُمْ ۚ- This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth. [5:119] [ فَإِذَا عَزَمَ الْأَمْرُ فَلَوْ صَدَقُوا اللَّهَ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ – And when the matter (preparation for Jihad) is resolved on, then if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them. [47:21]

And those who made excuses from the Bedouins came (to you, O Prophet) asking your permission to exempt them (from the battle), and those who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat at home (without asking the permission for it); a painful torment will seize those of them who disbelieve. [9:90] [Ref 10]

It used to be said that whoever perpetrates these three acts  will be haunted by them:

[A] Rebellion against Allaah’s commandments.  Allaah [The Most High] said:

[ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا بَغْيُكُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِكُمْ – O mankind! Your rebellion (disobedience to Allah) is only against your ownselves]. [Soorah Yoonus: Ayah: 23]

[B] Evil plotting.  Allaah [The Most High] said:

[ وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ – But the evil plot encompasses only him who makes it]. [Soorah Faatir: Ayah: 43]

[C] Breaking pledges. [Allaah [The Most High] said:

[فَمَنْ نَكَثَ فَإِنَّمَا يَنْكُثُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ – Then whosoever breaks his pledge only breaks it to his own harm]. [Soorah Al-Fath: Ayah: 10] [11]

Analysing The Plots of The Disbelievers – A Fard Kifaayah

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee (may Allaah preserve him) says:

So it is not permissible for the Ulamaa to remain heedless of their plans (i.e. the enemies of Islaam), their actions, their publications, their missionary activities and their various calls (to the Muslims). And also the various poisons they are infusing – which are in opposition to the Qur’aan and the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) and his Sunnah. And nor of what plans they have for (the destruction of) the beliefs and methodologies of Islaam. It is not permissible either, to remain heedless of their concentrated efforts to Christianize or secularize the Muslim youth. And along with that, the Muslim youth and the students are not able to oppose this plan and strategy. Rather it is necessary that the distinguished Ulamaa – those who are experienced and shrewd – it is for such people, in all the places to undertake this duty. So it is obligatory for some of the intelligent and ingenious people from the field of Aqeedah to be mobilised for opposing these plans. And likewise it is a must that the intelligent and distinguished from amongst the specialists in the Sunnah – that they be mobilised for the refutation of these and similarly the eminent and distinguished from amongst those in the fields of Orientalism for the refutation of the plans of the Orientalists.” (Ahl ul-Hadeeth, p.102)

He also says: “I myself believe that it is a benefit – rather it is of necessity – that we know what the enemies are planning for us, and that it is necessary for us to prepare (ourselves in strength) to destroy their plans. However, I do not exaggerate in this matter, rather my view is the view of our Ulamaa and they have all agreed upon this – that amongst the obligatory matters there are some that are Fard Ain and others that are Fard Kifaayah – and even if knowing the state of the enemies is harmful – it is still necessary for us to know it – but it is treated as Fard Kifaayah. When some attend to it, then the harm is removed from the rest” up until he said: “So I consider that there is no criticism for the Ulamaa and the students of knowledge who take great concern for preserving the Sharee’ah of Allaah – in terms of the Book, the Sunnah and its understanding – for this is one of the duties of the Kifaayah actions. And I believe that these people are more superior, noble, truthful and of more benefit to Islaam than those who are weak in their knowledge of the religion of Allaah or those who have no share in acquainting themselves with it.”  [An excerpt from an article at www.salafipublications.com titled: The Salafis and Looking into the Affairs of the Ummah]

Hearts Deprived of Fear of The Hereafter: [A Disease That Has Destroyed Hearts of The Power-hungry – Those Who Seek to Control Every Aspect of Life Without Guidance From Their Creator]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Hearts Deprived of Fear of The Hereafter – A Disease That Has Destroyed Hearts of The Power-hungry – Those Who Seek to Control Every Aspect of Life Without Guidance From Allaah:

Al-Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] said, “Your love of the worldly life is neither that you are seeking that which will look after your affairs nor is your abstinence from the worldly things means that you have abandoned your needs because you have been prevented from it, rather part of loving the worldly life is that fear of the afterlife has left your heart”. [Ref 1]

One of The Clear Distinctions Between The Pious Souls And Those Whose Hearts Are Captivated By The Worldly Life – Salaficentre.com

Imaam as-Saa’di [rahimahullaah] said:

Ponder upon the stories of some of the distinguished people of [piety] and the good life they lived! Whether they were either rich or poor, [facing] hardship or [in a state of] ease, you still found them to be the most well behaved amongst the people- the most relaxed at heart and the most delighted; rather you will find one amongst them in a state of insignificance and poverty, whilst he is pleased, contented, neither displeased with Allaah nor the creation. This is a blessing from Allaah which He bestows on whomsoever He pleases, and He is the Possessor of all blessings.

