What Is Zuhd (Abstinence From The Worldly Life) – Abu Sulayman

Abu Sulaymaan [rahimahullaah] said:

“Abstinence from the worldly life is to abandon that which preoccupies you away from [the remembrance and obedience to] Allaah.” He (rahimahullaah) also said: “Everything that preoccupies you away from [remembrance and obedience to] Allaah- be it [your] family, wealth and children- then indeed it is misfortune.”

Reality of the Worldly Life and The Cause of Animosity Between The People’ By Imaam An-Nawawi (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Nawawi (rahimahullaah) said:

Know that the one (residing) in the worldly life is a guest and what he (possesses) in his hands is a loan-a guest is a traveller and a loan is to be repaid.  The worldly life is something whose presence is visible and both the pious and evil sinner eat from it. It (i.e. blameworthy competition for the worldly things) is hateful to the friends of Allaah and beloved to the people of dunyah (i.e. those engage in blameworthy competition for it); so whoever competes them in that which is beloved to them, they will become angry with him…… up until the Imaam said: The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) directed a person to abstain from what the people possess if he wants the people to love him and that he abandons (blameworthy) love of the worldly life because there is nothing in the hands of the people that makes them hate one another and engage in (blameworthy) competition, except the worldly (things)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

A man said to Abdullaah Bin Mas-ood (may Allah be pleased with him): “I do not want to be amongst the companions of the right, I want to be amongst those foremost in faith.’’

So Abdullaah Bin Mas-ood said to him: ‘’But there is a man right here (meaning himself) who wishes that he is not resurrected after he dies.”

One day he (Abdullaah) came out and the people followed him, so he said to them ”Do you have a need?”

They said: ‘’No, but we want to walk along with you.”

He said: ”Go back, for indeed it is humiliation for the one following and a trial for the one followed.”

He said: ”Had you known what I know about myself, you would have hurried to cover my head with earth.”