As for those enslaved by the worldly life-those who have submitted to its glitter- they do not care how they gather wealth, whether through permissible or impermissible means. They are not bothered about [uttering] false and evil speech against the righteous slaves of Allaah, [whilst being] heedless – seeking to raise themselves, disseminating their falsehood and rumours for the sake of their merchandises and to fulfil their lowly desires. However, your Lord knows about them, and He is Ever Watchful over them. [Ref 2]

The Worldly Life is For Four Types of People: [A Thankful Wealthy Person, a Patience Poor Person, a Boastful Wealthy Person And a Boastful Poor Person! – Salaficentre.com

Narrated Abu Kabshah Al-An’maariy (radiyallaahu-anhu) that Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: “I swear by Allah regarding three (affairs) which I am going to tell, so remember them. The wealth of a man does not decrease due to (giving) charity; a slave does not exercise patience when oppressed, except that Allah increases his honour; a slave does not open the door of begging, except that Allaah opens for him the door of poverty (or he stated a statement similar to it).” I am going to tell you (something), so remember it: The worldly life is for four types of people. A slave whom Allaah has given wealth and knowledge, so he fears his Lord by way of it. He preserves the ties of kinship and acknowledges Allaah’s Rights regarding it. This (type of person) is on the most virtuous position. A slave whom Allaah has given knowledge but not wealth. He is truthful in his intention and says: `If I had wealth, I would have done the deed of such and such (person).’’ So because of this intention of his, his reward is the same (i.e. the righteous one who has been given wealth and knowledge). A slave whom Allaah has given wealth but not knowledge. He wastes his wealth out of ignorance. He neither fears Allaah nor does he keep the ties of kinship, nor does he acknowledge Allaah’s rights. This (type of person) is at the evilest position. A slave whom Allaah has neither given wealth nor knowledge and he says: `If I had wealth, I would have done the deed of such and such (person).’’ So by way of his intention, they are similar (i.e. similar to the evil person who wastes his wealth). [3]

Shaikh Ubaid (may Allaah preserve him) stated: The first is a wealthy person who is thankful (to Allaah); so Allaah will raise him to the most virtuous position due to his deed. The second is a poor person who exercises patience. He is truthful in his intention with regards to spending from that which Allaah has bestowed on him. So Allaah makes him reach the most virtuous position due to his truthful intention. The third is a boastful wealthy person. He is covetous and stingy; so his deed takes him to the most evil position. The fourth is a boastful poor person and his intention is evil. So together with his poverty, his intention takes him to the most evil position. So based on this, we know that by way of truthful intentions Allaah raises the person. And an evil intention debases a person until he finds him/herself in the most evil position. [4]

The Example of This World And Myself Is That of a Rider Who Seeks Shade Under a Tree, Then He Moves On And Leaves It Behind

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

A desire for the afterlife cannot be achieved except by way of Zuhd Fid-Dunyaah [i.e. abstaining from everything that will divert a person from obedience to Allaah], and Zuhd Fid-Dunyaah cannot be accomplished except by way of contemplation in two ways:

The First Contemplation: Contemplation on the worldly life – its quick passage, disappearance, deficiency and low value, its hassles, ordeals, frustrations and troubles, and the end result is that it will finally come to an end- together with loss and regret. Therefore, its seeker [i.e. the one who seeks after it in a blameworthy manner] is neither safeguarded from grief before and after attaining it, nor after it vanishes. This is the first contemplation.

The Second Contemplation: Contemplation on the Afterlife – its closeness [i.e. not very far away], its definite arrival and occurrence, permanent [existence after it takes place], the nobility of the good and happiness it contains, and the difference between it and this worldly life, just as Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said: [وَٱلۡأَخِرَةُ خَيۡرٌ۬ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ  – Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting] [Soorah Al-A’laa Ayah 17]. It is a perfect and abiding [enjoyment, happiness etc], but the [worldly pleasures etc] are deficient and will come to an end.

If a person accomplishes these two contemplations, he’ll prefer that which [sound] intellect would give precedence and refrain from that which one should refrain from [i.e. everything in this worldly life that diverts a person from obedience to Allaah and leads to what is forbidden]. Everyone is naturally disposed [to the fact that he or she] does not abandon an immediate benefit and a reachable pleasure, whilst [waiting] for a delayed benefit and an absent pleasure whose [arrival is certainly] expected, except when one’s desire for what is loftier and more virtuous is stronger and the virtue of what is awaited over what is immediately present is manifest.

However, if a person prefers what is deficient and will [eventually] cease to exist [i.e. this worldly life], then that is either because the virtue of [the afterlife] is not manifested to him or due to a lack of desiring what is more virtuous. Both these two states are an indication of weakness in Eemaan, intellect and clear-sightedness, for indeed the one who desires the Dunyaah- the one who gives it precedence and is eager for it, either he testifies [to the fact that] there is that which is more virtuous and everlasting, or he does not testify. If he does not testify [i.e. that the Aakhirah is more virtuous and everlasting], he is completely devoid of Eemaan; however if he testifies to that [i.e. that the Aakhirah is more virtuous and everlasting] but does not give it precedence, then his intellect is corrupt and he has made an evil choice for himself. These two [testimonies] are inevitable and a servant cannot escape them, because giving precedence to the Dunyaah over the Aakhirah is either due to corruption in Eemaan or due to corruption of one’s intellect, and in many cases both of them are combined together [in a person].

And because of this the Messenger of Allaah [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and his companions turned away from the Dunyaah [i.e. they only took what sufficed their needs and did not fall into any blameworthy deed due to it] and turned their hearts away from it. The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “What is the world to me? What am I to the world? Verily, the example of this world and myself is that of a rider who seeks shade under a tree, then he moves on and leaves it behind”. [Reported by Imaam Ahmad 3701 and others]

The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “What is the example of this worldly life in comparison to the Hereafter other than one of you dipping his finger in the sea? Let him see what he brings forth.” [Reported by Imaam Muslim 2858]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Verily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who reflect. Allah calls to the home of peace (i.e. Paradise, by accepting Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds and abstaining from polytheism and evil deeds) and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path. [Soorah Yoonus Aayaat 24-25]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds (five compulsory prayers, deeds of Allah’s obedience, good and nice talk, remembrance of Allah with glorification, praises and thanks, etc.), that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope. [Soorah Al-Kahf’ Aayaat 45-46]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment. [Soorah Al-Hadeed’ Aayah 57]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad) you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter. [Soorah At-Tawbah’ Aayah 38]

And the [following Aayaat] are enough [to show the inferiority and shortness of] the worldly life. Allaah [The Most High] said:

Tell Me, if We do let them enjoy for years; And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised! All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them. [Soorah Ash-Shu’araa’ Aayaat 205-207]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَيَوۡمَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا سَاعَةً۬ مِّنَ ٱلنَّہَارِ يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيۡنَہُمۡ‌ۚ – And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc.) but an hour of a day. (O mankind! This Qur’an is sufficient as) a clear Message (or proclamation to save yourself from destruction). But shall any be destroyed except the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah)]. [Soorah Al-Ahqaaf’ Aayah 35]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

They ask you (O Muhammad) about the Hour, – when will be its appointed time? You have no knowledge to say anything about it; To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof? You (O Muhammad) are only a warner for those who fear it; The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning. [Soorah An-Naazi’aat’ Aayaat 42-46]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَيَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يُقۡسِمُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُواْ غَيۡرَ سَاعَةٍ۬‌ۚ – And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) will swear that they stayed not but an hour. [Soorah Ar-Rum’ Aayah 55]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

قَـٰلَ كَمۡ لَبِثۡتُمۡ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ

قَـٰلَ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا قَلِيلاً۬‌ۖ لَّوۡ أَنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ

He (Allah) will say: “What number of years did you stay on earth?” They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account.” He (Allah) will say: “You stayed not but a little, if you had only known! [Soorah Al-Mu’minoon’ Aayaat 112-114]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

The Day when the Trumpet will be blown (the second blowing): that Day, We shall gather the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, etc.) Zurqa: (blue or blind eyed with black faces); In whispers will they speak to each other (saying): “You stayed not longer than ten (days).” We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: “You stayed no longer than a day!” [Soorah Taha’ Aayah 102-104]

And Allaah’s Aid is sought and upon Him we place our reliance! [Ref 5]

Those Who Turn Away From The Wise Reminder And Their Knowledge Is Limited to The Short Lived Pleasures, Desires And Goals of This Worldly Life

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Therefore withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who turns away from Our Reminder (this Qur’an) and desires nothing but the life of this world. That is what they could reach of knowledge. Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance.

[Surah An-Najm. Aayaat 29-30]

When it is the case that this is the abiding behaviour of these polytheists – that they do not have any aim to follow the truth, rather their only aim and intent is that which their souls desire, so Allaah [The Exalted] commanded His Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] to turn away from the one who has turned away from Allaah’s Reminder, which is the Wise Reminder, the Great Qur’aan and the Noble News, but they turn away from the beneficial subject matters and they do not want except the worldly life, and this is the beginning and end of their desire. It is well known that the servant does not act except for something he wants, so their deeds are is limited to the Dunyaa, its pleasures and desires. This is where their knowledge stops and its purpose. As for those who believe in the Hereafter- those testify to the truthfulness of it, the people of sound understanding and sound intellect, their utmost concern and desire is the home of the afterlife> Their sciences are the most virtuous and the loftiest, and that is knowledge taken from the Qur’aan and the [authentic] of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]. And Allaah knows who deserves guidance and guides him; and the one who is not deserving of it, then he is left to himself and forsaken, so he deviates from the path of Allaah. And due this due Allaah said:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ

Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance – Meaning, Allaah [The Exalted] places blessings exactly where it should be. [Ref 6]

Allaah (The Most High) informed us that the believer amongst the people of Pharaoh said:

يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَتَـٰعٌ۬ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡأَخِرَةَ هِىَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ

“O my people! Truly, this life of the world is nothing but a (quick passing) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever.” [7]

Mujaahid (rahimahullaah) narrated: Abdullaah Ibn Umar (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said: Allaah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) took hold of my shoulder and said: ‘’Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller.’’  The subnarrator added: Ibn Umar Used to say: ‘’If you survive till the evening, do not expect ti be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death.’’ [8]

The Muslim is like a stranger in this worldly life: The stranger is one residing in a country other than his country.  The worldly life is not the Muslim’s permanent place of residence; rather the Muslim’s permanent place of residence is paradise.  He is in this worldly life to work for entry into Paradise. He takes what is needed from this world to aid him work for entry into paradise.

The Muslim is like a traveller in this worldly life: The traveller takes rest during his journey and then carries on travelling. He does not reside permanently in that place he stopped to take a rest.  In the life of this world the Muslim is that traveller.  In reality he is not a permanent resident in the worldly life because his time in it is very little.  His nights and days take him towards the afterlife.

What is befitting the Muslim with regards to the days, nights, and his health etc! If you reach the morning do not delay good deeds till in the evening because it maybe that you will not reach the evening.  If you reach the evening do not delay good deeds till the morning because it maybe that you will not reach the morning.  Do not delay repentance and righteous deeds till another time.

As long as a person is in a state of good health and wellbeing, he is able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc; but when he becomes sick he is not able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc.  Therefore, as long as Allaah has given you good health, then hasten towards righteous actions because a time will come in which you will be unable to perform them-either due to illness, old age, or senility. Prepare for death and what is to come after it. Allaah gave you this life in order that you busy yourself with what will benefit you in the afterlife. So do not spend your life in play and jest.  [9]

Imaam As-Sadi [rahimahullaah] said:

The sensible person is in a position to have the Baaqiyaat As-Saalihaat as provision [i.e. the good righteous deeds that last and are better in the sight of Allah for reward and better in respect of hope in the Hereafter] together with his share in the worldly life with ease- by seeking aid in going out in the morning and midday and something of the night time. This is the foundation upon which he places his worldly affairs and the means to [accomplishing them]. And even when such [affairs] come to him late at night, he would pray and seek aid from his Lord and asks for that which brings about goodness in his religious and Worldly affairs.

He begins his day with good – recitation of the Qur’aan and acts of worship- to which one devotes himself in the morning; performs the five daily prayers in their earliest times and that which Allah makes easy for him to perform of good deeds, such as [optional] prayer, recitation of the Qur’aan, remembrance of Allah, seeking knowledge and other than that. He engages his tongue in the Remembrance of Allah and in seeking forgiveness.

He pursues the means by way of which one seeks his livelihood such as trade, production of goods, farming and what is similar to them, whilst seeking the aid of his Lord in that. He suffices himself with the permissible means and turns away from that which Allaah has made unlawful. The intent behind this is to fulfil the individual obligations; to be (upon) self-sufficiency and having little or no need of the creation. If he does this or something closer to it, the result will be goodness and he will gain abundant reward [for the afterlife]. Also he does not forget his [lawful] share in the worldly life and it may be that Allah will bless him with contentment, which is true richness by way of which a good life is attained. [Ref 10]

The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said,

“What is the world to me?

Allaah [The Most High] said: [كَأَنَّہُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا سَاعَةً۬ مِّن نَّہَارِۭ‌ۚ بَلَـٰغٌ۬‌ۚ فَهَلۡ يُهۡلَكُ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ – On the Day when they will see that (torment) with which they are promised (i.e. threatened, it will be) as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day.

[Ref 11]

They Forget Their Reality

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

Allaah brought the servant out of his mother’s womb whilst he knew nothing, not able to do anything and owned nothing; neither able to give nor take; neither able to harm nor benefit. This state of neediness until he reached a more perfect state is something witnessed and tangible for everyone [to see], and it is well known that this is the very essence of the human being and he remains upon that state.
